Great now iPhone/iPod users will keep getting fart apps while ipad gets all these great sweet big games.
I feel iPhone gaming might get beaten out by it's older iPad
I liked have almost psp quality games on my phone.
I'm not going to carry around the iPad outside.
At least the good games came out when the did, it's all going downhill from here.

Question: Why does Bruce Lee wear a skirt?
That's not a skirt. They tried to get the old Oriental gown dress style down, but it's not long enough and it looks like a skirt. It's really not supposed to look like that, but it's no biggie.

So has anyone purchased and played the game? I'm tempted to pick this up, looks good, but not sure how deep the fighting mechanics are.
*edit*
Okay, dropped $5 on this game, I've payed much to for games without reviews before so took a chance...
Glad I did! It's not the deepest game out there, but as a Tekken/Virtua Fighter fan, I'm getting my fix!
There are various modes to go through (as mentioned in the app description). Story seems to be somewhat open where you start by fighting your master and then progress to move up different levels and acquire new skills. Once I got to Level 5, the world opened where I could go for more challenges or fight in VS matches against new competitors.
The fighting mechanics seem a little deeper than just basic punch and kicks. You can string together kicks/punches into combos. There are also "power" moves that usually get followed by a cool animation also. I have found that there are counters and blocks also. The tutorial didn't go too much into the deeper mechanics unless they are under a different section.
The main versus mode seems to have a number of fighters to unlock. To start with, you only have Bruce Lee and one other fighter available. I'm honestly not sure how to open others, but have a feeling it's through either beating the vs mode or playing through the story mode.
The AI seems pretty competent and progresses pretty nicely in Story mode. While playing, the AI was blocked and countered and seemed to put up more of a challenge than your average punching bag. There are several difficulties also when you start (beginner, Medium, expert) so the AI was pretty comparable at Medium.
Graphics are really nice! The animation seems fluid and the environments seem really detailed. Compared to other iPad games, this is pretty top notch! Some of the textures are a little blurry, but overall, I am impressed.
Sound is pretty good although I wish some of the hits were louder and meatier. There are some times when it looked like I punched or kicked the crap out of someone, but the bone breaking crunch just wasn't there.
Overall, these are my 15 minute impressions of the game. I want to definitely spend more time with this and feel like my $5 was really well spent! I honestly had not heard of this game and today was the first I had seen it. After the disappointment of how SFIV turned out upscaled to the iPad (borked controls!), this is a breath of fresh air!

Seriously, why do developers keep trying to mimick the way companies approach console games? The reason why they designed their game to have you tapping a button is because they were limited by that button to begin with. This is a whole new hardware, that requires creative thinking and an innovative approach. To create a fighting game that tries to do a bad job at copying something consoles are good for will never be a strong hit, and will never be as fun as it can be.
That's why those controls look horrible. They look like a cheap copy of the past. Those controls have lost their purpose on the iPad. There's little tactile feedback on the location of the button mashing.

I had 5 bucks to spend on a game and discovered this one on the app store. I am a moderate fighting game fan, with my favorite series being DOA. yes, I totally agree the iPad needs DOA.
I have to say, this game is very good. I can't believe it isn't talked about more. The controls are actually quite good by my standards (this is the first iPad/iPhone fighting game I have tried, though). The fighting styles feel like there is some serious depth to them. So far I have only been playing the story mode, which is presented very well and leads you through the different events at a good pace.
I tend to like more realistic fighting games and this game fills that spot nicely.
Oh and yes, this is my first post, but I'm not a shill. Just had to say that because I never trust first posters myself :p

Welcome to the forums, Lunged. I'm getting an iPad in a few days and this is one of the first games I'm planning to buy. Your opinion is certainly reassuring. Thanks.

Has anyone else noticed that any opponent can be defeated by holding down and tapping kick repeatedly? The rest of the game is great, but what good is a fighter that can be systematically beaten so easily?

Maybe because some developers try to make their game for a system without as many limits on screen size, power, and graphics...so they make the iPad the first choice then try to make it work on th iPhone later? Or they just couldn't get the performance right in the iPhone version, but the iPad version runs fine so they released it...no need to hold off on the ipad version.

I finally had a chance to try this (an iPad was dropped into my lap recently, and Bruce Lee was the second title I bought), and here is my in- and output:
Bruce Lee is an extremely ambitious title, in many ways close to brilliance, but ultimately extremely flawed.
The visual are mostly great. Some of the best on the iPad. The content is even better, with many fighters, quite advanced combat mechanics, different modes, and a surprisingly deep story mode (as compared to the normal fighting game 9-stages-then-boss-model). The sound is good, the presentation is acceptable, and feature-wise, only online multiplay is lacking.
But the queuing system is a mockery of the whole fighting genre, and completely and utterly ruins the game. Like many other fighting titles, the game allows you to "queue attacks", which means that additional buttons quickly pressed during an attack sequence result in further attacks once the current attack sequence is done, or an extended attack sequence. In fighting games in general, this is an absolutely essential mechanic, since it allows the player to string together advanced combos, and plan on ahead.
In Dragon Warrior, however, the queuing system has gone absolutely bonkers, to the point of preventing the player from doing any of the above. Attacks remain in the queue so long that your fighter will actually begin the second round with attacks corresponding to the last buttons you pressed in the first round.
More importantly, attacks are not broken by the opponent interrupting you, something that is standard fare in just about EVERY fighting game ever made. This means that if you execute an attack sequence, but is brought to the floor by an opposing attack, you character will stand up on his own, and proceed to attack your opponent with a few kicks before the attack queue is cleared.
More often than not, your perfect chance for a devastating (and stylish, for Dragon Warrior IS very well animated) attack is ruined by the fact that your fighter is still perform commands from a few seconds ago.
I've absolutely no idea why anyone would make a game in this way. It flies in the face of much reason and common sense, and makes it exceedingly hard to master (something that can often be a good thing, but not in this case) and enjoy any advanced combat mechanics in Bruce Lee, beyond basic button mashing and a few combos (in order to perform a combo, you often have to wait for the queue to clear, and take damage in the meantime, which is not the exercise in tactics and planning it might sound like. You actually have to spend time watching your fighter perform old moves, no longer applicable, since your opponent is somewhere else, ducking, striking you in the back, etc).
The AI helps in creating an exhibition in frustration and futility by being utterly predictable, and helpless in the face of many attacks. For example, when playing Bruce, going in with a low blow to the stomach, followed up by a jump kick to the face, will allow you to play through most (and possibly all) of the game. Of course, you can just stop doing this to avoid ruining the game, but it still hints at a very basic AI, and it is still a flaw that you have to avoid certain standard attack sequences because the AI has no way of guarding against them.
However, should the two game-breaking flaws above be resolved in future updates, Dragon Warrior will be one of the most amazing games in the App Store, and one of the better fighters I've played, for ANY platform.
Here's to that hope.

After the update, they seem almost non-existant! There are a few situations where an opportunity will be lost, thanks to a queued attack that feels as if it should have been flushed well over a second ago, but mostly, the game responds to my input just as I expect it. With the changes to the AI in the update, I barely have anything left to bitch and whine about ;)
I am actually enjoying the game really, really much now. For me, it is already the de facto realistic fighter on the iDevices, and I've already put more playtime into it than into SF4, closing in on Blades of Fury. I'm posting an update to my review (mirrored in the iPhone version thread, since I actually prefer the handling of the iPhone for action games. It feels more like a traditional console controller) above to reflect these pleasant changes.
Drastically updated Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior impressions (written for the iPhone version, but mostly just as applicable for the iPad version):
