I just got a ipod touch 2g for an xmas present. I downloaded shazam and fring. Both i need a microphone and i thought the 2g touch had a built in mic. Do i need to turn it on or something or does the mic not work with those apps? Thanks.

heh. Yes, to turn on the microphone, you need to shake the ipod for 10 minutes. Then the accelerometer will notice that you want the microphone. Then it will turn on. TADAA!

also you have to buy zombie mansion. That has a special thing in it that makes the mic work. I dont know how, but it does.

The iPod touch 2g can work with external mics, but does not have one built in.

It also helps if you beat a hooker with your iPod. That usually turns the mic on. If not try hitting it with a baseball bat a few times.

Mine didn't work until I did jumping jacks in the middle of the freeway with it

don't listen to justin. he doesn't know the difference between an iphone and a nano.

to activate the microphone, do some disco moves to Stayin' Alive by the Bee-Gees. if you can't, call AT&T and a represenative will assist you.

You need to purchase an external microphone in order to use one with the 2g. Apple sells an expensive one, or you could try one from here (http://www.target.com/Philips-iPhone-Microphone-Adapter/dp/B0015C5CSM/sr=1-1/qid=1223428604/ref=sr_1_1/601-7483339-4237750?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k:phillips%20iphone&page=1) for $9.99. There are a few different options.

Most if these suggestions are proven to work but not certified. The real method is to eat the iPod and regurgitate it. Place the regurgitated iPod on a plate and microwave it for 2 minutes and 26 seconds. Remove the iPod from the microwave and place it on the floor. Then sit on your device and fart several times. Next, bash your iPod into your head repeatedly for about two minutes. When completed, you should be able to use the mic. If it doesn't work, then bash it into your head again for a while. That, my friends, is the solution.
This was posted from my iPod by the awesome power of my microphone. Just follow those easy steps to be just like me!

I feel sorry for the topic starter. Anyways iPod Touch 2nd gen does not have a built-in mic.

I have them and they are nice. I am satisfied with the sound-quality, similar to my previous Sennheiser in-ears. The mic is ok for simple notes to yourself but don't expect to record a concert or something with them. :) The remote is easy to use and also very tiny, so it does not get in the way. What I don't like is that both earphone-cables are the same length. I rather have one of them a bit longer so that you can mount it behind your neck... still, I like them a lot.

besides VOIP, what's the point? doesn't it also take away a little of the portability?

Let the hooker hold your iPod then hit the hooker with a baseball bat approximately 2.25 times. The mic will turn on.

What someone needs to come out with is a small mic that plugs in the dock connector. There is such a thing for jailbroken touches. I have a Shure MPA and it works very well but i don't like having to deal with the extra cable.

One of the things on my wish list for the next version of the touch is a built in mic...
