The article doesn't particulary start off well:
"If you own an iPhone and you're fairly technical, then you've no doubt gone through the steps necessary to "jailbreak" your iPhone "
Oh come on, how many people, even those 'fairly technical' (whatever that means) have a jailbroken phone? I'll bet it's no more than 5%.

Considering some reports put iPhone piracy at 30-40% (and higher, depending on the visibility of the pirated app), I'd say more than 5%.

You highly underestimate the size of the jailbreak community, there is quite a large base of users.

Honestly i just want themes. Unless they make the touch incredibly slow, which i heard they do.

I have an iPod Touch, and most benefits on that article are intended for iPhone users. I just don't see why it's worth the effort to jailbreak, losing my saved games, losing the warranty, just so I can have a custom wallpapers and some extra pirated games/apps.

The biggest thing for me, is the ability to finally send and receive picture messages.

yea, how does Apple not have a way to detect if you have hacked your iPhone, even if you restore it before taking it in? At the store they can see how many apps have crashed, what apps they were, etc. How does their system not realize the device's software has been modified at all?

Jailbreaking does NOT void the warranty. You just restore and thats it. If you are using cracked apps then erase them all and download some free from the App store and thats it, dont send your phone, ipod with a theme and all of that. THey wont find out.
On another note, there are more than 300.000 users using a jailbroken ipod. The site where you get the cracked apps gets 250.000 unique visitors a day. That shows that there are way more people with jailbroken devices.
ANd jailbreaking does not make the device slow. What makes it slow its all the crap that you put into it. I only have two themes and some apps from cydia, plus the games and several movies, it takes like 2 minute to restart but thats ok, i like everything i have on it. Plus i have 4000 songs on it lol. I got to delete a lot.

The only thing I miss from having my 3G jailbroken, was the ability to have homescreen wallpapers, and a transparent dock. Everything else was 'meh'.

Being told I "have" to jailbreak is much the same as being told I'm not allowed to jailbreak, in my eyes.
Someone should write a new article, "Jailbreak or not, who cares it's your iPhone/Touch do what you will".

Nobody is putting you in a headlock and forcing you to do anything. If you want a restricted device that is capable of so much more then knock yourself out.

As exciting as custom themes are, I'm sufficiently satisfied with the product as Apple has supplied it. To each their own I say!

So far, there are just a few things for which I would jailbreak (and jailbroke on 1.1.x):
- last.fm live background scrobbling
- Gameboy emulator (Donkey Kong Country!)
- Gameboy Advance emulator (Fire Emblem! Advance Wars!)
But I'm also not interesting in having to fiddle with SSH which starts up every time, lower battery life regarding to this SSH thing, more crashes regarding lower memory, games not working because of detecting the jailbreak etc. Also, if you take a look what really happens when you jailbreak the iPhone technically, that's nothing I want to do ;).

Just for a slightly different perspective, a friend of mine has a jail broken iphone, mostly for emulators, phone improvements (as mentioned above) and useful apps he can download.
He doesn't download anything from the app store, (neither paid nor free) and he doesn't download pirated games/apps either.
There's quite a lot of different uses for these touchscreen things! :)

Thanks for using my gpSPhone app! I hope you like it. I will be updating it again soon. I need to fix that refresh rate of the screen issue. :)

1. SSH is not that hard at all.
2. NO SSH DOES NOT LOWER YOUR BATTERY LIFE
3. All games work. they dont detect the jailbreak. if you could name me 1 game that has this issue i would be suprised.
4. it gives you so much more than what you listed. the emulators are great but there are also themes, FREE TETHERING with your laptop, ability to run apps in the background, and plenty more things that im sure you wouldnt know about because you simply havent had the experience of jailbreaking. Also, there is almost a 0% chance of anything happening to your iphone. jailbreaking nowadays is as easy as it gets.

Before the App store even existed, I had a jailbroken Touch. I cleaned it up to download apps, figuring that there would be soo much I could do with the new Apps - and there is. But Apple does impose some limitations, and some people don't like that. Jailbreaking is simply a way around that.
Anyone who wants their iDevice to look just how *they* want it to look, jailbreaking will let them. For people who simply want to do *more* with their iDevice, jailbreaking will let them do that, too. (Seriously, check out Intelliscreen - why Apple didn't implement this, I have no idea!)
For the record, jailbreaking does not slow down your device, nor do you have to SSH, ever (at least on a Mac).
