I'm considering jailbreaking so that I can make VOIP calls using fring/truphone over 3g, directly to a pc user. Could someone tell me what the voice call quality is like over 3g? Does truphone allow me to make voicecalls directly to a pc in the same way that skype does?
Thanks

Edit: done. Installed voipover3g, which makes appstore/fring thing that iphone was wi-fi connection. Using fring to skype over 3g works fine. Still can't download apps over 10mb. Backgrounder is great too; you can leave specific apps running in the background.

Wish I could find something to trick appstore (volpower might say it is however not being able to dl more then 10mbs proves otherwise) and native YouTube to think I'm on wifi

Supposedly a future update will fix the app store/iTunes issue. Not sure about YouTube though.

Start googling around. There is a program that allows you to trick the iPhone into believing that it is on a wifi connection, it worked awesome for me. I lost it when I updated to 2.2, but it's really a sweet deal!

I have for many hours on alternating work days (8-12 hour shifts) Security is the bomb if you have an iPhone for entertainment.

Glad I found this thread. Was wondering the same thing myself. Now that I've tried it I can say that in my experience voip over 3g works fine.

And for those not on WiFi, Nimbuzz is introducing a so-called “Dial-Up VoIP” option that lets users make calls over 3G in over 50 countries,

I've actually heard of people doing this. It's really hard but if you do enough research it might be possible.

It's not difficult at all.

Just go to cydia and get 3G Unrestrictor. This allows you to trick ANY program into thinking you're on wifi: app store for downloads over 10M, youtube for high quality streams, etc. This program is $2, but obviously worth it.

Do you have skype out? Where you can dial regular phone numbers? At one point I really wanted to just get a data plan only and then use the 3g network to make all of my phone calls...however the more I researched the more I read that the call quality wasn't so good since bandwidth and lag on 3g is much more unstable than wifi...

Be curious if you were able to experiment with that or not (regular phone calls that is)...

I grabbed this a while back and after I'd installed it my iPhone (3GS) would lock up after several hours and require a reset before working again (and yeah, I'm pretty sure the app was to blame as it was the first thing I installed after jailbreaking).

Obviously if you don't experience these issues (and during the times I didn't), the app is incredibly useful. Here in London I get very nice 3G speeds and I routinely download podcasts that are bigger than 10MB and 3G Unrestrictor was incredibly useful for that and for using Skype to talk to my mates without using my minutes. I also used it a few times for gaming over the 3G network instead of using WIFI, but unfortunately the latency was a bit too high most of the time.

I'll install it again in a few days in the hope that whatever issue was causing the locks-ups (for me) has been fixed.

I have unlimited skype out and calls over 3g work fine - they sound no different than over wifi. I'm in the nyc area so the 3g network is apparently fast enough to keep up.

SK Telecom subscribers with "All-in-One" and "Number One" plans will be eligible to use the "m-VoIP" service. SK Telecom didn't specify when the launch would occur, or if it would introduce branded apps such as Skype to its handset portfolio.
