Regarding the icon on the first post, WC Pool has an icon very similar- a Pool ball as the pic, with a black background to make it stand out from all the square icons.

That's exactly what I think about touchgrinds icon too. Anyway, I think tanzen, rolo, and asphalt (even though the game isn't great) have some of the coolest icons out of the apps I own right now. I'm on my touch so I can't embed the pictures, sorry.

I noticed this too, when the app first came out. I wrote to the dev about it:

Thanks for the votes for Twitterrific and Frenzic, naturally we put a great deal of effort into their design. This thread has been great because I've seen so many icons I didn't know about before. There's just too many apps in the App Store to browse them effectively.

The comment about apps that have words in their icons is dead on. An icon in the App Store is always accompanied by the apps name and it really doesn't belong in the graphic itself IMHO. I realize this is the fault of marketing people who don't know any better, but SPORE could totally have done without it and just used their little spiral logo instead. Missed opportunity there.

If you *have* to put the name of your app in your icon, then at least do it with style and integrate it well, like Dash Ball does. Sim City's icon is just a blob, which is disappointing.

Hmm, that's not necessarily a bad thing. the SE logo is quite good. It's not similar enough that it's any sort of problem.
I've worked with the Ericsson SDK, btw, and I can tell you one thing - the iPhone SDK is infinitely better!

Oneid called Wine Enthusiast (Lifestyle app). On one hand it looks like the middle part of a wine glass... On the other hand it looks like a woman's crotch! Sorry I cannot paste the image on my iPhone. I'm really quite stunned Apple would let this through, given their stance against xxx stuff. Anyway, definitely a contender for the most tasteless icon (no pun intended)

Haha. I hadn't seen this one. It is a great icon, as this is the kind of icon that all apps should have. One that provokes a thought. This one is just has alcohol and naked persons.
