It's only $5.99, and Payback isn't due for a bit yet. By the time Payback rolls around you'll be either deep into this game or finished with it.

Payback comes out tomorrow.

Yeah...I just saw that thread. :o

Regardless, I say get both. I mean, honestly, both together costs less than games on DS and PSP and other systems. Might as well....

You are absolutely correct, but after months of living by that theory I've begun to realize games I can, and can't live without, and the negative affects on a bank account an endless supply of great games can have. While I'm sure this game has excellant graphics, and a great story with some cool bosses, I'm looking for something a little more than running down a single path of travel and repetitive tapping a attack and defend. Is there any other weapons that require some type of aim? Bow and arrow, some type of grenade, or wicked potion that burns skin? Are there secret passages or levels that require a little bit more skill than seeing how fast you can press attack? These are the questions that keep me on edge

Firstly if you haven't got this game, pick it up now. 1 of the best on App Store thus far!! Easily the most impressive graphics i've seen and some nice hack n slash gameplay. Game (on easy) should last you about 4 hours, and then you unlock hard mode. I thought it was great value for my money (original price).

There are 5 weapons in the game if i remember correctly, all upgradeable too with points you get for killing enemies (and even more for using the cinematic kills). You can't aim them, even the bow. There are different combos for each weapon that you can learn and a special attack/magic style move too that varies between the weapons.

I have found 1 alternate route on the first level, but haven't found any more yet. PM me if you want to know how to find it. Also there are several other upgrades you collect and you can upgrade you magic/health.

i got stuck (cant move anywhere) right after i went up the temple and down by the waterfalls...

i thought i took a screenshot but i guess not.

i got stuck in the bush somewhere. i cannot move forward/backward or jump. i had to restart the game which turns out takes me all the way back to the beginning.

i guess i should have just hit home so i restart on the last checkpoint.

great game so far and EXACTLY like GoW except missing mini puzzles

I think they're doing stock clearance to make way for the sequels: with better graphics for 3G S.

I'm not sure how i feel about how the 3G S will play into the appsstore. Obviously, it's faster and is more capable, but how will developers utilize it? The touch and iphone 3g market is pretty big compared to the 3G S, I wonder how long it will take for 3G S only games to be released.

Well Hero was at $5.99 for 6 months I think. My guess..

Terminator will end it's theater run soon, a price drop on the game will probably come when the DVD is released.

AC will stay at $5.99 for a while, maybe till end of year. AC 2 will come out and if Gameloft is going to bring that sequel to the iDevice, that would be the time to drop the originals price.

Well Im thinking its all based on sales, not release date. Lets Golf was released not too long ago, and Hero of Sparta (released like September of last year) just had its sale today. So its definitely not based on release date, but profits. If no one buys Gameloft games anymore, they will have the sale sooner.

I have been known to get some really nice games at sale for just $0.99 so enjoy the game. You will easily get $0.99 out of it. Makes me want to wait a while for Castle of Magic to drop in price. I think it is worth what it is priced at currently I just like getting deals.

Do they? Any information on this on hand? Cause I mean... it would be cool to kind of get re-imbursed for that just cause it was a day later... I mean if it was a week I wouldn't be so pissed off but it just really sucks THE NEXT DAY lmao

And Castle of Magic is easily worth the 5.99 it's priced at. Best platformer EASILY on the iDevices right now. I hope they have expansion packs via in-app transactions down the road. There is more than plenty of content already, but more would be even better.

Yeah they're easily confused, though total opposites. Hero of Sparta is really nice simply in terms of graphics, sounds and control scheme, while the other is crap.
No matter how bad the game is, it's totally worth $0.99 simply from the good graphics and content. Not many 3D adventure/actions games are $0.99 in the app store. It's one of those games that is fun if you don't play it a lot, maybe once every other day or something.

I don't see them giving you a credit for that. Think about it. You bought it at $5.99 and it drops to $0.99 the next day. Do you think they are going to credit every person that bought it on that day? How far back would it go? Do they credit people that bought it two days before it went on sale cause I bet those people are just as pissed. Have some sense about it, you just missed the sale and there is nothing you can do.

If I remember in the T&C for all 3.0 upgrades it still states ALL SALES ARE FINAL.

EDIT: BTW I paid $5.99 and feel the game is worth that price. Happy days for those that get to enjoy it for just $0.99.

Yeah the price drop stuff works. If you know there's a game you want and you're willing to pay then you should be satisfied. Otherwise if you can live without the game then wait for a sale. I would have said wait to buy anything right now since 4th of July is next week in the United States. I assume there will be a bunch of sales.

I completely understand that. And I am aware that I missed the sale, albeit for a f*cking day, I still missed it. And yeah, people that bought it 2 days ago are probably pissed... but imagine how you would feel if not even a full 24 hours passes by before a sale comes along for a game you just spent, a considerable chunk of change on. You'd want to at least try and get that back if you found out you MIGHT be able to, right? Thats where I am at right now. I purchased the game about 8 or so PM Arizona time. Someone just mentioned about apple crediting returns, so I thought I would at least ask about it. I don't expect them to refund me 5 bucks, but I can at least try right? No harm in that at all. I just didnt even know they had any kind of return policy so I wanted to at least see if anyone knew anything further on it, before I inevitably have to look it up.

Easily worth a buck. It does get monotonous a tad but graphics are pretty nice and boss battles are fun. Makes you feel like your playing Elite Beat Agents without the beat at times. I don't think they have a price return policy guarantee. This isn't the Google Android phone store where every app has a 24 hour return policy for a full refund. Don't feel bad I bought NFSU for $10 and didn't get it for $7 it's current price.

There is a misconception here. Any smart company would do well to drop the price of their products to gain visibility in the top 100 in context of a huge influx of new iphone users (granted many of the 3Gs customers are repeat buyers)...

I purchased this app back when it was first released at $9.99! Nonetheless, it really was worth it because it showcased the iPhone as being a legit gaming platform.

Now at $0.99 it's really a steal. You don't see Nintendo DS games selling at this price point ;-)

Perhaps a salient difference is that Sega and EA drop their game prices incrementally while they are still visible in the top 100. An small incremental drop once a game leaves the top 100 may or may not bring it back into the top 100 (where there is the compounded factors of visibility in the app store and price point that drive sales).

How much money have you made on the app store? How much money had Gameloft made on the app store?

I am going to go with Gameloft on this one. No Offense. ;)

Or both.

This after giving all that lip service of avoiding the "race to the bottom".

Seriously, I can't understand, from a business standpoint, why they'd drop the price so drastically. Dropping price I understand. But why do it by ~40% the first time around (going from $9.99 to $5.99) and now by ~90% this time (from $5.99 to $0.99)?

Why not follow the Sega strategy of dropping in steps of 20% first time around then 25% the second time around. Super Monkey Ball, one of the more successful games in the store in terms of sales, followed this strategy, going from $9.99 down to $7.99 and then down to the current price of $5.99. Any guess where Sega will drop price to, if they do, after this? Probably by ~50% of the current $5.99 price down to $2.99. They've given themselves far more leeway and strategic room.

It's much better to drop price in small steps than drop price drastically. Quite a few of the folks that pick this game (Hero of Sparta) up now at $0.99 might have been among those who would have very well picked it up at $1.99 or even $2.99. Potential revenue missed out on again. The folks who will buy only at a buck they can get down the road. The key is to soak up as much of those willing to pay higher prices at those higher prices along the way. That's maximizing revenue potential. That's what Sega has done. EA, for the most part, has done just that as well. Gameloft looked like they would follow that very successful model, but instead they play right into the same fool's gold rush to which other developers play.

I really don't understand the publishers going that low in price that soon from a marketing and business standpoint.

As a gamer, however, I say this to my fellow gamers who haven't picked up the games yet:

Do it now. They're only a buck. Let Gameloft's apparently cocaine (cocaine is a helluva drug) fueled silliness be your ticket to good games at low prices. :D

It would be nice if Sega, Pangea and Gameloft released some sales figures plotted over time. Then there would be objective data from which this discussion could move forward. As it stands everything is theoretical based on more generic marketing principles.

I belive Gameloft has another strategy in mind. I belive that they reduced the price of HoS because aren't they supposedly creating HoS 2 right now?

Now if your getting ready to release a sequel relatively soon, I would drop the price on the original to get people "hooked" to the franchise.

Think about how many more people are going to buy the sequel now because they played and enjoyed the original. HoS 2 probably builds on the story of HoS too, so you wouldn't want to play the second one without first beating this one.

If this is the case then I think Gameloft has a good business strategy.

Well I sure as hell am not going to buy HoS 2 at $10 and probably will wait until it hits at least $2.99. Same with their other games. I have a whole list of devs that do this. I wait until Pangea's games hit $0.99 and I wait until Nimblebit's games become free. It's in general a good strategy because it will gain visibility of new iPhone owners but it's also going to hurt their initial sales of future games.

Also, EA dropped their prices quickly too on their new releases, so I don't think you can use them. Gameloft is having limited time sales rather than permanent price drops. Enjoy it while you can.

By the way, Gameloft has proven to be a very solid developer on the platform. I don't think they need any coaching on their business strategies from high schoolers and/or college students.

How much money has Sega made in the app store?

How much has EA made?

How much have the publishers following the model I've outlined?

Answer:

On individual apps, they've made more.

So, I'm going with Sega, EA, and the rest on this one. You can join hands with Gameloft, Pangea, and the rest of the publishers who've done the "race to the bottom" hula and sing the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" song instead of doing the $afety Dance if you'd like, but that doesn't mean that you're following the right trends.

No offense. ;)

There are so many games in the app store. There is so much competition that companies have to match up with their competitors. Some of these drastic price drops seem stupid to those who look at it in a logical sense. Maybe look at it this way. I assume this is how it works with revenue on games. A game is created and released for people to buy.

The first goal is for the company to make back all the money for the time put into the game, paying every person involved with it. So after that first step is done then the company wants to actually make money off it. Then finally from there the company just wants to make revenue. With games like Hero of Sparta, Asphalt 4, Let's Golf they have probably sold all the copies they are going to sell. Heroes of Sparta could have dropped to $3 and maybe made some more money, stayed off the top 100, and then be forgotten. So instead they can drop the price to $0.99 and probably sell a large amount of copies that surpasses what they would make at $3, make it to the top 100, and be able to market the company and the game. That cheap price causes customers to probably look at what other games that company has to offer. Maybe they might have other games that the customer didn't even know about. These $0.99 games for Gameloft markets for them.

Most games that don't drop in price or "set the standard" for how price drops should work don't know consumers very well. People have been screwed over for a long time in the console world. You have to pay out the butt for games that sometimes should not be the price they are. To see a price drop you have to wait sometimes longer then you want. In the app store your seeing a trend where companies can't get away with over pricing. Yes, these companies have make to money because they have families to feed, but it doesn't mean consumers have money money laying around to pay for games at high prices.

I think all these armchair business experts that come out of the woodwork when any game goes on sale are pretty amusing. Surely GameLoft, a publicly traded company with a $200 million dollar market cap, a CEO who has been around since the birth of video games, and over 4000 worldwide employees have absolutely no idea what they're doing. ;)

Well, at least it keeps things interesting, for there is otherwise little substantive value of this thread, but to bring the sale to the attention of the masses. Anyone, who enjoys iDevice gaming and doesn't already own this game, and still balks at its purchase, gets the raised eyebrow of confusion from me.

(and it's game charts we, and the devs, should be most interested in...too many foolishly, IMHO, pay too much mind to the top overall charts, where they are competing with different types of software entirely)?

Because many casual iPhone users do not bother looking any further than the top 25/50 tab on their iPhone. That tab provides the most visibility.

Anyways, enough of business!

Anyone with a 3Gs just bought this game?

How does it run?

I recall the first two stages running like molasses on my 1st gen touch, but, strangely enough thereafter running quite smoothly (even though the levels were more detailed as the game went on).

I'm downloading now. I'll leave feedback in a little with how it runs on the 3GS.

On another note, Gameloft has made $2 (HOS & Let's Golf) off of me that it probably otherwise wouldn't have.

You, and likely many millions of others since dropping the price of their games last week. Even Asphalt4 has risen from the dead to rank # 11 now.

the last 2~3 chapters are super long... if you buy game depend on number of chapters, the game can be easily chop in 16 or 32 chapters... will that make you happier... the main point is quality and gameplay... I'm give it 5 out of 5...

Well, now you can save your 99 cents, but it doesn't even can pay for a cup of coffee

Not really. EA periodically drops prices, but they've never, to my knowledge, gone below $2.99 on any of their games.

Here's another buyer at 99 cents that would never have gotten this game. It reminds me of the days of bargain bin hunting at BB/CC/TRU for video games. I would wait 1-2 years to troll the bins waiting to get a bargain on a game. With the app store, it seems that the bargains bins happen in months instead of years, and the bargains are 99 cents instead of $9.99 or $19.99. What hath Apple wrought?

Anyway...no one has answered my question on the game itself:

To those of you who have 3Gs (yes, I am jealous :p):

How does the game run?

Can you post vids?

Just played through the first couple checkpoints of the first level and it runs pretty smooth, but not buttery smooth. There's no lag, but the frame rate could definitely be higher. I'm not sure how it ran on the older devices, so it's hard to compare. If I get a chance I'll load it onto my first gen and see how they compare to each other.

Yes, I am really enjoying it. Even with the Lite I wasn't sure that I would, but I really do. Truly a great bargain. Maybe I'll buy AC once I am finished with it because I now see that I love this kind of game. Unless the later levels prove too diffcult for my poor reflexes, that is.

My Hero Of Sparta Review

I grabbed the sword from my side and swung it in front of me, defending myself from the heavy, fierce blow of the beast’s claw. I felt a sharp jab in my wrist and knew I had been struck. I winced in pain. The thunder roared across the purple sky, and was followed by a wild lightning bolt in the distance. The thunderous sounds sounded the same as the beasts roar as it leaned in closer with its mind set in finishing me off. I fell to my knees, pulled the sword behind me and pushed forward with all my might, sending the sword through the beast’s stomach. I heard a grunt emit as it toppled to the ground and closed its eyes. I stared at the sword, debating on whether to pull it out. I looked away and walked into the fields, followed by the clearing of the sky and the silence of the cold, still air.

Do you expect me to say I loved the game? Do you want me to say it was the best game I have ever played? I hope you don’t, because that is not what you are going to hear from me. This game was bought with high hopes, and those hopes, after a while of play, became hopes that I could soon get a refund. This game was not what I anticipated for it to be. The graphics may not be the most exceeding, compared to what could have been seen on other platforms, but that is not in all of their faults due to the capability of the iPhone software, but inside of me I felt they could have stepped it up a notch. To me, the music that would have fit perfectly would have to be the intense, suspenseful music from Pocket Monkey Game’s: Sparta. The controls aren’t bad, but they aren’t anything to rave about. The user interface fits the theme and basically just fits in. If you were to ask about how much fun I had playing this game, you probably wouldn’t be hearing a whole lot. The re playability is low, if it at all exists. Generally, I really did not like this game.

The presentation at first was solid, a great intro and a menu that was up to par, but the game did not really give me a whole lot to smile at. The re playability is very low, and the graphics could have been a bit better, but they are fine for the mobile gaming industry. I could have done with a different soundtrack, a more suspenseful intense beat to play to, but it fits it all-right. The controls are okay, but I felt like I was running around pounding on the same button sometimes. I give this game a 2 out of 5.

I read through iReview's review and he's basically just repeating the same few points over and over again to make it seem complex, when it's not: satisfactory graphics, so-so controls, bad music, and low replayability. I didn't find any details about how the game is played, so it's not really a useful review.
The game's controls are a bit flawed in that the character is sometimes not responsive after attacking, which makes getting hit really easy. The music is fine in my opinion; this is not an RPG, it's one of those one-button hacking games, music is not an important element. The graphics are one of the best of its genre. Replayability is low with any games of its genre, where you press one button to slash everyone while the game aims for you.
In all the game does well in its genre and definitely worth $0.99, but the genre itself makes it a play-it-once game.
