The best way to speed up the development of the expansion pack is to buy the main game on release. Keep in mind that Crescent Moon is a small independent studio and that they've already invested (I assume) and huge amount of staff-hours to produce a game of this magnitude. Buying the game as soon as it's available will help to get it up on the charts and make it visible in a crowded marketplace.

Yes! I couldn't agree with you more! The more copies that sell, the better experience we (as gamers) will have in the end becuase the game developers will have the necessary income to keep the ball rolling with future expansions.
And yes, I know that this is my first post, but I've been following this game since it was first mentioned on Touch Arcade! I just figured that I'd finally take the time to chime in.

i just watched the trailer on youtube, and noticed the comment about it being about 7-8 hours long, and then the trailer just happened to mention the game being 'epic'.
nothing against the quality of the game, but i would hardly call that epic. might be large in scope/size, but that doesn't make it epic.
most of the elder scroll games were epic, as were the nwn series probably, hopefully dragonage will be as well.
maybe its just me, but if you can sit down and finish a game during the normal course of a business day, its not epic.

Hell yeah Stealin horses
And I want a forest, with scary curling trees maybe a wizard will live there and his powers of evil are rotting away the forest. And then when you slay him it becomes a peaceful and nice forest (the trees should talk or send messages through birds, the birds are thier voices and the owls will act as thier eyes)
I have more ideas but now my mind is exhausted beyond all human endurance.

Yeah you can't judge a game, let alone many things based on it's length (unless you are a girl). I beat Braid in one normal day and that was epic. The song "Im on a boat" is barely 3 minutes long and it's epic. I read "a day in the life of ivan denisovich" in a day and that was epic. The world's longest breath hold is only 16 minutes 32 seconds set by Peter Colat and that was epic.
WOOO!!! GTA (Grand Theft Animal)!!!
Yeah, stealing horses is good.
But I'm guessing that there will be no beastiality :(

This is true. We need cash quickly, or we're going down in flames. We've risked everything for this... didn't start out that way, but a little at a time we got drawn further in. If there's money coming in, we'll be all over the expansion pack, and we're going to be coming here to ask you all what should be in it. The sooner we have the cash to pay people, the sooner we'll get started.
If not, we'll be moving into a 1979 Econonline van down by the river, living on berries and catfish and learning the banjo, and you, gentle gamers, will be left to the tender mercies of megacorps, who will TELL YOU what you want, and have their army of thralls crank it out, whips cracking over their shoulders as they weep into their keyboards at their sorry fate.
Buy it! Buy two! Get your gramma to buy it! Get your aunts and uncles and cousins to buy it! Shame jailbreakers into buying it! Strike a blow for freedom from the corporate behemoths!

but when do you think the expansion will be out, I'll probably buy it as it is released but not play it until expansion is released. (I like a full game, not a partial one, character customization pretty crucial to me)

Yeah, but you miss 95% of the game doing just the main quest.
And I agree 7-8 hours for an iPhone game is pretty sweet, especially considering the price tag on apps.

It's because we don't have an army of non-gamer suits taking the profits and crushing the life out of us. Creativity can't survive in a sweatshop.
As for the stability of older iPods, my wife played through on my first gen with no crashes, and I think she spent about 12 hours on it, as she likes to wander about and look at things.

Ok guys I hate to say this but I have to now. The game is getting a big controls overhaul. The publisher and some other very important people (VIPs)
have brought this up. We were so used to the controls and satisfied with them (and even the beta testers didn't seem to mind them) but when we put it in front of the big wigs, they seemed to think that it needed change, and should be consistent with the other top games out there. It will be getting auto-targeting as well.
This may set the submission back a week.
Its lucky on the website it says "Coming this Fall" If we are lucky - Apple's approval times have been faster lately so it may still actually come out at the same time.
On a happy note - I don't think it will delay it too much, because Russ is the KING of programming (IMHO)
there are other optimizations that are being done as well.
So sit tight, and there will be some vids to watch to make you drool some more.
What were the controls before and after, hopefully neither scheme involved tilting to move and shaking to swing your sword... ;)

Josh asked us beta testers to stay mum about the game, so I won't give away anything specific. But I'm sure he won't mind if I say this:
1) the game is finished (meaning that we were able to play it from beginning to end); what Josh is talking about here are tweaks.
2) Josh is not kidding when he says that Russ is the king of programming. When you finally get to see Ravensword, you won't believe that it was coded by one person (and developed by a two-man team). If the changes can humanly be made before their self-imposed deadline, they will be.
3) Those Imps and Goblins are indeed very sneaky.

If it was JoshCM who made the video, I think it's an iPhone 3GS. But the game runs fine on an iPod touch 2G, too! ;)

Thanks!
I had helpers along the way with the characters and animations, so while the core team is 2 people there are others that helped us out on that front.
The programming I think is the most impressive thing - it truly is programmed by one person!!
Well, you all (team) should be proud (I'm sure you are :) )
I do not recall any other team (with big publishers behind or indie) making something like this on the iPhone (I mean...not only graphically, but the scope and all the rest)...
I really hope the game is great like it seems to be and you gather the success you deserve.
I applaude at the (probably really hard) decision to eventually delay the game to have the control perfect on this one.
So and so control could potentially kill what seems a great effort, even bigger considering you're only 2.
The (only one) coder is really the king of coders tough.
IT'S A FREAKING PHONE!!!!!!

You don't have to like everything about something to be impressed by it. I would say that the movements are no stranger than what you would find in a game like Morrowind (or even the far more recent Oblivion).

I would like to add something after watching the video again (and again) now that I can crank up volume at work.
The sounds are even more impressive.
Good ambience combat music, nice bird chirps in the forest, wind....
I hope it's not TOO combat heavy (and 'jumpy'), I would love to get 'lost' in the game visually and aurally, discovering the world and 'living' a good story.

That vid was very nice. Elemental attacks with weapons large enemies and large areas. Though the write up said a lot of the control was changing? Would that be as in adding a magic button or something  I know you said magic has been redone for the game as it was just runes before.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but you should look into Sandstorm's control scheme whereby moving your finger along the screen it causes your view to pan around. That way when fighting you can target monsters much easier.
Although auto-target that causes the monster you're fighting to always be in view would also definitely help

I think the MC:S control scheme is great for an FPS, but I'm not sure it it's the best way to approach an RPG -- even an action one. We'll see what these guys come up with.

Well I'm not talking about the entire control scheme, just the using your finger to look around part.
Actually Seven Swords uses a similar scheme, and it works extremely effectively.
So yea they should look at how Sevenswords did it.

I was referring to the same thing -- but I'd forgotten about Seven Swords. My main concern is having my finger get in your way of the often-gorgeous environments. But perhaps it could work (though, at this point, I would expect such a change/option on a later update).

Well as the first to bring on the old Lego with uncomfortable diapers man animation, this is much improved and actually looks good now. Obviously it isn't Backbreaker quality but it doesn't look horridly awkward, and actually looks representative of animation in similar games like Oblivion. I trust this has been applied to all creatures including that polar bear.
The jump arc looks fine when fighting the monster, but REALLY ODD when leaping over the rocks in the lava. The 1st jump looks like a really short hop and suddenly he's across.
-------------
One thing I see that might need work, the controls. I understand that you and your beta crew have no problem running up and attacking the enemy without getting disoriented or missing, but that's because you guys after a while have learn to watch the position of the enemy from afar a start lining up when you are running up to him so when you catch up you're never off kilter. It's like the one analog stick back in the PS1 days.
However casuals who are going to play this now and again for 10 mins, quit, forget and play again need, as well as impatient RPG folk like me, are going to want quick targeting from jump. It also helps in those odd moments when we didn't line up right: we want to simply turn to our oppoent and keep hacking away instead of backing up, lining up again drama.
Two things then:
One, take Gameloft's "swipe screen to look around camera". It is by far the most effecting way to controling character movement that isn't in a top down game. This isn't a RPG vs FPS vs action game thing, or a "battle of developer philosophies". It's using common sense to incorporate a control scheme that's PROVEN to sucessfully give iPhone game the feeling of control that dual sticks gives regular consoles. I'm a big proponent with this.
2nd of course would be the auto-aim. Keeps you locked on to the character . Trickier than the first method if two enemies are attacking at the same time, but can be done.
So yeah, do both.

Wow - Arta - coming from you thats a very nice compliment.
We've definitely done a lot more work on the animations. The jump is actually a factor of the blending between segments of animations, not the actual jump animation itself. We've had a tricky time with the motion blending - that in itself would have warranted another programmer just to handle the character's movements in the game. If we make some money on this first release, we'd probably be able to pay people to specialize in certain areas, rather than doing everything by ourselves.

Actually, arta, now that I think about it, you are probably right -- the MC:S control scheme is likely a best-practice now for 3d character control. There were some advantages to what Josh and Russ came up with, but it certainly was not as natural as swiping the screen.
The auto-aim was something that came up pretty quickly from the beta-testers (well, at least from me) and I think that they intended to add that even before they started revising the overall control system.

I don't know...from the trailer on the front page, the actions of the character seems a bit off. His attacks are too short (always being a quick jab or a quick side swipe), and he jumps too high. That's all I was able to gleam from the trailer alone.
JoshCM
10-09-2009, 03:06 PM
I probably should have mentioned - this video shows the character at a very high level, with the most powerful sword and agility which makes him able to jump higher than normal (useful for some areas that require very long jumps to stay out of Lava and other obstacles)

reinhart, please do me a favor. Find a console game that you think has great character animation. Now go check out the credits: tell me how many people were involved in doing said character's animation. Now think about the number of programmers involved in the entire Ravensword project (one). Hopefully that will clear things up for you. :)

Indeed. It's the control of dual sticks without having a second analog display taking up space on the screen, and it's proven in several genres. You guys really need to use that method, in addition to your own.

No strafing and no character customization... This is shapijg up bad, without the ability to walk sideways and aim at the enemy that means we will have to back up and readjust aim everytime we are in a fight. That annoys me, especially on a game like this, where your main thing is exploration and fighting, i wanna be able to see the forest on the right not turn to it, and then turn back just to walk on the path. That was one of the things i liked about elder scrolls two and up, the ability to strafe. Made it so much easier to explore, see, lets say theres a huge open area, i wanted to look to my left and right to make sure there wasnt any enemies, but i also want to keep walking on my path as there is a dungeon ahead of me, with this games control scheme i woukd have to stop, turn left, then right, then go on my path again. To me, thats annoying.

Or if they want to get really nuanced with it, they can allow you to use the analog stick to turn slightly left or right while running like in their video, but if you tap hard left or hard right you will strafe.
Swiping the screen with the right thumb moves the camera just like Gameloft.
Or of course try auto-targeting.

I think you are right about BIA, but Arta's point still holds: it's a good technique that has proven to work in a number of games from different publishers. In other words, a best-practice, available to anyone making a game that involves navigating a character in a 3D environment with a dynamic camera.

I just wish developers didn't feel the need to lock a 'virtual stick' graphic in the interface. They look ugly and take up valuable screen real estate. I would prefer if you could just drop your thumb on the screen and that would become the active control area. It does sound like MC/ Nova's control scheme. The addition of swiping with TWO fingers to make a quick 180 RE4 style is actually a brilliant idea.
I wonder why it's needed, since games like RE4 and Halo/ Nova have enemies that could suddenly be flanking you, while here I've only seen one slow beast at a time. Maybe you get trapped in a maze with two enemies? I dunno, great idea nonetheless.

I don't care how long the game is delayed. It would stink if it were released with a killer bug in it. Yeah my interest would fade if we were still waiting for the game's release this time next year, but wouldn't that interest be rekindled if it turned out to be a fantastic game? I don't want this game to be the Two Worlds of the iPhone.

You act like they delay the game to hurt you. They delay games to make sure they are perfect before release. especially with apples approval process. Other companies watched what happened to minigore at first. Rushing to bring out updates just ot have them buggy and shut down.
Take as much time as you guys need on ravensword, because the more time you spend the less bugs there will be on release.

Devs, don't feel any pressure to get this game released quick. Take care over the final checks to ensure that it is a top quality game, with no bugs/issues. I don't mind if it takes you until christmas to iron out all the problems. Looking forward to the release :)

yes - remember I wrote that just in case anyone asked.
the redoing of the entire control system gave us a few days delay, we are going through all of the final bugs now.
Take your time. I still have not even made it through Dungeon Hunter all the way. As long as the controls are good and not frustrating, you will do fine. Also, just set a reasonable price and keep it that way. $5-$7 would be great.

Here's a pic of the new HUD - you will notice nothing on the screen.
That's because theres a transparency setting in the options now, and you can
make it completely invisible if you like. We arranged the layout of the controls so its very easy to play even with no controls on the screen, and it gives you a nice view of everything. There are other nice things in the settings as well.
We are just finishing up.

There's only been one real delay. When Chillingo agreed to publish the game, they chose 10/15 as a submission date. Josh and Russ have done all they can to stay close to that date -- and they would have certainly made it if the decision had not been made to overhaul the control system. As a beta tester, I can't say anything about the game itself, but it should be obvious that it takes time to properly test something of this size.
Nobody is as anxious to get this game on the app store as Josh and Russ. And trust me: it's pretty darn close.

Why don't you just keep them both as optiojs so people can choose which one they prefer?
If you like the sandstorm or dexter controls I think you will like this.
having both sets of controls gets tricky, because you have to have calibration on the screen as well, so the HUD has to change if you have both.
Just curious - which controls did you like? (or were referring to?)

i am most happy to have the new controls, i wanna thank you guys for adapting them to your game, they really are very effective.
JoshCM
10-18-2009, 07:34 PM
It was really Eli and Arn from touch arcade that convinced us to put the new controls in. they thought the original ones were a little strange - I was so used to them by that point that they didn't bug me.
I'm still getting used to the new ones, but I like them better already. :)
Why don't you just keep them both as optiojs so people can choose which one they prefer? You mean the old one analog to walk and turn directions, as opposed to swipe and look?
Why not both?
jLFS2KBlKHI
Check it (especially at 3:50). The character can walk around like in the original Ravensword videos with one analog stick. When you move the stick slightly to the left or right, he turns slightly. But you can still swipe to look around. Throw in the fact that he automatically targets his closest enemy OR target by tapping on them. Now allow him to strafe by holding extreme right or left on the stick.
See, everything in one game, and it's already proven. JoshCM made the right choice with adapting them.

JoshCM
10-18-2009, 08:30 PM
IF - and I mean if - we finish the last bit of stuff in the next day or two,
it gets submitted to Chillingo and passes their tests, it could be submitted by Friday. I was hoping for Thursday as it would have been exactly one week when I said after we finished the controls. In that sentence I can't promise anything but it is our hope that it gets submitted this week.

I hope this game has massive free roam like the quest
The Quest is massive, but huge chunks of it kind-of-sort-of look the same. Without revealing anything about what I know of Ravensword, can you imagine what it would take to make something as big as the Quest but with unique 3D landscapes? Do you think that's something a mobile device could handle? More to the point, do you think that's something a small development team could manage to put together? At App Store prices?
Please be realistic about your expectations, folks. The iPhone is great, but it's no PS3.
JoshCM
10-19-2009, 08:52 PM
Yes - I agree with that. Its a world that feels big and open to explore(for an iPhone game), but you have to have realistic expectations about it.
Also, it doesn't have all of the fanciness of a hardcore RPG like the Quest - its half adventure game (zelda) half RPG (oblivion) scaled down to iPhone size of course.
I have said this before, but we do plan to have a pretty extensive expansion pack right after this. (Now that all of the game infrastructure is there) I'm hoping that it will be DLC that will exist right in the game - so you could buy Ravensword latest version, and click download expansion pack - while your playing, get all of the customization, extra weapons, extra levels, and more. Its already got a decent 7-8 hour play time (give or take depending how much you don't explore or mess around. I hope that answers some questions.
