Not many Applications on the Iphone cause me to lose track of time completely. Defender Chronicles is one of them.
Defender Chronicles stands out from a veritable ocean of Tower Defense Games. Two strong variants, 2D Vertical and RPG Buildup combined with sharp professional quality graphics really help land this as a Gem.
The 2D Vertical gameplay is an interesting twist, I couldnt help thinking of Donkey Kong when I first saw it. I enjoyed this twist and it didnt feel like I was playing the same old TD game.
The RPG aspect on the other hand, really sold this game for me. You have a "Hero" guarding your exit. This hero gains experience and Tokens(gold) every time you battle win or lose(more if you win). So there is actually a reason to replay, and a reward for replaying!!!
You can choose to make your hero stronger in his own stats or stronger in his leadership categories which boost the troops you place on the map. The Tokens are used to purchase items in the game, again, both to make your hero stronger or to boost the troops or give them special abilities.
The game is not super easy, you wont win with spamming one tower type or X combo, but actually requires some thought even for the basic "Casual" level. however Veteran,(the 2nd Difficulty level) is very difficult without obtaining some item upgrades or leveling up your Hero. Further difficulty levels virtually require you to upgrade your hero's level and items significantly before you should remotely try attempting them. 4 difficulty levels in total
Unlockables are nice to see as well, new unlockables open up with each map defeated.
Stars, each map is rated with stars for your wins. You get 1 star for winning at casual level, an additional star for each of the difficulty levels, so the Heroic(4th) level grants 4 stars as a base. on top of the base, if you beat that map without selling any of your armories, you get another star, and if no enemies make it past you, you get another. so ultimately 6 stars is the best rating you can have per map, with a perfect score on heroic on all maps.... the difficulty in doing that is insane....but doable with leveling your hero(extensively) and finding(buying) legendary items.
6 maps, means variety, with promise of more to come in a free update including ability to play orcs instead of humans. I can safely say, this app has earned a place on my homescreen.
I highly encourage you to purchase this gem.
