Okay so as I'm going through reviews, and this forum, some people say all their contacts disappeared?
I'm sorta afraid to jailbreak my phone now, if I was to have to take my phone to get it fixed, and had to restore it (so I wouldn't get in trouble for jailbreaking it..) would I loose all my contacts then too?

help?
=ss

they cant do shit for the jailbreak its your property

instead of shift restore try shift update

you can try going to the place where u got it to see if they could save em

I had a few questions...

Will all of my apps be there after running redsn0w to jailbreak it?
&
I also read that i need to do a fresh restore before attempting to jailbreak.
Is that needed?

Yup all your apps are still there after using redsn0w to jailbreak.

And no it's not needed, just recommended I guess. I don't usually do a restore first, no problems here.

Awesome and thank you.
Sorry... haha one more question... somethings just aren't answered on a lot of these tutorials.

Do i need to have iTunes on/off? because I know on one step I have to have the phone plugged in and then turned OFF. So does that mean I should eject it from itunes immediately and just cut off iTunes before i even run redsn0w?

No a restore is not needed, but a backup is highly recommended.

I would recommend a restore if you have a lot of apps on your device as it tends to make the jailbreak last a lot longer than if you were starting with a restored device.

Back up first, restore if you have lots of apps and then jailbreak.

I was fine when I jailbroke my 3G, I only had about one and a half pages of apps at the time so I had no lag issues or hanging problems during jailbreak. Those that have lag and hanging issues are usually the ones that have 7, 8, or 9 pages filled with apps.

But upgrading to 3.0 will wipe out everything on the phone correct?
How do I export my contacts on my iPhone (changed and added tons yesterday) to my laptop to save them if everything will be wiped before upgrading to 3.0?
Oh and redsn0w is needed for jailbreaking 3.0 firmware correct? Not Quickpwn anymore? How about unlocking the phone?
Thanks and apologies for asking in someone else's thread. x3

Redsn0w does that for you. When you open the program and start following the steps, it should automatically close itunes for you :)

Sync to your computer before you upgrade and after the upgrade you can just sync from backup, which will bring everything back except jailbroken stuff. But if you just upgrade it, it shouldn't get rid of everything.

On a Mac the contacts are synced with Address Book and saved in there. On PC's, you can sync them with Outlook to save them. Or just create a backup in itunes and it should put them back on.

redsn0w is the best jailbreaking program, yes.

Unlocking your phone comes after you are done jailbreaking it, you add a repo and download the tool "Ultrasn0w" to unlock any phone on 3.0

No, when redsn0w is saying "waiting for reboot" and it's not rebooting, leave redsn0w open and just unplug the cord and plug it back in.

Idk what to do now that you closed stuff. Try holding both the home button and power button down for ten seconds together and see if it comes back on. And then try again if it does.

No i didnt restore... I didnt see a reason to. I just took off around 1/2 of my apps and now I want to put them back on.

I can't download new apps through iTunes now and sync them?

Zincous
08-04-2009, 10:36 AM
Oh, so you still have half your apps.

Yeah the ones you deleted from your device can be synced back on, when your device is plugged in to itunes, the tabs at the top of the screen "Summary, info, music" etc... the one on the far right is "applications:

Go make sure "sync apps" and "selected apps" are both selected. And then go through that box and check any apps you want on your device.

Or just got back into the itunes app store and just re-download anything you want for free. It doesn't charge you for downloading an app you've already purchased.

Thanks for clearing it.
However I just realized 3.0.1 was released (though I think it really has no difference to 3.0...). Would the entire process be different if upgrading from 2.2.1 to 3.0.1 instead of 3.0? Will different tools be used and the process be any different?

For some reason cannot access that web page, maybe blocked as well by government.
Can you link me to another site with precise step-by-step instructions? Or if it is simple can you summarize here? Thanks.

Oh, yeah that's fine, here:

Recycling goodness
Short version:
You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.
More details:
The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.
And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.
We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid.

Thanks very much for the summary.
I notice it says "redsn0w 0.8", however all sites I searched on the web for downloading redn0w gives a link for version 0.7.1, and some sites says something about "jailbreaking 3.0 beta 2/3/4/5". What is the difference between versions 0.8 and 0.7.1, and what do the betas mean?

I didn't know there's a v0.8 out. What's new?

I did a quick search and apparently the only difference is that 0.8 adds 3GS compatibility.
Oh and does anyone know where to download the latest "3.0 firmware restore" file (the one that ends in .ipsw)?

Ok I upgraded to 3.0.1 (surprisingly all the apps and app data are still there! O.O), and now I'm running redsn0w. It asks me if I want to install Cydia and Icy. I know Cydia is a must, what's Icy? Do I need to install it?

Zincous
08-06-2009, 12:45 PM
Icy is another thing like cydia. You don't need it. Cydia is better and has everything in it anyway.
