View Full Version : Who's sick of sales?

There have been so many game sales recently, and I am sick of them. Sales are good especially on games like Doom but when they're so close together my wallet can't take it!

I know that it isn't a discussion point (my above rant) but say you promised yourself you wouldn't buy any more games on sale for a while, what game sales would make you cave in and buy the game?

For me, I'm only going to buy Worma when it goes on sale, and maybe something like killtest if it has an introductory sale.

i think your weird. why would you hate sales? I dont understand people getting mad because prices of games are dropping. You dont need to get every game that gets a sale.

Some people unlike others have not much money and stick to a budget. When loads of games you've waited to go on sale for all go on sale at the same time it is costly.

if a lot of games you've waited for go on sales, its basically like a buy 1 get one free. I rather buy 2 games that are on sale then getting 1 game for a high price.

Sounds like you just need some willpower, friend...not less sales.

I think the point he's trying to make is that sales make you buy games you wouldn't have bought if they were full price, therefore wallets get lighter unexpectedly.

How so?

They work on me :o

(I'm currently tracking $75 worth of games in PandoraBox. I have no objection to paying full price, and often do... but I want MORE games. Always MORE :) So sales are welcome sometimes.)

...and it's also why people run out of money. People don't like having no money. Having "a" sale is no problem, everyone's happy, but being bombarded with all this temptation is dangerous on yer bank balance.

So you are sick of sales but Doom was okay, and you'll be sick of sales until Worms is on sale then you'll love it?

So what you actually mean is "Only have sales on the games I want and only when I can afford them".

I hate when things go on sale after I bought it at "full" price.

It happens... it just sucks that when it happens in the app store, you can't get a price adjustment like at a retail store! Oh well.

That's a lame excuse too. You know full well sales still urge and tempt people into buying apps they weren't planning on buying even without the need for a gun.

That is so true. Im a patient man. I don't have much money on hand and i don't buy new releases game. I might only break this buy new releases game when Modern Combat: Sandstorm come out...The rest, it can wait...

I just take that to mean you're more of a causal gamer than some. You say you'd break it for MC:S, presumably because you think it's going to be great... well, those of us who are into gaming more than you feel that way about a lot of games.

Yeah I loved MW too, didn't get into WaW though. Pre-ordered the Prestige Edition of MW2, I'm sure those NVG's aren't going to be very effective, but as a display of game memorabilia they're awesome.

I was tempted to buy Prestige Ed. but my marriage is coming early next year. I already passed a couple of games that i really liked. But i can't ignore MW2. Believe it or not. My last game thati bought was Gears of War 2... Anyway, off topic now...

I think people should realize that games will go on sale eventually, you just don't know when. So, before you buy a game you really need to think a couple times if you really need it now or later. It's just like clothings, shoes... after a couple of days/weeks/months... it go on sale.

Just like what happened to me recently...

I just bought a sandal, it was on sale 30 bucks. I thought, it was a steal from regular price 65 dollars. After 2 weeks, it dropped to 14.99... So WTF... But bec. i want it so badly... that's happened... LOL! I should have been a little more patience... LOL!

This is my beef right here.

I don't mind when developers make make thier apps go on sale. They have the ability to do so, and will utilize that ability. Simple psychology will show that impulse purchases are even more tempting when it goes on a sale, especially drastic ones. I have ton's of games that I probably would not have gotten had they have not been for .99 cents. Ask me when the last time I played HALF of those games? lol

My thing is, why would developers want to do it so low? When you drop a game from 6.99 to .99 cents, you will probably get more sales, but the profit? Probably not as much if you would have kept it at 6.99 and then dropped it to maybe 5.99 or 4.99.

Im not saying I am a marketing expert here or anything, I know little about it. It does however piss me off when I buy a game *cough* Wolfenstein RPG *cough* at full price when it has only been released for a week, and then they drop it the next day. Why? It is a great game at 4.99 and I had no problem paying for it. But why drop it? It was a great deal at 4.99. You are only losing profit there...

I know it's not like developers will straight up say "Hold off buying _____ because it will be on sale on the 13th!". No, but the iDevice community is so used to constant sale after sale after sale, that now a game that would be great priced at 4.99, get's shouted down by cheap-asses saying "That's too much. I'll wait for a sale". Inevitably, the developer will see sh!tty sales, and be forced to drop the price JUST SO people will buy it. Thus is the reason .99 cent games are ruling the App store, and great games like Doom Res will slowly but surely see less and less the light of day.

Stay Strong Firemint, keep Real Racing at $9.99. lmao

everyone wins with sales, developer gets money (impulse buys or not, thats the nature of sales!). the profile of the game is raised, this is important with dozens of new titles each day, you want it to stand out! the end user ofc gets a game they clearly would like but wasnt sure about, saves money in doing so and can maybe grab another couple of sale items .. more games!

as mentioned elsewhere on the forum, games are a luxury, if you cannot afford your habit/hobby then you have to do without. that rule applies to everything in life im afraid.

I get a slight pang of upset when a game goes on sale right after I bought it, but then I realize that if I bought the game when I did, it was because I felt it was worth the asking price at the time.

My only lasting issue with sales is that they may be skewing the perception app-store as more of a flea-market than a retail environment. The feeding frenzy that sales are intended to create also creates a sense that the app-store is a bargain-basement kind of shop. This perception may make developers of some of the more high-end (i.e. expensive to develop) games think twice about bothering...which in turn could lead the app store into catering to cheap games made cheaply.

I think this was the reasoning behind the rumored "premium" game section, to try and carve out a space specifically to highlight (and hopefully sell) more expensive games to make development of these games more attractive.

I wanted to say something deep and noteworthy regarding how developers should stick to their guns instead of trying to appeal to all the WalMart-minded cheapskates that are detrimental to the production of quality games, but Rusty did it for me. Cheers.

I am SICK of sales. They dont do the devs any good. I have been burned in the past, but more so recently. Because of this, if a game is over 0.99, I will now wait for a price drop, because it is bound to happen on a good amount of games. I am all for supporting devs, but cannot stand losing out on a couple bucks because of a couple hours difference. Either make a sale on release day and never go underneath that price, or dont put your game on sale!!

If it means anything to you - we aren't doing any sales on RS(at least until RS2 comes out). We thought about it, but in the end, its really not worth it. Because many big sales happen at the same time with the bigger publishers, its just more competition and less money. I agree with your point.

heffdog116
12-24-2009, 09:58 AM
I definitely agree with you. On bigger games such as RS, I do not see any big advantages on a weekend or Holiday sale. If people havent bought the game yet, and miss the sale, they will probably just wait for the "next" sale since there was already one. Once you start, its tough to stop lol. If you keep the price constant, everyone is happy. Lately, I have seen smaller games with too big of a price tag for the app store, which leads to a week-after release sale. I obviously understand where devs are coming from, but they have to understand that the early supporters get burned!! Thanks for understanding Josh lol

It sounds like some of you are saying this:
I can't practice self control and spend within my means so I want the game devopers to not add to my shortcoming by tempting me with sales.

I have a solution for you guys... Promise yourself to not purchase anything next month. I did that from mid October to mid November and I'm glad I did because now I don't feel as guilty for buying the motherload I have this month. :)

Okay, here's a direct reply to the complaint:

"I don't like sales because they get me to buy too many games and spend all my money"

I think it's mostly because 0.99 is easily affordable by most people. Plus the value you get for just that small amount seems like a very good deal. I mean, arcades cost about .50 for most of the games and they're only going to last you at most 15 minutes. I can easily spend $20 at an arcade and go home with nothing to show for it except for a short period of fun. Now, take that same arcade attitude and what do you get? Well, I have about 100+ apps and no, I haven't played a lot of the games but I really do plan to.

If the sheer number of 0.99 sales are overwhelming you and making you spend too much money, then it's really not the sales but your lack of willpower. Seriously. And don't gamble. I personally like collecting games. I have about 20 used games I bought for the ps2. Haven't played half of those either.

Oh and by the way, Merry Christmas
