Trace is a platformer where you draw your own path through the levels. It is 100% FREE, and was designed from the beginning to be the first free game for iPhone to not be a teaser demo, or a tiny little one-level highscore game. 6 worlds, 120 levels, and a complete original soundtrack. The game is largely a casual, play for 5 minutes at a time style of game, but it also keeps track of every stages' high score time, as well as a total time for all 120 levels, for all the hardcore completionist gamers out there. Our current 100% high score is 29m:51:68, and if you can beat that, take a picture and email it to us (address is on the web site) and we'll post the top scores on the site!

As of yesterday, it has passed review and is now in the 'legal documents, etc.' stage, so it should be out in a few days :)

and i assume, since you aren't selling it, you wont get legal pressure from the Line Rider Company that forced the other app off [that was basically line rider]

but this isn't line rider, and looks better then line rider

Well, the video definitely makes it look more interesting than the screenshots, that's for sure! I'm looking forward to trying this out, especially as a free download.
I understand there may be some 'legal' issues, but do you still have an estimated timeframe?

It's kinda out of our hands as I said, but it's been in the 'Finalizing cortracts' phase at apple for almost a week. We submitted it like 2 weeks ago, review is passed already. I'm pretty sure we're not gonna have any legal issues though; it's a platformer, where Line Rider is more of a....auto movement thing, I guess? I think it's just on the basis of line drawing, which can be argued is more of a genre more than a game specific thing.

I completely agree with you that while your game may use line drawing, it's an actual game based on the genre of line drawing. It has levels, and a "purpose" as opposed to simply making a 'ride'.
Wish you the best of luck and definitely hope this doesn't turn into a legal issue in any way.
Again, I'll definitely be picking this up the minute it comes out. As I said earlier, your video has really peaked my interest.

Nothing's happened yet... It still says 'O Pending Contract' in the online dev center, it's been on that stage since..last Friday, I think. Maybe it'll come out now that Line Rider has already? XD

Looks a bit like Touch n Go on the ds. The similarities: side scrolling, avoid obstacles, draw additional terrain (clouds in Touch n Go). The differences: Touch n Go had a constant scroll through the game, and let you shoot from Yoshi. If you wanted, you could probably take it slightly more toward that style in the future, or keep what you have now. What might make it more "puzzly" is if you have to pick up certain things in the level so you can't willy-nilly use lines everywhere b/c they'd block you on the way out. But maybe you already have that, just not in the youtube clip.

Great to see free cute apps though!

Sorry it is taking so long. Just for the record, it was submitted to apple 8/27, got the accepted review email 9/3, and has been stuck at contract setup since then. So its been over two weeks for contract so far.... will hopefully be released in few days?

When it comes out, please post what you think of it! suggestions/comments/concerns appreciated!

I have an update to the situation. I contacted apple, and they said that contract setup currently takes 4 weeks to process. Having submitted it on 9/27, four weeks will be tomorrow. Just a few more days hopefully.

I sent another email to apple's finance department, have not replied yet. Its pretty much out of my hands, ill post whenever I get more information.

Yeah we thought about making an paid version, but I wanted to wait until we got some feedback on Trace first. It looks like people are interested, so look forward to an enhanced version in the future! Probably not until the end of the year though, need another month or so to finish the game I'm currently working on.

Apple has issues getting the awesome apps that we've all been waiting for, to the App Store. It shouldn't take this long to get it set up and placed in the store. I love the game look and idea and I hope that there is Trace+, because it would be awesome!!!

Played it a short time. So far looks like it will be fun, but is anyone else finding that the jump button isn't always responsive? I'm sure I'm hitting it, but sometimes it doesn't work if I press it while I'm moving. I find it more reliable if I jump, then move.

Yes, there is a glitch that sometimes prevents you from jumping if you are walking down a steep hill, this will be the first thing I fix in version 1.1.

Please post anything else that you find, like glitches or suggestions, so I can fix them in an update.

Also, if you press jump and then move while in the air, you can get around this, since there's free movement while you're airborne. There's only 2 levels where downhill jumping is necessary, I think, so it's not too bad.

Usually when I'm standing still and want to jump forward rather than up. It could just be an issue with recognizing multiple input at the same time.

When making two inclines you have to restart the level because you cant pass through.

Say I make an incline going up, I reach the top then make an incline in the opposite direction. It makes this shape >. If I happen to die I have to restart the level because once you get the point you can't jump through the other line to continue.

Not a big issue though.

If you leave a little space between your inclines (like make the second one a little higher so they do not connect), you would be able to fit between them so you can use them again after you die. The screen is too small to really totally avoid this kind of thing, so that's why there is a restart button.

And another note: hitting the restart button will reset the level timer, so if you are going for a highscore, you don't have to go back through the level select screen.

Hi Bovinedragon. I love your app. Superb. But I too thought there was a problem with the reset button not working, and said so in my initial iTunes review (have changed since finding out it needs a double tap). You really need to tell people about this.

This is also the case when perhaps the player draws the platform a little too long or too steep, and just wants to remove a little off the end. What about having a toggle button for draw/erase?

I haven't got that far yet, but I had a real problem with level 60, the last Plant level. I am sure it was just luck that I finally managed it.

Dude... the Flame levels are INSANE! 96 is kicking my a$$! This, of course, is why I am loving it!

Can't wait to get to Space!

I deleted a post I'd entered earlier as I was getting stuck on some of the stages in the Chalk area. I was also stuck on one or two in the Fire area. But I have since overcome the challenges.
What I am writing about is I am getting through the areas one after the other as they are listed on the map/area select screen. I started with Paint, then Plant, Chalk, Fire, and then Water. However, I found Water to be VERY easy in contrast to Fire and Chalk. This is due, as you are aware, to the fact that the stages in the Water area are numbered 21-40. So it is in fact, the second area that the player should go to after Paint. On the area select screen this isn't obvious at all. I think the area select screen should not only make it more obvious as to the proper order to play them in (in order of difficulty) but also to mark the areas that have been completed.
Not only that, but when you are in a stage and you press the Back button, it should return you to the stage select screen of that area rather than take you back to the area select screen.
I am liking it otherwise- challenging, but fun.

The thing is that I drew the world select screen before we knew what the order of the worlds was going to be, and I really like how it looked so I decided to leave it even though It was kind of out of order.

However I will add a star or something to show what worlds you have completed.

I have had another idea regarding playing the areas in the order of difficulty. How about the first time you complete the final stage of an area it automatically moves you to the next area? This way the game guides you to play in the order of difficulty, but still gives you the option to return to the area select screen if you want to play in an alternative order. Or what about a number next to each area on the area select screen?
What do you think?

The game is turning into one of my favourite apps, but I do get a little frustrated sometimes when objects you are supposed to dodge move a bit too quickly (like the alien ships in the Space area for example), making you rely more on luck than on skill/strategy. Love it otherwise.

The music, mood and feel of the game are amazing for a game that is free. I am very impressed with Trace. Thanks to the devs for producing something with such creativity. I will buy anything else they put in the app store. I can't put this thing down.

I agree. I have Just completed all the stages- 79:05 on the clock. Pretty rubbish time, but I'm just happy that I managed to get passed some of the trickier stages (there are quite a few)!

this is the best shit on the app store

classic game with simple game play, design, and graphics but at the same time addicting and challenging.

shoulda charged for this game man cause ppl would pay for this and you coulda made some money

already logged on over a a few hours on the game

downloaded this as soon as it came out, had to search kevin to get it cause when you searched trace it still wasnt up

first review too

bad ass game, perfect music, developer did excellent job

you can almost do it, because of some collision errors

that could almost be another angle to the game, the first is to complete it with the shortest time, and then another would be, if you could some how track the amount of lines, in some sort of percentage or whatnot, to complete it with the least amount of drawing

anyway, the game is fun...looking forward to trace+

where you can hit or hold down a button, and it changes the angle so you trace around in a 3d cube environment...so standard view is the 2d way as it is now, hold down the button, and it changes to a 3d view, where you can mvoe on the z axis and draw on the z axis...

it was done on a 2d scroller recently, i forget the name, it was mentioned on this forum a month or so ago, and it is absoultly amazing

My thought was that once you finish a world, It would take you back to that world's level select screen so you could see your now completed high score time for that world.

I had planned to have a few more game modes, such as least amount of lines, but they didn't make it into the game. This will probably be in Trace+.

Yeah does sound like Super Paper Mario. I own that game, and I didn't really like it. It had a few good puzzles, but was mostly just gimmicky. If Nintendo cant pull it off, i doubt i can.

Downloaded the game yesterday. I am very impressed! The graphics match the game so perfectly!

I agree with the above that the world selection screen is confusion. Adding a number next to each name, and a star next to each completed world, will make it much better.

I also suggest you add an options screen. Or at least a screen where you can reset game data.

I also have another suggestion. Make the movement buttons a bit bigger, and maybe a bit more round? I often find myself missing the buttons with my thumbs when I'm not looking. It's annoying.

Otherwise, amazing work!

That'd be my only suggestion. I find it hard to hit the buttons a lot of times. I'm sure it's an easy fix.

I'm stuck on #68 in the Chalk area (Where the hell do you GO!?!?!) and #96 on the Fire area, which seems like it just takes a whole lot of luck.

Anyone know how to beat 68 though?

Yes, this took me a while too. Basically, with a few of these chalk levels, the answer is staring at you. All I'll say is calculate the answer to the sums.

For 96, I just placed loads of small platforms all over the screen to give me plenty of options if I needed to drop down or jump above the flames. I don't know if that's the best way to complete that stage, but that's the way I did it.
97 is definitely all in the timing and where you place your platforms.

After staring at the screen for about 5 minutes straight, I realized that it looped :). Then I just took a screenshot, and in my head figured out a path.

I'm brilliant.

Now I am stuck on the last plant level... AND THEN I'M DONE!!! Kevin Calderone - Amazing app. Simply amazing. I would have paid 5 - 10 dollars for this app if it had some more level packs or something.

My only suggestion would be to change the red stick guy to a ball or something...less clunky (Lol)

And to CloneWars, I'm stuck on 60 too :)

I usually go between the 2nd and 3rd from the left, follow the middle one around, and jump onto top platform from its right side. Ive also done it by going up the left side of screen. Good luck!

My way is similar. I draw a platform straight through like this-

and usually, with good timing, can jump straight onto the top platform from the left.

New version out TODAY! It's great. All the new functions are well done. I particularly like the new red man instead of the stick. I think he's hilarious! I love his little hands sticking up in the air when he's jumping, haha!
One thing though BD, I suggested the Back button (when playing a stage) should take you back to the stage select screen rather than the world select screen (which you agreed on!). However, this hasn't been implemented in the new version. Did you forget or change your mind?

I don't plan on making any more levels for this version of trace, your just going to have to wait until trace 2.

The one more thing that I do plan to add to his version of trace, as well as all of my games from now on, is online high scores. This won't be for a little while tho, I have not even bought a website yet, maybe in a month or so.

I'd like to point out that Trace goes against every landscape game in that it requires a clockwise rotation instead of counter clockwise, which feels very unnatural given that all other apps have it so that the home button is on the right (rather than on the left as you have it).

It's a minor point, but it does feel counter intuitive. In fact I keep orientating it like I would any other landscape game, which of course to Trace is upside down... ;)

Game plays very nicely otherwise. Good job.

There are also several other games, which rotate in this direction and I prefer this direction, because I don't hide the speaker with my fingers.

But overall it would be better, if the games would let us choose the direction or rotate automatically, like Apple does with the movie player.

I don't know about anyone else, but I found the easiest way is to plaster small platforms all over the screen like this...

This way, while you are making your way across the screen, you have given yourself plenty of options if you need to climb higher to jump over the flames or drop to a lower platform to duck under them.
