Hi toucharcade,

many of you like the game's visuals but were afraid about the gameplay of Blimp. So the game is almost ready and we made a HD video of gameplay.
Make sure you watch the HD! :)
-VRYMRfVrIQ

The global scoreboard will be disabled in version 1.0 due to need for every app to be OS3.0 ready. We've experienced some problems with Facebook connect in OS3.0 version (you will upload your score to our Blimp facebook app so you can check up with your friends). The first update 1.1 will be delivered right away with global scoreboard ready.

We are planning to add online multiplayer with special multiplayer map pack. It'll be time challenge when you see your opponents as ghosts and who will finish the level first wins! And it'll also be a kind of deathmatch / capture the flag, where you have to steal opponents flag and / or kill him. More details about this coming soon.

The game will be in Appstore in early June and will cost 2.99$. We are also planning to add new levels in free updates.

Who wants to win any promo codes follow as on twitter, we will post some codes there when the game is in Appstore.

Also one more thing: who wants to be a game tester and spread the word around after trying out?

Well you already know my feelings on beta testing ;)

There are also 4-5 other users here that I know are quite good at beta testing as well. They aren't just interested in getting an early build and not contributing (the reason gamevil won't do open betas now)

I'll PM them and hopefully they will sign on soon

Ok, Just played the tutorial and first level. Without gushing too much...

OMFG!

The presentation is outstanding. The music is stellar. The controls are extremely responsive.

The background on Noraa is absolutely gorgeous.

I'm going back to playing more now.

To the other Beta testers:
PLEASE, reboot before you start playing. While the game loaded just fine, and I could fly up, the tilt controls didn't work at all. After a reboot everything was just fine.

Thank you for nice comment. Hope you like the rest as well.

We tried to polish everything in the game, the development took us about 5 months. Many times someone had to say "STOP, no more tuning" :).

BTW thanks for the 'tilt controls not responsive thing'. We'll look into this.

Is enemy placement on levels at all randomized or all carefully pre-scripted?

Pre scripted... sorta

there are mortars that are stationary and are in the same places when I play. There are also enemy tanks and blimps. They are able to move so they start in the same place but they are constantly moving to attack you.

Just played the tutorial.

Here are my initial impressions:

1. Immersive engaging theme throughout. The artwork is really amazing. You should really see the HD gameplay video to know what I mean. You can say that the backgrounds are similar in style to the backdrops of 7CitiedTD (painting-like).

2. The soundtrack is pretty good. It says that its designed for headphones. Using my Shure SE210, they are not as great as Zen Bound, but you can tell a lot of effort was put into the layering of all the sounds. Somehow it makes you feel that you are in some Indiana Jones movie (maybe its because of all the artwork as well). In any case, I don't mind having to download a bigger file if it means I can get an even fuller effect of the soundtrack. Not sure if they can compress it less though.

3. One additional note about sound+theme though: I find it a bit weird that the soundtrack has submarine-like sounds in it (underwater echos and radar beeps). Or maybe I'm hearing wrongly.

4. Plenty of missions. Beta has (edit: 4 levels) and actual game has 20. For the intended release price of 2.99, that's a steal (although not sure whats the length of each level. Will comment more on this next time). Level select is done by rotating a globe. A nice commendable touch and polish compared to other plain button menus you see in most games.

5. Missions (I haven't played past tutorial) consist of either destroying enemies with bombs, rescuing people, and/or collecting and dropping packets. In every mission, you should keep a look out at your upper status bar (left to right): the number of people to rescue, the number of objectives to accomplish, the number of bombs remaining, your health bar, and the remaining time to complete the level. Obstacles consist of fans that blow you away, vents shooting a wall of fire at constant intervals, and paths that you have to maneuver through. I can imagine a varied level design and a nice story the devs can weave into each level.

6. The controls are well thought out. When I first saw the video, I thought the accelerometer controls all movement. Apparently, only the movement direction is controlled by tilting (left and right). Upward thrust is done by touching the lower right of the screen and dropping bombs is done by touching the lower left of the screen. It takes a little bit of practice to get used to the controls but its workable. I find the controls not as finegrained as DropShip (which has an even higher learning curve), but then again, this is a blimp. So its supposed to be harder to control than a spacecraft lol.

Comparison with other games:
I can only think of DropShip and Graviton that resembles this kind of game on the iTouch. DropShip levels are pretty boring after awhile and ngmoco kinda skipped the whole artwork process by making everything vectorized. I've played a little bit of Graviton but I prefer the graphic style of Blimp.

Will post more impressions after going through the levels

Edit: Craneballs, will PM you with my other comments and feedback. Thanks!

Will post more impressions after mid way through the game (10 or so levels) :)

Edit: Craneballs, will PM you with my other comments and feedback. Thanks!

There are only four levels unlocked in this build
20 levels will be available in 1.0
More will be added in updates

The sound you are thinking of is the sound of echolocation and is not the sound in the game. It's a series of musical notes over morse code with the hum from what I can only describe as an alien space ship underneath it all. I'm using Shure e5c's with custom molding.

You really shouldn't comment about what the levels consist of when you admit that you haven't played past the tutorial.

Even though we didn't have to sign a Non Disclosure agreement you should be careful with posting more impressions as I'm sure the dev doesn't want the story and level design being spoiled for those that get the game. ;)

I'm commenting so that people can know what to expect (at the very least) out of the levels. The only caveat is that the levels could be more than what I mentioned. But definitely not less.

you should be careful with posting more impressions as I'm sure the dev doesn't want the story and level design being spoiled for those that get the game. ;) Thanks VeganTnT. I dont think this would be a problem. The further impressions I wanted to post was only to confirm or build on what I have already mentioned. And since only 4 levels are unlocked in the build as you mentioned, there should also be no need to worry that I will spoil all the level stories :-)

The sound you are thinking of is the sound of echolocation and is not the sound in the game. It's a series of musical notes over morse code with the hum from what I can only describe as an alien space ship underneath it all. I'm using Shure e5c's with custom molding. ;) My earphones are certainly not the best, but its not bad either. I'm just saying that the soundtrack is fantastic but: 1) some of the sounds seem like they are not about blimps (which can be fine), and 2) its so good that I want a higher quality soundtrack if possible :-)

PS: I edited my original post so your quote has some erroneous information (e.g. number of levels in the build)

I didn't meant for my post to sound like you have done something wrong. If it came off like that then I apologize.

I just meant that you can't say what all the levels consist of because the devs might have something special that they aren't showing us just yet. We wpn't know til the game is released. I mentioned my headphones cause they are also shure so I thought I'd share that.

I really didn't know what kind of impression you were going to do or what was going to be said. Though I'd like to think that everyone is responsible and conscious of what they write, I know that sometimes we (myself included) aren't.

I'd rather just give a friendly reminder than see someone get in trouble for something I could have prevented by just saying something, you know?

So again, my apologies is my post sounded harsh. It wasn't my intention at all

Cheers!

Overall, I am loving the game. The graphics are wonderful, very colorful and detailed. I like the music too just because it's nothing too crazy and wild, but enough to tense you up about whether you are going to make it through the level without dieing or running out of time.

The tutorial was enough information to learn how to play and is not over done with info like some are. Nice touch with the spinning map, I like that! ;) I am glad that the levels do start out easy enough and from what I've seen they don't progress so much that it becomes too difficult after the first few levels.

Controls are excellent, though it takes a bit of touch and finesse at times. I am so used to games that have you button mashing, but this isn't one of them. I like that, because it gives you a new gaming experience. I myself use the hot air a little bit too much and usually go flying into a wall or straight into the enemy! The game is relatively relaxing but tense at the same time. I think you guys have found the perfect balance between the two. I am very impressed and am excited to play the whole game upon release! Keep up the great work guys!

Working fine so far, just had a question. When the final version is released, will we NEED a facebook account in order to submit/view global high scores. I know FB is a popular place, but I see it more as a plague.

And just in case some of you may have missed it, you can scroll the globe during level select (took me a min to figure that out).

Yes you need a facebook account in order to post high score, althou you don't need it to just see global score. You must understand it's because we needed to sync your playing with an account on the internet. We chose facebook. It's much better than creating our own login system.

This game is INCREDIBLE.

It's so smooth, and, well, just very enjoyable I guess. The graphics, gameplay, and sound are all fantastic.

My only recommendation is that you make the sound a bit louder. Right now, playing without headphones and with the volume as high as possible, it's a bit quiet still.

But other then that, this game is pretty close to perfect.

I don't know much about the technicalities of global scores, but how come some games don't require a log in at all? They just get posted to the in-game global leaderboards.

Well, thats the thing. Other games have only immediate score, but here you can play any level again and again to get the best score out of it and then submit. So thanks to your facebook account we know what score to update.

As I said in an earlier post, I think FB is an internet plague. The reason I mentioned anything is because not everyone has a FB account and they may not want to make one. I do like global leaderboards, so I guess I could just make a dummy account.

With you all the way. Then again, if people like the game enough to create a gaming dummy account... I probably would. I mean will!

PS: please as per previous post from Burton, check overall sound level and balance between sound effects and soundtrack (Love the soundtrack from video!). Just played a game where the soundtrack is hardly audible, and the sound effects so loud they become irritating, but sound effects should not be drowned either...

Not sure if the scoring / difficulty was changed for the second build, but whoa.. your scores are pretty high. I think maybe I spent too much time flying around, so my time scores are all pretty low. Hmmm... Not sure if the weights between the different kinds of scores are correct here. If I spend more time in order to find all the diamonds, is it worth it if my time score reduces by too much? I will need to play more to figure out how the balance works.

My scores are:
**Tutorial

Damage 8000
Diamonds 2500
Enemies 2000

**Uiff (1 try)
Time 2000
Damage 6800
Diamonds 10000

I'm at my fourth attempt at Maos. Its at this level that I finally realize you need some kind of strategy to pass a level: which enemies to get out of the way first, which order to attempt the objectives. I think this adds an interesting depth to the game.

OMG  I can't belive how good is this game. I'm highly disappointed by this limited beta build.. why? I want more! Want to play Blimp more and more! Awesome graphics, awesome sounds (yes, i'm using headphones :)), superiour presentation. Now I can't wait till a final release. 2,99$ - great price for this must have game.

Will post my scores later, going to play first 3 levels one more time now, love them

Overall, the game is very well executed. The controls are extremely comfortable and you don't get that constant "thumb pain" that we typical iphone/touch gamers have been forced to deal with. The visuals are incredible... i mean like they are oddly amazing. They captivate (if i had to choose a word to describe the feeling). The music is excellent, i love the original soundtrack, however I feel that the volume for the game overall good use a ramp up. Its pretty low. If it is literally "Made for Headphones" thats cool, however not everyone plays with headphones (i never do). As a player, I know I would rather have the volume at a Comfortable (louder) level than to have it too low. I almost have to tilt my head sideways to hear the ambiances. Anyway I won't harp, other notes... This is just an opinion but I feel that on the Comic Screens before each level, the "Word Bubble" which essentially isn't even a bubble, more like a black box, should be made to look more like a bubble. Not necessarily a "Word bubble" but obviously a frame that fits the theme for the game or each level. Black just is way too plain. I also feel that the graphics for the list of things we have to accomplish (i.e. 5x Workers 4x Boxes) are very 1989 retro graphics. I just feel that for the amount of time you put into the gorgeous landscapes that the simple stuff is too simple. Anyway I just feel that the graphics for these particular things should be much better and more "Today" rather than "Back then." Another thing I noticed (however maybe its because the volume is low and I'm playing without headphones) but I noticed that the Blimp has no sound when flying... Interesting since this is the central unit to the game... I think that there should be some noise involved when moving the blimp anywhere. When it crashes, maybe when it softly lands. Experiment, I'm sure you guys can get a good match up. I just think that those things should have sounds to help the players truly feel like everything they are doing is being effected and has an impact... and more sounds here would do that. If i'm mistaken on any of these points just yell 'em back. Thanks for reading!

About sounds, we decided not to bother player with too much sounds. In most games it's just pain to listen again and again to the same sounds. And in Blimp the main thing is definitely music. But we will consider that and try to upgrade sounds in update! (BTW there is a sound when u land and even when a client enters your blimp)

Have you tried to change sounds and music volume in options?

It happened to me too but it's an Apple O.S problem. Basically if you're device is on a flat surface it will happen. That's because the current O.S turns the accelerometer off.

flat as in laying on it's face or back?

or flat as in any direction as long as there isn't movement?

Mine was on a mini stand I rigged up to view movies. so it was still while loading but on it's side and at an angle

OK so I decided to write a small review of the beta. It's not 100% complete since I haven't played all levels but should give people an idea.

The story (as the game says) is that you are Captain Zed Pelin. You were in a war once, and you came out of it as Captain Zed Pelin. That is just the beginning of the story. You join a air transport company, and fight the enemies.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/picture.php?albumid=166&pictureid=853

The key-point of the game is it's polished. The devs obviously have spent time polishing this game. The visuals are stunning, and all match up well with the music and sound effects. There are 5 worlds I believe, for a total of 20 levels (though the beta has 7 :().

In most levels you are transporting workers and people from one place to the other. In later levels you still do this but are fighting with the enemy. And in some other levels you must fight the enemy.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/picture.php?albumid=166&pictureid=852

Thoughout the levels you must collect power-ups to improve your health and get more bombs to drop!!

Overall I think Blimp - The Flying Adventures is a great game with a lot of polish. Can't wait for it to come out so I can play all levels. :p

Oh and one more screenie:

http://forums.toucharcade.com/picture.php?albumid=166&pictureid=854

Anyways, just a short little review for the beta.

As far as the accelerometer issue. I've had that happen about 3 times in my limited playing of this game. I just quite the game and restarted and it was fine. I've never had this issue with any other accelerometer game. Can't nail down what exactly causes it though.

why would you wait to put the game out ? Apple must think your not serious. They probably put the game last to be put in the Appstore. Your game will probably be delayed for 2 days. You submitted the game, goes threw a long process, gets approved, then you set a date to be released, instead of just putting it directly for sale, delayed the game.
