View Full Version : Mommy, where do games come from?

I've seen these kinds of threads in the past, and it is always a blast for gamers to see a tiny glimpse of where the games they play came from.

Too add a human element to iPhone Games I propose that devs come out of the shadows and post a picture of themselves (optionally) and their work space!

I'll start.

Nah, it's the Honey Bunches of Oats! That cereal is the best :D

Anyway, yeah that's pretty cool seeing where you developed your games. :) Is that like an office away from home or is it in your home? I think it'd be pretty cool and just decide when you want to start developing for the day. No having to drive to work and you can get up whenever you want. ;)

Yeah, that pic is on top of Haleakala on our honeymoon (place is amazing). I've been running in Diet Coke lately and make numerous trips to Carls to refuel. The workspace is part of a larger office that an old co-worker of mine works in, but he recently took another job so I'm looking for a new space to rent :( I've been working on my couch / dining room table lately and it just isn't cutting it (plus I hate being devoid of human contact all day)!

I picture little white bear studios working in a cabin nestled away in the mountains but I'm probably way off :)

I did the concept for Pigs a Pop'n and I'm the CEO of the company. My business partner, Sherri, is the designer of Mystic Jewels and BounceTrap. She is also an expert on Casino games.

I've been in the video game business since the dawn of time.

I don't know how feasible an iphone port would be, but I'd gladly cough up the dough for it

Cool Idea. I present (most) of the Veiled Games team.

This picture is taken in our modest office in scenic New Zealand. We're an American company, but we work out of New Zealand. This is the place that such wonders as Payday Roulette and Up There were created.

That's me (Evan) in the foreground, I do lead design, art, and business development... I'm the face of Veiled Games, and the guy who keeps up the blog and Twitter. Also CEO.

In the Background is Jeff, code genius. He's the guy who makes my pretty pictures actually do something worthwhile. He's damned good at it to. Did you know jeff got Up There to run at a target of 60 fps, where most games shoot for 30? That still amazes me. He's VP.

Not pictured is Secretary of Veiled Games, Ellen. She's not a secretary in the answering phones sense... but secretary in the secretary of a corporation sense. She runs the business, because I have no idea how all that stuff works.

Or our Lawyer, but who wants to see him?

Or Sam... Sam is second on code with Jeff. Great guy, very quiet. Hard to notice.

That's the family!

I lent my brother my my Camera for his trip to Mexico, so I have to refer to some archived pictures.

Here's where I work.

This photo is actually out of date (http://junk.mikekasprzak.com/photo/SykStudio/2008/12-December/DeskPhotoBefore.jpg), as one of the 19" monitors has since died, and I've upgraded some of my audio gear (http://junk.mikekasprzak.com/photo/SykStudio/2008/12-December/MOTUInAction.jpg). Me and my husband Jesse - we are both software developers and owners of Wasted Pixel, developers of Gemmed!

We are now using our office as storage (more like "I'll take care of this later" pile). We both have laptops, so we are using our living room as our office. It doesn't look pretty but that's all we do all day: work at our computers. And the living room is more spacious, closer to the kitchen and the bathrooms, and has a big screen TV - so it works better than any of the rooms at our house :) And our mac is hooked up to our big screen TV. So our living room is far from being tidy (oh we eat in the living room as well - either while still working, or on the coffee table while watching TV) - whenever we have a visitor we quickly tidy up the room, but our "I'll take care of this later" pile grows even bigger.

I'll post a picture of our living room/office after one of those visits - then I'll be less embarrassed sharing it :p

You should have seen our first office ;) It used to be a little store of some sort. It was about 15 m2 and we were three people at the time sharing the small space. We had three desks there, our laptops and a coffee machine, and it was pretty perfect since we got to use it for free. Plus, I lived about 150 m from there so the commute was about 2 min by foot!

There was no toilet, but instead you had to walk about 100 m and walk down to a basement and utilize a small toilet there there.

And here are three of the people from the Iron Will Studios team at the little office we have in Ipswich, Suffolk, England (I'll see if I can get pictures of everyone else in due course) :

In order of appearance, top left, Jason Turner - our Graphical Whizz, seen here creating the Jump Gates for in game. He has been responsible for all of the graphics in game to date - he often builds things in 3D then takes pictures of them as it's faster than pixel pushing them in photo shop. (lots of screenies on the Outer Empires website).

Top right, me, working hard (Ok, so I'm probably talking to one of the beta testers in game) - note the cool KingdomGame poster in the background! :) I work on the back end and middle layer of the game (database, servers) and also the browser front end mainly. Uniquely for this game we're making the same gameplay available from both the iPhone and the Browser in the same universe.

And Bottom Left, Susie Rowland working on the iPhone version of the game... although this is clearly a staged shot and she has just opened the app to make it look like she's doing something ;) She works primarily on the iPhone version but also does some of the database bits at the back end too.

If you want to know a little more about the game we're currently developing check out http://www.outer-empires.com - it's a space based MMO, set in a huge universe of 20k star systems.. you can set up your own colonies, do jobs to earn credits, build and customise ships and their modifications, take over system, be a part of a faction (player run/made), amongst a whole lot of other stuff... :) EDIT : I should've said, this isn't an imobster type vampire clone.. bah, here's the video, it'll be easier.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GMAqX56DCRc&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GMAqX56DCRc&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
