View Full Version : Phoenix Wright is out! [Japanese version only]

The Phoenix Wright series has done some fantastic business on DS. The mixture of cheeky humour and slightly maddening detective work struck a rare note with a worldwide audience.

Now it's made the logical transition to iPhone - though only in Japan for now.

you have to have wifi to play?

wow........no way. stupid.

id rather a 2 gig download than that. plus it sounds like they are going to milk every penny out of you, with (probably) tiny episodes release regularly. this is now off my list :(, and i was so excited for it.

looks like i will just have to get a cheap DS down the line if i want to play this game, as this appstore version looks to have massacred the game totally and utterly.

I'm ok with the episodic content but streaming the data just seems weird for a single player game.

I agree with this part. That strikes me as penny-wise, pound foolish. The game fit on a DS cart. It can't be THAT big.

Keep in mind that used Phoenix Wright games do not lose their value. Trying to obtain a used copy can easily run you $30+. In the face of such prices, being nickeled and dimed might not be so bad.

i want this game, badly, if anything the 0.99 price makes me upset rather than happy as i know for a fact it will be a mutilated version of the game.

i would pay $20-30 for it if it was a fully working, full content, full everything that worked perfectly on ipod.

That's a buck!
You only get the first chapter for 115yen, the second chapter is an in-app purchase which costs 230yen, more chapters will be added in the future through updates.

Pretty lame strategy if you ask me, especially with the requirement of wifi/3g connection to play the game.

This is another sad proof that big game co's like Capcom, Sega, Square Enix and Namco don't take the platform seriously! I got excited over this for nothing! This is just a re-hash of the Java version that is released about a 2 or 3 years ago! Damn it!

Lame. I never got around to properly playing any of the Phoenix Wright games on DS, had this been a proper game I would have jumped at the chance to finally give it a go. As it is now... not interested.

Glad you know that without playing it.

sorry my opinion.

also my opinion comes from info that this game is split into chaptes.

therefore i do know they are going the dlc route and not giving us a full game.

therefore when I say mutiliated its is my opinion that a game like phoenix wright is being spoon fed through wifi only small chapters. is that better?

because this still sucks, and its still a massive dissapointment, will not be buying this.

Either way, I have an iPod so 3G isn't an option. Really don't see why it needs to be online in the first place. Maybe they'll change it when it releases everywhere else? I doubt it.

I think this will rely heavily on DLC. So in the end it could end up costing you $10-$20. And you need an internet connection to play it? What about ipod touches? You just killed at least half of your potential customers. How stupid can you be?

A good number of iPod Touch owners have wifi, that's why they bought an iPod Touch... anyone who bought one without any wifi access at all is an idiot, it makes the device useless.

But yeah... this sales strategy still sucks.

I don't care about expensive DLC, this game is easily worth it, as long as Capcom doesn't dare to come up with a cheap quality version. I expect DS Gameplay at the very least.

whoever said people who buy ipod touched without wifi are stupid, is stupid. (cant be bothered to find and quote the post)

"how do they get apps" um.................pc sync!!! and guess what, you do the same for updating apps......guess what....a pc+usb cable can also be used to music videos and podcasts too.

i never use wifi myself, not interested in multiplayer, and other than that there is no drawback. (and no i dont like tap tap revenge ;))

surfing web, and appstore i would rather do on my pc. (and considering i can only get wifi in my house anyway, its more practical to just sit down on the pc than use my ipod, with its inferior mobile browser.

hope this has opened your mind to the fact that not everyone is a wifi maniac ;)

and thus, this is why the game will be unplayable for me,

You have a point, but wifi is fast becoming standard these days, your PC should be on a wifi connection itself. There's no huge reason not to have it, it's just ease of use. I've got 3 PCs, two laptops, a macbook, an iPod, a 360, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS and my Blu-ray player all connected with little to no effort at all. People need wifi!

So, should we take up a collection to send Capcom a $99 native SDK? Making a portable game system unplayable outside of your home Wifi is about as handy as a portable Commodore (http://oldcomputers.net/sx64.html). I'm sure the genius that came up with this figures it'll totally avoid piracy, I bet it'll do one better for sales, also.

It's not out in any other countries yet... CRAP!

And what's up with the Wifi thing Capcom? Half the reason I love PW so much is that it can be played anywhere. Doe you download the episodes, then keep them on the iDevice or do you play them off the internet? If the second option, seems a bit strange.

And only a buck?! Woot!

Yeah, if not I might stick to getting the DS ones. But for a buck? I might live with it for that price. I mostly play at my house and other places that have Wifi, and I could play other games while away. But that's half of what made PW on the DS so addicting, is that you can play it any time you want.

They're in totally different genres, and are both probably the best games in their genre and platform. Please don't compare them. It pains me to see one great game boosted over the other. In the end it only depends on which genre you prefer.

Oh I didn't really mean it that way, I was just saying how much I like the game, since for a long time TWEWY was my favorite DS game. I'm not even a huge fan of the other games like PW, I just think it just has such great writing and gameplay that it really is the best.

It looks like they might be using the oldest trick in the drug dealer book. Raising the price as you go. The first case is „115, but the second is „230, and 3-5 are "not decided."

From the above you might have also concluded (rightly) that you can only buy the first two cases right now. The rest are supposed to be out in January.

I might buy it, but I'll wait until the prices are set and then decide.

ps. whoever said that „115 is $1 is wrong. It is about $1.25, and that is only because the yen has been sucking bad since the end of November.

Keep in mind that the first chapter is shorter than the rest because it's some sort of "introduction/tutorial" so it's logical that it's cheaper than the second chapter.

1 - Ace Attorney (this is the one now on iPhone)
2 - Justice for All
3 - Trials and Tribulations
4 - Apollo Justice
5 - Investigations

It's a lot easier to keep track of the names in the original versions: Gyakuten Saiban 1234, Gyakuten Kenji :P

It's VERY important to play them all in order; there's new recurring characters added, major character development, cases building off of previous ones from old games, etc. The games are technically all standalone, but they're 100x better if you play them in order.

So, any guesses as to how much longer until it hits the states? I'm saying a week or so. It shouldn't take much longer than that seeing as it's already in the Japanese store. And it looks pretty complete as is. They already have the English script from the DS version, all they need to do is port it over to the iPhone, so I'm saying a week or less.

Having it download parts of the game from a server as needed is not a bad idea, but the execution in this case is one of the poorest I've ever heard of, especially since this game would lend itself so well to a much better and more natural implementation. Phoenix Wright is split into 5 episodes, each having 4-6 chapters - the most natural and intuitive way to handle this would have been to have the game download only the chapter the player is currently playing, and possibly the next one, with maybe the option to download an entire episode if the player isn't going to be able to get online for a long time (e.g. they're going overseas with a non-jailbroken iPhone). It would make far more sense than the retarded system they have now, would be much more convenient for everyone, and would integrate more easily with their DLC system.

Things like this boggle my mind, they really do. Even if they wanted to have a system that "micro-managed" downloads as they're doing (probably just to show they can, as a proof-of-concept), why not at least give people the option to download a full chapter? Do Capcom actually WANT people to pirate their games? Why are they going out of their way to give potential customers no other choice if they want to play their game offline?

I utterly hate piracy, but cases like this make me somewhat glad app crackers and places like App*****r exist, since they're the only way a lot of people are going to be able to enjoy this game properly.

OK. Well I saw this played on an iPod Touch with no active internet connection (far as I could tell) so I am hoping they all come packaged with the initial download of the US version.
