View Full Version : Complete noob to jailbreaking

I've had my 3G for half a year now and I'm interested in jailbreaking it. I've seen some of the themes and apps available for jailbroken phones and I've become convinced I should try it. I've been doing some reading and I found blackrain and a tutorial for using it to jailbreak my phone. Curious as to what else I should know? Some specific things I'm interested in learning about are...
Where to download themes and how can I go about creating my own? I love creating themes for windows, blackbox etc. and would like to make iphone themes. Do the themes use any extra resources compared to the stock theme?
Interested in emulators so I can carry around my favorite NES and SNES games that I own. If it's okay to discuss this here that is, if not I apologize.
What are some recommended apps for jailbroken phones not available for stock iphones? Specifically I know I want an app to kill background processes, one to blacklist phone numbers (I know this already exists) and a video player with multiple format support would be great.
What risks are there associated with the process of jailbreaking?
Is there anyway I can use a jailbroken iphone like my old iriver mp3 player, in that I can plus it into my computer, open up a folder in explorer, drag music to it, then listen to it? I loathe itunes.
Can I still use the appstore with a jailbroken phone? I've heard you can get apps for free with a jailbroken phone, but i'd still like to pay for them, because I want to support the developers and I think they charge very reasonable prices.

Hi there!
- You can download themes in Cydia, and as creating them isn't easy, I suggest you to use the ones you can simply download - there are lots!
- There are emulators you can download from Cydia too.
- For killing background apps, I suggest you to get SBSettings, but sadly I don't know about the blacklist and the videoplayer one.
- There aren't any risks, you can always restore your phone if something went wrong.
- You can use SSH to put files into your phone, but using iTunes is still suggested.
- Yes, sure you can! Also, you can get free apps when jailbroken, but that is stealing and illegal. It's good to see, that someone wants to jailbreak for other reasons.
Good luck! :)

Might as well ask here, can you jailbreak an iPod Touch and how do you know if it's a 3G or 2G iPod Touch?
I got mine two weeks ago so I presumed it's 3G.

A) Kerrby: you can jailbreak anything really, there is no difference between iPod Touch and iPhones other than the .ispw files.
B) draxx:
-Winterboard is your friend for themes and all that pretty stuff
-I will only mention that there is an emulator but I don't wanna get banhammered for something considered as piracy.
-There is an all-in-one video player now by the name of vlc4iphone which, as you may guessed, is VLC for the ipod/iphone
-agree with Balu'. Leave music for iTunes to handle. I mod bits and pieces but I do not touch the music.
-yes there is free apps as Balu' stated but I again will not mention how, there are links how to do this so look there instead.
-As far as I have tested, there is no risks with jailbreaking. I have tried blackrain and quickpwn with varying degrees of options and none have "bricked" my ipod as many believe. If you get an error it is likely your fault.

Awesome, how exactly would you return your iPod Touch back to normal if you wanted to undo the jailbreaking?

Restore it with the regular firmware.

Restore it with the regular firmware.
Is there an option to do it through the iPod Touch itself or do I have to do it through iTunes?

not to mention there is a guy out there that has fake sites that appear in search results. hes trying to stop pirates by getting them to disclose info on his fake site.

If you look at the iTunes window for your iPod, usually when you connect it to a computer, there under the "Update" button is a lovely button that says "Restore"! This magical button will use the ispw (OS) of the official apple site, 3.1.2 latest, and will erase all traces of jailbreakage. Warning: There is a way for Apple to see IF you jailbreaked but that only really happens if the Apple Genius either A) Knows you and really hates you B) Came before and was told to show the iPod(which is stupid of you) or C) The person is a complete paranoid nutcase who thinks that every ipod in existence is jailbreaked including the persons own ipod. If you get this kind of person, find another store. Really.

Hi guys,
Just to add on that thread. If one jailbreaks, can one run the already paid apps?
I mean, I have a lots of apps and if I decided to jailbreak, can I keep all the apps that I have? Do I have to re-install them? Am I going to lose all m saved games?
I applaude the reason for jailbreaking and still buying apps. I think jailbreak allows more customization, that is the point for me. But I would only do based on the questions that I made above.
Looking for answers...

you wont lose anything if you use blackra1n or other jailbroken divices but if you restore you lose everything including your jailbroken apps (including cydia and everything else) if you want to update use this vid:

Your paid apps aren't affected at all.
You can still use iTunes to backup and restore your apps, whether the device is jailbroken or not. iTunes won't backup or restore anything from Cydia, so if you restore your device to its previous state, you'll lose those apps.
After upgrading from 2.1 to 3.1.2, I didn't need to restore any apps- everything remained intact during the upgrade. However, I would recommend backing up your apps to iTunes, just in case.

How come there's only tethered version of jailbreaking for the iPod Touch?
Every video on YouTube I've seen of the 3.1.2 firmware says it's a tethered version and you have to have your iPod Touch connected to a computer otherwise your Touch won't run or something.

Wait, so there are no consequences whatsoever? Is there any way for Apple to find out? And if they do what will they do about it?

You can make your iPhone/iPod Touch unique among others once jailbroken. Battery might drained much and performance might slow down if heavy theming is used.

That used to be true, but I'm not sure it is anymore.

NO. Blackra1n just requires that you connect your iPod/iPhone to the computer so it can install the blackra1n app. The only reason other than music and app syncing is for SSH stuff.
On the note of theming. Yes it will use up more juice if you are like me with http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/500x_35817228_copy-1.jpg
Or you have backgrounder.
Amazing that this thread has gone this long.
