Avatars - The Super Duper Serious Thread

We all know that TA has an awesome forum. We all hang out and love the forum for how addicting and easy it is to talk about our favorite thing, the iDevice. We have an awesome selection of boards, cool people, and just all around nice set up.

ONE major thing is missing.

I love the fact that our accounts all have profiles. Makes TA forums be a sort of Facebook/Myspace for iDevice Gamers.

The Profile Pages are really nice, well organized and just look cool and fun to look at. They are welcoming, if you will.

The ONE thing missing is Avatars. I hate have to look at my nice profile look to the right to look at my friends or somebody elses friends and just seeing a Box with a giant "?" inside of it. It bothers me because it hit my feeling of cleanliness in the profile pages. It just makes it feel like somethings missing and the page is incomplete.

There are two solutions to this problem.

1. Just activate avatars and let the site be complete.

2. Add a premium account method. Maybe like $5/year that gives us premium status, avatars, and maybe a few other ups. Would bring more money to the site than its already making and, would give ur avvys!!!

So now, Please, give us avatars one way or another.

But really, I do like the idea of avatars, but I also love the clean look of the forums without them, I'd tend to vote no for Avatars, or at least have the option to disable seeing them.

It would be cool if the avatars were preset then, jsut have a library of App Images you can choose from. Like your favortie App Icon

Well, although avatars and signatures(pics/CSS in the sig) are useless for some people, i find it useful.
On any forum, its useful, for friends(on the forum) so you can recognize them easier.
And for some people, its just a way of showing who you are, what you like(ex:the picture in the sig, or the avatar.
Anyways i'd say yes for the avatars.

It would be cool to have them someday. And they can always be optional if they annoy people.

At the same time, if I owned this site, they wouldn't be the first thing I'd devote time or bandwidth to.

Definitely would like to have avatars. It helps identify users much quicker and easier. Cap the image at 100x100 JPEG only if you don't want GIFs. Most people like amusing avatars anyways, so it would make this forum a more lively and interesting place. Also have a report system where bad avatars can be reported. I don't think this is too much to ask.

iirc every ipod forum i've been to doesn't allow sigs, which is pretty weird i think

Agreeing with Camzy, definitely no gifs. That'd would completely trash the clean look of the forums. I use to lurk in an old gaming forum a couple years back. You have no idea how fast pelvic-thrusting Startroopers and break-dancing teddy bears get old.

Why do you guys need a picture, or avatar to dress up. I don't care what picture you have. I can identify people just fine by there username. This isn't your myspace it's a games forum with the purpose of discussing games.

5$ a year for avatars. I think thats worth considering and if I still find myself here 2 months later(cant think of any reason I wouldn, but just in case) you can count me in.

How bout a real poll for this one. If TA sees that 20%+ users are willing to shell out 5 bucks a year just for hosting their avatars, they might consider it.

How do avatars work at MacRumors? I say, if that works well, go for it :)

I assume it's the same as signatures and posts: there are content guidelines. You don't have to get things pre-approved, but if you break a rule, a mod will probably catch you.

I didn't read through this thread, but if the reason we don't have avatars is to save bandwidth for this site, all you have to do is enable off-site linking.

I kind of thought the issue was server related but I didn't take into account moderation too.

Some forums do use a collection of preset avatars to keep the hit on the server to a minimum and also that solves the moderation issue.
