I read this and realized we are truly going into the next generation :)

iPhone truly is a triquarter.

"...he set his cellphone’s alarm clock to go off every 20 minutes. Sixty-five hours later, a French rescue team saved him."
Why doesn't my battery last that long:(

iPhone's battery can last that long, if no other apps are running.
Using his iPhone in life-or-death situations can also mean that man's wisdom has degenerated. From depending on one's brain in dire situations, now we depend on a $300 gadget.

lol
In all fairness, the alarm probably did help keep him alive, or at least from going into a coma.
The first aid stuff he should just know:rolleyes: People are definitely getting way too reliant on technology.

Reliant on technology? Are you saying he should have already known how to bandage himself up?
Either we know everything or we rely on books, technology, other people to fill in the blanks.

Yes. That's not just basic first aid, but basic self reliance. If you can't take care of yourself, you shouldn't expect others to. When I lived in Manhattan and San Francisco, that mindset drove me nuts. Nobody wanted to be responsible for themselves.
If you can't wrap up a wound or identify shock, you've probably lived too cushy of a life to know better.
Well he should have known how to dress a bandage and tourniquet without the app. It's just common sense. Bandage + pressure = reduced blood loss. Simple. Why should someone need to read the info off an iPhone app?

For reassurance, maybe?

exactly. When you're ****ed up, you want reassurance. Imagine having your ****ing leg broke and a gash in your head and you're trapped under a bunch of rubble, it's all about being as resourceful as possible.
instead of this stupid hick thinking that "i can do everything myself"

See, a person who knows how to take care of themselves probably wouldn't call a moderator a stupid hick:rolleyes:
My point is that knowing how to field dress a wound is pretty basic.
For instance, I caught my hand in a giant sander a few weeks ago and lost the end of my thumb. I noticed I was going into shock and acted accordingly. I even made sure to dress it before the adrenaline wore off and the pain started. If I didn't know that stuff I would have probably panicked(it was f***ing disgusting!)
People that don't know things like that are literally worthless in an emergency. I don't think everyone needs to be a boyscout, but this is basic "how to be a human" stuff.
The end of my thumb grew back, BTW. :D

Or his resourcefulness? I would've used the backlight in an emergency too. Don't have to be so down on everything...

Exactly. You need to know in advance. I think First Aid training should be compulsorily taught in every school.
I mean, say you cut off your fingers, how are you going to whip out your iPhone and look up what to do next?

Exactly. Therefore, Apple should implement voice-control in their next iPhone.
Ok, slightly off topic here, but this needs a mention.
There is some dumb christian 'charity' organization who is sending out electronic bibles named 'proclaimers' to Haiti and other suffering countries.
WTF? This REALLY pisses me off. People need water, food and money. They don't need fricken bibles. The transportation space that is occupied by this piece of crap could be used to transport water, food, money etc that actually saves lives. So in theory, this could indirectly kill people. This is BS.

How about not? AT least they're helping. Somewhat.

Yeah, word of advice, don't call mods idiots, otherwise you get put on ITO, and that post gets deleted.. Trust me, I know.
How about not? AT least they're helping. Somewhat.
Did you even read what I said?
They are NOT helping AT ALL. They are hindering the whole aid/rescue operation. People need water, food, shelter and money to live. What use is a bible (except burning it to keep warm)?
And what makes it worse is the fact that transporting these electronic bibles could be used to transport aid which actually saves lives. It also creates more chaos when the bibles arrive, when trying to distribute them, while real charities are trying to distribute aid that actually saves lives.
You obviously value the bible more than people's lives.

"I just sent a bunch of eating utensils to a country that's starving. At least I'm helping."
What you just said? Sounded just as stupid.

They're giving hope to those people. That's how they're helping.

They're giving hope to those people. That's how they're helping.
If they really wanted to send a message of hope, they'd provide support, not a Bible. Or make it a two-part package: Bible and food, shelter, etc.
Tell me how a Bible is going to do them any good if they're bleeding to death, or have no home. Giving them hope's appropriate for its own time. That time is after the support is given. Not now.
They're giving hope to those people. That's how they're helping.
The most important thing is to stay alive, right?
Which is better?
Hope, followed by death.
or
Living.
As I said before, people need water, food, shelter, money etc a lot more than they need 'hope'.
First of all the money that could be used on essential survival aid (such as water and food) is wasted on these electronic bibles.
Then they are transported all the way to Haiti, when essential aid could have been transported instead.
Then when they arrive in Haiti, it creates more chaos, drains the already poor infrastructure, and gets in the way of true charities who are trying to administer actual aid such as water, food, money that can actually save lives.
And why the hell do these people need bibles anyway? The majority of Haiti is Christian anyway, they are likely to own bibles already. Why the hell are they attempting to proselytize these already-Christian people?
If you think that sending bibles and other useless crap is a good thing, there is clearly something wrong with you.

Of course everyone should ideally be taught first aid, but what if you find yourself in a situation where you have not been taught how to deal with it, whether it's first aid or something different? What if you're stranded in the woods and you don't know whether the plant you are intending to eat actually is poisonous or not? Having apps that can help in any emergency situation is a great idea.

If you ask me, sending bibles to dying people sounds like they're basically just saying "yeah, you're totally f***ed, so read this and try to cheer up before you die horribly".

I was talking about the first aid app. People should know these things, they're basic.
At this rate people in the year 2020 are going to need the iPhone 8G to teach them how to change a light bulb because they never bothered etching it into their brain.

As a Christian I have to admit that was a weird move.
Isn't that what missionaries are for? Sending live people there to preach and help the victims emotionally?
