View Full Version : Best Pick-Up and Play Game?

What's the best pick-up game out in the appstore?? A game you could just open up, play for a few minutes, close it, then come back to it in a little while. Not a game like Hero of Sparta or BIA, where you have to play for long periods of time. Any suggestions? Also, no puzzles or sudoku please :)

Dropship, maybe Platypus but it takes about 15 seconds to start up....Dr. Awesome, and Scribball.

For me I have 3 go-to games right now: Touchgrind,Wave Blazer, and Touchsports Tennis 09. They load quick, easy interface menus to navigate quickly, all 3 save if you have a call, and the latter two save if you have to shut off phone quickly.

Great thread!
For me it would be ishoot, bike or die or galcon.

Galcon. You can even do a pick up and play multiplayer game. There aren't many games in general that can boast that.
Frenzic hasn't been mentioned yet either. It autosaves right where you left off.
Dropship was already mentioned, but it's worth mentioning again.

Spin is very good in that, but also all the shooters like dropship (I actually think all the ng: games are perfect to pick-up and play XD), space deadbeef, vector blaster and 2079.

I'm a little biased but there's an unlockable mini-game in Debris which I think is actually among the best pick up and play games out there. Our next game will actually be a complete title based on that unlockable. When that arrives it will be one of the best choices to play when you've got just a few minutes to kill.
Other titles I enjoy in short burst are Dropship (great game), X-Plane, Topple, and Cube Runner. I also enjoy BIA and other more intricate games but usually I'm quite busy so the 1-5 minute burst games really capture my attention.

My favourite PUAP games-
Virtual Pool (literally start playing a quick game within 5 seconds of pressing the app button)
PapiJump
TS Tennis
iShooting Gallery
Eat Bunny Eat (don't half get fast!)
Trace
MotionX Poker (dice, not cards)
Venger
AutoMangle
ZombieMangle (not out yet, but when it is I thoroughly recommend it for a good quick blast)

Scoops, Dr. Awesome, Plateau, Mouse About, Motion X Poker, Fuzzle/Beecells, Bubble Bash, Bejeweled 2, Mines.
I have two home screens for games. The first one is for one-handed pickup-and-play-games ("toilet games") and the second on for games, which take a bit more, like 2079, Dropship, Enigmo, Snail Mail, Fieldrunners etc.

Fuzzle is awesome. I play it all the time - sometimes for 2 minutes, sometimes up to an hour. :)
It saves right when you leave and its easy to start. An excellent pick up and play game.

motionX Poker Quest... king of pick up and play. Sessions can last 30 seconds to 5 minutes, up to an hour.
EA's sudoku is another one of my favorites if you like that... finish an easy puzzle in 5 minutes.
I love Katamari - each round lasts around 5 minutes.
These are the ones that I have found to be the most satisfying for those small sessions.

Crazy Tanks. I love it, it's a great diversion if I have a few minutes to kill. Now at no.5 in the top 100 paid apps and more fun than anyone deserves for .99c. I hope it knocks iFart Mobile from no.1.

I have to say ZoneOut is a really good pick up and play game...I find myself coming back to it again and again.

I have to admit, I am a little biased but Tile Poker (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=330906334&mt=8) is a really great pick up and play puzzler. It loads fast, auto saves your game, and the nature of the play allows you to invest as much or as little time as you want.

I personally like Puzzle Quest. That's usually my pick up and play game. Just turn it on, do one fight or more depending on how long you have/want, then just quit when you beat them, since it auto-saves. And it's really good too. I also use Zombieville in the same way. When I have time I turn it on, beat a level, and turn it off.

Doodle Jump. And believe it or not Rolando 2 isn't too shabby either. It loads rather fast, loved playing it real quick when I had some leisure time this week.

A little bit of self-promotion for Spazzle and Spazzle II... but to make it fair, I'll defer to a quote from one of our reviewers:
"This game is definitely one of the best pick up and play, kid-friendly games the AppStore has to offer... You get a highly polished game that will surely keep you entertained while on the go." - The APPera
Spazzle II saves your game state if you get a phone call or whatever...
Other personal favorites:
Aqua Globs, Fling, Peggle

Doodle Jump...now only if they could reduce the load time at startup:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Why are people saying Dropship?
If that's the benchmark pick up n' play then 90% of the app store is. All puzzle games would be a pick up n' play.
It should be more refined to games that you can FINISH in 1 short sitting but encourages replay.
I was thinking more along the lines of Flight Control, Orbital, Touchgrind, Drop7.
