View Full Version : Your First Gaming System

In light of the "how old are you" thread, my question:
*What was your first gaming system/platform?*
Mine was called the Odyssey 2000. Tons of fun.
Also during that time we got a Super Pong system at a garage sale or something. It was a self-contained system that ran a few variations of Pong.
And then came the NES. Holy sh!t. Mind-blowing. You younger kids have no idea what a revolution that was.
(If there is already a thread on this subject, please remind me, with great hostility, that I should use the search function. [I did.]
And then don't provide a link, and heavily imply that those who can't find the mentioned thread are morons.
Thanks!)

SAMESIES BRO! ... well, actually, I just remember the pikachu on the side, and not the ridiculous color scheme, but I was in the 1st grade.
My first system that i got was the NES. Got it from my uncle, who has just about every system out there. Used to play that thing every day. MARIO FTW!
But my first system that i bought myself was the gameboy. THE ORIGINAL!
Anyone remember the Dreamcast? Like a phone, but the controls slid out...it was handheld...wow, i should really just google it, since i cant remember. :P
EDIT: Sorry, i was thinking of the NeoGeo Pocket...haha, what a difference. Heres a pic of what i meant.

My parents owned it before I was born, I just picked it up at the age of two. Nearly everything in the late 1970s had faux wood paneling for some reason, the later models dropped it from the design.

My dad had a Commodore Vic-20, played a few classic games on there like Pac-Man, Clowns, and a few others that I can't remember. The first console I could actually call mine was a NES.
I'm a ways off, but when I have a kid, I'm gonna force him to start off on a NES and work his way through the SNES, N64, PSX, and onward before they get to the new stuff. Raise em right. :D:p

YES! I've been saying that for years. 20 NES games, 15 Genesis/SNES games, 10 PSX/N64 games then they can play whatever they want.

N64... Which is still in good condition and I still play. Some of my favorites are on that system like Paper Mario, the Banjo-Kazooie games, and Bomberman Hero (yes, that low-budget Bomberman action game... It's still fun). My first handheld was a Gameboy color, with my first game being Wario Land 1, both of which I still have.

I got an Atari VCS (which later got renamed 2600) probably around 1980 -- guess that qualifies as my first console. I remember getting a summer job in 1981 and spending all the money I made on game cartridges -- my parents were pissed!
Most of my early gaming took place in arcades, though. At the time, consoles delivered only a pale imitation of what you could get for a quarter at the mall.

My first real console had to be the NES. Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, and 1942 ate up a lot of my time. Then we come to the 64, ad take a giant leap to the original XBox and now all three next-gen consoles.

Depends on what you classify as "gaming system". I had a couple of little LCD Game & Watch things first. Then I had a Microvision (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microvision) with a couple of cartridges. My first real console was a Coleco Gemini (an Atari 2600 clone) back in 1982, followed by a Colecovision with driving controller in '83. Then I lost both in a terrible mixup when moving, so I was given a real Atari 2600 with a bunch of games in 1984. After that I switched to computers and haven't owned a contemporary console since. (I used to collect classic consoles and games for a while, but I haven't owned a game console that was current in any way because I've never seen the point.)

Friends had Atari 2600 systems that I played regularly.
First system I owned was a Colecovision, and quickly got a Vectrex unit to go with it. I remember everyone thinking the games on those two systems being mind-blowing in comparison to the 2600! :D

It's easy to laugh now, but at the time it seemed almost magical to play a game on your TV set. Back then (1975), most people hadn't even seen a real computer, much less owned one. I remember being kind of in awe of my friend who owned one of these machines (a feeling later provoked by another friend's then-brand-new Apple II). I don't want to be a typical old fogey and declaim that "young people today are spoiled!" But I will say that the late 70's were an exciting time to be a geeky kid, seeing all these previously impossible devices suddenly come into the marketplace.

Yeah, mine's something like that. Some sort of stretching-the-permutations-of-Pong thing you could plug into the telly, I think from these folks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandstand_%28game_manufacturer%29).
Then we got a ZX81. It was the future!

I agree--it was totally magical.
When Santa brought me that Sears Pong console, I was in heaven! When my parents hooked it up to the old black-and-white TV, I could hardly believe my eyes...all the neighbors came over to see how we could play a game right on the TV set. :) The late 70's were definitely an exciting time to be a geeky kid.

Late 70s and into the 80s. The Atari 2600 ruled the roost but the Intellivision (discs of pain and all) and the Colecivision made me envious, especially because of the driving controller, which made it all the more special when I got one. (But I still loved the 2600 for the sheer amount of games you could get.) Before I got my first computer I played the hell out of these systems -- probably drove my dad nuts hogging the TV like I did. In fact, when we moved he just gave me the TV and did without for a while, listened to the radio instead, while that 2600 became my after-school sanctuary.
I can't imagine what it's like for the younger generations today, having never grown up without video games, or even those whose first systems provided pretty lifelike graphics.

Any of you Atari players still have/use it? My original one broke but I have a backward compatible 7800 and bought a couple of new carts a few years back from the Atariage store (http://www.atariage.com/store/), Flap Ping and This Planet Sucks. It's awesome that there is a community of developers interested enough in a 30 year old piece of hardware to keep making games for it.

Yeah, I still play it in emulators from time to time. I used to have original hardware and had half a ton of homebrew carts for it as well (also via the AA store). I ended up selling my collection off though because I owned almost all domestic carts (except for the ultra rare $1,000+ ones and a few of the several-hundred-dollar ones) plus a bunch of Europeans, Brazil pirates (great way to get PAL games in NTSC), multicarts, etc. The collecting wasn't really fun anymore. So I sold it all off and bought some big time upgrades for my computer. Haven't gotten back into collecting since.

I almost don't dare say this, but this is the single reason for which I will condone what would be called piracy, to preserve these gaming systems and games for future generations to experience in some way. I own nearly all the old systems/games I played when I was a kid and I will never be getting rid of them, but someday the SNES will be considered ancient and very hard to come across, and being that nearly all of my favorite games of all time are on that system, it would be such a shame if they weren't able to be enjoyed anymore.
It's awesome that we have things like the Virtual Console, XBLA, and the App Store to help with this legitimately, but some games and consoles will inevitably fall through the cracks.
