Well, it depends on your purpose... so here's the advantages to my 2 favorite free ones.

Pick:

- Twitfire if your focus is super-quick posting. Nice interface, but lacking features like viewing tweets from contacts, @replies, etc. Great for things like live-blogs if you're posting one after another. I know this for a fact :D

- Twitterrific if you want a feature-rich app with a great interface. Does pretty much anything you want from it, and then some.

My Twitter is twitter.com/chasetastic if you ever get one and want to add me. :)

Really? Well even Twinkle is better than that which has a really nice interface. Takes a minute to load your contacts' tweets the first time around, but after that it's quick. I used it quite a bit before I got more involved in Twitter and I really enjoyed it. It's a really great looking app. Cool sound effects, too :D

Yeah, that's what I used it for, too. But that's cool. Your choice. :D

It's also fun to use it to see who's Twittering around you. I was surprised how many people were Twittering within a mile of me!

I'm not a serious Twitter user, but I like Twinkle. It gets the job done. I mostly just like to hear news from developers and some people from YouTube.

If you're not a serious Twitter-er like me, I think Twinkle is fantastic, especially because it's free :)

Here's my picks -

#1 - Tweetie - using this most now because it allows multiple accounts and has a bunch of great features i use (search with ability to save for one). Will cost you a couple bucks so if you're looking for a free app then #2...

#2 - Twitterfon - very clean, easy access to your @, DM. Post to twitpic

#3 - Twinkle (runner-up) - I like this app and turning the phone into landscape and seeing tweets pop up is brilliant. The only reason this isn't my main app is because it doesn't feel like it's main purpose is Twitter. Many of the features I personally need aren't here, but this is still a solid choice too.

That's my 2

TwitterFon is the best for me. Twinkle is too bloated with the sounds and localized thing.
TwitterFon has the cleanest interface, the smoothest scrolling, it's free and has a nice icon! :D

I tested Twinkle and Twitterfon now and while I didn't care for Twinkle (like Gregz0r says, it feels bloated) I love Twitterfon, its much better than Twitterrific.

I also would like to know what makes Tweetie so special? What functions does it have that other free Twitterclients don't?

Ok, you guys got me started on looking for a new Twitter app. I've tested Twinkle, Twitterfon, Twitterific and Twittelator.

So far my top favorites are Twittelator and Twitterfon.

I'm thinking about getting Twittelator pro or whatever for $5 but I could possibly get Tweetie for $3 since I have heard lots of great things about it. Does anyone have Twittelator Pro that could tell me if it's worth it?

Thanks

And as for the original question, Tweetie is by far the best. Twitterific has the better design, in my opinion, but Tweetie has a much more functional feature set. And with the latest update to Tweetie, there is a “simple” theme that is much better. It goes a long way towards matching even Twitterific in design.

With Tweetie, you can have multiple accounts. You can search for any term that you want, and you can view trends that are currently occurring on twitter across the public timeline. You can limit your results to direct messages, and you can even search for tweets that are geographically close to you.

Another great feature that I enjoy with Tweetie is that you can view that original tweet that someone’s @response is a reply to. And when you follow this, you can view the other persons recent messages, their profile, and you can see the people that they follow. You can also manage your account, on a rudimentary level, by following and unfollowing people. It also scrolls like butter.

If you are a casual user, or are just dabbling in twitter, you’ll probably be fine with one of the free alternatives. But if you are serious about twitter, and follow more than a dozen people, you can’t go wrong with Tweetie.

(I sound like a commercial.)

Excellent post here. I'd also add it's the quickest Twitter app in all regards of it's functionality.

The only issue that I have with it (albeit minor) is that you have to manually refresh the tweets - there is no way to automatically display new tweets as they're sent. In all fairness, I don't think that most of the clients do this (for some reason Twinkle does).

I use Tweetie and am very happy with it. Definitely worth the few bucks if you are planning on using Twitter on a regular basis.

I'd say you sound more like an evangelist than a commercial :)

I use Twitterfon.

I was a long-time Twinkle user since iPhone OS 1.1.4, but I got tired of the lack of updates, the unknown-server-errors and the bugs in their functions (block still does not work, you can still get private messages from people, you don't follow, twitter/tapulous-bridge is still unreliable etc. etc.). Since I hate Twitteriffic I took a look on other apps and then found Twitterfon. It's great. It's free. It has a self-filling address book, an interface wich is optimized for few taps and even a location based search and full-text search.

The dev brings out updates very fast, responds to EVERY tweet and you have access to their ticket system and roadmaps.

Ok, just to sort of summarize this thread, most people say this:

Best paid Twitter app: Tweetie

Best free Twitter app: Twitterfon

PS I love both of them. Twitterfon is easily the best free one and Tweetie is the best especially at it's low price of $3.

Twinkles greatest feature is the nearby view. But you can't really compare twinkle to other twitter clients - it is no twitter client.

Flowbee
12-19-2008, 01:43 AM
Twinkles greatest feature is the nearby view.

Tweetie has the 'Nearby' view, too.

Oliver
12-20-2008, 02:51 AM
No twitter client has a nearby search similar to twinkle because twitter does not save this information. What the twitter clients offer is a search for tweets written by persons near you. Twinkle displays the tweets written near you. That means, that in twinkle each tweet has the information saved where it was written, where in twitter this information is missing and all tweets show up at the location which is set in the twitter profile.

Tweetie if you're actually using Twitter for anything else.

jpxdude

+1 for Twinkle

The Nearby feature is more of a dual function, and doesn't interfer with the Twitter portion as is implied above, it just links you also to the Tapulous server which only picks up nearby Twinkle 'tweets'.

It works reliably for me to keep up with my regular Twitter tweet feeds, as well as reading random tweets from other Twinkle users closeby.

Oliver
03-24-2009, 04:38 AM
Please, do not mention Twinkle in a thread for Twitter clients. Twinkle is no Twitter client. It's a client for the Tapulous network. and the Tapulous network *tries* to sync itself to the Twitter network. When I say it tries it, I mean it fails with doing so. I used Twinkle on the 1.1.4 firmware (jailbroken) and now the bought version of the AppStore for months and then had enough. They are often out of sync with Twitter. You not only have the Twitter outages, but also the Tapulous outages. And you have some people who are only on the Tapulous network and not on Twitter. And when you have people on Twitter with the same name as OTHER people on the Tapulous network, the chaos is perfect. The block functionality is still broken and always forgets people which I blocked and there I could go on and on and on. It just sucks.

So, to come to a conclusion, Twinkle is no Twitter client, the Tapulous network tries to stay in sync with Twitter, which fails due to a number of obvious reasons, the software is buggy and gets very few updates.

Don't misunderstand me: I want to like Twinkle and used it for months, but Tapulous broke it, both with the software on your iPhone and with the software running on their servers.

Most other real Twitter clients also offer something similar to nearby based on the Twitter search. Due to Twitter not saving the location with tweets but in your profile (and therefore, all tweets are matched to this one location), this is something different than what Twinkle does, but it works most of the time. TwitterFon for example makes use of this location based search with autoupdates etc. in an outstanding form.

Edit: And there's also a new app called Lounge. They offer a Mac and iPhone client and plan to sync between both of them. The iPhone client feels a bit clunky, but they offer great features and integrate the search stuff like no other client does. The Mac client is better though.
