Seeing the title it will most likely be international teams only. I must say I don't care too much, I'm only interested in gameplay and will probably get this no matter what... Is it Q1 already? yes it is! But with motion capture done last week, it will be a little while... 31 March? :p

Wha...? Silly... asian... person? Mo-cap is pretty much turning real-life movements into animations by tracking certain points on a person's body. So in essence, they're capturing the motion, and applying it to animation making them more life-life. Like avatar. Those faces uses actual facial expressions from the actor, but on a blue face.

We're currently working on polishing work on the 3D models for the players and stadium. We don't want to show the game until we're happy with the quality. We'll have some in-game screens to share with you in the next week.

We've been developing team sports games (FIFA Soccer, Cricket & Rugby) on mobile phones for the last 8 years. We've also improved our 3D technology since we released Rugby Nations so you won't be disappointed. :)

Not really. It depends on where you come from.
Here in the UK, plain "Hockey" is considered to be "Floor Hockey". We use the term "Ice Hockey" to describe the hockey played on ice. The developers are from the UK, so hence the reason for the game being called "Ice Hockey Nations".

You'll notice that the logo in game is just 'Hockey Nations' as that is what we planned to call the game in the US. However, we've been prefixing it with Ice just to make sure people don't assume it's Field/Floor Hockey :)

You should add in Ice so it will be more universal, as stated above not all countries reffer to Ice Hockey as just Hockey (I live in Canada so my ears shoot up whenever I hear the word but still ;)).

Looks like a really great game but you should make the goalie bigger, buy some pads and put them on or even look at a picture and try and make it like that, can't wait.

Don't care for fighting, waste of coding, it's physics and awesome gameplay that are the most important for this kind of game - look forward to seeing a video of how it's shaping up :)

The teams that will be in the game will be: BELARUS, CANADA, CZECH REPUBLIC, FINLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, GREAT BRITAIN, LATVIA, NORWAY, RUSSIA, SLOVAKIA, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND & USA.

And yes there will be scoring animations and penalty min, but no fighting in this release – that might be something for a future update. :D

I agree, even if they do not have fighting in International Hockey, this is not a hockey simulations, it is a game. I would love to see a simple fighting mini game to add a new little gameplay element within the game. Plus, if it is a close game, you get in a fight, it would be interesting to be shorthanded or in a Power Play the final minute of a tie game. Makes for a more dramatic experience knowing that could happen.

This the best news for any game for my iPod yet. You should add fighting because it's just not the same hockey with out fighting. I ALSo hope there is big hitting and fast game play. You should make a shot out mode where Over blue tooth and wifi you can play with friends and take turns shoring on eachother and see who can score more goals.

Im so excited for this! I don't know why, maybe it's because it'll bring back the memories of going to Manchester Storm matches with my mum, or the time I went to Canada and watched Toronto Maple Leaves... Ahh, memories!

I reckon that after a short period of time this will be dropped to £1.79/ $3. They lowered rugby nations, and have made other games free. Plus, unless a game gets in the top 100, it's very unlikely to excel and stand out from the huge app store crowd.
Note that I did say "very unlikely". If made correctly, with all the correct rules, great gameplay/ AI and more polish than seen with their other games, it could raise the bar for sports games in general. Still, unless TA give it a raving review, and there's amazing positive feedback, I think I'll wait for a price drop.

Doing so has caused an exponential increase in interest in his game and drove in many new sales that would have otherwise been lost by the wayside.

You are missing a golden opportunity here to harness Touch Arcade as a form of marketing for your company and games. For example, the ONE MAN Development team behind Necromancer Rising has taken to answering TA User questions on a daily basis in his game's thread, which can be found here (http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=42360&page=98) (Now has over 900 responses). Doing so has caused an exponential increase in interest in his game and drove in many new sales that would have otherwise been lost by the wayside.

Ignoring the frequent calls and questions of an avid gaming community is a catastrophic blunder.

Totally agree with this. Another example is Revolt. They're even discussing the price of the game with the buyers- that dedication is earning the dev so much popularity.

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I've been real busy at GDC this week and every spare moment has been spent helping to polish our Hockey game for release.

As soon as I'm in the office on Wednesday I'll put together a game-play video as I know you're all desperate to see how it stacks up.

For the time-being here are some new screens showing the work we've been doing on the controls, action replays and player markers.

I should also say, we are hoping to submit at the end of next week if (and that's a big if) bug fixing goes to plan!

Glad to see that you guys are closing in on a release date. The new screenshots look very good. The main critique I'd have is that the skate blades are far too big (in particular, they are too long). Also, there is a bit too many "lens flares" on the ice surface. I understand it's intended to be a reflection of the overhead lighting, but it looks out of place.

What size rink are you using for the game? From the screenshots, it appears to be an NHL-sized ice surface. Being this is an International hockey game, why didn't you opt for an International rink? Being that the rule sets between NHL and International hockey are different, many other questions are raised: Can Goaltenders move outside of the trapezoid? Is there no touch icing?

I disagree. I see whT you mean by the puck thing but as far as the player movement it looked pretty good to me. My main concern regarding player movement will be how the player does OTHER things WHILE moving.... Like passing, wrist shot, etc

There's still time for us to change the red circle around the puck as opinion is divided in our office about whether we should have it or not. I personally don't like it but others think that it allows you to keep track of the puck a lot better. Be good to get a few more opinions on this from the TA forum.

In terms of motion on ice - There is a trade off between making the game fun and responsive to your control inputs and the realism of the movement. Maybe we haven't got that balance perfect yet but our primary goal was to make the game fun and we'll continue to refine the animation/movement as we're planning to do regular updates after the initial release.

We're committed to making this the very best hockey game on the iPhone/iPod Touch no matter who the competition is. :)

Take this advice.

Giving the player an OPTION is always better. If your colleagues have a divided opinion about it, then the people who buy the game will also have a divided opinion and therefore an optional red circle is the way to go.

Regarding the player movement, I think it is fine. Especially seeing as the game is for the idevice, not a console. I don't think you should be concerned about the player movement.

I of course would offer my services :p but on a serious note....this type of game really gets judged by people based on what they like to see or play in REAL Ice Hockey. I think you could get some very good input by inviting a few select people to beta test it

I play a lot of video hockey, from the retro stuff all the way up to modern day NHL. 2. An option to play in portrait OR landscape mode would be sweet! I know it might be late to add this if its not already there. But similar to the console NHL games, to be able to play top to bottom OR left to right would be sweet

Thanks for listening. I agree that there should be an option for having the circle round it or not. I understand what you mean about trying to get the balance right, and after taking this into consideration I agree that it's more important for it to play beatifully, than look great but be frustrating to play.
I still think it should be released at £1.79 / $3 though :p

Also this depends on what hockey rules the game follows. In NHL rules, a player has to "touch up" which means that when the opposing team "ices" the puck, you have to make contact with the puck using your stick. However....if a member of the oposing team (the team that causes the icing or ices the puck) touches the puck BEFORE you do, then the icing is negated and play is allowed to continue.

Once a team is called for icing, the play stops and there is a faceoff in the team who caused the icings zone.

Now other leagues use a different icing rule. If you noticed in these past winter Olympics, the Womans rules for icing were the same as USA college rules. That is....if you send the puck over 2 lines to the end of the opposing teams side, then an icing will automatically be called. WITHOUT a player having to touch the puck.

This rule is like that mainly to prevent players who are chasing after the puck to touch up....from slamming eachother into the end boards; thus causing injury

- stats, stats, stats, stats. One of the unsung heroes of sports games
- Customizing Jerseys similar to the system used in stinger table hockey, I had a lot of fun making NHL teams and using this would be even better
- a form of NHL 10's Be a pro mode
- rosters even if the names are made up
- no red circle around the puck.

I wish you the best with possibly my most anticipated app purchase since the iphones release.

I think the idea to turn a puck "halo" on or off is a good idea as well. I was going to suggest it earlier actually but another member beat me to the punch.

I would strongly suggest AGAINST the puck trail however. When Fox first implemented that technology, it was widely criticized and made fun of by Canadians and true fans of hockey. Seeing as how the true fans of the game will make up a good part of the 'early adopters', I would recommend against it. It was such a gaffe on Fox's part it was actually parodied in a commercial here (American gets thrown out of a bar with a red laser trail behind him), and will forever live on in the line of a Canadian punk rock band's song - Propagandhi - Speculative Fiction (Your stupid f$@&'n laser pucks were just the start).

Just thought I'd shed some light on how the home of hockey viewed that feature.

Otherwise, I think the ability to toggle offsides and icing off and on are good too for anyone who wants a faster-paced game.

To help with anyone who doesn't understand offsides and icing, the purpose of the rule helps make it more clear I think:

Icing is to prevent a team from simply dumping the puck down the ice to waste time...presumably when they're winning. Anytime the puck is shot past the opponent's goal line from your side of centre ice is considered icing (except when short-handed).

Off-side as with most sports is to prevent cherry-picking or having a man behind the defense that you can dump the puck to for an easy break. To prevent this, the puck has to enter into a team's zone (cross blue line) before any player does.

Soooooooo can't wait for this game!!!

have you considered multiple control methods? like, joystick as the default but also add an option for touch and drag controls maybe.

i have no idea how they'd work exactly but maybe something along the lines fo touch a player and drag in the direction you want to move and swipe to hit the puck. something along those lines would be really cool.

Honestly, I'd just be happy if we could customize the player names and numbers, ala Ice Stars. Since there are only 14 teams, I don't think we'll be able to recreate the NHL, but I could be wrong.

As long as the game plays well, I'll be happy.

Alot of people asking when the game will come out....they stated that they are taking a bit more time to iron out the kinks. Im sure they will let us know when its submitted!

As for my suggestions: :)
I am still curious how the camera angles will be. Meaning....will there be an option to play in landscape OR portriate mode? In most of the hockey video games there are options to play either side to side OR top to bottom. This would be sweet!!

How could you possibly play this game in portrait? The controls would be cramped, and the game would probably take longer to make for both orientations...but a suggestion is a suggestion. It could happen!

Hopefully Distinctive will submit soon...i guess they had bugs to get out, since they were hoping to submit last thursday or friday.

Sadly, we've not submitted yet. We found some bugs in the tournaments so we're just fixing those up. We'll submit as soon as we're certain they're fixed.

To answer some of your other questions...


Yes the game has both a league system (using all 14 national teams) and a 'Go for gold' game mode. The league isn't customisable but maybe that's something for an update.

There is also an exhibition match, practice and shoot-out modes.

You set the difficulty between easy, medium and hard before each exhibition match and at the start of both tournament types.

Following feedback here, you can now switch the puck marker, icing and offside on/off.

Can you guys give us a time frame of when you plan to submit? What kind of tournament bugs were you encountering?

Oh, and how will the practice mode be different from the exhibition mode? Practice shooting, like a tutorial mode? Can't wait for the shoot out mode!

EDIT: Is there going to be online leaderboards? Openfeint? Any social network implemented yet (Or will it be added in an update?)

While I realize lots of people have specifics they want to know about the game re: submission, release date, etc., I'm the sure developers are hard at work on the game and making it as good as they can.

Personally, I would rather them take the extra time to make it all it can be. I'm happy to wait an extra week or two to play it if it means it's going to be that much better and enjoyable to play.

I also hope they take as much time as needed because I'm a fan of hockey and want to see this game succeed. Releasing a great game at launch can create lots of positive buzz and word-of-mouth - synergies that are unlikely to happen if the game is lackluster to begin with and is improved through updates down the road.

To the developer - I'm anxiously awaiting this game, but please don't rush it just to appease a few impatient people. Fans of this game will thank you for sticking true in the end!

idk if anyone asked this but the puck seems to travel a bit fast in the video is it gonna be that fast on release or will it just take a little time to be able to intercept the puck and such? ok i just watched the video again sometimes it looks like the puck is perfect fastness but other times it looks like you pass it and boom its on the teamates stick like time travel

never played nhl game? the best i feel is nhl 09 for xbox 360 but sometimes the players would just get stuck for a second or 2 other then that best hockey game so far

I thought the puck was moving a bit too fast at first too, but after watching the video again, it seems to be moving at around the right speed.

OK I really like the video, looks like a very fun game that will play well on the iPhone platform. The animations are awesome, the celebrations will add to the realism and give it the hockey feel. I don't feel the puck is moving too fast, but that's just my opinion.

I'm really excited about tournament mode, tournaments will add a lot of depth and fun, I'm going to enjoy beating the Russians :p

Puck speed seems fine to me.

I understand the core game is still being worked on right now, but a few ideas for the developer in terms of little touches that could add some extra fun to the game (some of these are lifted from the old NHL hockey games):

- ability to break/shatter the glass with hard shots
- red light/siren when a goal is scored
- hitting animations - guys sprawled on the ice, ability to check them into the benches?
- drop passes
- one-timers
- I really like when the AI realizes you're on a power play and your players set up in a power play formation allowing you to move the puck around for that perfect shot

Finally, some sort of celebratory scene or animations would be cool. I hate when you win a tournament/playoffs/championship mode and it's no different than if you won a regular game.

Anyways, just a few more ideas.

stats would be great like the one´s on stinger maybe ? (which player scored how many goals and how many pucks has the goalie saved)
and i dont know if you have it already integrated but you should be able to get the goalie of the ice
an epic thing would be if you crash your opponement really hard that there will be a slowmotion replay

How many Sports iPhone games have a franchise mode?

League mode is essentially season mode anyway.
