View Full Version : Tony Hawk 2 for iPhone video (legit or laborious fake)
Believe me I stared at this video 5 times to see if it was fake. Seems legit to me.
Video reupped.

Mega-hit Tony Hawk 2 complete with 10 levels plus 3 bonus levels FOR THE iPhone!!! THE definitive skateboarding game.
Not a fan of the big buttons though. And how does this control scheme accounts for all the different moves that were mapped to the Playstation dpad?

I don't know why they couldn't have had the buttons be invisible quadrants of the screen like Crazy Snowboard or swipes like Vans Sk8. Big buttons blocking the screen are horrible!

perhaps theres only a limited amount of moves... i would have thought swiping in one direction while pressing a grab/kick/grind button would pull of different moves but i guess you dont really see him doing that in the video
still looks sick, i played the hell out of a tony hawk 2 demo on my ps1 lol, hope this is legit!

That looks a lot like the Dreamcast version which makes sense as it had very similar graphical capabilities (and even a related GPU) to the iPhone. Not saying it's definately real, just that it's more than possible.
The Dreamcast could be an interesting starting point for iPhone ports. PS1 games are far too primitive, PS2 far too demanding.
Crazy Taxi anyone?

Sometimes on screen, the player would grab, but the guy wouldn't have pressed grab atall....

I don't mind the buttons. But I am curious how they will get all the trick combination right.

Nice, let us know what they say. A port of THPS2 seems possible and I spent many hours on the PC playing that game. I believe it is the best Tony Hawk game of all time. From the video, that graphics actually look a little sharper I guess because of the small screen. It would be sweet if this was real!

Eh...not really. Dreamcast is, as far as game development, a bit more powerful than iTouch/Phone.
I fell into that same trap of thinking the way you are now, as the MBX series is more powerful than the CLX2 series used in Dreamcast (labled PowerVR2DC), but the iPhone uses MBX-lite, not full fledged MBX, and DC had both dedicated VRAM and the SH-4 processor had an FPU to handle complex math, which the ARM11 used in iTouch/Phone lacks.
Simon Jeffrey, current president of Sega of America (oh for the days of Tom Kalinske, the last good SoA head honcho), was the one who stated it was "as powerful as Dreamcast", but he was not spot on.
And, just to throw this out there again, nearly a decade after it first turned up...DC and PS2 were not that far apart in capability. Seriously.
I wasn't aware of that Simon Jeffrey quote. Just thinking out loud.
Obviously comparisons of relative speed have to be taken with a pinch of salt but, as someone who developed (indirectly, in that I worked on the PS1/PC original) for Dreamcast I remember it as being several times faster than the PS1 and holding up very well to comparisons with PS2 but this changed as people got to grips with the pain of programming for PS2.
I agree that the Dreamcast was a great and underated machine, killed off by EA's ignoring it and PS2 pre hype but suspect that in raw polygon pushing terms, The PS2 had it beat by about 10 to 1 by the end, putting it in iPhone territory.
It's also worth remembering that The Dreamcast had twice the on screen pixels of an iPhone so would need twice the pixel pushing power just to keep up.
I mentioned the Dreamcast in this thread because I had that version of THPS2. I remember the PS2 version was the same only slightly uglier thanks to it's less powerful texture filtering etc. It's probably the only THPS game to be targeted at Dreamcast level hardware and we seem to be seeing it, rather than THPS or THPS3 targetted at the iphone. Just thought it was interesting.

I dont know, as much as I freaking loved TH2 (My favourite of the Series, ESPECIALLY the music) I dont know about this. Regardless if it was fake or not, its going to be harder than hell to pull off individual tricks, not to mention the manuals and special tricks, that require multiple direction taps and then the trick button. I just dont see this happening, at least in a clean and comfortable manner, on the iPhone. I would be to stressed trying to pull it all off. And how he was using the accellerometer (sp?) to balance while grinding? I dont know about everyone else but I grinded as long as humanly possible tapping left and right to stay centered AS MUCH as possible, getting to the point where you start leaning left and right extremely fast. This takes lots of practice and pushing the buttons was REALLY hard, even when you got real good at it. I just dont see that working for that specific move, as I think it would be retarded to try and move side to side in time ahahah

http://appgamer.net/news/2009/may/12/tony-hawks-pro-skater-2-iphone/
I don’t know about you but our reaction to this game went something like this :
“OMFG Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 on the iPhone!”
A video has been discovered demonstrating Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 gameplay on Apple’s iPhone. The authenticity of the video is still to be determined. If the video is genuine then this could develop something similar to Nintendo’s Virtual Console or Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade on the iPhone, imagine playing Final Fantasy VII or Tekken on your iPhone.
The description on the video boasts:
“All 10 levels plus 3 bonus levels with incredible graphics and blazing frame rate make this THE definitive skateboarding game for the iPhone. Tony Hawk in all his glory!!”.
As you can see the graphics are the same as the original version and the game features the same amazing sound track, however the controls seem to be an issue. Point scoring is achieved by chaining big moves together, which means you need intuitive controls. Having to select moves on screen seems to limit you almost exclusively to Kick, Grind, Grab and Stall. Without adding different commands it looks impossible to perform extra moves. It will be interesting to see how the developers overcome this issue.
The video shows that the game has been developed by LTI Grey Matter. According to their website they have aided in the development of over 30 games including massive titles such as Mercenaries 2 and Jade Empire. Fingers crossed the game is real and we will be popping moves shortly.
Something's really wrong with this video :
The screen is clearly 4:3 ... iPhone is 15:10 ... And the phone in the video pretends to be an iPhone.
Plus, there is no official news from Neversoft (or affiliates).
Doubt is overwhelming me ...

Im very skeptical. Look at around :13 and see a little jump in the vid and then it fades to black. why would then need to use another take? COuld possible be on a device other than iPhone.

Yeah, this is looking more and more sketchy to me. But, to those wondering how he does all the different moves, you actually flick off the button in a different direction to perform that direction's trick.
EDIT: I just realized I mad a terrible pun here. SKETHCY! HA!

We can confirm that it’s 100% real.
That’s right — we had a chance to talk to an inside source and got the full story. This is a full port of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2, soundtrack and all the levels included, running flawlessly on an iPod Touch. In the video, the white cord you see coming from the device is running sound directly into the camera.
The developer was tight lipped as to whether or not we’d actually see this port in the iTunes App Store. But what we do know is that if the buzz raised over this game video is any indication of the buzz that the full app would receive, the people clearly want it.

Update: IGN contacted Activision for confirmation of the allegedly leaked footage and an iPhone version of Hawk 2, but reps for the publisher said the video in question is just a mock-up, presumably by some overzealous fan, and not at all sanctioned by the company. It has no such iPhone Hawk game in development.

If it's real or if it isn't, it doesn't really matter if activision won't publish it. They own the exclusive rights to publishing a Tony hawk game.. PERIOD. Would be cool if it's real but unless they pull all references to TH out if the game it'll never see the light of day, even then it might not be legal to distribute. Sorry to burst your bubbles lol

In a year when we’ll see some of the biggest game franchises coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch, we want to, no we NEED to see Tony Hawk on the iPhone as well.
By the way, happy birthday Tony Hawk!

Just kiddin, you are very right. But! If this is just some port some renegade devs made work on the iPhone then maybe they can get it to sneak past Apples review process just for a couple a days so we can all pick it up. I read on Slidetoplay that they weren't allowed to post that video to the public, it was only for Activision and some other people's eyes.
Some other grave news is that the only way the game can be released on the App Store is if Activision approves of it because they hold the rights to that game. If Activision doesn't see a huge demand for this game, they can just decline, and this game may never appear on the App Store.
So right now, the only thing we're waiting for is Activision saying yes... or saying no.

It may or may not be fake. It looks pretty solid, though. As far as I know Activision doesn't make any games for touch apps of the iPhone or iPod. What they might do however, is farm it out to a third party developer and then beta test it, sometimes in Europe first. Hence, the video.
