Wow! This game rocks! I love the simple retro style and challenging gameplay. It reminds me of all those Spectrum/CPC games I used to play as a kid, where I'd boot the game up and die... and die... and die... and finally completing the first level was a huge success and cause for celebration. This game isn't quite as difficult as those, but it definitely requires practise and some level repetition.

There's only one thing I'm not too keen on, but it's only a tiny thing... I prefer icons when they're the default square shape. Have the light grey squares showing up behind the ship and it'd look awesome in my opinion.

I would gladly have paid for this app if I hadn't won a promo, so any other retro fans reading this should be putting it into serious consideration.

Love the game! I hope you do more games in this modernized-retro style because they're quite the rage among us nerds :)

Edit: I should add that this is what I just posted on the app store, I've only been playing it 5 minutes but I already consider it a 5-star app :D

Of course.

A white icon means you've unlocked that level and is now ready for play. When the icon is green it means you've completed that level. When it's yellow, it means you've completed the level almost perfectly. :)

The black ones are to be unlocked.

I would like a code because yesterday i was sitting on my couch, eating potato chips. Then something very exciting happened. I accidentally knocked my potato chips off the couch! They spilled all over the floor! As i got up off of the couch to pick them up, i crunched some under my feet. After if inished cleaning up, i took my chip covered socks off, squeezed the grease out, and donated the grease to McDonalds so that they could keep making theyr'e lovely fries. Apparently they wee so happy, they gave me a free kids meal toy in exchange! This is why i NEED a promo code for this game. Its sad because i find this as an exciting adventure.

One of reasons I enjoying game so much as an adult is the great rush of memories I get from my childhood. My first system was Pong in the 70's. So, yes... I'm an old guy! Not really.... only 45. So, I have many memories of different systems and games over a four decade timeline.

Maybe because I loved the 8o's... ya know Flock of Seagulls, Human League, Generation X, the Ramones, and DEVO, Bruce, crazy hair, and zipper pants, I love the games from then. I think it's for this reason that I gravitate to retro games on all my systems and the iPhone is no exception.

I also love sharing the music I listened to and the type of games I played with my 16 year old boy. Of course, until recently, he hated all of the music. Now, all of the sudden, Bob Marley and the Wailers, the Stones, and the Clash among many others are cool. He had a hard time relating to retro games as well as all of his gaming memories are from XBOX and PS2 and later but appreciates them and their importance in have shaped gaming of today.

Lunarcy looks like a fun, well made game that's sure to bring me back to great times and give me another opportunity to share an "old school" game with my son. LOL.

Thanks for contest and good luck with Lunarcy.

MidianGTX
08-10-2009, 02:39 PM
Yeah I'll admit it was more of a short burst of happiness rather than a professional review... I like to keep 'em short and sweet for iTunes.

Anyway, a big draw of the game for me is the nostalgia, so if you've never played games on the Spectrum/Amstrad/Amiga or stuff like that then it may not have the same appeal.

Basically you're the little green ship, and the blue coloured ones are docks orbiting the planet. All you have to do is fly up, connect with the dock (or each dock if there are several) then land safely back on the planet. It's made quite a bit more difficult than it sounds by the extremely limited fuel... holding the thrust for about *goes to time it*... 2.5 seconds is enough to empty the whole tank and fail the mission.

To combat this, you need to use the planets gravity to your advantage, tap the thrust very quickly and use micro touches on the direction buttons/thrust to get yourself into orbit. Once you're there you'll be rotating around the planet without using any fuel. Then you need to continue with the "micro taps" (the random phrase I just invented for really quick touches) to line yourself up with the dock and connect. Then it's just a case of separating yourself from the dock and landing back on the planet. When you have multiple docks you can land back on the planet between docking to refuel, but it costs precious points. Level variation is mainly things like number of docks, their distance, speed, whether or not they rotate as they orbit and so on.

Surprisingly, the music is awesome. It only starts once you lift off but it's got a real "retro-mini-space-adventure" kinda feel to it, and if your fuel gets low it changes to a much more tense track which is pretty exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time.

Other than that, there's really not all that much more to the gameplay. It is very simple, but it's beautifully done and feels really polished.

I can't think of much else to say (headache ) but I could have a go at making a short video of the gameplay unless someone else can find one.

Processing right now. Apologies in advance for only showing the simplest levels but it's damn hard trying to play when your tripod consists of a stack of dvds and a phone case.

The final level in the video just requires you to get into perfect orbit, you have to hit all of the stars without touching the controls. You get to hear the panic music a bit too :)

Oh, and the video is in portait view since... that's the shape of the iPod.

Done:
xwbppyqh8QA

As I said it's a simple game, but it's really quite charming and requires some good old-school gaming practice if you wanna hit the big points.

First off, wow!

Second, thanks for the promo code - after seeing the information about this game, I would have bought it if I hadn't made the 2nd round of codes... :)

I have to say I like everything about this game - music, sound, layout is great. The controls are easy, but learning how to play this game properly is not. (A good thing, IMHO). Be prepared to use very little bursts of thrust. In fact I think this game would have worked well with a 2x slowdown mode, allowing for "more" thrust to be used before you go spinning off into space... (I think things actually get a tad easier with planets that have more gravity.)

This game is much more like what I was expecting out of GraviTicks - a game where you have limited fuel, and have to take advantage of gravity as in real life, kinda like the old board game TriPlanetary (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3637).

There are some nice touches, like how the music really kicks in once you're off the planet.

Well, that's my impressions after a few levels - I'll be back after I get some more game play in. ;)

Not sure if the time is GMT or what -

I am interested in Lunarcy for 3 reasons -

1 - I am interested in retro type games, since that is the era I grew up in playing those types of games. This is being described, and appear in the video to be of that type of game.

2 - The music is described as being something special, and as a musician - I always appreciate when the music / sound effects are highly involved with, and improving the experience

3. From the video - it appears to require a fine touch, and patience to play the game, and improve. Games that are quickly mastered lose their appeal. Gaming is in the challenge of continuation.

Thanks for your regard.

Man, I really want to play this game. I was about to post in the contest last night and talk about it, but then I saw it was 11:59AM and not PM!

But now it seems like there's another chance, so here goes:

I love the idea of unique games. I'm tired of shooters and castle/tower defense, and I think the iTouch devices are really a place where creative developers can make an impact- mostly because of the setup of the app store- even though it has plenty of flaws, it has definitely leveled the playing field in some ways. So I like the idea of going off the beaten path to find new gaming experiences, and this looks like it will be a good one.

One of the first computer games I ever played was called 'Galaxy Lander', I think it was in BASIC on the Ti-99/4A (showing some serious age here!)- it was a classic lunar lander type game, thrust and steer to gently touch your lander down on different planetary surfaces- each with different gravity levels, so they all played a little differently. Totally skill based and pretty touchy. It was all too easy and frustrating to die, but still really fun- it made a big impression on me.

This game seems like it has finally taken the next step beyond the lunar lander games, keeping the elements of space and gravity intact, but totally taking the gameplay to the next level. I never really enjoyed the lunar lander variants that were about shooting enemies while trying to land- it sort of seemed like it was straying from the gameplay that made the original so cool. This game seems like it really does take the spirit of those old games and add something totally new- interacting with (and maybe even using?) a gravitational field while performing tasks instead of simply controlling a descent directly opposite gravity. So I am pretty excited about the game, and would love to try it out.

Back to the topic: I really wish it was easier to record video on the iPod Touch, I've had some epic failures that I'd love to watch again and/or share with the rest of the world, as well as a few miracles. Would it be feasible to add a replay/ save replay option to this game?

That's actually a very neat idea! We're discussing the possibilities right now. Lunarcy 1.0.1 is already near, so that'll be a 1.1.0.

But a replay / save is definitely worth looking into!

If we're talking about updates, I'd like a level pack where the objective is to get from one planet to another, and along the way you have to dock at the docking stations to refuel. Probably make them a different colour just to make it obvious they're refuelling docks.

I can dock quite easily too, but how much health are you losing when you dock? It's seriously hard to keep that number high. Landing I can do without much damage, but I end up wasting too much fuel instead.

Must be possible since the FABRIK claims to have yellow icons for all levels, so I'm just putting it down to me not being good enough rather than the game being too hard. He did say those were pro scores.

To land, I try and get into a slow orbit, then travel in reverse and tap the thrust to gradually slow my orbit speed down, which then slowly pulls me closer to the planet. Rotate to the right angle just before you touch down and presto.

Yes, the different planets thing we were already thinking about. Nice idea indeedl. The different docking stations we hadn't thought about thus far, but I can think of several fun implementation.

When talking about a level pack, would you like the idea of different downloadable level packs?

I think the nicest way would be to have a screen where you can select "Original levels", "Level Pack 1", "Level Pack 2" and so on, and each pack would be a different theme. So pack 1 could include the refueling docks and pack 2 would introduce a new gameplay element.

Themes would be an option. How about difficulty packs? An "extreme pro" pack for example?

I think I'll have to play more of the current levels to see if I could stand it getting any harder than this :p At the moment, I'm finding it easy enough to complete the levels, but very difficult getting the "yellow icons". So if you did an "extreme pro" pack I would like it if actually completing the level was harder and not just hard by getting insane scores.

We believe we designed the level exactly like you described them. We also believe that the current levels are challenging, especially the last 10 or so. But that's for you to decide. :)

We're very curious about how challenging you find it to complete all levels. Please let us know once you completed the game! :)

An yes, the yellow badges are pro scores.

Sometimes I have trouble releasing myself from the dock, is there a reason for it or is that a bug? Maybe the touch area is too small? I just had to tap it about 4 times before it let go of me.

There are no known bugs with the docking and undocking sequences. So we believe this has indeed something to do with the touch area. If you find that the area is a tad too small we can easily enlargen it. Is this an annoying / frequent problem?

We added this at the todo list for Lunarcy 1.0.1. We're trying hard to update as soon as possible. Thanks for the tips!

Yeah I think maybe 40-50% of the time I have to press at least twice. I've got pretty small fingers so maybe I'm just not being careful enough. I just started double tapping them to make sure it worked.

Noted. This will be solved in 1.0.1 :)

Wow! That is an awesome idea! Trippy and nausiating nontheless. :P But I personally really like that! Perhaps for some bonus levels, or as an optional view mode?

We - just as the previous ideas - are definitely looking into an implementation for this! Will probably be a 1.1.0.

My collegue is showing off his OpenGL skills as we speak. :P

Thanks drelbs!

I'd vote for an optional view mode. Would be cool if you could watch replays in either mode...
