View Full Version : Poll: Do you like Rolando?

This is a poll for everybody, because the game seems to be getting mixed reaction lately. I have it, and I love it, but I want to know what you all think. Post comments to explain.

I think some people are hating it only because of all the hype it got. I bought it and I enjoy it a lot. Others are complaining it is a little on the short side, but it really isn't too terribly short. It's a game that lasts at least five hours and more if you decide to get the achievements.

I'd give the game 9/10, but a perfect 10 if it had downloadable/user created levels. That way you wouldn't have to worry about the length of the game and it would help justify the price more for the people who don't like purchasing higher priced apps.

EDIT: ^Yes, what he said, about user created levels, that would be fun.

I dont have it, but the reason that i never bought it is because the gameplay never really impressed me. I mean honestly, it seemed a little boring, idk. I really should look up a gameplay vid on youtube or something to makea final judgement, but then theres the issue of its legnth. So i think before i bought it id have to know they were planning an expansion, or something of that sort.

You don't like platformers? How is that possible? :P This is the highest quality platformer type game you can get for the iPhone. Toy Bot Diaries is definitely second on the list.

I gave it a perfect 10 (well i go to 5, but same thing). Its a great game, and really fun. It is the greatest game currently on the app store, and should end up at #1 sometime, but only because Sim City boosted my confidence in $9.99 apps being #1.

I think this thread needs to be limited to the people who actually bought the game.

I'm fine with people posting their thoughts on it w/o owning it (as long as they mention they don't have it), but I'm not ok with users saying it sucks when they've never even played it.

I didn't even realise their was hype for this game up until the last week before it came out. At first I was a little turned off by the hype, but then I played it and loved it. It's my favourite game for the iPhone.

I bought it on day 1 and I love it!
I've already finished the game and am now getting all the achievements.
It's fun, but a little short. Maybe they'll release a new story mode via an update. That'll be great!

I got it on like Day 2 or 3, and I loved it. I'm still going back and getting all of the medals and whatnot. Its a great game that can only get better in updates. Any better and it will break my reviewing scale.

Can we add "Still waiting for a price drop" to the survey??? I want it, but this is one of the games I can wait for a price drop, even if it's 3 months... If it's been 3 months and no drop, then I will get it. :)

I would, but I don't know how to edit the poll. I was going to add a few other options, but it would complicate it too much. The poll is mainly for people who already have it.

played it, not bad, but personally i dont really like it.
they shouldve include more type of goal in this game other than saving king or just going in to the tent thingy (which could be done in user-made maps?)or more type of rolando, its kinda get repeatitive and boring after playing it for a while. (im kind of people who likes games with a lot of features like GTA) well that was just my opinion

I took me several days to finish it, and I loved it. If people say it's a bit short I won't strongly disagree, but I didn't rush through the game, so I enjoyed every moment of it. It's a game that's challenging and you won't completely make it the first time through. However, achieving all the goals is defenitely possible with a few tries. It could have been a little more challenging, but I did thoroughly enjoy the gameplay, replayability, and the discussions about the game here on the forums (which, for me, are also part of the enjoyment of a game).

I found the hype ,the discussion, the fake release posts, the release, then the complaining, and the arguing, just as much, if not more than the game itself. Maybe we should get people worked into a NFS frenzy, and sit back and watch. Who knew that Rolando would be so EPIC.

Not usually a fan of the adventure games but Rolando is outstanding. Besides having solid gameplay, one of the best things about it is how polished it was, compared with the majority of the iPhone games out there. It is really the complete package - gameplay, music, challenging.

Hopefully there will be upgrades/sequels!

Well that's the same for almost all platformers and games with levels. The game does have unlockables, so you can replay it if you want, but I'd still prefer seeing downloadable/user created levels. There's a story mode, so we need another set of levels that are just for fun that we can download.

Woud you say the pricepoint is probably not where this game will settle? I watched NGs two other "hit" titles Dropship and Dr. Awesome plummet in price to $.99, their popularity has staying power though. I just feel like Rolando(Hispanic?) was a good price at $9.99 if you wanted to play it early on, but now I don't feel I would do myself any justice to purchase, since I feel that a price decrease should be a equalizing force to a new home In the $5.99 price range.

I don't see a price drop and settle for a while, so if you want it, and may need help with it before everybody forgets, you're going to have to get it soon. I don't see anymore SMB help threads, so yea, get it now, or fight through it alone.

Rolando is Spanish. It means the Renowned Land. Kinda strange, but w/e.

It may drop, but I don't see this happening for months. (When it starts slipping off the top 50 like what SMB did. SMB dropped to $8 when it started falling off the list, but now it's back.) You'll be fine purchasing it now for $10, as it'll be a long time before it drops, and even then, it probably won't drop more than $2.

Also, Dropship and Dr. Awesome didn't exactly "plummet" in price. They each dropped a measley dollar off to celebrate the release of Rolando. That's not a huge deal, and the $2 you may have bought it for was definitely worth it anyway.

Their are achievables, but nothing to unlock. I was a little disappointed that NOTHING happened when getting them all other than the little blurb that pops up saying 100% game finished. I guess I get the thrill of this picture too.

Still I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It's rare that I even finish a game anymore let alone go through and get all the achievables done. Definitely glad I spent the $10 on it, now I'm disappointed I don't have something to play.

An interesting and polished game, but not sure I would drop $9.99 on it again if I had the chance. It is apparent a considerable amount of time went into the art and design though, an achievement for sure.

The problem with this game is that it has insane potential and that potential not being fullfilled will put a lot of people off, no matter the quality of the game.

Any game with tons of potential not being updated won't stay in the top 25 for long.

Anyway, for the people who don't like/don't want to buy Rolando, would user-created/downloadable levels change your mind? Just wondering, because it seems like each person has a different idea of what's "wrong" with Rolando. Maybe the biggest problem for people is that it is too short for their liking?

Bought it a week later. First impressions were that this game has been polished to a huge degree and has a level of finish and presentation that has been missing from most 1.0 games. The cutesy chat between the Rolandos; the music and sound effects; the control methods; even the level select is refreshingly different.
Afew days later, I haven't played it as much as I would have thought. I'm actually playing Tiki Towers with my wife more than Rolando. I think its because TT makes you think and experiment with different designs more, and rewards accordingly. Also, I didn't play too far in Rolando because my wife would always start the game at my latest level, without really knowing how to control the commandos etc. So she got abit confused about the whole game. I think having seperate profiles would be a good solution. Is that difficult to arrange?
Anyway, back to topic: This game is really well finished, and agree with others that there should be downloadable content or variants of gameplay. Has anyone else imagined a Rolando pinball mini-game? :)

I was jumping up and down awaiting the release. I woke up on Dec. 18, and bam, reviews, news, and everything ready to digest. It was great, and I loved the hype, to an extent. It got a little crazy at the end, but still. Oh, and the game is nice too. It was a great thing for the iPhone as a platform. It generated the excitement that would have people waiting outside Walmart if it were boxed. It generated the excitement of an iPhone upgrade and people waiting to get it. I don't care what you think about the game, the hype was great for the platform to be viable to devs. And the release method means unlimited supply. This is perfect, and now EA, SEGA, and other big names know it. Come on Nintendo, its your turn to jump in the fray.

Loco Roco is somewhat fun. Something I would play if no one's around. I never did buy that game, just downloaded the demo off the playstation store. But come on, those things were really annoying with their singing and bouncing.

I'm never gonna let that go, you sir cheated me out of applying the laws of physics to destroy things. 5 hrs don't seem that bad.

EDNG, I couldn't talk myself into playing for more than a level or two at a time. well the singing never gets THAT bad with rolando. and the rolandos and walls are NOT squishy/deform as it does with LOCOROCO.

it has a lot more depth in a way that you cant compact the rolandos together. you select the rolandos and move them at once or by group.

sorry if im off-shooting to locoroco but since it's close to rolando and that's what you're familiar with, im doing it.

If you couldn't "talk yourself into playing this game more than 2 lvls at a time" then how can you still have such a high opinion of the game?It sounds weird, but for me it just felt right to play only ~6 levels a day. I normally can't discipline myself either when it comes to playing games, but for this one I just knew "I'm going to enjoy this so much more if I take the time for each level and try to finish it with all diamonds + all Rolandos. I won't be able to do that in the first run every time, but it will make me get the most out of every level." Then after finishing the level, I'd go back to get the other achievements. I did that until halfway through the 3rd world, then I decided to first do all levels and go back for achievements later. This way you get 100% achievement and 100% enjoyment.

If you rush through the game to get to the end of all 36 levels ASAP then thatīs fine, as long as you go back to get the achievements.

one of the best games of the year, let alone for this "console"

i dont have a problem with people not liking the game, totally your call but some of you are expecting way too much out of this platform. and for 10 bucks, what do you expect?

maybe a lot of you are kids with allowances and what have you, but hell, ive dropped close to $300 on the app store and its nothing compared to the enjoyment and replay value i've got out of them. mind you, i have a habit of buying almost every music program like noise.io, beatmaker, rjdj, bloom, synthpond, etc etc. but maybe it doesnt seem so bad to me because i've actually used my iphone in a club setting, creating music on the go...and ending up getting paid for doing it. basically i couldnt be more happy with the products i've paid for and i would pay 20 bucks for an experience like rolando (if there was user created levels ala n+ and maybe even a multiplayer element)

EDNG. Its not that its just that it takes a while to acclimate to the controls and everything. I got used to it after a while. Once I got used to the game, it was fine. I can't recommend it enough. Once I throughly played it and everything, a) the controls are perfect. b) the graphics are cute, but perfect for the gameplay. c) great for either short of long play (with iSave). I'm not saying that the game is boring, or impossible to play for a long time. It is simply that I needed control acclimation and everything, for the first world and a half, and so I couldn't play for all that long. You get used to it, and its great from there one. My issue was the Royal Spiky Commandos, that really threw me off, but still, a must have, and the various Rolandos take getting used to.

one of the best games of the year, let alone for this "console"

...but some of you are expecting way too much out of this platform.

Maybe it's because of comments like these.

Anyone who says Rolando is bad is just totally out of line, that is al there is to it. To be honest I don't even think it's a matter of opinion. Unless you don't like plat-formers, in which case I am not sure why you purchased the game. But most people either like them or are indifferent to plat-formers and as a plat-former on any ... plat-form, this game is nothing short of excellent.

Good graphics, good sound, fun quirky gameplay. Overhyped or not, there is NOTHING bad about it. Anyone talking crap is just doing it out of spite.

Ohh. Maybe overall. I dunno, but its #12 paid. That isn't bad, considering the free competition. It may still gain momentum, and get into the Top 10 again. It takes an Apple commercial to help these more expensive ones. Or a preestablished name. And Rolando has neither.

I just recieved a response from ngmoco, through the getsatisfaction site, and they do, in fact, plan to update this version of Rolando somehow. They didn't go into specifics, but I suspect that they will have either new levels or downloadable content. I dunno, but it seems likely, and they aren't going to cut and run with the money they are making.

well the downloadble levels for dropship isnt really working since they release one level like every week. they should do packs of like 5 or so OR a user driven level editor like that plywood thinggy app

I just laughed when i saw the subject of this post.. Just "Rolando" haha oh well

I like the game, but i'm not going to play it all at once, beat it, then forget about it.

I bought it when it came out and still have about 1/4 of it left to play. I play a level every couple of days, and that's enough for me.

Because otherwise they get flamed for not searching before creating a new thread.

This is what happens. Either new threads or they search and revive old ones. Make up your mind on which you want...

I love how it uses multitouch on everything. It's a game that is truly a game that can only be played on the iPhone. I also like the artwork, which is really nice. It also provides a challenge, and for $5, it's totally worth it.

I don't see what the fascination is with this game. It's not terrible (there's far worse in the AppStore), but I can't understand why there's so much hype for this title. Judging by the poll though, I'm in the minority.

i did like it for a day or 2, then i got stuck for a bit so gave it a rest then accidently took it off my ipod and now i had to start again.
I was not that into it so i waited for the update to see what it brings but it just bought secret levels. I wanted levels to play straight away so take note devs u must remember that the game is not saved once its off ure ipod so if i want to play extra levels i want to be able to do it instantly esp a game with no replay value like this.

Pokemon is actually an extremely well designed game that took great advantage of the hardware it was on. It was one of the few titles to utilise the link cable for trading monsters in between cartridges - in fact completing even the original red and blue required that you had at least two carts and a friend's gameboy to trade over all the missing monsters.

It has gotten silly with basically the same game that's been rereleased only with more features and more pokemon, but it sells.

I reckon if Nintendo released the game on iPhone 3.0 you'd get 90% of the pokemon in the game, and 10% through DLC. Yeah, they would. And probably would have WiFi/bluetooth trading.

As for Rolando - yes, it's one of the best on the platform.

I like Rolando. I love Pokemon. I can never really get into Pokemon on my Touch, it just doesn't feel the same as when I was holding the gameboy, but, oh well, I'll take what I can.

Rolando fits the iPhone very well and I'm happy I purchased it at $6. I feel like I've gotten a lot of satisfaction from it and I received my moneys-worth.

No, I don't. Luckily I got the Lite version to try out so I never spent my money on the Full version. I have to admit it is a great idea and many people like it, but I don't. It's amusing and very creative, but to me, it's just not very fun and not right for my tastes.

nate
04-20-2009, 06:17 PM
I voted "yes" but then i got bored of it at the 4th world.

Even though i managed to finish the game I have no urge to play any new levels or complete every challege. They all feel the same to me. If Rolando 2 is just like rolando 1 with more level and 1 or 2 more tricks I dont think i would want to buy it.

Agreed - I'm not sure if I would buy the sequel, but the design and aesthetic of the 1st are very original and, not to mention, a lot of fun.
