Story: What would happen if you were in the middle of an intergalactic space battle and you ran out of ammo? Would you survive? This is the primary basis of "CYEARS Shooting Simulator." You are a pilot who trains in a "Shooting Simulator" to perfect your maneuvering abilities in the heat of battle. The story is practically non-existent, but it does establish the whole point of the game, which is the only thing I feel is required. irrelevant/5 stars
Game play: CYEARS will be very familiar to those who have played Space Ninja, in a sense that the game play consists solely on dodging. However what separates CYEARS from Space Ninja is that there are two specific modes, with very specific styles of game play:
Mission Mode: This mode focuses on accomplishing objectives. Each Stage contains 10 Missions; the first 9 Missions have 6 Sub-Missions, and the 10th Mission is a Boss Battle. The Missions are basically types of Simulations such as "Missiles will continue to fire at you." After selecting a Mission, you must select one of the Sub-Missions such as, "Survive for 30secs." There are a vast number of different Sub-missions including: Destroy Markers surrounding your ship; collect objects within the destination requirements; collect objects within a different "gravity" pull, and so on. After completing each mission you will get a ranking (as high as an S-rank) and you'll be rewarded points (These points are used to unlock additional ships).
Trial Mode: The Missions on Mission Mode are really short (they last about 3mins top), because they end as soon as you complete the objective. To satisfy your dodging needs, Trial Mode is the way to go. After successfully completing a Mission in Mission Mode, you unlock the mission in Trial Mode, which acts basically like a survival mode. Try to survive as long as you can to win the #1 spot on the Online Leader boards.
As I am one of those people who thoroughly enjoy this genre of gaming, I found the game play for CYEARS to be absolutely incredible. 5/5 Stars
Controls: This game has two control methods: Touch and Tilt. Touch uses a virtual joystick, which I found to be okay but it isn't precise. The Tilt function is the best, because it works just like space ninja (you can calibrate in the Settings Menu). This category is always the toughest for iphone games, but I feel that the controls for this game are far from frustrating. 4/5 stars
Graphics: All the Sprites in CYEARS are beautiful! (The screenshots do not do them justice) They have a nice retro arcade look to them, and they all move at a smooth frame rate. Once in a while they'll lag, but nothing drastic. The menus are well put together and have a lot of character. Speaking of Characters, the character art is also amazing! CYEARS contains a cast of instructors that are drawn in a Front Mission style. 5/5 Stars
Sound/Music: The sound im CYEARS is decent, it gets the job done. The music is good; there is variety, but the loops are a tad short (but thankfully not annoying). However, if you are annoyed by the music you can listen to your own, and still have the sound effects accompany it. 4/4 stars
Content/Value The game comes with 1 Stage (10 missions) which took me about 2 hours to complete 100% in Mission mode, and I've spent another hour on Trial Mode. This is when I get to the bad part... After completing the first Stage I went to move on to stage 2, I was then asked to buy it for 0.99 cents. I was caught off guard at first, but I did not hesitate to purchase it and it was absolutely worth it. The game contains 7 Stages all together so if you like the game expect to spend an additional $6.
Even if you refused to spend additional money to the $3 you already spent, I have to say there is still a ton to do (You definitely get your moneys worth). For three bucks you get a total of 55 levels in Mission Mode; 10 levels in Trial Mode; 21 different Ships to unlock, and all with Online Leaderboards for every possible statistic you can think of. If you want a little more content throw a dollar in and get another 65 levels. Although the in-app purchasing may seem ridiculous, the value of the content provided is fair for the asking price. 5/5 stars
Problems/Overall: There are some additional problems in CYEARS, but they are rather small. The first is the screen orientation cannot be flipped. The translation is slightly bad, but it's good enough to understand what you have to do.
Altogether I think this game is ideal for those who like Space Ninja. Although it's pricey to get all the content, it is totally worth it. 4/5 Stars
