Me and my wife recently took up jogging. She wants to get in shape, I want to get my lungs back in fighting form after quitting smoking a few months back. However I'm looking for an app like Nike+ that perhaps doesn't require any overpriced footwear/sensor attachments to work, does anything like this exist?

If you've got an iPhone, you could try iMapMyRun (http://linktoapp.com/imapmyrun), which links up with your www.mapmyfitness.com account online. You need the iPhone as opposed to the iPod Touch as it requires GPS to track your runs. I've got it and it's pretty good, there's a few bugs with it, but the devs seem fairly proactive in releasing updates, and it's improved a lot since the initial version. You can also use it for tracking cycles, walks, hikes etc.
Other alternatives would be RunKeeper (http://linktoapp.com/runkeeper), and iTrail (http://linktoapp.com/itrail). There's probably others as well, check out the Health & Fitness (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewGenre?id=6013&mt=8)section of the Appstore.

Trailguru is good. It's maps your run as well.

Thanks guys, I'm going to check out your suggestion. I have a Touch for now, but our contract with T-mobile is up soon, so I may upgrade to the iPhone so I'll look into all the options.

Runkeeper is good. And they just released a new version of it this week and it's free.
Check it out here: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=300226023&mt=8

you missed runmateGPS(RunMateLite is free version), Endomondo...
Runkeeper & Endomondo sells some gears to attached use.
runmatelite is quite good to share work-outs with friends thru SNS, blogs, website via mash-up and other function.
mash-up data example: http://t.co/oU7Kttau
walk around Health and Fitness and Navigation category, you'll find so many apps for you but, not all the best!
