Mouse About - $3 AppStore

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=290142987&mt=8

This has to be the most overlooked game on the app store. I can't believe it completely went under the radar like it did, I actually only heard of it because of an article ign.com just did about overcrowding on the app store (which I personally found to be slightly exagerated).

However, they are right about it being a shame that this game somehow managed to escape any attention. I downloaded it this morning after reading the article and am completely addicted.

The basic premise is that you are a mouse that likes to eat food, you can move either up, down, left, or right, and then the mouse keeps moving until it touches a piece of food to eat. If there is no object or food in the direction that you sent the mouse, the mouse will run completely off screen into the clutches of a cat that likes to eat mice and thus costing you a life.

The trick is of course that there is a certain order in which you have to eat the various pieces of food in order to collect them all without sending the mouse off of the stage. There are also random objects thrown in some stages that you can send your mouse to, to keep him safe and obtain a better position to eat more food. The puzzles are randomly generated but there is still a sense of normal progression, as in the difficulty seems to increase naturally as you move forward despite the fact that the puzzles are random, and after you clear a certain amount of levels, you progress to different "worlds" that have new graphics, different types of food, and new objects. Each world becoming progressivly more challanging.

The control couldn't be more perfect, and is some of the best use of touchscreen as a gameplay mechanic I've seen yet. All you do is swipe the direction you want the mouse to run. Simple. There is no designated area on the screen you have to use, just swipe in any direction anywhere on the screen. The input is incredibly responsive, I have not had any delay or incorrect movement accidentally registered in the couple of hours I've played it so far. Very fluid.

The presentation is also very solid, high quality colorful graphics, simple yet catchy music, and nice (non standard UI copied) menus. Everything about it is very polished, which again makes me surprised that it didn't get noticed by the general public. This is a game with the same spit and shine as all the big boys. Not to mention the $3 price is just right, especially considering the replay value inherent with it's randomly generated puzzles.

If I were to have one complaint it would be that there is a bit of a delay between the time you hit the app icon on your iphone and when you actually start playing the game. It has two brief splash screens, which isn't a big deal, but it also has a loading screen that takes a bit of time, possibly 20 seconds or so. Though, I'm assuming that the loading may be the time it takes to generate the set of puzzles for the game, however, to make sure that once the game starts the new puzzles load up instantly even though they are all unique for your current game session.

All in all, I've tried around 100 games in the app store, and I'd probably place this somewhere in the top 10. For $3 it is a steal. Hopefully a toucharcade writer will read this and check it out and review it for the site, I would hate for people to miss out on this game simply because they never knew it existed.

Hmmm. Stop reviewing your own App Mr. Developer. :P

well I pretty much did the same thing as the OP did. It is a very well made game. Probably didn't get as much attention as it deserved.

wow, great review. I have to say this is the first time that I am hearing about this game. But after reading your review I have to say I might considering purchasing it.

Thanks for the info on the game. I purchased it and I must say that I'm pleased that I did. The game play and graphics are done well, and the soundtrack makes me wonder if Danny Elfman had a hand in the making of it. Good recommendation!

It is a very nice game and well deserving of your download. I have played this a lot and its has more game-play than some bigger name games. Good value!

I saw the same article on IGN a while back and purchased Mouse About as a result. It's the best money I've spent on an app so far. Clearly a labor of love for the Cobra Mobile team.

Cobra are the kind of development house the user community need to make sure stays around. Quality all the way through this little gem!

If we want quality stuff, it's up to us to make sure when something like this slips under the radar (and never sees the coveted App store home screen) we keep the buzz up (if for no other reason than we turn each other on to more of these "hidden gems") Try it out and tell your friends if you like it.

Vote with your dollars people, we've all probably wasted ten times what this game costs on other junky apps we wish we could return. This one is a keeper.

Cheers,

Rich

It is a very well polished game. I'll probably post something about it this weekend.

I knew what this would be like quickly think of the path banging against objects and having food stop you. Did I bite? ...no cuz for $3 didn't want to take the chance and get burned once again. Then the free lite version (http://toucharcade.com/link/http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=294225028&mt=8) with 15 levels came out. And hot dog I'm impressed. If it was just a black dot hitting circles with UNLIMTED levels I'd say that's worth $1. Worth $2 since it has such nice polish and graphics to it.

So then they drop the price to $3 from $2 and then from $2 to $1 Mouse About (http://toucharcade.com/link/http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=290142987&mt=8). I'd say it's worth $1 no brainer. I hope it doesn't go back up to $3 though. $2 though I can definitely recommend it though. Get it while it's a $1 though if you like quick action thinking path games.

Yes I like this game too. It is very polished as everyone has said. however, ideally I would like more time to plan my moves, even if that's just on the early levels. Great otherwise.

I just tried the free version and I put the game into the list of most polished games currently available. It's from the same dev than Numba, which is also very polished. I really love the comic graphics, music and the animations which are just about everywhere. This game is great and I will out it on my buying list for november.

This thread hasn't seen the light of day since November? Come on now, this game is better than most of the current ones out there. I agree with the OP, this has to be one the most overlooked games on the app store.

Sure, it may have been released back in September, but I'm sure many newer members don't even know this game exists. I'd wager even some older members may have overlooked it too seeing as the thread has hardly more than 1 page.

Before I even got the chance to play the first level I already felt like this title was well worth the $0.99 I paid for it. The loading screens, menu, story, presentation and heck even the name input is fantastic! The game play makes it all even better and completes the package nicely. This game is well worth the asking price.

For those without this game, check out Mouse About Lite (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=294225028&mt=8) and then pick up the full version (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=290142987&mt=8).

(As of Feb 6th, this title is now $1.99)

Got this one way back when IGN did an editorial about overlooked gems in the App Store. Great title. I expected more of Low Grav because of how polished Mouse About was.

I have this game too and really like it and agree totally with wastedyuthe. There are times when I am so busy with my getting my initial plan decided and then I'm almost out of time. I love the levels under the water when the mouse swims with face mask and flippers.

I totally agree with that sentiment.
Mouse About, pretty much great in every way.
Low Grav, meh at best. Was totally missing that same sense of polish and "love" that was put into Mouse About.

I wish I had seen this yesterday, the price just went up to $1.99.

For some reason the $0.99 price point is the magic number for me. Anything above it, I really have to "love" the game (like Warfare Inc. or Real Soccer or Diner Dash) in the sense it needs wifi or a campaign mode, etc.

If it drops back to $0.99 I'm picking it up.

This is one of my favorite games. Defintely one of my favorite early games from the app store. I don't mind the short amount of time, it adds to the challenge. The only thing I wish they would add is global high scores. I guess we could post our scores here. Mine is 147,900.

The game is eaisly worth $1.99.

Great game.

Hmmm. Maybe I should start an "overlooked" thread.

Or is there one already? There is one already.

Your favorite games that no one mentions (http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=4139&page=9#86)

One of the games that I have had longest on my phone. Others come and go, but one with this much spit and polish I just can't get rid of.

has anyone else downloaded this just today for the first time?

I did and the game won't launch. Yes I restarted...many times...and uninstalled/reinstalled.

I'm on a 3GS with 3.1.3

3G 3.1.3 runs fine. Cute puzzle game. Good controls. Had a nice time for some minutes. Adventure cinema soundtrack. And the first & only iPhotch app as far as I know with an Exit switch (quits to homescreen without home button). ;)

Thanks for making it free. Easily worth some money. Will pick Mouse About up again for sure.

OK, after some further digging...

It turns out that launching from Spotlight brings an immediate crash.

I moved the app onto a visible page and it launched just fine.

Wow, such a great little game! Another freebie that I will be keeping for a longggg time.

I do wish there was an easy mode with more time and/or an unlimited time mode.

The game is a lot like Fling!, but Fling! does get a higher mark for more modes.

Wow, I saw the message come up about the free deal and by the time I could get my phone, about 45 minutes, it was gone. In fact the opening page still says 'free' but when you open the game it's $.99. Come on, give us a break!

One of my favorite puzzle games.

Did the update make it harder or I'm just rusty?

Seems to have made it harder, which I dont like. If your going to make an old game harder, do it by adding a difficulty level, not by making your sole difficulty level harder!
