Does anyone know if there have been changes in the accelerometer from the original iPhone vs. the 3GB/iPod Touch? I can't seam to find any info on the iPhone internal mechanics.
I have the original and almost every game that uses it is almost impossible to control. Well, frustrating at best. Maybe it is just a programming issue. I have read a few comments from devs about creating response curves, etc. so that it isn't so flaky.
Anyway, nice to meet everyone here. I am new to the iPhone games and this forum. Sorry if I am asking something that has already been discussed.

I have a first gen and don't have any issues with it.
It may just be the angle that you are playing at.
an example: In Pole Position, if you hold your device and 90 degrees the steering will be slow and unresponsive. If you play at 45 degrees the steering becomes much more sensitive. If you play with it perpendicular to the floor then the game is uncontrollable.
the accelerometer (at least in the patent info) looks something like this

(if it doesn't turn out it should look like a ball with a prong on the top bottom left and right)
gravity makes a piece moves and sends out an electrical charge
when you hold it upright the piece falls to the bottom, and activates only the bottom sensor.
when you play at an angle the piece travel diagonally, so it activates more than one sensor and makes for a finer control.
Ifixit did a teardown of both iphones and they made no mention of the accelerometer being different (be it make or manufacturer)
hope that helps, and welcome to the boards!

I want apple to update their maps app on the iPod touch. Google earth and other programs find my exact location right next to the location the iPhone 3g says I am. The maps app makes a huge circle around my house, the ones on my sides and the building behind me.

Its not the hardware - its the developer ;-)
Accelerometers are a tricky pile of kit. Fastlane Street racing is about the only racing game that has it right in that genera.
And in the Sports area, TouchSports tennis uses it well. Check out this video here how we used it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3-Imj5f7tI
Simple Left/right tilt after a single touch input. We will expand it afterwords but want to keep the controls very easy and not cumbersome.
Thx!

I developed a game using the accelerometer and have a fist gen Iphone, a 3G and a iPod touch (first gen). All devices seem to behave the same regarding the accelerometer. I see no differences.

Scoops has received many reviews claiming the tilt control is more accurate and easier to use than expected, it is definitely up to the developer to succeed or fail when it comes to game controls using the accelerometer.
