Version in the take: 1.01
Submarine, the original stealth weapon. This is a game about one lone German submarine. Its mission: to hunt down Allied transport convoy, avoiding escorts, destroying enemy war efforts, while staying "afloat" to the end.
There has been many submarine games in the App Store, but most of them are more arcade oriented. Hunter Sub stands out as being more of a "simulation" . Don't be scared by this label, the game actually removes many boring and technical elements of a real simulator. Each game starts out where you are well placed before the path of a convoy, you don't have to cater for the trouble of locating one and moving into position. The number of ships are random by each game and from there you can deploy near-to-real-life tactics.
Your boat has torpedoes as the only weapon but with unlimited supplies and you have only 4 tubes, which means that you can only have 4 fishes in water max at the same time. All tubes with 360 degrees of coverage and the firing solutions are automatically plotted for you. How "visible" your boat depends on various factors such as depth, speed and it is summarised into one simple "visible" value. The control of the boat is done by buttons, sliders and plotting on the screen. The graphics may seem primitive and lack of the sub-driver feel. However, the layout is convenient and logical. The sound FX is just sufficient and without any background music other than the title theme.
The gameplay is easy to pick up, especially if you have some ideas of what real submarine warfare is all about. Each game is all about one single encounter, if you decide to call it a day, you can end the game anytime, except, when your boat is sunk, it is automatically game over. The final score is about the type of ships you have sunk (merchant and naval) and the tonnage involved. In the version under review, 3 different levels of difficulties are added.
The downside is the slider controls are still a bit too small. The ships hit do not show any sign of damage, not even slowing down. Also, it is still incredibly hard to sink any naval vessels. Even a wimpy frigate can sustain more than 3 torpedoes hits.
To sum up, Hunter Sub captures the excitement of submarine warfare pretty well and the length of each game is enough to keep you entertained.
