I wanted to start a proper thread for SteamPirates since it's coming out in February.

Just to introduce myself I'm creative director on the title, also I worked on Mecho Wars.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13236&stc=1&d=1262919976

SteamPirates is a traditional rpg, that features turn based battles like Final Fantasy etc...

The entire game is touch control, that means no virtual D Pad or anything like that, it's got a very nice control method that feels better than games with D Pads (I just have a problem with the virtual D Pad's)

The soundtrack is entierly orchestral and quite epic, you can find it here.

There is also a badge system.

What is the Badge System?

The Badge System is a character progression and customization mechanic based around level ups that is used to "power up" characters in SteamPirates. The Badge System is a customizable set of abilities/improvements that come in addition to standard leveling up improvements. In most ways, it is a simple "Skill Tree" found in other games.

How does it differ from a skill tree?

The goal of the badge system is multi-fold:

1) A character's badge tree has a total of 8-9 abilities which a player can customize and prioritize.

2) Customizability. Because we want to hit both the casual and gamer crowds, this system will give the "gamer" crowd something to spend some time on. Players will enjoy the fact that one Kat can be different from another Kat.

3) Flexibility. The kicker for the Badge System is that it's very flexible. You can change your skill allocations at any time while you're not in battle. In town, in dungeons, on the high seas. No more frustration with worrying whether or not you've gimped your character with your skill selection. No costly re-specs. Players can fiddle to their hearts content until they find something that works for their play style.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13239&stc=1&d=1262921557

Also SteamPirates will have mini games in it, like most console rpgs to make the gameplay more interesting at times.

The mini games will be

Ship Battles : battles in real team with your ship that you can customise

Defend Angel's House : in this mini game similar to Knights Onrush you have to defend Angel's house against Cats attacking it, so use your finger to throw the cats off the screen before they reach his house

Puzzle Pug : a match 3 mini with some other neat bonuses

All all these mini games will feature openfeint leaderboards and will be as deep as the other games in those genres, so you're not just getting one game with SteamPirates but several.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13237&stc=1&d=1262921053

Also the game has platforming sequences to add.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13241&stc=1&d=1262921779

Here is part of the intro story for people that are interested.

Once upon a time, a young baby girl was left desolate on the eastern shores of Cat Empire. Upon the discovery of her tightly bundled body in a picnic basket by a feline couple recently been saddened by the news of their inablility to have kittens of their own, they decided to adopt the human child and raise her as thier own…and they named her Kat. As Kat grew older, the other Cats began to notice that she was not like them for she had no fur and so they tormented and bullied her for many years, until one day she decided to set off into the seas to find her true identity and where she came from.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13238&stc=1&d=1262921097

The game's story is not like other rpgs, well it's not like SEED, so no stereotypes of young boys wanting to be warriors or something like that, instead it goes way more ridiculous.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13240&stc=1&d=1262921557

On the enemies to battles there will be several different types, from Venice inspired baddies to cats to robots.

Here is a mock up that has 5 different bad guys from the game that you can expect to battle.

http://forums.toucharcade.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13235&stc=1&d=1262921131

We still haven't decided on a launch price yet, so well maybe you guys should tell me on twitter what price you would buy the game for.

Hey Luc, looks sick! Been waiting for this one since I saw the priview on it. Can't believe it's coming out so soon, it felt like forever when they first announced it would be in February.

As for me, I'd probably pay anywhere from 5 to 7 bucks for a game like this. Finally, a real turn based RPG... the one thing I've been dying for. The ridicuous story is definetly going to boost the popularity... getting kinda tired of the cliche stories myself.

Hope this does well, really looks like an awesome game.

THIS LOOKS AWESOME! I'd buy the game for $1.99 or so. It looks like it'd be worth about that much, but I'm not sure how long it is...I can't wait for the game!

I'd say that that's a bit low of a price... I paid that price for Elven Chronicles, and from the looks of things, this is going to be WAY better, possibly the most in-depth one on the store. This is going to be killing me to wait for...

I see myself staying up for the release of this game like I attempted with NOVA.

February!? Sigh, I thought it was coming out in January :( The artwork is fantastic as usual and the badge system sounds amazing.

Now I wait... so very very impatiently...

Somerandomdude

The badge system reminds me of two games actually:

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga - There were a ton of badges that allowed for different stat increases and decreases, along with small abilities like being able to jump on spiked creatures.

AND

The World Ends With You - The different badges allowed for different attacks, specials, and stat changes. It was such an in-depth system too, it made half of the game for me.

I really have high hopes for this game. Good luck!

I think 4.99$ would be a fair bet, since this game might not appeal to mainstream audiences at first glance. Don't get me wrong, I think it will be an awesome game, but having a unreasonable introduction price and dropping it really burns early adopters. This usually results in bad feedbacks or negative reviews.

kingkong120
01-07-2010, 10:23 PM
This looks definitely at least $4.99. Sorry if I didn't see it, but other than the badge system, will there be other customizable options, like equipment/weapons or anything like that?

baby girl was left desolate (Sic!) on the eastern shores

Please, let an English native speaker check your text and/or provide an option to play in French!

Everything else sounds and looks great. I suggest pricing at 5 bucks.

Cue the The Princess Bride : "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

What you mean to say IMHO, is that the baby girl was abandoned.

Not to rile you up or anything - I just want this game to be as good as possible - which includes decent/good writing.

Look, it really doesn't. Desolate = abandoned as an adjective (which your Meriam-Webster link also says), but not how you use it. Seriously, native speaker edit FTW.
Anyway, would it be possible to play it in French? I'd really like to combine some language practice with entertainment ;).

P.S. I really like that head from Mecho Wars hanging on the wall :).

Lol, you guys are getting caught up on something so trivial... I don't think it's going to put anyone off from this game. I can think of other games, notably Fallen. Great game filled with grammar errors, but no one really paid much attention. With some good testing, it could be fixed and forgotten.

Be kinda cool if you guys talked in the forums a bit more, this seem like the kind of game that needs some form of hype to become successful. (just my personal sentiment) Maybe give us a little teaser every now and then to keep the thread alive till February. I know many of us are dying for a good FF clone, but having some early adopters who would give honest initial reactions probably helps this app once it is released.

well I would say it's closer to the Mario and Luigi series on DS than Final Fantasy, as in it has mini games, platforming sequences and a funny storyline

luc, how many hours of gameplay does it have?

that's actually a hard question to answer, it really depends on the player and if you decide to complete the game 100%

I haven't even calculated yet, since my goal has been to do a game that is entertaining the entire time and doesn't have questions that involve having to kill monsters over and over again, so it would be shorter than say Inotia 2, but the entire experience will be entertaining threwout the entire game and always something new to do

Lol, he had a sale when it said "Turn Based RPG". This may finally be the first big RPG to hit the store... can't wait! And with the announcement of Mario and Luigi like gameplay, I'm sold.

Is this going to have a free roam world like Mario and Luigi and Final Fantasy, or will it be one battle after the other, like TNA and Sonny?

Well, I hope that simplification of combat won't make it less interesting to play. I mean, if the interface was unnecessarily fiddly or whatever, it is one thing, but in a game that has a lot of combat, it really shouldn't be dumbed down too much. IMHO, the existing turn-based RPGs on the iplatform aren't tactical enough.

Oh, and BTW, will it be released for 2.2.1 too or only for 3+? I still can't decide to upgrade, since reportedly Wi-fi works worse for iPods on the newer OS.

I still can't decide to upgrade, since reportedly Wi-fi works worse for iPods on the newer OS.

Wasn't that fixed with 3.1? Seemed to me a small minority anyway.

I don't wanna put a downer on an otherwise awesome looking game, but the UI seems kinda simplistic and rushed in comparison to the rest of the artwork:

http://s3.amazonaws.com/twitpic/photos/full/58028225.png?AWSAccessKeyId=0ZRYP5X5F6FSMBCCSE82&Expires=1265718639&Signature=KGU%2FAJXlx3rIYzdBKofV6if5p3I%3D

...kinda hoping it's just a placeholder.

No Steam today, my luck has gone away
The iPhone stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No RPG today, it seems a common sight
But games are passing by, don't know the reason why

How could devs know just what this delay means
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know - my despair, dark and deep
Behind the door where I'm sitting still and weep

No Pirates today, it should'nt be just so
The company works hard, and turns night into day

But all that's left is a phone dark and empty
A small device resting useless in my hand
Becomes a shrine when I think of Steam Pirates
Just wanna load it down

No RPG today, it should'nt be just so
The company works hard, and turns night into day

How could devs know just what this delay means

we are trying to get it finished within a month :)

but it's since every level lasts around 40-50 minutes and we are making sure to tweak the battle system as good as possible

Since SteamPirates is a adventure/platforming game with rpg elements we need to make sure every element is right

I'm sure you guys would rather have a game that is great, than one that is average that has loads of updates out after to fix things

I would have to note that this game has some of the best controls for a platformer on the iPhone, I'm suprised alot of devs use a virtual D Pad which is terrible and works rarely well

Well, just take your time, as long as it turns out good (just look at my sig)

Can you give an estimate to how long a playthrough takes in total?

Also, you said it was an adventuring/platforming with RPG elements. How heavy are these elements (as in, stat gains, etc.)?

I can't give a estimate since while doing this game I wasen't like ok let's make it 28 hours or something else. Because then you just try to fill in those gaps and make boring parts.

I just wanted to do a game that is entertaining from start to finish. So it depends if you explore the levels or just go and finish your quest fastly without exploring.

Most of the game is spent battling and platforming, the ship battles, puzzle elements and tower defense elements are less.

But those mini games can then be played seperatly with leaderboards etc... on Openfeint

Wonder if the PSP Mini version will be out as well...

If the iPod version comes out first I'll get that one, if they come out at the same time I'd rather play it on the PSP..

the game's done there just working on the advertising dont know when its out,

Shouldn't they have worked out all of their marketing/ad provider contracts by now? A few days before release is NOT the time to start working an an advertising campaign.

This game looks like a winner. Take away those pauses in battles between turns and I'm definitely sold.

Which pauses do you mean?
Pauses are normal in turn-based battles.

This game looks awesome...looks like a buy for me. Wondering though if there's any iPad version planned or it being a universal app?

What he probably means is that a single battle looks long to complete, which is only because it's a demo, but if it's that long the the full game, battles will become a bit tedious...

They are, but there seem to be a few unnecessary steps (for examples, the characters take a step forward, pause, then fire. The whole thing could be one smooth motion). Doesn't seem like deal breaker to me, but it could certainly be improved.

+1 to that. I love independent RPGs.

It's a huge shame I'm not a fan of turn based RPG's because this is the most incredibly styled game of the lot of them.

It does look pretty slow, though I still want to buy it. With that said, now I think I'll be able to wait until this comes out on the PSP.

I'm not as desperate to have it.

Ive been waiting for this game forever, but im thinking of just skipping it now. Not because it doesn't look good but because im starting to feel jerked around by the publisher. Delay after delay with no information and then I get my hopes up for the release that is supposed to happen any day now, and then another "slight delay" that will be who knows how long. Just my two cents.

S.I.D. CrAzY

Anyways

It's a shame it might take longer, but I'll still purchase it whenever this get's released, probably as a Mini though. Either way the delay hasn't made me want it less, it might be frustrating, but it hasn't made the game any less appealing to me whatsoever.

The publisher/dev isn't "jerking" around anybody, they're just trying to ensure that they launch the game the best they can. They have no reason to be jerking any customer around.

I am amazed at the entitlement people feel when it comes to game releases. This is actually a good thing for these devs and yet some are saying they won't get it now since it will be delayed?? It will be the same game - either you want it or not.

In the meantime, today had a bunch of releases to fill the time.

I'd rather a delay that ensures a solid release vs a release like 100 rogues where the game crashes every 5 minutes (and the developer even admitted to releasing it with major bugs due to money issues). We should thank developers who take extra time to clean up any bugs/errors.

The only good iPhone example of a developer "jerking" us around is EA Mobile with Mirror's Edge. That is essentially a completed game that was suddenly delayed for the iPad version and now has essentially disappeared off the face of the earth with no clues on when it might come out. SteamPirates delays are nothing like this.

Yep, game delays are only bad when there's a lack of communication between the player and dev. Even just dropping a message that you're fixing a few bugs or whatever can go a long way.

Yes, but Luc wrote on twitter (on Monday):

"for everyone's info I have no idea if SteamPirates has been submitted it was supposed to? sigh, if only you guys knew how frustrated I am"

First, he said it was submitted... and now that? I don't really understand this.
He can always check the status on the devs AppStore if it is waiting in line or already in review.
