View Full Version : Can't Jailbreak a New 3GS?

I plan on getting a new 16gb 3GS from AT&T. I read on another forum that I'll only be able to do a "tethered jailbreak", and I'll have to re-jailbreak it every time I start the phone. Is there another, less popular, option with a permanent jailbreak? Or should I try my best to keep my phone charged?

If I do have to rejailbreak, does this mean reinstalling apps? Will my jailbroken/Cydia apps work before I get a chance to do another jailbreak?

Are the new 3Gs's on a new firmware or something? I bought a 3gs in November on 3.1.2, and jailbreaked just fine (non tethered) using blackra1n.

New iPhone 3GS's are being shipped with a new bootrom and have to be tethered jailbreak.

Wow really!? That's a bummer :( Glad I made it in before the cutoff...

I've been a little surprised by the Dev team lately. Wasn't impressed with their Mac-only jailbreak of 3.1.x... had to rely on Geohot to jailbreak plus it seems there were issues with using Quickpwn on iphone 3g's (gpSPhone wouldn't work unless you ran blackra1n over the quickpwn jb). If new 3gs's are being shipped with a new bootrom that makes an untethered jailbreak impossible, I'm surprised not to hear anything from the Dev team to address this.

If I do have to keep rejailbreaking, how will that affect the apps and data within them?

I have no idea really. From what I hear, you only need to re-jailbreak it when you turn it on/off...? So I guess if you left it on all the time it would be okay.. although I try to reboot my device every so often to 'clean things up' or whatever...

If you're using blackra1n i think/hope it should be relatively not too painful. I think when you use blackra1n you don't need to restore your device or anything, so hopefully the apps and data will be okay.

Hopefully someone who knows more or has firsthand experience can offer some better info for you.

I don't have firsthand experience with tethered jailbreaks either sorry.

But I think you only need ot have the device plugged into the computer to turn it on. But not sure.

If you leave it on all the time, you won't notice it :p

jb w/ blackra1n
its tethered so you need to run blackra1n every time you shut off your ipod and turn it back on

you dont lose any data whatsoever

Thanks...just one more question, say I'm at the bar and my phone freezes, and I restart it, I understand the data's saved but can I still run the apps and hacks or am I stuck with the "official" apps and settings until I can get home and rejailbreak?

you get in to recovery mode every reboot, so you cant use any apps until you rejailbreak

Ok, here's how it works (I have a tethered 3G Touch)

If you turn off your phone, you can't turn it back on without running Blackra1n again. That's it. You keep all of your data etc, you just can't turn it back on without Blackra1n.

I often carry a charger cable with me so that if I'm running low on juice and I'm near a computer I just plug it in.

I apse have a good memory freeing program so I never have to restarting to free memory.

Edit: Stupid iPod speel check :p

Guess I'll just get a portable and car charger. It'll be like the movie Speed, I can't let my battery go below a certain level, lol...

Hope someone finds a permanent hack soon after I get one.

I hope so too. This is not good news for next gen devices moving forward.

There are some really good portable chargers you can get for decent deals. I have a discontinued APC portable charger that I got on Amazon for about $20 and it works well. When fully charged, it will fully charge my iPhone about 1.25-1.5x. I also have a Mophie Juice Pack Air, which is a combination case and charger. it's nice because obviously it's a case and you don't need to deal with holding 2 things and a cord, but you will only get about 0.8-1 full charge on your phone, when the Pack is fully charged.

According to HowardForums, he's been on and off with whether or not he's gonna do the untethered jailbreak, based off his tweets. Someone who claimed to be an insider on the same site said that it may be out around Xmas. So much speculation....

Someone on Hofo had a great idea of getting a refurbished 3Gs because it's likely to be pre-week 40. His was. What are the odds of getting a refurbished phone made after week 40?

very slim, since apple needs to repair the stuff and repackage and stuff

Thanks, I got this and similar advice on another board so I went ahead and got it. I'm praying it's pre-week 40. That would just be perfect.

So if I bought my 64GB Touch on opening day, it would need a tethered jailbreak, correct? Or was there another point in time where the switch happened?

I have that charger and it is a piece of crap. When my iPhone 3GS is connected to it it does charge, but the touchscreen goes crazy, with taps not registering where you tap but somewhere else etc. Monoprice is a great place to by basic video cables, but you have to be wary about anything else there. Some of it is OK, and some of it is not. I've got both the crappy iPhone/iPod charger and a crappy Xbox 360 VGA cable, both of which I wish I'd never bought.

Devices loaded with the new boot ROM started shipping the first week of October 2009. Any device purchased prior to the first week of October will not need to worry about a tethered jailbreak.

Has anyone else found more info about this? I JUST got my 3GS today, and I was surprised that it's tethered... My mom and her boyfriend's isn't, though. :'(

You won't be able to do a proper jailbreak, if that's what you're wondering.

Just make sure you don't restore via iTunes after you restart your iPhone, you have to run blackra1n or else you will get a error 9 and have to send it to apple to get it fixed

Man, reading over this made me really glad that my 3GS is one of the older ones. Hopefully the dev team fixes this soon!

Ok so I just did it for fun last night with BlackRa1n and it was jailbroken in like 45 seconds. I installed Cydia which didn't take long either, and then Winterboard and a few other things.

It was all very easy, and I don't need to plug it into a computer to restart it. I did have a problem with my alarm this morning; it was going off, but the phone wouldn't "wake" and the screen wouldn't come on. After the alarm was going off for like a minute, i just had to do a hard reset.

So far so good though! Mine is week 23 or something
