View Full Version : Mage Gauntlet - (by Rocketcat Games)
Kepa I bought Mage gauntlet off iTunes store on my PC & sync to my iPhone. But I didn't receive any free IAP at all..
How to get the early buyer bonus? I've played with no hats unlocked and not even a pet.
The way I purchase is the same as Cybertox.

I've always not so fond of hack & slash & grinding RPG like zenonia
but I will give Mage Gauntlet a chance for it to shine!

A tip for all you who didn't get your hats..
Scroll down in inventory screen because hats doesn't appear in first rows but in the middle of inventory.. Maybe this is it.. I was also confused at first..
Great game.. Really like funny writting!

And universal is planned for first update.
Please include iCloud save state sync so you can pick up and resume on every iOS device. That'd be a killer feature!

I've only played a few levels, but thus far... I love everything about it.
The art, music, and classic action RPG gameplay with a slight twist - It's all great.
How do you not love a game that has screens like this:

Thanks for the responses Kepa (not just to my questions, but to everyone's). It's been universally stated that an active dev on these forums makes a WORLD of difference in terms of overall experience with a game. You're really making a difference by showing that you're listening to what we all have to say! Thank you!

Played for one hour already. So far, loving it very much. The controls are spot-on, the graphics are beautifully retro. Have been randomly cutting the grasses and destroying barrels in hope for some random items. :D
Definitely one of the best RPGs I've played in a while.

I just beat the first boss... SHEESH! I loved it from the second I started to control the main character. The absence of a D-Pad / Joystick for movement is PERFECTLY handled by an invisible area for movement.
I wish I got a little something out of all the effort I put into slashing bushes, fruit and barrels though... :) Combat is fantastic and I absolutely LOVE the sprite-work. The magic effects are right on point and I hope the devs have updates planned for the future (how great would an online deathmatch mode be? Think NOX - the old PC game!)
This really raises the bar for the Zenonias and Inotias out there in every possible way, and unfortunately has ended up spoiling me.

Does anyone care if we remove OpenFeint temporarily? And by temporarily I mean like first update, maaaybe even longer. It's acting up in some annoying ways and removing it would let people download it over cellular. If Open Feint shut down their servers and never showed up on another game of mine I'd call that a good thing, so go right ahead and remove it for as long as you want.

+1 billion to this - for a long time now I have been Player39384478292200 or whatever number they assigned me, won't let me sign back in to the other other account since it is a new device, so I ALWAYS hit "no thanks" if I see the option - with more and more devices and having Game Center standard now I think this would be a wise choice.

In agreement with other posters that this is the best RPG I've played in a while and definately better than the Zeonia or Inotia series.
Love the gameplay, but do wish there was a hot button for the spells (assign the spell beforehand, of course). Takes you out of the moment a bit to have to open the spelll menu.

I think so far that this may be the best Rocketcat Game so far. I like the setting, the story, the characters and the whole feel of the game.
One little thing stood out however and that was the music loop right at the beginning of the game, the tutorial area. The music just suddenly stops and then starts again and that always took me out of the experience. Itīs a minor thing, but it really was a little bit annoying.

I read the review, and I'm still undecided about buying the game. I already have WAY too many apps (especially unfinished RPGs) so I'm kind of on the fence about this one.
I'm not a huge fan of RPGs, but I do like them. The only RPG with a story that I've actually completed is Zenonia 3. I own Zenonia 2, Inotia 2, Exitium, Queen's Crown, etc. They never really held my interest as well as Zenonia 3.
Do you think this game would hold my interest 'til the end? Anyone finished with the game yet? :)

Haven't finished the game yet, but I don't know if I'd go into it expecting some huge, epic story. Go in expecting FUN. Yes, it's got a story, but did any of the games you mention not have your typical, overused RPG story?
This game holds my interest simply because it's the most fun I've had in an action-RPG in a long time. I also love it's nugget-sized levels that make it easy for someone who can't play a game for hours on end to get right back into it. Even the description notes that it's fast-paced and you don't have to bother with "fetch this, get that" missions.
Aurum Blade was fulfilling my need as another RPG that avoided the tedium of endless NPCs, etc. But this has taken over the top spot over AB (not that I won't find time for that as well).
To me, this is the perfect RPG for the iOS.
In agreement with other posters that this is the best RPG I've played in a while and definately better than the Zeonia or Inotia series.

Varies a lot. Last time I did it, it took 4 hours (though I also got most of the secrets yet knew where everything was). So really, I'm not sure until more people say how long it took them, then I'll take an average or something.

Well, I do have to say I enjoy the randomness of the spells. Definately adds more replayability to the game. There are probably ways to assign the spells to slots on the screen, but it might get kinda cluttered.
Far from being a game-breaker. For being your first RPG, it's very well thought out and incredibly enjoyable.

Enjoying the game so far.
Is it a waste of time to smash barrels and cut vegetation? I never find anything.
How do I instantly restore health? Or is it a rare and random pick up?
Games like this are proof that game-play is more important than graphics.
The only criticism I have is that the game-play feels very linear and somewhat pointless. I don't feel like I'm actually doing something that has any impact on a story or just about anything else other than just 'get to the end of the map'. I prefer little mini quests that tell me to do something useful and offer good saving checkpoints. I can only play a game like this in short bursts because I feel I could be doing something more meaningful in life; whether it be real world activities or playing games like Aralon (no intention on comparing graphics) where it has fulfilling short term objectives.
I believe the game-play is superb, however it is only the content (lack of mini quests, different characters, or interesting story) that is missing.

I'm not that far into the game, but I think it's perfect for people like you. It's streamlined without completely losing depth. It's not grindy (which is something that puts me off in KRPG's) and the story is fun, unlike KRPG's.
I would say that if Zenonia 3 held your interest (it sure didn't hold mine), chances are this will too. It doesn't have a shitty framerate (it runs at 60 fps) and the controls are much better than any other KRPG and it's shitty controls (lots of shitty things in KRPG's). The game is just much more fun to play because of all that.
Also, customization is more rewarding because it actually change the way the character looks. I always loved this detail some RPG's have.

Yeah the barrels thing is just a practical joke, except for an achievement you get for smashing a certain number of each object category.
Health's a rare but not random pick up. There's also an early sword you can get that will restore your health slightly a few times per level, randomly.
Next game will be able to focus on more content, though we're not going to add KILL 20 BOARS or COLLECT 10 FIREWOOD quests to any game, ever. Unless it was some sort of bizarre parody, like a game where EVERY QUEST was to collect 10 firewood. Some Zelda style FIND ITEM/ABILITY THAT LETS YOU UNLOCK OTHER AREAS would be really cool in a sequel, though. We'd also like to explore more open level maps and more open world map exploration. Couldn't do it this game, is all.

You guys clearly have the talent to pull it off, so I'm already anticipating your next title.
Shame about the Metroidvania style not being too hot for you though. It's my favorite game structure and I would love to see a game like that on iOS made by a talented developer.
I hope you eventually reconsider it though, after all it's hard to gauge the sales potential of this kind of game when there's barely any quality title at all on the store (can you even name one? I honestly don't remember). Also, it's not like people are put off by the Metroidvania style. I think that if you have appealing visuals and the quality to get the word mouth to mouth, the sales will come. After all let's face it, the average consumer buys based on visuals and ratings. Well, and the name of the studio, and yours is recognizable. There's also the advantage of playing into a barely explored niche. There's a nice piece of pie to be gained there I'm sure.

That is what I am thinking.
Or consequential quests, such as you did this therefore this or that will happen (even as simple as getting more favorable more quests in one direction or another) -- or the attitudes of NPCs change; ex: help the farmer kill the wolves that are taking his chickens and you can hunt down livestock, in other farms as well (word spreads) without getting punished or chased off. Good versus evil is always an option to -- kill a bunch of civilization in a town and they may hate you or attack you but the bad guys may be offering you quests for their own purposes. These are just examples of course. One thing in most RPGs that I always get annoyed with is that good always gets a better deal than evil - better quests, better treatment, pick ups, etc. Would like to see an RPG where evil gets a decent fair share of the game's content, doesn't hurt your primary goals, yet alters the gameplay a bit -- you might scare off townsfolk but you'll find the hoodlum areas are friendly -- perhaps even turn it around where there are multiple bosses in each final map battle, and depending on how good or evil you are (shown in a scale) you might be fighting the bad or good one alongside the other boss.
Just some random thoughts there.
Still going to play and finish the game. I am waiting for you first update to continue so I can play my own music.
I recommend everyone everyone buy the game, no matter what the rant or rave just to support such an involved developer. :D

There's been a few decently covered Metroidvanias on the app store, but all three involved a character that moved by flying/swimming. They also did terribly. I'm not sure how Robot Wants Kitty did, which is kind of a mini-Metroidvania.
Also the damn vertical screen size. If we made a Metroidvania of the sort we want to (with a grappling hook) we'd probably have to make it iPad only, just for the better vertical screen ratio (4:3 instead of 3:2).
Maybe in the far, far future, if we could make a simultaneous PC version. I'm wondering how Lost Mars will do, a Metroidvania by the Spider guys. Probably fairly well.

Second, how is everyone handling their stats? And is there a maximum value for each stat?
The max level is 75 and the max for each stat is 25, so if you play long enough, eventually you'll get all of them. It's just a matter of how you want to be specced on the way there.
Lovng the game even Asian my iPad, but .... I took all iap and I equipped, but when I start a new game I see that my fire sword and vest are removed and I am stuck with the basic robe and the staff.

Getting new equipment is part of the story of the very first level, so your equipment always defaults to those, even if you go back and replay it. You can use the inferno set for any other level though.
Edit: Never mind, Kepa explained that it was a mistake.

For the map screen on the iPad, you could try a simple decorative frame.
Whatever you decide to try for your next a-rpg, juste remember, please, no grinding, no fetch quests and no obscure riddles that require the player to put a piece of cloth under a UV light to decipher some obscure elvish dialect. :)
About Metroidvania's: Glowfish probably didn't do too bad, and it's a sort of proto of the genre. Aquaria's coming soon too.
Personally, I prefer tightly designed, purposeful levels to huge spaghetti mazes. Super Metroid and PSX Castlevania were fun in their time, but I've had enough of it.

KRPGS SUCK, it's just that before they were the only game in town if you wanted that top-down pixelly style.
I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that. I've tried oh so hard to play all the different KRPGs on the App Store but I've always detested them. They're all so samey. Generic story, bad translation and tons of grinding. This game, on the other hand, is perfect. Love it. Keep up the good work.

Honestly, I see them as really subpar versions of their J counterparts.
In response to your Twitter poll:
The third level in the Forest is harder, yes, but what really surprised me was the length of the level. I swear it's like three times longer than any of the previous ones. There was some part where I had to backtrack to clear an area I missed, and it took forever to return all the way back, and then to go forward again to the end of the level.

I see it as a "proto-metroidvania". It's level-based, yes, but the levels are laid-out in a maze-like fashion. Not much of an rpg edge, I admit, except for the power-up companion you can choose. There's a free version to try.

Thanks a lot! So, is the game any good? Do you like it? I'll definitely give it a shot once my iPad 2 arrives.
Anymore gem recommendations like that?

Kepa,
Can I request that you add a no helmet display option if at all possible. I am not sure if helmets give any stats yet as I'm still on the first map but if I could turn them off while still being any to benefit from any potential stats that would be appreciated.

Hats don't give stats, so the "no helm" option is just wearing no hat.

Hats are purely cosmetic, and if you don't want a hat there is the option (pretty sure its the first square).

Yeah I knew the third forest level was a bit too long compared to other levels, but I didn't consider how out of place it would be considering how well the orc enemies work together.
I don't really want to shorten the level at this point, I'm considering just adding an assload of spells to the level...
Um, just a quick question, when you die and it gives you the options to go to the map, restart the level or revive, how many revives do you get and how often do you get mmore throughout the game (if at all)?

I believe it's 3 per sublevel. If you go back to the map, you'll have 3 again for the next level you play. Let's say you play 2-1 and then you revive once. When you get to 2-2, I believe you start again with 3 lives (someone correct me if I'm mistaken).

How does the save system work? Does it auto-save, can you manually save at any time, does it just automatically save between levels, etc.?

Auto-saves. Jam the home screen button at any time, get a phone call, whatever.
Yeah we should probably fiddle with the continue screen so it's a little less confusing. Will add that to the list.

So, I bought this as soon as I could last night, and have played up to the slime levels. I've loved the Hook Games, and while I am not a very big fan of 90s action-RPGs, I figured I would give Rocketcat the benefit of the doubt on this one. As of now, I have mixed feelings about the game.
Combat is really cool - even though I am not very far, I am impressed by how much versatility is offered just by dashing and sword-dashing. Dashing through an opponent's magic to hit them up-close is really satisfying, and using your sword dash on groups or single large enemies offers some decisions to be made at a quick pace. There have been some pretty cool 'arenas' where shooting enemies and melee enemies are interestingly placed.
Unfortunately, while the combat can be cool at times, it is usually just mashing on a trickle of enemies. I would prefer to have bigger, 'staged' fights separated by some walking rather than a boar here and there. Also, while the combat buttons and spells work very well, I am not entirely sold on the control schemes. Any chance we could get a fixed analog stick?
Finding secret areas is usually more irritating than anything else. Too often, secret area hunting means dragging your face along every wall in the level until you find the 'fake' ones. Sometimes, there are hints such as lamp-light or dirt which are effective, but the wall-drag, one of my least favorite video game mechanics ever, is usually the only real way to find secrets. Already, I have come to the end of a few levels, realized I missed one or two baddies, and backtracked along every flippin' wall to see what I missed. Maybe some people like this for nostalgia's sake, but I cannot stand it.
Although I don't need pages and pages of stats, it would be nice if the game elaborated a bit more on what items do what and what your current stats are, as well as what they mean. While I appreciate the simplified intentions, the stats are hidden from the player a bit too well.
Boss fights are just awesome. These have, so far, easily been the best parts of the game. Spell-heavy, short and sweet, and needing some strategy, every one has been exciting so far, and looking forward to the next ones is keeping me in the game. I would love a timed boss-attack mode with leaderboards. Maybe if we are good for Christmas, Kepa?
Lastly, I'm a touch disappointed with the writing in the game. I wasn't sure if they would have a somewhat serious story, or if it would be short and witty banter while hinting at some deeper lore (I would love to find out more about Super QuickHook's mountain). So far, it seems like neither is the case. The characters have been a bit forgettable so far, and every conversation just seems to end with the main character rolling her eyes. I hope this picks up a bit.
I am enjoying the game so far, but I do find it to be a bit of a struggle at points, particularly some of the longer levels. I am really looking forward to when the difficulty ramps up, which I think will provide some excellent combat situations.
Here, I would give it 4/5. Of course, I already gave it a 5 on the app store after playing a single level, which this game totally deserves when compared to what's out there. Thanks for keeping up with the games, guys!

I'll keep it short and sweet. The game is great. Perfectly captures the spirit of SNES while succeding brilliantly in its own terms. As someone who was never a big fan of the "hook" games, I am very happy that the devs decided to try this new direction.
Now back to the game!

The game is amazing so far; I really enjoy the unique magic combat system. :3
Only minor problem I've been having is with Game Center achievements. I usually play the game with wifi off to save battery, and later I turn on wifi while playing to sync my achievements. However, none of my achivements are being synced to my GC account :(
I don't blame you guys though, I've noticed that game center doesn't work for a lot of my apps. Open feint achievements work fine for me.
Besides that, excellent work on the game!

Is there a way to see how much of a level you have cleared to get the 3 stars? There is one level I swear I have combed every inch, killed every monster and even found hidden rooms but still can only get 2 stars for it.
Oh and I never got that pop up that Kepa was saying explained the star system - where did I miss that?
I would love a timed boss-attack mode with leaderboards. Maybe if we are good for Christmas, Kepa?
YES!
Alsooooo.... The Achievement Descriptions on Game Center seem to be cut off.

I will do this in the sequel, but as an elaborate joke where you have to crush 10000 barrels for a really ugly looking hat.

Fixed analog stick? Like Minigore? We have the non-fixed stick option in settings, and a D-pad in there too...
Remember the complaint about trickles of enemies and get back to me once you're done with the game. Then you can tell me if that perception changed or not.
A boss rush might happen, though I need to test it and see if it works very well in practice. We're definitely doing a couple of monster-arena modes, though.
Yeah I thought we maybe should have made the secrets more obvious, probably smaller in number (so they'd be more special), etc. Still, they didn't turn out as bad as I thought given the constraints of the screen.
Yeah, we didn't add any sort of stat signifier until pretty late in development. So they're really only shown on the level-up screen, and even then it doesn't track equipment stats. Although, the equipment descriptions do a pretty honest job of saying what they do. The only thing missing is exact percentages. It's funny, the descriptions used to be a lot more specific (down to %'s), but I was convinced to make them more vague.

That would reward grinding behavior, which is a kind of gameplay I personally find repelling, unpleasant and quite boring.
It's one of the positive aspect that differentiates Mage Gauntlet from the common krpg to me -- a lack of repetitive and un-gratifying tasks.

I have to agree with the complaints about secret areas. It's my biggest beef with the game so far.
On one hand grinding is removed, on the other hand you have to keep rubbing your face on the wall to find secret areas that really don't reward you all that well. Honestly, it's not that different. Doing chores to get stuff.
It would be better if the number of secret areas were smaller, with more meaningfull rewards. Frankly, I gave up on finding every secret area and I'm enjoying the game more that way.
I like how the combat is really ramping up though. Had some pretty cool fights.

Yeah that was probably a mistake. I think some secrets work fine (the ones with subtle or not subtle indicators that they exist, the ones with special art or items, or hell the ones with things to read), but I don't like how others turned out (the monster closets and ones with just an urn in there).

I'm actually happy someone has brought this up. MG is initially and intentionally painfully cliche, but perceptive players should be coming across some possible hints of what's really going on.
All I can say is keep an eye out for secret passages and read the hidden books. Mage Gauntlet is indeed within the same world and timeframe as the previous Hook games. If you find everything and beat Master Mode, you'll know for sure that they're intertwined.
There IS a history with Super Quickhook's setting; one that was unfortunately cut short from the game itself last year due to constraints. Mage Gauntlet is hopefully going to pick up the pieces and tell the whole story throughout the next few games. Keep searching for clues.

Really digging the game. It was well worth the wait. One thing I would like, though, is to be able to access Game Center and read the whole achievement description through the game. On the GC icon, all of the achievements are cut off and you rarely get to read a whole sentence. I would just like to be able to read the entire achievement description for the chuckle at the end, hah.
EDIT: I'm also kind of sad to see Whale Trail as the game of the week. Ew.

At least Mage Gauntlet is selling better. (What's up with the "No Ratings"? There are plenty of reviews already, let alone ratings...)

We submitted a quick update yesterday that gets rid of openfeint and adds an in-game browser for achievements. It's a really nice browser, too, we think people will like it.

A few suggestions:
-Change icon (I think it's alright, but as someone stated earlier, it almost turned someone away from the game)
-Ability to view which challenges you have yet to complete for a level (missing stars)
-For iPad users, include the option to place the pause/magic menu to the left of the sword button
-Dialogue options: Always - First Playthrough - Never. When trying to get stars for a level, it can be annoying to sit through dialogue every time.
Minor nitpickings in my favorite RPG to ever hit the iOS platform. One more quick question, what's the level cap?

I actually died more times than I'd like to admit beating this level. The trick is really to fight as few enemies at a time as possible.
For the assassins, I find it most effective to dash towards them, and when they go to back stab you, you have a safe gap, and they are vunerable right after they attack (and can't backstab again for a little while)
For the melee orcs, it's just a matter of attacking then backing/dashing away, waiting for them to attack (and miss) and attacking again. Similar strategy with the spellcasting orcs.
The biggest problem of course is the large groups. When you come up to them just keep back-pedalling until only a few are following you, this is especially important if they have assassins and mages in the mix, as fighting all 3 types (magic, assassin, melee) will get you killed fast. Don't get greedy with trying to kill them fast, I died many many times killing an orc at the exact same time they killed me. If you pick your fights wisely like this, you should be able to save your hearts much better.

These are good tips. Really, the level's just too damn long for how early it is. I blame the fact that this is actually the very first level designed for the game that still mostly survived intact to its final form.
What I'm going to do is add more health urns and magic urns to compensate for the extreme length. It'll be like a celebratory power trip through their tent civilization. This would make the level really easy, though I think it could be fun. The alternative is shortening the level, which I really don't want to do.
I'm SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING, but don't quote me on it yet, to offer some sort of pointless reward to people that died in the orc forest three level before it's nerfed.

For the last one above, perhaps a "Skip" button could be placed strategically on-screen which takes you past that particular cut-scene?

Does anyone have any tips for the Stage 4 boss? (Gigantic Boar thing)
I seem to hit it so many times but it NEVER dies?!?!?!!?
So far I've learnt the attacking patterns and can pretty successfully dodge / dash past the fire balls but then I always slowly die to the lesser Boars @.@
I try to hit it with both magic and normal attacks as well... But I think I may have been under levelled as I skipped the Third Stage by accident thinking they were the same and haven't tried it since then.
Um, I also seem to have two re-tries left. I don't want to use them as I don't know how often they reset or whatever and the person who answered my earlier question seemed quite unsure. Is it two lives for the rest of the game or the level or ????

You get all 3 get-ups back every time you retry or go into a level. They're free, we don't have a hidden charge for them or anything. You been playing too many KRPGs!
I figure you're doing fine on the boar boss, it's just that you're not using the lives.
IVARO: You don't get your health back because then we'd have to design the game around the levelups. Though really, I just didn't want to be too MMO-ey.

Ah, don't nerf it. Yeah, it's long, but the challenge in that level is fun. Though I was kinda pissed off when I died 3 times and had to restart the level, haha. Shame on me for dying three times though, I underestimated the game's difficulty.
Maybe you could add a few more jars to make it more manageable without completely losing the challenge.

Just bought it and really like it.
The controls are great (Pro Stick)! Which is one of my rarest and therefor one of the highest praise a game can earn from me.
Setting and Ambient feels also 16bitish satisfying.
One thing I wished is seperate audio level controls for music and fx.
The music is great but after 10 minutes is the same level the loop gets on a bit annoying.
As fo Auto-rotation please also include a soft rotation lock!
thatīs it from me so far excellent game!
I am not fo far into the game but are there some auto save-points during the levels?
So that when you die, you donīt have to restart from the beginning of the level?
I think this is also MUST-Have options in modern games esp. if - as mentioned before -
the levels are so big!

I'd understand adding one or two health jars to that long Orc level or some more magic jars. But now I have more pride having 3-starred it before it gets the nerf. :D

Man, I can't get over how good this game is. Not just standing there mashing some buttons but having actual fight mechanics. The boss fights so far have been perfect. Kudos to the developers of this one.. it's a gem. Hopefully it sets a new standard in iOS rpg's.

Definitely REALLY enjoying MG. Like Robotwars said- the combat is really well implemented- attacks feel like they have weight, and the knockback is perfect; it's definitely the the most tactile rpg combat i've seen so far on iOS. Gratz, Kepa!

I just noticed that Mage Gauntlet is number 22 in the top 25 apps (not just games). I am unsure as to why Whale Trails got game of the week, and this did not. Rocketcat Games is certainly in my top 5 developers, thats through out all platforms. I am really glad this game is taking off like it did, congratulations RCG/Kepa on such a great game.

Whale trail has more mass apeal which I think factors into GOTW. I like em both in different ways and both are worth the money. But please put some damn things in all the plants, boxes, stautes, candles, etc that I go outta my way to smash in Mage Gauntlet.

This is a surprisingly good RPG, even has some nice object physics. One thing that's really annoying though is that there are way too much destructible objects, and none of them actually drop anything. Unlike Zelda where you can cut pretty much everything down and some of them will drop hearts, items, or money, in this game you can destroy everything but nothing will drop from them...

Got some mroe time in on this game...
first, don't change the icon. I think its a great icon and imo making the icon an image you only see once in the game and not actually on your character is kinda dumb.
Second, I find the charge attack kind of frustrating. There seems to be code that helps prevent mobs from overlapping each other, unfortunately this means when charging a group there is a good chance one of them will not get hit and it becomes an instant hit because during that charge, the mob has triggered his pre charge and stomps on you as soon as you stop. Maybe by building in a short range ability canceler the charge attack won't be such a big gamble to use.
I've also passed the pig boss, and while most of the mechanics were good, I didn't like not being able to see which part of the room he was currently aiming at. This coupled with the fact that the ipod screen is small enough to scroll the boss off screen makes the fire spread shot seem like a cheap shot.

Surprised it hasn't dropped yet, it probably will when I raise the price to 3 dollars after tonight. I wasn't expecting game of the week at all, to be honest. We make niche games as a point of pride.

The sky used to go even faster, will see if we can tweak the main menu some (not a hugely strong chance though since we're working on a new mode and such). Are you playing on an iPad or iPhone? I like how it looks on an iPhone, but I kind of agree that it borders on too chunky on an iPad. Not sure what we can do, to be honest, as if we zoomed out it might mess things up... will see later.

I intentionally made the charge somewhat narrow, so you have to be careful with it. It's narrower than a sword swing by a good margin. I pretty much had to do this, due to a combination of the stun effect and how with a high VIGOR stat you can charge extremely often.
The bosses were a big design challenge just because the screen is so tiny. He's always tries to aim at you. I just try to keep him onscreen when he's shooting. Not exactly sure what we can do to improve it, except for making the room smaller...

Thanks, I picked it up and I don't regret it. Thankfully, there's no typical "fetch" quests in lots of the iOS RPGs... argh I hate those. Love the controls, very responsive. The game is was a little hard at first because I'm not used to the "three hearts" thing instead of an HP bar.

I wonder if we should just provide more lives. Since if you want a challenge, you want to just do it without using the lives system, anyway...
This game has to be one of the most impressive iOS titles I've played to date. All the elements of a classic - story, gameplay, depth, music, fun factor, come together in Mage Gauntlet. The humor stands out as well -

Only finished world 2 and gotta say great game so far. The action feels tight and love the whole environment. While I know breaking items will drop nothing..I also feel compelled to break everything. lol.. When playing RPGs, I tend to "conserve" spells..but I'm slowing trying to unlearn that and just use spells more in this game. The spells system is a good way let people play with different spells instead of just spamming the ones they like.
The lack of a one button access to map bugged me at first..but now I don't even notice. The only thing other thing I don't like are the hidden paths (as a few others have mentioned). At least for my preference, I never liked looking for hidden paths in old rpgs. Personally, I'd rather grind a few levels then walk along all walls hoping to find an hidden path. But I feel like if I skip the hidden paths in this game..I'm going to miss out on some of the background story in this game.. =/ Don't know what you think of the idea where after you beat the game once, allow a setting in the option to enable "showing" where the hidden path is. Only allow this option if you've beaten the game once. You can do the lame thing of having an arrow point to the starting portion of the wall..or put a star or glowing "thing" over the wall. This way, people who don't like to look for hidden paths can beat the game once..then play again to access the hidden areas and not "miss" out on anything.
Aside from this, can't wait till after work to continue playing. =D
Is the update that was submitted include the "Arena Mode" ?
No, that was just a quick one. Arena mode requires us to build some new systems from the ground up, it's not "withheld content" that's ready to go.
Yeeaaah I'm not happy with the secrets. This wasn't how I originally intended the secrets to be, they were going to be much rarer, more obvious, and always have something interesting in them (unique art or a readable item or a hidden loot chest). It got changed due to a wacky misunderstanding, and it was so late in the process that I just didn't have the energy to redo all of them.
Hell, should we just give you (THE PLAYERS IN GENERAL I MEAN) infinite lives in story mode? I'm actually considering it, heh. Story mode was intended to be something everyone could beat, really. There's the three star system and master mode (you only get one extra life in it), so I'm really considering this...

I'm just at the gardens, but it's fun so far. The controls are extremely easy... i expected something much harder, but it's a joy controlling this game :)
I would have two questions though...
Is there any way to see what does exactly a spell do? Other than using them..? For example i have no idea what Lucky and Extralucky do...
The other question is that what i need to do for 3 stars on a level? I got 3 stars on the first one and 2 stars on the others after that one..

I found the Orc level brutal, I still have yet to beat it! (Leveled me up 20 times before I gave up).
The main "issue" I have with this level is that there are not ENOUGH heart canisters, especially since this is normal mode not master.
If you add say, 3 or 4 more heart canisters I should be able to beat it, while still keeping things challenging as I have to go and break the containers.
You also should be able to raise your total hearts from 3-5 based upon level ie. level 100 +1 heart, level 300 + another heart (level 1000 secret bonus heart)
That will keep people leveling up past the skill point cap. You know test it and stuff, see if its worth it.
The last thing I have a serious issue with is the odd gamecenter/open feint intergration... What happened here?
Can I use both at the same time with OF being my primary one I can choose to view achievements in game? Seems to not work for me at least.
I know that if I turn off OF then game center takes full control and I can't even check that from the game.
I recommend allowing for only 1 to be seen as the primary but achievements get saved to both so I stop switching back and forth to keep unlocking them...
It also caused a nasty bug where OF didn't work for me until I COMPLETELY RESTARTED my iPhone.
No infinite lives please. It is already easy enough with the option to restart the level.
Btw every time I exit the game, my ipad2 autorotation gets messed up ....

I'm more along the lines of infinite lives for normal mode so everyone can get through it. But keep it limited lives for the master mode for those who want the challenge (since that's the point of the master mode anyways).

Yeah, I'd keep Master mode exactly the same. Instead of giving infinite lives in story mode, I might give 5 instead of 3, but I dunno. Just seems like I should go all the way and make it infinite. You know, iOS audience and all.
In the sequel I think I'd like to get rid of the lives system and just make sure levels (areas between checkpoints) weren't too long/super far apart. I'd also bump up base health more, probably replace the hearts with a health bar.
You have to test out the spells to learn them, yeah.
I don't like the idea of infinite lives. I enjoy the challenge though I'll admit I became very frustrated on the 3rd orc level. Once I figured it out though and got my patience back it was okay.
If you want to balance that level, you could go for heart urns (more boring) or have several more spell urns (way more fun). All those big mobs were just begging for a good spell cast, but generally I would only get 2, to 4 if I'm lucky, decent offensive spells, with the others not being terribly helpful/fun against the large orc mobs. But using beam of light or chain lighting on those mobs while they were all lined up/bunched together was thoroughly satisfying :D
I'm also one of those people who is compulsively breaking every destructible, so I'm looking forward to that update that lets me read the achievements.
Also, tip for the boar boss:
Just stay up in the top right or left corner, you can't be hit in the very edge of the corner so you can pretty much harass the boss unharmed by him. Still need to watch out for the falling boars though, best thing you can do is use chain lightning and frost shards, and with some luck you can keep the boars off you and hit the boss.
I am getting frustrated as well at the third Orc stage ... There are so many f these mages and no spells to be used!

Yeah, but you said yourself you're proud of being a niche developer. Giving infinite lives because of the audience kinda goes against that philosohy. :P
There's an easy solution though. Just give the option to select Master Mode from the get go. Otherwise you would just be punishing the good player, making him go through a boring experience to get to the real thing.
Another option is to do something similar to what Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 does. If the player dies more than three times a message appears asking if he wants infinite lives. There's a catch though, if the player says yes the character will have to wear a ridiculous hat forever. Like a big pink bow or something. I think that would fit the witty style of the game pretty well. If the player also doesn't want to wear the ridiculous hat, then just sell an IAP for 0.99c to remove it (and he can keep the infinite lives, of course), heh.
Everybody wins. I mean, people who doesn't want any challenge at all is the same people that spend a fortune in IAPs anyway.
Or you could just outright sell infinite lives. But where's the fun in that?
Ahh, would just like to put it out there that I managed to defeat the Boar boss last night with one heart to spare and without using any lives! :D Rather happy about that. :P
Currently stuck on the 3rd Level on the 3rd Stage :S It's rather fun though, I think I should be able to do it tonight! :D

I am getting frustrated as well at the third Orc stage ... There are so many f these mages and no spells to be used!
I only found the third orc level frustrating because I was shooting for 3 stars. Its not that hard to just complete.
I used the spell gathering sword, with all the enemies thats a guaranteed bonus two spells and it cetainly helps whenever the toughest melee orcs show up (gold shirts). Two or three more spell urns would drastically drop the difficulty.
I saved my spells for whenever the gold shirts turned up, they give and take so much damage and can dash in any direction that avoiding spell casters or backstabbers in their presence is real heart in mouth stuff.
The length isn't an issue if you're not a compulsive "breaker", just leave heart urns alone when you don't need them and come back to them when you do.
The difficulty comes when so many varied enemy types work together, its not uncommon to avoid one orc type's damage zone by moving into another. Run past backstabbers and turn around, wait at a distance for spell casters, dodge their fire and move in.
I think the biggest difficulty change would be making sword dash invulnerable, most of my early deaths was from sword dashing and colliding with an enemy power like gold shirts rush.

People got stuck in the first world? Holy shit. That just blows my mind. Need spells to kill mages? what?
Then again I guess not even 200 people unlocked dwarven door in super quick hook so it makes sense.

Yeah we're submitting an update for that orc level. It will add 5 spell urns and more health urns, you'll be able to go on a rampage.
I think we'll just add one, maybe two extra lives more than currently. That should help people without completely trivializing the game. Master Mode stays the same, though, with just one extra life... I just don't want people to get completely stuck in Story Mode.
SEQUEL: Not sure! We're doing a spin-off first. It'll be a FREEMIUM (DON'T PANIC) randomized dungeon crawler using this game's combat mechanics, but with lots of different character classes.

Master Mode is unlocked just for beating the game. It's a remix of the game, with shortened levels, but much harder enemy groups and new nightmare variants in the levels.

Rocketcat games, yall have certainly outdid yourselves!
Amazing game, awesome focus on combat, really the best parts of secret of mana and any other action rpg.
One thing i can add for constructive criticism is that when swinging the sword, it seems kind of stiff when trying to chamge direction. In other words when swinging the sword, if i need to quickly swing left them swing up, it cant change direction as fast as i would like.
Its really a minor quibble, and the movable joystick works perfectly otherwise. Hell i wish most games used the joystick in the brilliant method done here.
Finally, i have put most of my points to refill the action meter. It allows me to use more of the action moves and dash more frequently.
Thank you rocketcat games!!
Really looking towards the freemium dungeon crawling game idea. I can totally see how a random dungeon generation action game would be just amazing!

Hey Kepa,
I'm currently working my way through the boar level after completing gardens, orcs, slimes.
My only suggestions are as follows:
More magic urns scattered around. I find I'm getting in the habit of simply storing the magic rather than using it "just in case I dont come across more".
The orc level is indeed quite long, and could use a couple more spell urns. It took me my second try to get 3 stars, the first try I died so only got 1 star.
This brings me to my main one - you should put a "portal pad" at the end of each sublevel which you can activate once you get there, that way when you inevitably have to walk back to the beginning to get that monster you missed, you can easily go "menu > warp to end" and jump to the end. There's no value in having to walk the whole level again and it's just a waste of time.
Maybe you can put an emblem on screen once the level has been cleared... change the color of the gem at the top right, some sort of permanent visual indication that the level has been cleared. A few times I wasn't sure if it was clear or not, worried I had missed the floating text. You could also have the end-of-level chevrons be red when not clear and blue when clear, or something. I like the HUD emblem though.
Aside from that the game is brilliant. Naturally I'm busting everything I see out of habit, but I can't say that I fault you for taking advantage of that compulsion :)
Managed to complete the Orc level, there was one area which I didn't manage to look at but was afraid that there would be a horde of Orcs or something and didn't trust myself with only half a heart! I should really use more spells though as I had 4 sitting around when I finished it :S
Feels good though. Don't really know if it's necessary to add more lives - wouldn't that just make it easier, and once you get the Arcane Heart trinket you could go back and finish the level to three stars - that extra heart essentially gives you an extra life anyway.
Ziekke
10-21-2011, 09:05 PM
Oh yea, that's what I wanted to say..
Lives - for normal mode you might as well go unlimited. I don't see the purpose for only 3 lives when the 3 star bonus is already lost after losing one.
"making it too easy" doesn't make sense, really, since if I don't want it to be that easy for me - or if I happen to die often enough to go into the 4th+ life lost - I can always opt out and restart on my own :)
At the same time though, I've only needed 1, infrequently.. but I don't know how that track record stacks up to later levels yet.

Sorry about that door, guys.
The door locking in Tetramont's first level is from a loose trigger left over from early designs of the map. We fixed it on our side and it will be in the next hotfix (after the current one is through approval).
It only triggers when you walk around south from the starting position in the level. To avoid the door from locking, just walk directly north when the level starts.
There are no secrets or hidden rooms in that specific area so don't worry about losing any opportunities to find anything there.

I have to say, I've been enjoying the game quite a bit so far. However, unlike most of the other people here, I say it like it is (or the way I think it is), without sugar coating it ;) I like to think that devs prefer constructive criticism rather than watered-down complaints covered in praise.
1) Many levels are way too long and just become too repetitive. The most fun I have is fighting those mini-bosses and those monsters that you actually have to dash around to dodge their attacks. Those monsters that just rush you are way too easy to kill...even if there are 50 of them. Your character has such a wide swing that she can hit practically everything in almost 180 deg arc.
2) Those jars of Haste buff are way too short. It lasts like 5 seconds...just long enough for me to walk out of the secret area I managed to find it in. From what I've seen, they only increase your movement speed, and having that speed really helps to decrease the annoyance of some of the excessively large area size (since you can move twice as fast through it). If the haste were to last as long as the shield (before it automatically disappears), I think it would be much more useful. Heck, you could even make it so that you lose haste if you get damaged.
3) If getting a health jar when your health is full gives you a shield, then I think that getting a spell when your spells are full (4 spells) should provide you with something different than the same shield. Maybe some kind of buff for your sword attack?
4) I agree with many others that the boss fights are the most fun. Those boss fights are really the only time I feel the need to use spells. All other monsters (even most mini-bosses) seem so harmless that I can just use dash to dodge their attacks and hack away at them. Maybe give them a little less predictable attack patterns? Instead of always charging up their attack for 2 seconds, have them sometimes charge for only 1 second and do half as much damage, etc. Every monster only has a single attack pattern which makes it extremely easy to learn and counter them. For example, those Golem Knights, all I need to do is stand at a 45 deg angle from them and they can't touch me. They just keep swinging a useless projectile.
5) Are most hats just cosmetic? It would be interesting if they did something more than just change your character's appearance. For example, wearing the slime hat causes you to take less damage from slimes, or boosts some stat, etc. Although I expect you purposely decided to leave hats as cosmetic only.
That's all I can think of right now. You guys did a really good job overall with the game, and I'm looking forward to the arena update and other future updates!

Just a note.. there's a big door that comes down in tetramonts - 2 that doesn't seem to go back up and it's preventing me from backtracking to missed monsters.
Is this intentional? I can attach a pic if necessary.
It's the one going into the square room on the furthest east on the map (directly north of the long hallway with the book)

You can only access your wardrobe on the world map between levels.
If you don't get the Rocketcat Pack for free, restart the game when in a wifi hotspot. That should fix it.
@Zaraf: Will see if we can improve the enemies a bit in the spinoff. The enemies that shoot a projectile are really the most interesting to fight. The haste jars are mostly just to get you back on the main path. Originally you were going to get random buffs for breaking spell urns when full, but that was really tricky to balance. Hats are just cosmetic, balancing 110 different hat effects would have been a nightmare.

maybe instead of adding infinite lives, you could add a new "mode" that serves as a lower difficulty level and implements the infinite lives.
so it'd be ***casual mode (different name?) > story mode > master mode***
also, i'd like to add my support for changing the end of level arrows to red if you haven't cleared the level yet. i'm usually fine, but sometimes I miss the sweet, victorious purple words (or think I miss it, which is just as bad).
Currently 3-starred everything up to Undergarden 2. It's been a while since I played a great rpg like this.
Personally, I'd rather keep the difficulty how it is (though I guess the orc level could use a couple more magic urns. it's pretty hard compared to the previous level), but I know that not everyone wants to spend so much time on a single level when there are so many levels. I also don't mind searching for the secrets, since there's almost always a clue on the ground or a visible part of the room on the screen. But I guess I'm weird like that. I just can't seem to bring myself to notice/care about all of the faults that others are seeing.

I probably can't contribute much more to what's already been said on this game, but I just wanted to say this is probably the most fun I've had with an action rpg since the best of the Zelda games. I love Hook Worlds / Super Hook Champ so I thought this could be good, but I think Rocketcat have got a classic on their hands here. It puts pretty much every other action rpg on ios to shame and shows how it should be done, with Rocketcat's ability to create graphics and gameplay that are both old-school and wonderfully fresh - with a terrific sense of humour as well. And also, as their input into these forums shows, they're a developer that is interested in what the players think and in supporting the game in the future. Fantastic!
I am still stuck at orc3 ...honestly I would just tuned the length. This level is somewhat too long.i did nit loose a single heart, but then when I expect the end more show up and I die.
Also I am always restarting the level when I die I never use lives (I assume lives do not reset at the end of a level correct?), I see no need for extra lives except when you decide to remove the option to start from scratch.
Also .... What about adding icade support? This would make the playing experience simply perfect! Great game with great controls!
Ps: I play in iPad and could not care less of universal support

If you use both of your lifes and then you will restart the level you will gain additional 2 lifes.
As soon as you restart the level you will gain 2 lifes to respawn.
And now Im stuck in the Sealed Tower gold level.Kepa should add some additional spells there as well.

IMO spells should work by a cooldown basis, rather than a collectible one.
What happens is spells become a secondary aspect of the game, when really it's one of the game's most interesting features.
Levelling up also seems to have hardly enough impact- it plays like a skill based action game more than an RPG, which is probably the intention, but there's a lot of potential here.
That said this is still one of my GOTYs for the iPhone, just those things that keep it from being flawless for me = )

Its not really that hard, I completed it on my 7th try lol.Sometimes you will have to just run away from enemies not always defeating them.
Well, I am want to kill them all!!! This is why I am stuck, I guess ...
Update: I did the same ... Just ran as fast as I could :-) And the boss was almost trivial.
kepa may e you want to put some restrictions in the fact we can run away like this

Guys, in wich skill(s) do you put your skill points in?
And how can you 3-star a level?

I love how you incorporated all of the previous enemies throughout the game in the Tower Pinnacle levels.
