Hey, touchArcade!

We at Nine Pound Studios know that we have already had the word spread here for our game, Xenome: Episode 1, (thanks, slighmd!) but we would like to kick the word off, officially, now that we are closer to release, and heading inevitably toward beta testing!

Xenome Episode 1 will be a single player RPG. You are a scientist who wakes up from cryo sleep a few hundred years from now. Earth is pretty messed up after a nuclear event that was intended to wipe out uncontrollable disease. Your memory is foggy - you don't really remember who you are. You soon learn that a lot of people want you - dead or alive. In this hostile paradise you will learn who you are, who the bad guys are (maybe), and why a haz-mat suit is your style of choice.

Our game will be a fully immersive 3D RPG in a huge seamless world. You will be able to walk around for literal miles (in game) without those pesky loading screens. You will explore some pretty cool environments and battle mobs of all forms. Missions, loot, abilities, leveling, exploring.

For more information about the game, and some sweet visuals to do what I just said justice, take a look at our official site: www.xenomeonline.com

Be sure to sign up on our forums while you're there...we're lonely!

Is this out? Is there a link? It looks very, very sweet, like the setting from Fallout 3 meets the gene splicing of Bioshock or Deus Ex. I'm not really interested in the MMO but the stand-alone RPG is quite intriguing.

EDIT: I see the thread had been moved, so I guess the more appropriate question is: When?

I also want to take a second to mention that we, at Nine Pound Studios are getting ready to Beta Test our first game title, Xenome: Episode 1. If you are interested in testing, head on over to our official forums and follow the instructions found in this post:

We will be looking for several people to do some Beta testing for Xenome: Episode I. Beta testers will receive a Beta version of XE1 along with a special certificate that will allow them to run the beta version for a period of 2 weeks. Want to be a Beta Tester? Read on...

so we get to keep the beta? basically no reward. still, looks cool, might apply!

EDIT: phone number? forget it then :-/

The Cryo Chamber Explorer looks pretty nice. I wonder how the graphics level will be kept when played on the iPhone/iTouch. Well, I have a 2G iTouch so it certainly won't look as nice as that.

As for the beta, are the people that sent an email way back, but after you said the actual account was made, need to re-send their sign-up? For myself, I sent it on the 3rd.

@ redsoxsrule424

Testers have not been selected yet. We are letting sign-ups accumulate at the moment, as we have just officially started spreading the word about the beta outside of our official website.

Shortly after you have signed up, you will receive an email with a more detailed application to be filled out. This helps us gauge many different things, and will help us fine-tune our selection process for Episode 2 and the Xenome MMORPG.

Just a heads up, that we have changed the way we are doing Beta applications.

Instead of sending an email to sign-up, then receiving another email to fill out, all you need to do is follow the instructions found at this post on our official forums:

http://www.xenomeonline.com/forums/15-game-discussions/68-xenome-episode-1-beta-application#68

With a simple copy and paste of the information found there into an email, the middle man has been cut out, making the process much easier on both ends.

Previous Beta Applicants need not re-apply or do anything else- we have your information via the old method, and that is sufficient.

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

The CryoChamber on the website is built directly from the geometry and FX we implemented in the in-engine opening cutscene. The resolution is higher on the website due to it running on a computer as opposed to the iPhone. It will closely represent the final look in the cutscene.

The following link is to a video of a bunch of different things within the game.

The video showcases combat, some UI, the cutscene from the beginning, and a smattering of other stuff from within the game.

Bear in mind we are still in alpha and the game requires a bit more polish before she is ready for prime time! Have a look-see and we hope you enjoy all of the team's hard work at Nine Pound.

I had another look at the video and here are some things I'd like to see improoved:

-this effect that makes it look like sand is flying around is too fast. I think it may look better if the animation was slower.
- the textures for the gas station should maybe be in abit higher quality. big objects like this one should have some more detail.

NinePoundStudios

@iVaro

As of right now, Xenome is only running up to standards on the higher-end devices. It is very likely the first release of the game will only run on the iPod Touch 3rd Gen and 3gs, due to their superior processing power and memory.

We will continue with optimization through release, however, as we fully intend to get the game running well on lower-end devices.

Xenome is pushing a lot of boundaries on the platform, and we wouldn't want to leave anyone out in the cold from the experience!

NinePoundStudios

We have some newer images of Xenome available for your perusal:

http://www.xenomeonline.com/images/phocagallery/thumbs/phoca_thumb_l_Screenshot%20-%20Map.png

(The in-game map. The green arrow does not represent actual player size, nor does the yellow arrow inside of it. Instead of using a tiny spec, which actually would represent player size, we opted for something more visible! Keep in mind that this terrain can be seamlessly navigated, with no loading after booting the game up. That's about 15 square km to dance/maim in)

http://www.xenomeonline.com/images/phocagallery/thumbs/phoca_thumb_l_Screenshot%20-%20Droid%20Fight.png

(A fight to the finish with a Harpy Droid. We pulled out of this one alive, after fleeing in cowardice, of course)

@iVaro

Lucky guys also, why don't you guys try to release the game for all devices but make the older ones have loading times or something like that?

@iVaro - Our main focus over the next few weeks will be getting the game to run on 2nd Gen devices. I know that there are tens of millions of users on that platform and we would love for those users to experience Xenome. I have a 1rst Gen iPod!

The thing that is most difficult is that we have a huge seamless open world. You can literally walk around for 30 minutes constantly exploring new territory. And all that happens without loading screens. We currently believe that we will be able to achieve this on the 2nd Gen devices. If we can, everyone wins!

Yes, Silica Flats used to be a gorgeous vacation spot, full of life and buildings. Now, it has been swallowed up by sand and hostile creatures.

We have been approved by Apple after a smooth review, and intend on shipping within the next 2-3 weeks, barring no major changes we decide to implement.

NinePoundStudios

@ipodrocks123

There will indeed be multiplayer, when we release our MMO. Before that, however, we have a single-player sequel to Xenome.

Aside from the seamless open world, lore is one of the biggest strengths we believe our game has. We really want to drive this point home and deliver some solid story worth experiencing with a follow-up.

We have a strong foundation in the making with Xenome: Episode 1, which will give us more time to focus on building off of it and making things bigger and better in the following games.

How long is the story in this game?

What is the replayability in this game like?

Can we please have some more screens - possibly weapons/enemies/locations/NPC's?

Are there going to be numerous sidequests to keep us busy?

I know I probably sound like my expectations are pretty high and while some of these features are not incorporated into the game due to space it'd be a nice touch to truly make it feel RPG-ish :)

Hey all!

Just want to address some questions coming in-

State of the Game: We are currently a week or two from release, as the first version of the game is all but complete. While we get our ducks in a row, we have our sights on building an enhanced iPad version, optimizing Xenome for older devices, and developing our sequel (among other things).

About the Environment: Silica Flats is a seamless environment, where you will only experience one load screen per game session. While you are free to go off in any direction, there is a 30 level range of hostile creatures you must be cautious of.

Travel in the Environment: The Xenome Universe uses devices known as 'Pingers' to fast travel. This generally speeds up going from place to place. Keep in mind, you must first discover the Pinger before Pinging to or from it.

Story/Sidequests/Length: Following and completing the missions in Episode 1 has taken us no less than 12-15 hours (and we know where everything is), with added time for sidequest chains and various easter eggs.

Replayability is essentially, in the eye of the beholder. But, if customizing your character and accumulating loot doesn't hold your attention, we are looking into adding a possible 'Hard' mode and/or achievements.

At this time, we don't have any further screenshots to share, but the videos in the original post will likely do more justice than they can.

LkmuapRaZTA

We believe we are going to be delivering an innovative and unique experience to the platform, and hope our players feel the same way.

Thanks for the interest in Xenome!

any vehicles we can drive to get around?

NinePoundStudios
06-02-2010, 12:54 PM
@ playn

Currently, the player can travel only by foot or via our Pinger system. As the series develops into an MMO and the story progresses, vehicles will surely become a more realistic option to add into the Xenome Universe.

At the current time in our lore, some people have just resurfaced from underground and others have just returned from a long voyage in space. The land is covered in hostile creatures and pseudo-humans nicknamed "Nukers."

Civilian vehicles haven't quite made their triumphant return yet- and there still aren't many alternatives to gasoline (which is all but depleted).

Not sure what to think of this one. Graphics and animation look a bit tacky. Gameplay seems reminiscent of a mmorpg, which isn't a Good Thing in a single player game. Of course there's a chance content (quality, not quantity) could be the saving grace, and I can just about see myself taking a punt at roughly 1/3 of current price. I foresee a quick sale.

Would be glad to be proven wrong though.

Nothing like Crusade of Destiny. If the gameplay looks a bit MMO-like it's because it will be one eventually.

I've been waiting for this game for months. It has the potential to be game changing. The next evolution of Ravensword, in a sense (in the sense that Ravensword tried to forever alter the way we percieve idevice gaming) This has drawn comparisions to a 3rd person Borderlands. Either way, this could be awesome.

ill elaborate slightly since im not under NDA

the devs plan to make an episode 2 (seperate game) and then a full MMO of the two episodes added together + extra.. thats my understanding at least

this is the starting grounds for the MMO

Whoops! You guys weren't supposed to see that =).

The build that became available in the App store in NZ this morning was posted in error due to us having posted an incorrect date on the App store. The build that was there is outdated - it was a prerelease submitted to Apple to verify that we wouldn't run into issues with approval. Sorry for the false alarm!

We have a build of the game in a ready-to-ship state, but are working through marketing campaign details. We as anxious as anyone to have a launch date set.

In other news, we are also making good progress on the iPad version of Xenome. We are refactoring the user interface completely to take advantage of the increased screen real-estate. We are also working hard to optimize performance on the iPad - the iPad screen is 5.2 times the size of the iPhone screen, however the graphics chip is basically the same one used on the iPhone.

Oh - and the App Store screen shots that were posted are grossly outdated and were put on the store as placeholders only. I'll see if I can dig up some new screens and post them here.

The concept is appealing. I could live with rough graphic edges
as long as it´s fun to play AKA a tight combat/whatever sytem (not like Ravensword).

This game has been approved by Apple for a long time now. It seems like people have forgotten about it. If they're delaying the release for marketing reasons, their marketing kinda sucks. We're talking zero hype here. I hope they aren't playing a lot of marketing $ just for their game to be forgotten & ignored.

I still have high hopes though. Don't get me wrong. This game stands the chance of becoming a real sleeper hit.

And no, it's not out. I bumped the accidental release thread because the Upcoming games thread got closed by Imnosuperman. Blame it on him, not me, if you got angry because you thought bumping the thread meant it had come out.

It hasn't. Then again, doesn't seem like too many people care right now anyway.

so any official news on the actual release? i'm not a person to often check on upcoming games but this looks like it could be really great once it is actually out.

if they really are just holding this back to build up publicity-marketing-hype-whatever, i don't think that this is the right the move.

People have compared this to Borderlands more than Fallout.

It has been approved by Apple and could be released by the Devs whenever they feel like it. That's my understanding. There is no release date as of yet though. I mentioned in a different Xenome thread (there are actually like 4 seperate threads for this game), that the whole hype marketing thing seems to be having the opposite effect of whatever this company is trying to accomplish. This game is currently recieving no hype at all and has largely been forgotten by most.

I still think it could be amazing, especially for an indie effort. One of the sleeper hits of the year. It has incredible potential. There just isn't any buzz for this game right now and that is unfortunate.

Same vague answer for the last 3 weeks. All I gotta say is this game better not bomb when it comes out. If you're investing this much time and energy, then I hope this game doesn't fade into obsurity the same way 1000s of other apps do. Like I said, I would be much more worried about the fact that there is no pre-release hype and that people are coming forward now, before the game releases, saying that they've never heard about it before. The pre-release hype and marketing for this game has been terrible. I can see the plan here is to sink all of your hype efforts into the game post release. The game will release and then some sort of marketing campaign will be launched alongside that release. That plan is shortsighted and full of fail, in my opinion. Not enough people know about this game now. Not enough people are anticipating this game now. Pre-hype has a huge effect on a game's overall sales.

I don't think they have. That is the problem. They will not begin with the marketing campaign until after the game is actually released. The fact that they have essentially refused to market the game at all before its release is a mistake. They have generated absolutely no pre-release hype.

Hi,

Those who say this developer has done nothing, marketing wise, you know this how?

There are lots of stuff done behind the scenes that lead up to a release, of any sort.

There could be press kits sent out to sites that are to be used when the game is released, and maybe not before.

Nice to have opinions.

If we have learned anything about delaying a game in the iphone gaming arena, it is not a good idea....look at deliverace or mirrors edge, all this does is cause outrage and backlash from impatient gamers. I understand wanting to hold the game for promo purposes but this can backfire mre than it can help.

@beeasy0203

There has been no delay with Xenome launching, as no final date was ever set, so it will arrive precisely when we intend it to :D Worry not, we aren't just sitting on the game:

Currently, we are polishing the iPhone/iPod version, and forging ahead with the iPad version, which could potentially be ready for a simultaneous release (no promises!).

Also, the advances we make on the iPad version directly affect our second generation advances, which is another large focus for us.

Finally, production on the sequel- at least on the design/creative side has been underway as well.

Hope this clears up any confusion! Thanks!

The devs have admitted, in this thread, that the game has obtained Apple approval. It was even released for a very short time, accidentally, and then pulled by the devs themselves. The devs have said, again, in this thread, that they have delayed their own release in order to work on the marketing of their game.

Clearly, no marketing for this game has as of yet occurred. It doesn't take a genus to figure out that this game isn't CURRENTLY being hyped or advertised in any way.

Now, they could still market the game before it's release. They could say "we're releasing the game in two weeks." Then, they could start marketing it. They haven't done that yet. The devs have already stated, in this thread, that they have no information at this time regarding a release date.

If they spend a week or two marketing the game, before it is released, even though they have already admitted that the game has recieved approval, that's just going to anger people. People aren't going to want to wait for weeks, knowing already that the devs have ability to release the game at any point.

Or, they could simply release the game now and then try to market the game after it has already been released.

I think both options stink. it's a matter of opinion, granted, but I believe the devs should be hyping/marketing this game right now, as in today, and it obviously cannot be argued at this juncture that they are not.

i don't need a source to prove that there is no hype or marketing happening for this game right now. If I'm wrong and someone else believes that there is, then that person is the one who is going to have to proof it. Because I haven't seen or heard anything. Not here, not pocket gamer, not SlidetoPlay, not IGN, not anywhere.

Thank you :) i misunderstood and was not aware that you were still polishing up the game, i thought you were just sitting on it. That however is good news and i fully believe it should not be released till it is ready, however long that takes. I can assure you though, no matter the release date i will be a buyer no doubt as i am anxiously awaiting this games release. Good luck and hope to be playing soon! :D

@dumaz

They submitted an earlier build, hence the lower res screenshots. Like they said, they want to actually FINISH the game before the marketing. Also, the reason why they never set a release date is so people like you don't get all antsy when it hasn't reached the release.

Obviously nothing will stop you from complaining, try getting some facts before speculating.

And seriously, do some research. The one Apple released was an ALPHA BUILD, which was not the final build of the game.

@ ipodrocks123

We can't nail down a certain date yet because we are still polishing and improving the game day by day, along with working on the iPad version. All we can say is "Very Soon™." :)

As for the work on Episode 2, design and creative teams have been kicking around concepts, story, and the like for the sequel, it's a natural transition as all of this has been done for Episode 1 already.

Hope that helps!

Nine Pound Studios would also like to invite you all to hop into our forums @ www.xenomeonline.com/forums, for more focused in-depth game discussion or Q&A.

We make sure to keep our eyes on the TA forums, so feel free to continue asking any questions/discuss the game in any of our threads here as well!

Yes. I found it rather awkward at first as I am normally a fan of the 'swipe to look' style control scheme, but the the arrangement in this case makes sense as you need to tap the enemy to lock-on/interact, and swiping would interfear with this.
