Real racing was supposed to be this super sick racing game, but where is it at? They said at firemint it would be out in the end of 08, but it's not out.

No, it wasn't... If you go to www.firemint.com, you'll see that the game is still under development for both iPhone and N-Gage... Apparently they haven't found a publisher yet :/

Maybe they should talk with Neil Young at Ngmoco and see if they would publish the game for them...

When they say HD graphics, do they just mean high-res/quality?
Looks interesting, a bit different to others on iphone as it appears to be a track racer rather than city streets. But then again, vid seems to suggest this to be another arcade style racer. The online play and Youtube vids sound interesting though.

We had PLENTY of interest from publishers ;) But in the end we decided to self-publish, we think this is going to be the most awesome game and we wanted to retain complete control over where we take it. We'll be releasing more details soon, so check this page:

Don't know if you already have seen it, but just received some update with new youtube video link from Firemint, we have a detailled news on our Blog (but only in German). So anywhere, here is the link to the new video with some explanation and details from the game itself, like fully animated cockpit view, ai of other drivers, steering, car classes and much more.

Because the game is still in development, there are still a bunch of details we haven't announced yet, and price is one of them - the release date is another :) We are going to release more information soon so stay tuned!
Nice looking video, will there be a lite version? :)

In the video there, you look like you're going quite slow. Do you have a sense of speed when driving?
I don't like that the road bends have jagged edges and lines. Otherwise, fantastic.
Please Firemint please add the ability to steer with onscreen buttons like Asphalt. Sometimes these controls are better when you just can't be twisting the iphone side to side to steer (like on the bus of sitting next to people.
All car racing games should have both motion and touch steering options. :D

The sense of speed seems to be problematic. The car in the video drives at about 200 miles or kilometers per hour and it does not look like that. This must not make it a bad game, but it looks that Fastlane will stay the only game with a real sense of speed on the iPhone.

We've just released a new video which shows a little bit of the YouTube integration - you can upload a replay of your laps with TV-style camera angles. We are also building a special web site for showing off your videos, lap times etc. We'll be saying more about these kinds of features as we get closer to release... (no official date yet, sorry!)

You can watch it in HD although I've noticed bandwidth or YouTube sometimes can't keep up with those, so it may look choppy :)

We agree! We have several control schemes so people can pick the one they like best, or the best one for the situation :) Touch steering is in there. The guys have also done an amazing job on the accelerometer controls - you can play it upside down lying in bed if you want.

i sure hope my suggestion make it. the one i want the most is not being tied to the ground. i want to be able to get some air but with realistic physics.

That's great to hear, and sorry I took so long to reply.
When you say you have Touch Steering like Asphalt 4, what do you mean? In addition to tilting, Asphalt 4 had [b]two[/ib] types of touch steering:
1) Hotspots. Tap left side of screen to turn left, tap right to turn right.
2) Virtual wheel. Hold finger on wheel and turn it to steer.
Do you have only type, or both types of touch steering?
Also, when tilting for driving, how do you handle the ingame horizon? Does it tilt when you tilt the idevice? Or does it stay horizontal and level even as the ingamecar turns as you tilt the iPhone, keeping you the player orientated?

I am really looking forward to this game.
I have The Fast and the Furious: Pink Slip and that is so much fun, I really enjoy that.
It will be interesting to see if this stacks up to NFS, it certainly looks like a strong contendor

Those are excellent questions, you obviously know your racing games! You're not a developer are you? ;) As you know we are still polishing so unfortunately we can't go into too much detail now, in case things are tweaked later... but I'll see if I can get one of the coders to do an interview closer to release!

1. Note the variable touch screen options are also present in Gameloft's Ferrari as well.
2. The horizon tilt/no tilt option was a subject of debate with Fastlane Street Racing, and was incorporated in their most recent large update.

I disagree, I think the speed looks awesome. My opinion anyways. Can't wait to see the actual game!
GDC 2009: Real Racing Hands-On
http://www.slidetoplay.com/story/gdc-2009-real-racing-hands-on
We met up with Firemint's Robert Murray and Alex Peters earlier today to go hands-on with the Aussie developer's hotly anticipated Real Racing, which we've covered extensively on the site. Let us say this right off the bat: this superlative racer is going to set some new benchmarks for the genre when it comes out later in April.
When we met with Murray and Peters, they were fresh off a big win for "Best Technical Achievement" at the IGF Mobile awards. It was richly deserved. Real Racing has been in development for a full year, and the level of technical prowess on display in this game is off the charts, from the core racing itself to its many connected features.
There are four major game modes on offer in Real Racing. The Career mode is a standard one-player game where you race through nine championships across 12 tracks, over three car classes: hatchbacks, sedans, and muscle cars. There are also three racing divisions on top of that (A, B, and C). Murray explained that the car classes act as a difficulty gradient for the game's controls, while the AI racers become more skilled as you move up in the divisions.
After the Quick Race, there is also a Time Challenge mode, where you can compete for times on a global leaderboard, and can spit out your best laps directly to your YouTube account.
Then there's Connected mode, which introduces asynchronous league play. It works something like this. First, players join a Firemint-created online league. They are then required to race a certain number of laps within a deadline--say, four laps within 48 hours. They earn points depending on their performance, and their totals dictate whether they move up or down in the online divisional structure; it's not unlike the European sports leagues that shuffle teams between upper and lower competitive tiers.
Sounds cool, yeah? We haven't even gotten to the racing yet. There are 36 unlockable cars in Real Racing, and although we only got to drive a single turbocharged hatchback during our preview, it was enough to see that the game has great physics.
You can switch brake and acceleration assistance on and off to your liking; we had fun just steering the car around corners, as the AI smoothly braked to keep us on the right racing line. There's plenty of visual feedback from the cockpit view, where the driver turns the wheel and shifts up and down. The camera also bobs slightly in the direction of the turn to heighten the sense of realistic motion.
And man, is this game pretty. The frame rate's great. The car models look fantastic, with a semi-reflective sheen in the paint jobs. There are neat lighting effects, like when you drive through a forest and light filters through the trees. And the sound is a huge asset. These engines give off a visceral roar--sweet music to the ears of car freaks--and the background is peppered with little noises, like the wind whistling across the hood and the clunk of the gearbox.
There's more we could say about Real Racing. We could go on about the multiple camera views, or the built-in Facebook functionality... but we're just going to let our video do the talking, after we're through editing it. Suffice it to say that Real Racing made a big impression on us, and we can't wait to play the full game in about a month.

I asked Firemint for confirmation on a price and the response was
"We haven't announced pricing details yet and in fact we haven't decided yet exactly what the price will be. I'll be sending out another email when we have set a price!"
Stay tuned I guess! :D

There's still a bit of 'pop up' ey? But definitely not as bad as Fastlane, so I guess it's just the hardware limitation?
Also, will there be street racing or is everything on circuit?

Whoever was playing that video was dirty at the end there, ramming the opponent just before the finish line.
The game looks damn amazing for what the iPhone can produce, and things will only improve from here on out.

Couple of observations from that GDC video....
1. The speedo says MPH and the car said up to 270 ... i think that should have been KPH
2. Possible to put a very simple shadow under the car (even if its almost static) just makes the cars not look like they're floating so much..
Other than that cannot wait! Framerate looks like its a solid 30+ and no glitches so you've done a superb job there
