Well the times I've heard it takes to jailbreak range from 2 hours to 5 minutes. I'm wondering what program you can use that will be fastest and easiest?

Also how will things change when the 3.9 os is released? Will I be able to update to 3.0 and get all its features while remaining jailbroken?

Completely depends on which iDevice you have.

The first time I did it it took me several hours (figuring out what worked on my computer). The second time when I knew what I was doing it took me 10 minutes.

The fastest would be QuickPwn for now (or PwnageTool or something like that for Max).

You're jailbreaking the OS. So when 3.0 comes out you'll need to do that too (more like, you're gonna wait for someone to do that). Every version needs to be manually jailbroken before being distributed for other people to do the same. It's not a machine process. So basically what I'm saying is for every new version you'll need to wait for someone to jailbreak it and then distribute it before you can jailbreak yours again.

Doesn't quite take two hours for me, but not 10 minutes either

Do yourself a favor and make sure that you have a complete backup of your device. I found that Quickpwn is the best for me (iPhone 3G 16GB):)

Completely depends on which iDevice you have.

I have a iPod Touch 2nd gen, 2.2.1 firmware.

How does quickpwn work? I used quick freedom and I think it creates a whole new firmware and replaces the current one with the new one?
What does other software do that let it take only a few minutes?

I have a iPod Touch 2nd gen, 2.2.1 firmware.

Easy then. RedSn0w, without a question. Will take like 3 minutes. :)

All you have to do is put it in DFU mode and let the program do the rest. Really fast and doesn't require a restore.

Ditto.

Also, the re: backup, are you talking about copying the computer iTunes folder in a usual way or about something else? Can iTunes folder on computer get hosed on synchronization with jailbroken iTouch?

TIA.

I always use quickpwn. Works great, and it's really easy!

Umm too lazy to go look up what it stands for :p

But watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofpinyGlQ8I

That's how you put it into DFU mode. It's basically an override for the whole system for an "if all else fails". You can always put it into DFU mode and restore it.

It just happens that to jailbreak it, it needs to be in this mode.

Does redsn0w or quickpwn just mess around with a bunch of files or something while your iPod is in DFU mode?
Will it work with the 3.0 OS?

I don't know what it does exactly.

And no, the Dev-Team will have to release a new program or an updated version to work with 3.0 to jailbreak it.

Do you know what'll happen if we install the 3.0 with a jailbroken iPod?

It will just become an unjailbroken 3.0 device.

All our settings and music and app data will still be intact?
And when redsn0w or anything else gets updated we can just use that.

All that is saved on your back-up when you sync in itunes. After 3.0 is on your device, just sync and it can put the back-up on and all that data/settings will be put back on yes.

Yup when a new Redsn0w is released you should be able to jailbreak the same way. Assuming the Dev-Team can make it as easy as before.

OK, now I am confused. Is iTunes folder on PC by itself sufficient backup or do I need to back-up it too? Can badly jailbroken Touch hose PC iTunes content on synchronization?
Also, I once de-synched a game and when I re-synched it the saves were gone. Granted, it has been upgraded meanwhile, but how big are the chances of losing saves even with back-up if jailbreaking doesn't work?

TIA.

In iTunes go to preferences and then go to "devices", and you will see a list of the back-ups you have on your computer. I'm not sure where those are kept on the computer though. But every time you sync your device after plugging it in, it creates a new back-up.

No jailbreaking won't corrupt or destroy any computer files or back-ups. You can always resort to your back-up to put it back to the way it was.

Yes de-syncing a game off your device will lose that games saved data. Unless you restored from a back-up to a time you had that game on your device, you have lost that games data. But putting a back-up back onto your device will bring the saved game data with it.

0% chances that you will lose your saved data from a back-up if a jailbreak goes badly. At least, I've never had any issues and I've restored 10+ times.
Just be sure to sync your device and have it create a back-up right before you go to jailbreak so you have an up-to-date current back-up of your settings and data.

Thanks, that was very illuminating. If you don't mind my asking - why did you need to restore so many times? Just to upgrade the firmware or did jailbreak cause problems?

Your welcome.

I've had the original iphone, 3g iphone, and an ipod touch that I jailbroke each of them. A couple times I decided I didn't want to be jailbroken and unjailbroke it. And I've jailbroken a couple friends of my devices.

What's the best to jailbreak when using Vista? I tried doing it with QuickPwn two months ago, and nearly bricked my iTouch. I even installed the LibUSB thing

libusb did something strange with my computer (I have Vista too)
Whenever i tried to put my computer into standby or hibernation or shut it down I would get a blue screen of death and then it would reboot.
I got rid of libusb and it was fine.

Hi guys! I'm new here! I have a question about 3.0. So what I've been reading lately is that if you want a 3.0 jailbroken iPod you can't just download 3.0, you have to un-jailbreak your iPod, download 3.0 and wait for somebody to come out with a 3.0 jailbreak!:eek: Is this true?

Yeah 3.0 isn't jailbroken yet. Your going to have to wait until the Dev-Team or someone else releases a jailbreak for it.

Depends on your device. I used an iPod Touch 2g fw 2.2.1. I found a software for mac called Final Snow. Here's a quick tutorial if u want. 1) Put iPod into dfu mode (hold home and power for about 10 secs or when the screen goes blank then open the program and let it do its work.

Ok, can somebody please help me. I really hate when my iPod goes into safe mode automatically! It goes into safe mode for the craziest reasons One reason is if it taps the floor it will go into safe mode, if I'm downloading something on the computer, it will go into safe mode. Is there any way to make this stop? Because I really hate when it jumbles up all my icons and I have to re-arrange them. Oh, and by the way my iDevice is a iPod Touch 2G jailbroken on 2.2.1 software.

Quick question about redsn0w:
I was reading the Windows section of the readme and it recommends NOT to connect the iPod through a USB hub. I'm not sure what that means, doesn't it have to be connected through USB...?
Also do you get get Cydia when using this

I got redsn0w and it seems really easy to use, but how come the tutorials I searched for seem so complicated?

Isilel

So, I look around for info on RedSn0w and I am thoroughly confused. The version on the Dev's page is Beta 0.3, right? But at other places I have seen something like version 1.7 that dates from January or February (?!). Where is the most up-to-date version? Also, is it a tethered jailbreak or isn't it? I'd rather not have to connect to computer every time I want to restart.
If RedSn0w is tehered only, what other non-tehered Jailbreak programs would work for my iPod 2G?

I'd also love to find a good tutorial - all those I saw so far seemed horribly complicated.

Sorry for badgering you folks, but it is all quite confusing. Maybe somebody would share links for stuff they used for successful jailbreak? Please help a n00b. TIA.

In order for the K2 to remember your last page read, ensure that your wireless is on when you shut off the device. That is how the device syncs with Amazons site.

Let me know if this works for you.

I downloaded redsn0w and followed all instructions. I put it in DFU mode, then started redsn0w. Everything went they way it was supposed to, but when it got to the part where it restarts, it shows the apple logo for about 10 minutes, then the screen does a quick flicker of the screen, and does it again. For about an hour it did that, so then I put it back into DFU and re-tried the process. As I type its been an hour since second attempt. Please help.

I used quickpwn and the same thing happened to me, what you need to do(it worked for me at least :P ) is to delete all your apps, basically reset your ipod touch/iphone. Then jailbreak it with quickpwn/redsn0w/windpwn/...
Either ways, it should work.

I had this problem when I first jailbroke using QuickPWN, the process worked fine then it froze on the Apple logo upon rebooting.

Similar to what Aerodynamic suggested, I backed up, restored my phone to factory settings (ie wiped everything off), jailbroke successfully, then restored from the backup, which will reinstall everything while leaving your phone jailbroken.

For some reason it works better on devices that aren't full of apps etc.
