Today I started a thread about today's release of the Sentinel 2 game. Prior to starting the thread I ran a search for any mention of the release from the TA homepage. (I have since clarified that the search feature on the site does not seem to include forum postings.) When nothing showed up I posted the thread only to be immediately jumped on by two people who indicated that similar threads already existed. Their comments and tone were derisive. Instead of offering some friendly suggestions on how to prevent duplicate posts they left comments that damage the sense of community that sites like TA are striving to create. I am a new user to the TA forums and only wanted to share some good news about an eagerly awaiting game. Incidents like this discourage participation in an otherwise great site. In short, people need to ease up and help newbies find their place in virtual community.

I agree with you and it's a problem we've had. Your best bet is to "report" the posts when someone is being unnecessarily rude. We have banned people in the past for this, and will continue to do so until the problem goes away.

Thanks for letting me know how to respond when this happens. I love the site and refer it to multiple times every day. Most of the time the forums are helpful and friendly and I want to make sure they remain so. TA is closest thing I know to a iPhone/iPod Touch gaming community and poor attitudes on the part of forum posters could ruin that good vibe. Thanks again for your help.

Thank you both jbletsch and arn. This is something that has always irked me. I never understood why people felt the need to be so rude. For some people, its as if its some sort of contest to see who can insult the OP in the most amusing way...
The thing is, its often the same people everytime. It seems certain members just lurk the forums for such reptitive threads, just waiting to flame the innocent new member. In fact, I bet I could guess exactly who jbletsch is talking about...*runs off to check*...confirmed

I think if new members were restricted from posting a new topic or thread, half of these problems would go away. Once they've been around the forums for a little bit and have replied to and participated in a few topics, etc. I think we'd see far less instances of posts in the wrong forums or even duplicate threads. This in turn would lead to less people "attacking" members for silly mistakes. An added bonus to this method would be less "spam" messages.

sounds good in theory.
Lately I've noticed that threads put in the wrong sections have been mostly started by senior members. It seems people just don't understand the difference between game RELEASE, and game DISCUSSION.
Oh yea, welcome to TA, JBLETSCH! I hope the rest of your stay here is more positive. There really are some awesome people on here. You sometimes have to weed through the rest though.

True, but that's because when a game is released....people want to discuss it! The only way to solve that would be to make it like the new review section where you can't reply to the release threads. But that would be silly and TA would just get even more fragmented.

Welcome to the forum jbletsch. Most members are actually pretty decent and willing to help if you have questions. I do agree though that the hosility irks me quite a bit, and I don't really understand the need for it. If you're doing it constantly, then I can understand the resentment, but if you're a new member just trying to find your way around here, then it's uncalled for.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your time around here.

Think of it as pledges going through initiation to join a fraternity :D
Nah, I'm just kidding. People shouldn't be harassed, especially if they're new. There's a difference between being sarcastic, and deliberately demeaning someone though. Like Arn mentioned, the best thing to do is report the post if you feel that someone is acting out of line.

What's up, jbletsch. Yeah, it happens. There was a period of time after christmas when a bunch of people got new iDevices, and there was a flood of new members on the forum. Unlike you, they couldn't type to save their life, and we got an avalanche of stupid threads like, " xxxxx is out! LOL" followed by, "dude, sah-weeeeet XDXDXD", and it got a lot of us... angry (understatement of the year for some ). People got sick of answering nicely and started flaming them. Now, at the time, that was partially good because it served as a filter. Those that got their feelings "hurt" and obviously didn't care about iphone gaming left and never returned. Those that did want to join our crowd did.
The problem is that this "filter" survived well after the avalanche ended, and then we have cases like this. The number of threads like this are so few that it really isn't necessary anymore, not that it really was to begin with.
My advice, just stick around and post in already running threads 'til you learn how it is around here. The more active you are, the more respect you earn, and you won't be just another "annoying n00b". Don't worry about it ;)

Thanks to everyone on this thread for helping me understand why some people get frustrated with duplicate threads, etc and for providing some ways to respond when other forum users say something out of line. I have spent a lot of time in recent months reading the forums and have noticed that most TA forum users are helpful and good natured. I guess that is why I was so surprised by the tone of the two comments made to the thread I started. I hope that we can make sure that such behavior stays the exception rather than the rule.
That said, I do have a question that will help prevent future duplicate threads. Is there a search feature to the forums? I assumed the search box on the homepage would include forum posts and when I searched for any mention of Sentinel 2 being out nothing showed up so I created a thread. If there is no search feature to the forums I will make sure to manually scan the forums for related threads before creating a new one. Thanks in advance for any help here.

yeah im sure I totally ruined your day by saying:
"3 THREADS DOWN, did you even look?"
it was so dang hostile, and mean spirited. i'm lucky I wasn't banned right there on the spot.
i could have said something mean like what are you stupid, or called him a name, but I didn't. I simply asked if he tried to look for the game. really stupid rule if you ask me. if you are going to enforce petty crap like this then I want everyone to have an infraction that responded to me with a wise ass comment. you can't enforce this one rule against one or two people and not the rest. load of crap.

Arn wrote this a couple months ago:
"There's been an ever greater rash of people posting just to correct people who have posted multiple threads or duplicate threads or if you think a thread is useless.
There are a few options.
1. If it's a duplicate thread or similar, you can kindly add a link to the other thread.
2. If someone has already added a link to the other thread. Simply move on. Don't post "I agree" or prolong the discussion
3. If it's just a really bad post, just report it, but don't reply to it.
These side conversations that emerge are cluttering things up as much as the off-topic or otherwise "bad" posts.
thanks

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction here. Somehow I missed this. I guess I get too caught up reading about the games and skipped right over the link at the top. Now that I know about this I can avoid generating duplicate posts.
A gentle redirection such as this was all that was required when I first posted. It is good because it helps generate a friendly tone to the forums and helps prevent the problem in the future by providing essential information.

Regarding the opening question - I've started to see the TA forums more as a resource of information about games (the most reliable information, that is), than as a community. Probably because of the amount of new members that I never got to know, but then again that's also because I haven't been purchasing enough games to be able to participate in the majority of the threads. ;)
Arn and the team set up some strict rules for the forums and if the users that DO know them report posts from people that DON'T know them, we can help the team out and contribute to forming a good community.
And thanks to Arn to responding to these kinds of questions within minutes.

It's unfortunate that certain people seem to derive pleasure from treating newbies in such a hostile and demeaning way, and that it is allowed to continue unchecked. The two members who responded so negatively to your original post are "newbies" themselves--they have only been members of the forum for 4 months. In that short time, they have each managed to amass 1000-2000 posts. Clearly--because they spend so much time in the forums--Touch Arcade is a huge part of their lives.
What they apparently fail to recognize, however, is that Touch Arcade is a privately-owned forum. People are permitted to post here at the discretion of the owner. People are banned at the discretion of the owner. No one has a right to post here. A forum should be a venue for discussion and debate; comments made for the sole purpose of making another person feel bad don't belong in the forum.
I was the 149th person to join these forums. Since then, an additional 18,000 people have joined. Naturally, since the volume of posts and the number of posters have increase exponentially, it's much more difficult to moderate the forum now than it was in the past. All in all, I think the moderators do a good job. I do believe, however, that the moderators are aware of which posters troll the forums looking for opportunities to criticize others, and should be a bit more proactive in reigning them in. No member should be reluctant to post because they fear a barrage of negative responses from certain posters.

I think that 9 posts a day is pretty average, if not below average when your talking about this forum, the fact that I choose to post more than once every couple of days means absolutely nothing, and has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of what you posted.

First of all, I totally agree with you about how pathetic it is how some people rack up hundreds of posts by bashing and flaming other members. That said, I'm sure that some of the moderators do a great job and make an effort to try to curtail the unnecessary sarcastic comments, but there is one that comes to mind that encourages this hostility. I'm not going to point fingers or say names but I'm sure that many people know who I'm talking about. There are also certain members that constantly flame newbies who I'm sure have never been spoken to. Maybe what we need is stricter rules that strike a balance between ending flaming and stopping useless posts while consequently creating a better environment for discussion. I'm sure this is very difficult to do but there can certainly be improvements. This has been brought up, but an automatic search that shows related threads before a new one is posted is a good solution. I don't care about "cluttering the boards" (because really, what does that mean anyway?) or double posts; I just hate seeing totally well-meaning people post their first threads and get thirty brutal responses saying that they did something terribly wrong. I really hope this gets reformed soon now that more attention is being given to the subject.

Again...while I agree that new members shouldn't be harassed....I also think that people should realize that this is an internet gaming forum. The target audience for these type of forums are generally not known for their sensitivity.
Not that I should have to defend jchampl or FilthyCanadien, but at the very worst all they did was add spam to the thread since they didn't post a link or provide assistance in a more helpful manner.
I'm going to assume that people that get this bent out of shape over some light sarcasm are a) older and more "mature" b) culturally different or c) lead a very sheltered life

i would have added a link to the thread if it wasn't three posts down, saying look 3 pots below "this" one, wasn't almost exactly like giving a link, as it was on the same page, links are more important when a post is made a page or so back and not sitting on the front page with around 18 posts in it already. and this isn't directed at your pharmx, i just wanted to respond to that as that seems to be something many people have said.

I understand. One of the reasons that I like this site is because we're usually able to express ourselves as long as we're not harassing anyone or being abusive. It just depends on where the line is drawn.
In this situation a thread was made by mistake, a couple of people commented on the mistake (albeit with sarcasm), and the thread was locked. Nothing more, nothing less.
I guess more than the situation itself, I'm just fascinated by how easily people get their feelings hurt.

If it were just an isolated incident, this thread would have ended pages ago. The fact that people are continuing to discuss it reflects that it is an ongoing problem; this incident is merely the most recent example.

I am perhaps more sensitive to sarcasm, etc because a) I am a little older than some gamers (i.e 40) and b) work in a profession that requires tact and diplomacy at all times. Specifically, I help lead a non-profit organization that requires the support and efforts of volunteers who do not respond well to sarcasm and unkind criticism. They also like being part of friendly "community" organized around common goals and interests. This does not mean that I lead a sheltered life. It only means I choose to work in and help create a different kind of work culture than some may have experienced. Consequently I may have transferred some of that to my expectation of the TA forums. While this is not the Disney forums (nor would I want them to be) being good natured and helpful towards fellow forum members (especially newbies) only makes sense. It encourages participation and helps new members learn the ropes faster. A newbie learns nothing when people only criticize their initial forays into the forum waters without helping point them in the right direction.
I will say that I have learned a lot from these forums about the great games out there for the iDevice and have learned a great deal from this particular thread. Thanks to everyone for their input here.

I think that the primary demographic of this forum has become 13-17 year-old boys, so it's not surprising that some of them act like...well...children. ;)
I do think this thread is beneficial in that it serves as a reminder that the forum is open to everyone who is interested in games and apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch...regardless of sex, age, culture, or any other irrelevant characteristic. What binds us together is that we all love games. Just try to be a little more patient with newbies--everyone was "new" once.
It would be nice to see the forum become more of a community and less of a dysfunctional family! :)

First of all, since I didn't do so earlier....hello and welcome to TA!
Now with respect to what you said about being good natured and helpful, etc....I completely agree with you. But you also have to realize that people are different. Some people are very polite and proper, while others are sarcastic and crass. Both types of people can be good at heart and have a lot to offer. All I was trying to point out in my earlier posts was that you need to have some thick skin when it comes to internet forums...especially a forum that caters to the gaming crowd.
I hope you didn't take what I said earlier as an attack on you....that wasn't my intention. I was merely suggesting that people express themselves differently, and that some people take a little bit longer to warm up to "newbies" than others.

jchampl and filthycanadian harass everyone-its like their thing. Sure it gets on my nerves every so often, and its a little old these days, but it wasn't a personal, ban worthy attack. I'm not saying that I think they should be off the hook for anything because of their "schtick" but I like to think of them like mean comedians, or accepted(even appreciated occasionally ) trolls.
For the community as a whole, I apologize, and I think this topic was handled very well.

haha I go on here way to much considering I remember that. He racked up like 200 posts in 36 hours if I remember correctly. I think that is a newbie record. Just checked his posts of him telling Filthy Canadian not to be so mean and start a Canadian gang. They were good times.
i was the first person that called him out, and he got mad when I accidently ;) called him loverboy haha

Who cares this is a gaming website and forum to find deals on iphone games, and the problem of spammers will never go away
and trolls are real idiots because they run around typing sentences on forums trying to piss people off, that is basically their life

i think that there's a certain degree of sarcasm, or harassing people, both jchampl and filthyCanadian have said some funny stuff, and sometimes they've said some rude stuff, but they both know when enough is enough, its just the way they are, but they also put a lot of input into other stuff, and they both know a lot about iphone gaming.i think that sometimes it would be good for a mod to warn someone when saying something sarcastic or along those lines, but i think banning should be saved for the people, personally attacking someone continuously.most of the time its just being being sarcastic, when your having an argument about something with someone, they should be allowed to, but should also take it to private messages, if the thread starts getting out of control with arguing i think that the people should just leave it alone, most of the veterans of the website are good about that, they know when enough is enough, its the sorta new people that come in and say a small comment or something that starts everyone off(everyone makes comments, just some know when to leave it alone when the time comes).the one big problem is people making new forums that already exist, and there are some rude comments made to the one who started the forum, but people have been getting better lately about using the search button. but like the rules say just simply post saying that there's a duplicate thread, leave a link, and then its all done.its a forum people are allowed to express there opinions, that's what its for, but they shouldn't be banned for it, just warned.

How about a thumbs up/thumbs down point system for all members? Then other posters (especially newbies) can tell if you are generally a helpful or not so helpful poster based on thumbs up points and thumbs down points.

I've been on a site that used that sort of system. Many members let everyone know that they would give thumbs up to people who gave thumbs up to them. Doesn't really work.
