View Full Version : Which games are people playing?
Just out of curiosity ... I was wondering which games people are playing on the iPhones/Touches at the moment?
Personally I'm playing Five Dice (Yahtzee clone) and Touch 'Em (touch-based match-3) ... and enjoying both of them immensely.

I enjoy Five Dice and Elevens Balls. The latter is played on a pool table, but it isn't a pool game. You have to combine numbered pool balls so that the total comes to 11. It keeps you thinking, which is why I enjoy it. I can also play these games on the train/subway rides to work without moving my iPhone around, which is a plus! :D

Lately I've mostly been playing Galcon. What an incredibly great game, in part due to the excellent internet play and online rankings. If they'd add voice chat, I'd upgrade to a 2g iPod Touch. I sent the author that suggestion. :)
I've also been playing Butterflies a lot, 2nd only to Galcon, in spite of the fact that the sound was horrendously destroyed by the 2.1 update. I have to play with my headphones out of my ears, and volume turned up loud enough that I can still pick up the audio cues. Having the headphones in is pretty much unbearable due to the screeching and static. It's a very simple, but also eally fun game and for only 99 cents - we just need an audio fix. I sent a note to the developer and included the solution that was posted here by (who... RPGGuy I think?). He thanked me for it, so I expect we'll see an update soon. I also told him he should join these forums. :)
Other stuff too, but those are the main ones I've been playing lately.

Lots of other apps on my Touch, but those are the apps I play regularly.

I guess I'm not a very representative player. I play Star Smasher, Metal Angel, Blue Skies, Funky Punch and I'm still slowly working on Monkey Ball. I also play a lot of Galcon, mostly because I can keep listening to my own music when I play it. Play Scrabble with my wife almost every night. It's nice to not have to put the board on top of the refrigerator when we don't finish a game. The only real puzzler I play is Aurora Feint. Again, the amount I play it has more to do with my ability to play my own music than anything else.
I guess people like puzzles for the "quick in - quick out" idea. Personally, any game that will save my progress at any point is a "quick in - quick out" game to me. If my music keeps playing, then it's truly a "quick in - quick out" because I don't have to restart my tunes when I'm done.

Really? Maybe I put in more time on the game than other players, but I have only had it for 6 days and my Bankroll is $62k. I have 9h 5m in.

MotionX Poker is fun until you've unlocked all the dice and tables. Then you finally realize that all you've been doing is rolling dice over and over again. ;^) It's fun while it lasts, but it's not really much more than a slot machine with "achievements" and once you've gotten all of them, or most, you'll probably never play it again. It's worth the 99 cent asking price, though (I paid the original price.) Also, I think they should have made the different dice sets be unlocked by achievements rather than just by getting 5 of a kind. Perhaps have some unlocked by 5 of a kind, and some special dice unlocked by achievements. That would be a lot more fun then just getting a "gem".
Also, pick up the free dice rolling app from them. Could come in handy some day.

I've purchased about $150 or more worth of games so I will give my 2¢:
Asphalt 4: Elite Racing ($9.99)
This is one of the games I like just because it still amazes me that my phone has such power! It has a good soundtrack and the graphics are great. The game does feel a little buggy at times with the way you steer and I am not sure which method I prefer (accelerometer, tap the sides, or wheel). I got a little bored with it after a while, but it's probably the best racer out there. Edit: What do you know, an update was released right after I posted this. Maybe the controls feel better.
Aurora Feint (Free)
At times it feels like you are just a beta tester, but for free this is such an awesome game. Just try it, you have nothing to lose and will not find a more polished title in the free category.
BattleAtSea ($4.99)
With local Wi-Fi battles available, my wife and I play before bed (she puts me to shame). The interface is done well.
Chopper ($4.99)
Out of all the games that try to make use of the accelerometer, this is one of the few that feels just right. You can adjust the tilt angle, which should be a must in any of these games. It's a fairly easy game until you move the difficulty level up to Hard. I have played this quite a bit and do not regret buying it.
Dizzy Bee ($2.99)
This was one of the first I bought. I wasn't too sure about such a girly looking game ;) but it was a great purchase. I find it to be a great compromise between silly-fun and serious-challenges. Try out the free demo first. I like the originality of this game.
MotionX Poker ($0.99)
This was an awesome surprise for me. I've gotta tell you that I play this way more than some of the $10 games I have purchased. The gameplay is fast-paced and easy to pickup at any time. I love the accomplishments feature, it gives you some satisfaction to reach the goals. Overall, it's just got a very, very polished feel for $0.99. Easter Egg: Try moving the paper-roll titles.
Tetris ($7.99)
I don't get it. Everyone wants to complain because their precious free alternative to this game (Tris) was taken down due to EA's legal pressure. While you may agree or disagree with that action, I have no problem recommending this Tetris game. I have been enjoying Tetris since my GameBoy days, and I probably wouldn't have bought another Tetris title anytime soon if it hadn't have had the touch interaction. I was intrigued so I took a chance on it. I must say that I love it. The controls feel awesome and there is a very satisfying thud you get when you swipe your finger down, woo hoo! The Magic mode is pretty cool and a nice touch to keep it fresh. I think it looks a lot better than the screenshots would lead you to believe (or the 2.5 stars, which is ridiculously off).
I have purchased a lot more, but those are the ones I felt inclined to comment on and have been playing lately.
Cheers!

lately, I've been playing mostly naboko (sokoban) and Enigmo. my phone got totally wiped out about a week ago so I'm a little hesitant to get too deep into anything right now. I may take one last chance at restoring tonight... though I don't have high expecations...

I think people don't realize that Alexey Pajitnov, creator of Tetris, didn't see a dime when his game became a huge success on the NES and especially the Gameboy (33 Million Copies). In 1996 the rights reverted back to him. I don't have any sympathy to the guy that released Tris (or any Tetris hack for that matter), because if you're like me and you enjoyed this game a lot when you were a kid, and haven't bought a legit copy after 1996, it's time to buy this so that Alexey will get the royalty he deserves.

I keep playing Aurora Feint just to max out my stats again after they were wiped. It's taking painfully long with the new gameplay; but I'm nearly there. (I guess I'm just one of those compulsive people that has to finish every game once he starts it).
Cro-Mag for a quick race now and then, same with Crash Bandicoot.
de Blob when my brain is feeling a bit frazzled from work and need something mindless.
Frazzle, but I'm not crazy about any game where you always lose.
Trism or Dizzy Bee if I fancy a bit of a challenge.
Hairball or Papijump if I don't..
Asphalt 4 or GTS World Racing if I fancy a more serious race.
Monkey Ball - best antidote yet for a stress free day!

Well, not really the past few days. I bought it about 2 days ago for $0.99, I think. It's really addicting to me, I'm at two-thousand something by now but if I keep playing it for 6 days I'll most likely be a lot higher. Although it would have been better if they had more unlockable tables, like maybe ones in between (one for $600, one for $2,000, etc.)

I recently picked up Enigmo when it had a price drop. I used to play it back on my Dell Axim years ago, and it feels right at home on the iphone.
I would like to be able to play Frotz (text adventure loader) more often, but the interface feels cumbersome. I never played text adventures before so i know a whole huge world is waiting out there, i just wish the process was less painful for us n00bs.
You can also throw in Metal Angel, Blue Skies, Galcon, Lumen, Lexitron, and Imangi.
Still waiting for some kind of a major update for Vector Pong as well. The games so great, it just needs more content!
And since i've had a few issues with crashes and data loss, i'm thinking about starting up new games in Bomberman, Vay, and de Blob.
Lately I've mostly been playing Galcon..... If they'd add voice chat, I'd upgrade to a 2g iPod Touch. I sent the author that suggestion. :)
.
OMG, voice chat would be AMAZING...that would force me to buy an old iphone or a 2g touch..just for that feature....Why does Galcon have to be so addicting...
I would pay extra money for an expansion pack to it, allowing more game play modes, like they have on the desktop version
hint Hint hint, Phil....

Wow, thanks for the info dudehuge. I didn't know that little tidbit. Now I have to leave a review on the App Store to let other people know. Take a look at the quote from the interview GameSpot UK had with Pajitnov in 2007; he doesn't even let it bother him that he lost out on ten years of royalties (or so he says):
"GSUK: Does it ever bother you that you never got paid for Tetris?
AP: Well, first of all, it's not true, because originally I granted my rights to Tetris to my Computer Center, to my organisation, for 10 years. And when those 10 years expired, I got my rights back. And since 1996, I've been receiving some royalties for it. And I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting now. And I never complain about those 10 years, either... In order to fight for my rights for the rest of my life, I decided to give it up for a while and make it happen. This decision should be done before people realise what we've given them."
Read the entire interview. (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6181946.html)

That's kinda my point. Every game is a "casual" game with this feature. Most of the puzzlers do this. But most of the arcade games are missing the ability to let me hear my own music. And several others lack the ability to save at any point. Just bought Bugdom 2- its a great game, but you have to complete and entire level before you can save. For a game on a phone, that's just not cool. There is no limit to the depth possible in these games, but you have just GOT TO be able to save ABSOLUTELY ANYWHERE for it to be practical on a phone.

I'm Playing quite a few things right now
Mote-M 1.2 Beta - LOTS of good stuff in this one
Aurora Feint 1.1.0.0 Beta - Testing out the community feature and new account creation
Overload - just playing alone, keeping up my skill until a new beta build is ready to test
Pole Position Remix - I love unlocking the new cars and breaking my passing streak
and
Reign of Swords - It has REALLY got hold of my attention right now. I love SRPGs, I like that you can play offline and your progress is added later, plus MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS, I like that you can also earn new units and upgrades by playing well... but I'm kinda miffed that i'm starting at 0 when there are people playing for a lot longer and have scores over 1,000,000 =(

Asphalt 4 has had me hooked for a while. Racing games on the iPhone are pretty addicting.
Imangi is my new love. There's a contest right now for a small prize ($100 iTunes giftcard). I can't seem to break 20th place (that's globally mind you), but I have about a week left to try.
Aurora Feint has had me off and on for a while.
Virtual Pool. I apparently suck this game, but it's well made and has pretty high replay value, even if you suck like the game says I do.
Mastermind is another one, like Imangi, that's good for a little mental stimulation. I prefer these games over mindless most of the time. Meta Squares is another one.
Reign of Swords. Just got it this morning, but I have a feeling I won't be able to put it down.

Does this version of Tetris offer any kind of 2-player play, even if against a computer? I'm somewhat interested in the game, but probably not without any 2-player play. It's one of the things I love best about the Nintendo DS game Tetris DS.

Nope. Unless you consider the Tetrinomes falling your second player. Maybe an update will come someday... maybe. It would be a nice feature, but I don't need it. I really enjoy the gameplay as is.

You know, I've downloaded over 60 programs now and maybe half of them are games. But I rarely play many of them. I try them all out but many just sit there now, taking space. At some point I will need to learn how to remove a game from my iPhone...
Games I've played more than others:
Brain Tuner - turns out to be fun in a group - see who can get the fastest time - I had a blast challenging my boss.
Bejeweled 2 - One of my favorite games on any platform - works very well on the iPhone. I think I play this game the most.
Scrabble - I suprised a friend by downloading this game to my iPhone while at a party when he mentioned it. He then proceeded to play a round. Now I'm hooked, though other games are better for short bursts of gameplay.
JirboMatch - I know it's a silly kid's matching game, but I like the graphics and it's perfect for a touch screen device. Since it's a quick game, I tend to play it while waiting on line for a sandwich.
PegJump - Classic peg jumping game - had to get it. I play it occassionally, though my friend did show me the solution, which kinda takes the fun out of it.
LED Football - I don't actually play this one, but I show it off to those old enough to remember the game. At some point I will play it and go for a touchdown just to hear the victory song it plays. My brothers and I played this game a lot when we were kids.
Dizzy Bee - I really love the game. I used to play it more - not sure why I haven't been back to it in awhile. I think the game deserves awards for the gorgeous graphics and its clever, challenging gameplay concept.
