View Full Version : Best Tetris Attack Clone?

I've played a few match 3 games on the iphone and found a few that had similar core gameplay to the amazing Tetris Attack for SNES (or panel de pon or planet puzzle league) such as aurora feint and chain3, but both were missing what allowed Tetris Attack to provide an endless amount of challenge and entertainment: the vs. mode. Whether against the computer or multiplayer via wifi like in planet puzzle league on the DS (which I've never played but desperately want to) is there any game that offers some sort of versus challenge with the same match 3 gameplay, and some sort of way to attack by making long chains on the app store that I haven't found?

Search for "Rising Blocks". It's what you want.

I bought it without trying the lite version first cause it was only 99c and I trust the people on this site, and I played it for about three seconds before I wet myself in excitement at the vs mode. Thanks a lot tetrad for the heads up.

Rising Blocks without a doubt, paid $2.99 for it and it was WELL worth it!

nope, just wanted to do a little misleading there. but specifically just seeing the mini representation of the computer i'm playing against's game excited me, I was expecting just like some weird representation of how they were doing with no graphic. I only wish the multiplayer was worldwide and not limited to a common wifi, and the vs. mode had a story to go along with it with many levels, tbut this is easily the best dollar I've spend on the app store. I highly highly recommend it to anyone who has played tetris attack in the past or is a current fan of aurora feint.

Could you explain the gameplay a bit more please? This looks interesting but I don't know if I want it yet.

It's a match 3 game where you can only move pieces horizontally, and you have to match three or more pieces of the same color to destroy them while they all rise simultaneously. The depth comes from the chains that you set up by making one set of three disappearing affect the other pieces so that three more are set in a row automatically. There's an endless mode(self explanatory), a stage mode where you try to get a certain amount of points at a certain speed/difficulty, a puzzle mode, where you have only a certain amount of moves to destroy every piece on the board, and my favorite, the vs. computer mode. In this mode you play a computer who is also playing the game, whenever you make a combo of 4 or more, or create a chain of 2 or more, you create blocks that will fall on the computer's screen, as will blocks fall on your game when the computer performs well. The computer's pieces can be seen on a small mini screen to the left of your game board and it works perfectly. If you have played and had any interest in any match three game of any kind, I'd suggest taking the plunge and paying a dollar for Rising Blocks. Or you could just get the lite version to try it, but I didn't see that so it might not be a good representation of all this game has to offer. I'd definitely say buy it.

So basically its a worse version of Aurora Feint...?

Ummm. I guess if you want to think of it that way. It has no rpg elements in it, but it has a vs. mode which makes me consider it infinitely better than aurora feint. But that's probably because I'm already addicted to Tetris Attack and was looking for a straight up clone on the iPhone which Rising Blocks is.

The gameplay is nice and I'm sure versus mode is great (I remember something like this in an old Sega PC game).

However, the game graphics are way too simple. It's not polished. It needs an overhauling...

By the way, here's the link for the Rising Blocks Lite:

Embarassing self promotion but... I've made a Tetris Attack like game! From the looks of it I've gone the opposite way to Rising Blocks, tried to make it graphically polished (entirely 3D) but don't have nearly as many features yet.

You can play it free online if you've got the Unity Web Player installed.

If you're feeling generous, it's 99c on the App Store :)

Hopefully will get an updated version with more features done at some point.

I've been looking for a really polished Tetris Attack/pokemon puzzle league clone for sometime now and I haven't found it yet :-/

Out of interest, what are you looking for when you say "really polished"? Features? Graphics? Something intangible like the general "feel" of the game?

I remember TRISM was one of the first great polished puzzle games out in the app store and it really showed that the iphone could have AAA looking titles from indy developers. What I'm willing to shell out money for in a Tetris Attack is something like this http://ds.ign.com/articles/793/793768p1.html I own the game and it's one of my favorite puzzle games of all time. Of course, I'm really just dreaming though because I understand most smaller scale devs don't have time or resources (or just think it's too risky) to make a game this ambitious.

here's (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=19696379&postcount=16128) some screens of our upcoming game.

Heavily influenced by Tetris Attack (and Bust-a-Move), if you enjoy TA's chaining then you are going to be interested! I'm planning to get a teaser vid released shortly, and with some luck a Lite version (as well as the full) will be available within a couple of weeks.

As for how it plays, I'll say this - we killed ourselves to make sure to give Tetris Attack (one of my all-time favorites) a run for it's money, gameplay-wise. If you've played that game to death and need something fresh, do keep an eye out-

Oh wow thanks guys I've been looking for a game like "Rising Blocks!"

On the other hand kind of disappointed because a tetris attack clone was what we had on our "next to make" game list... I suppose there is still room for innovation and better presentation.

I'm sure I looked on the App Store for "pure" Tetris Attack like games before I started making mine and couldn't find any... now it turns out there are loads!

Since I didn't post any screenshots last time, I'll add some now with a bit more info...

Seaglass is also a very wonderful clone and I am glad to have found this as well as the ones mentioned here. Planet puzzle league (panel de pon ds with wifi) is a very nice manifestation of this game and it is great to see fans making their favorites for us in iTouch world. =)

I just released an update to Super Juicy which has multiplayer similar to Tetris Attack. I'd love to hear any feedback you have if you decide to try it out:
