4X4 Jam is the ultimate free roaming all-terrain racing game on the IPhone/IPod Touch to date.With complete freedom to go wherever you please and do whatever you want it really knocks the pants off anything seen so far.
It is from the same company Invictus that made 1nsane which in 2001 was named as Game of the year and Best off-road game ever on the PC and this is at the mo the little brother to that game tho will become it's big brother soon with promised updates to rival that great game.

Game Features
The game features high detailed 3D graphics with realistic off-road racing,3 difficulty levels with high score and best lap time records,also featuring 3 different game modes which are Off Road Race,Jam and Free Ride
Also vast terrains to free roam around at your hearts content,4 3D vehicles on screen during a race and the ability to choose a paint job for your chosen vehicle.
Your 2 vehicles which you can choose at the mo are a 4X4 Truck and a Beetle with 2 locations available at present which are Green Fields and Desert
You get to choose to race in the Off Road Race over a total of either 2,3,5 or 10 laps and in the Jam Race you get to choose between 5,10,15 or 20 gates and also how many opponents to race against up to a maximum of 3 at present.
There are 2 control methods also which are touch steering,auto accelerate,manual brake and also accelerometer steering,manual accelerate and manual brake.

Gamemodes
The Jam Race is a high-speed dash to race through a series of gates placed randomly on the terrain which show up as two sets of green smoke. A marker indicates the most direct route between the vehicle and the next gate.
You basically start the race with the indicator showing the distance and general direction of the gate and you then race to get to it before your opponents.When that gate is won it lets you know who's won it and then it's off to race to get to the next gate and so on till theres a winner who has won the required amount of gates,ie 5,10,15,20.
But as it's free roam it's up to you to decide where to go and how mad you wanna be by trying to shortcut over a big hill and that which sometimes pays off and sometimes leaves you in a big heap at the bottom but it's so much fun you don't care if you end in a heap.

The Off Road Race is a high-octane excitement for more traditional racing fans.But rocks, potholes, mud holes, trees and various objects make the route to victory harder than you could expect,and it's often better to be more of a daredevil trying to find the shortcuts which will give you the edge to succeed and win.
Basically in this mode it's more of a conventinal race in which you try to get to the finish in first place.To do this you have to navigate your way through either 2,3,5 or 10 laps against 1,2 or 3 opponents.
The gates which you have to go through are indicated with two green clouds.There is a loose track that you can follow but you dont have to stay on it or follow it as it's free roam so go wild and and find your own way round.Same as in the Jam mode you get an indicator which shows the direction of the next gate.

In Free Ride you basically explore the terrain and put your vehicle to the test. Ride across the terrain just for fun and mash it up and go wherever you like to get the lay of the land.
Plenty of crashes to be had here as you try and make it up those steep hills and mash it up over the terrain.Lots of fun.
Game Pros
Free roaming,Free roaming,Free roaming. Did i mention the Free roaming.For those that are fed up with many on-rail racing games out at the mo this offers summit different and it totally blows them outta the water.
This is at mo a basic version of 1Nsane but many updates to follow with more terrains,vehicles,opponents,maps and more this will turn out like 1Nsane but for the IPhone/IPod touch.
Graphics and controls are spot on with endless replayability that loses you for hours at a time.

Game Cons
Only cons at the mo is that it's a basic version of 1Nsane with only 2 terrains,2 vehicles,no damage to vehicle or multiplayer but with updates to follow to correct this then this will be the ultimate Free roaming racing game,even tho imho it is now.

Overall
This is the ultimate Free roaming all terrain racing game on the IPhone to date which knocks the spots off everything out at the mo.
Ok it may seem a little bare at the mo and with no multiplayer,2 terrains,etc but with the promised updates to follow it's well worth splashing the cash as it is now and you will not regret it as it really is the bee's knee's.
I'm gonna give this game the maximum 5 outta 5 even without the updates cos it really is that great and the free roaming is what stands this apart from the rest.With the updates coming i would amp this up if it was outta 10 to 11 as any Spinal Tap fans would appreciate.This game is gonna blow you away with it's free roaming and the updates are so gonna blow the rest of the on-rail games away into a puff of 4x4 jam's exhaust fumes.
