Hello all,
Just wanted to share an early pre-alpha gameplay video of the new shmup that I'm working on. I'm trying to capture the feeling/style of the classic shooters of the 90's like Raiden/Strikers 1945.
There are no music yet but the soundtracks for this game is being created by BLANKFIELD (http://blankfield.but.jp/), which does a lot of great touhou remixes. So even if the game turns out to suck, rest assured the music will rock!
ps. sorry about the video quality, it's recorded off of my iphone. Does anyone know of a good way of doing screen recording?

Looks great!
A personal thing for me is I'd prefer if the background and the enemies to be different color so you can better see the enemies. In Danmaku Unlimited, they're pretty similar in color to me so they kind of just blend into the background. Otherwise looking forward to this! =D

- yes there'll be 1:1 control!
- the enemies have a glow around them to make them stand out against the background but yes that stage in particular is very teal and have a predominantly teal coloured enemy set, probably need to do something about that :/
- chances are it won't work with 2G devices :( but who knows I may have a stroke of genius during the optimization phase!

the game is tentatively scheduled to be completed around end of jan/early feb. But I'd like to get it right instead of working around a release date so it could be a little bit later than that.

Hope that means an update will be given to Danmaku with this engine and 1 to 1 control and maybe even no annoying bar at the bottom of the screen. :)

yep, it looks great and controls looks good, but it would be also cool if danmaku controls could be improved too.

It's been quite busy dealing with RL and finishing up the game, but everything is going well. The music has recently arrived from BLANKFIELD and I can say it is 100% awesome. Right now development is mostly at the polish and gamecenter integration phase. Hopefully I can get some better quality video up soon.
And yes after SS is done I'll be working on an update to bring danmaku up to date, specifically the 1:1 control and dynamic screen scaling.

that is really great, danmaku is probably only one shump in appstore which is close to the quality of cave games with maybe only one drawback of controls.

Look very nice! I love Shootem up, especially when the whole screen is full of missile/shot/whatever-they-throw-at-you :)

When it's done ;), though seeing the wealth of shumps coming in the month of February, I'm galvanized to put in some more work to make SS have more of a chance against the giants in the genre. Either way it'll be a great month for shmup fans! Personally quite looking forward to Darius...

I'd be really galvanized if this was released. I really thing this will be better than Shogun. ;)

Woot! Can't wait. Personally, Danmaku Unlimited is my favorite iOS bullet hell...even more than Cave's. =P
But if you want to avoid the glut of shmups..you can hold off on the release..even though that'll make the wait even harder. ;)

The reason i ask is because i find that the 'layering' of the sound effects in DMU means that sometimes the effects end up WAY too loud- for example, on the mid-boss of st.1, when it's firing the barrage of lasers at you, that high-pitched 'whoosh' sound is really piercing. Currently, i'm playing with the music at 100%, but SFX at only 50% to get over this problem.

That's a problem that I recently discovered as well while integrating the audio. I'm honestly not an expert in sound effects as I'm relying on an open source audio library, but I'll probably limit the number of sounds that can happen simultaneously so the layering doesn't get out of hand.

Will there be classic control option? I actually liked and to be honest PREFER the current Danmaku controls. Not that 1 : 1 is bad, just that i prefer to keep my fingers on the bottom of the screen on my iPad and use that little space to control my ship. I personally think that you guys nailed it with the control and sensitivity for iOS shooters on Danmaku.
And also thanks for Danmaku, guys. That IS one of my favourite shooters. It reminded me of Mars Matrix on DC and Battle Garegga on SS. Keep it up! Looking forward to Storm Strikers. :D

yup there will be the option to choose between relative and 1:1. Glad you enjoyed Danmaku, I've been on crunch time mode for the past couple of weeks working on SS so hopefully it won't be too long now!

At this point it's just prepping for upload for review and writing up the app store descriptions, so very very soon :) oh I'm also working on a launch trailer so there should be some exciting footage to share with you guys soon!

Arcade EX is a more intense version of the arcade run with bullets flying at a much faster speed. Arcade EX on extreme is...quite extreme. The game will be priced at 1.99USD but to help with getting more exposure for the game there'll be a launch sale of the game at 0.99, probably for the first 3 days to a week? not quite set on that one yet.
As for the universal build, it's something that i'd want to do but simply couldn't fit it into the timetable. The in-house engine is quite lacking at this moment when it comes to menu editing and doing a whole set of ipad menus and possibly new artwork will require a lot of time. For what it's worth, on an ipad2 the game will run with standard def menus and HD-graphics in game, instead of the other way around for a certain other game ;)

the video looks just fantastic, i dont know how it plays but if you guys improved control scheme of danmaku than this game should be on the cave level. if apple approves it fast are you going to wait for the launch date anyway or release it earlier?

Yes it runs at retina resolution on the ipad 2.
As for the release date I'd like to keep it at least around that week in March, as a contingency in case any game-breaking bug crops up, but chances are the game won't be approved until that week anyway.
In the meantime I'd like to do an informal poll to see what type of new fighters would you guys like to have in game? I'll be working on adding new planes periodically post-launch so I'm open to suggestions!
the current roster includes:
Eurofighter Typhoon
F-35
F-22
Mig-21
2 fighters based on ones from Danmaku
fighter based on the F/A-37 Strega from Philosoma (one of my favorite shmup)
already planned to make:
F-117
Avro CF-105 Arrow
Chengdu J-20
note that they will only be based on those planes, I don't want to get into any possible copyright issues :)

:( I really hope the game does well and you consider a universal version. I absolutely adored Danmaku Unlimited, and this looks fantastic, but I can't stand using 2X mode.

Why would you ask something about a device not even out yet...?The ipad3 release is imminent. It was mentioned that the game runs @ retina resolution on ipad2, but ipad2 doesn't have retina resolution. Ipad3 probably will.

Mostly engine updates like screen scaling and better camera panning. And I'm pretty confident that the crashing on 3rd gen device is really fixed this time around! It had to do with the engine not freeing up textures when going into the next stage. Pretty huge blunder on my part for not catching it sooner, to quote Futurama "I was young and reckless!"
