Played this about 30 minutes...the graphics are very nice and I really like how the control pad is wherever you put your finger. there are a ton of modes. The only thing I don't like about the controls is the bomb button is put in the middle of the screen, which is hard to reach quickly. Overall I am very impressed.

Bizarre Creations follow up with a press statment on Kotaku website saying the Following "The iPad is an exciting new device, the idea of Geometry Wars running on it really appealed to us and we considered it to be a good fit," he says. "As far as the iPhone...who says we're skipping it?"

Hi! First post :)

I'm loving the game so far... I played the first and second on the Xbox-360 a TON. I probably fall in to the hardcore category so knowing that I don't realistically expect a straight 1:1 experience since the controls are so different.

Still - I am a little disappointed by the performance. It's definitely playable in the beginning but my roommate and I have having difficulty playing when the frame-rate drops during higher scoring games - the controls become very unresponsive. I've also noticed that the music get's out of sync pretty easily the more the frame-rate seems to drop.

I didn't really notice how bad the music syncing problem could be until I saw my girlfriend play Deadline - it seems like if you never really ramp up to heavy spawns that the music stays very close to the time value, but when I play I typically get the "big build up finale" for Deadline's audio track about 30 seconds out from the clock! This is a bummer because listening to the music instead of watching the clock is a far better experience in my opinion. :)

Anyway - on some level I'm still riding the high of taking GW with me on the road... but hope that as you guys get your hands on actual iPad hardware that maybe some of the kinks can be ironed out. I think the game could suffer a graphical hit if it means the performance is better. The sad thing is I'm actually considering returning my iPad and just buying the "S" version later so performance isn't a problem!

Are you guys planning any updates?

Thanks!

I'm loving this - was a fan of the 360 version, but since I rarely use that system any more, I'm glad I can play this on the go. It's addictive as ever, and the vector graphics just look insanely vibrant on the iPad's stunning monitor!

I was very hesitant to spend $10 on an iPad game. What finally convinced me was having the 7 games modes. Well that, plus the sick graphics. The controls aren't the sharpest in the world, though. Hopefully they'll improve them with an update.

The moving / shooting virtual dual stick works quite well, it's just the smart bomb icon placement which is plain stupid. It's like they forgot to add it, and the last second, they left it up to an enemy of Activision to figure out the best spot to put it.

No wonder why it costs $10, did anyone notice the publisher?

If it wasn't made by them then I would be more tempted, but I really dislike their persistence in attempting to manipulate and take advantage of the gaming market so this will be avoided (no matter how much I liked the original) :(

The controls need a lot of work. I've messed around with the control options and it never feels right. PewPew2 on the other hand has great controls for a game like this.

The thing that really kills this game is where the bomb button is...I've died so many times because the button is in the middle of the screen...I have no idea what the developers were thinking when they put that there. This game is amazing on the Xbox 360, but it's crap on the iPad. Personally, I'd wait out until they fix the controls and bomb button placement...it's not even worth playing. Waste of money.

I don't understand why people are having so much trouble reaching the central bomb button. In all the GWT games I've played (hundreds since it was released), I've missed the bomb button fewer than a dozen times. In contrast, either button- or shake-activated bombs go off by accident in games such as Meteor Blitz.

The following GWT gameplay clip (Deadline mode) demonstrates the "grip" I use, which allows relatively easy access to the central button. I've been #1 in Kings and Titans (now #2 in the former, #7 in the latter), and am currently #1 in Sequence @ 40m and #2 in Deadline @49m.

The 7 modes of GWT are far better than the "infinity" modes of PP2. The geom-based multiplier system, black holes, and reflective gates add considerable complexity. Plus, some shapes actually chase you, and disperse when fired upon, whereas in the other game the enemies just roam around release bullets when destroyed; mainly they just crowd into that small space and overwhelm you. PP2 looks like a student project next to GWT, and plays pretty much the way one would expect a generic GW clone to play. It was worth the $2, but really can't be stacked up to GWT value-wise.

PP2 would never make it to the DS, PSP Go, Xbox live, or PSN. GWT would still make it to each of those platforms if it were released today as the first incarnation of GW.

I hate the GWT controls. It was a about precise movement in the 360 XBLA titles. On iPad the controls aren't precise at all to me.

That is so uncomfy and ANNOYING. I hope the creators weren't expecting most gamers to play in the same crappy way.

Meteor Blitz HD >>> Geometry Wars.

If the controls weren't so bad on Geometry Wars it might be the other way around. And the button to blow everything up is in the worst possible place. If a Lite version of GW was available I wouldn't have lost money buying the worst GW game ever made.

Perhaps because 90% of us are still waiting for the ****ing release.

If you're referring to a iphone or ipod touch release of this game, that ain't gonna happen. As if ever. They would set the price point at 9.99, but nobody would be willing to pay 9.99 for this type of a game on the iphone, so the price would inevitably race to the bottom, and end up selling at somewhere between 2.99 and .99. The developer has no intention of ever selling this game at that price. Therefore, they will never port this game to the iphone.

I have been trying to resist this game ever since it's release because of price but today I bought it. The effects are really amazing to see on the ipad, the controls are great, and the gameplay is excellent to me. The only thing that that I noticed is an occasional slowdown but it doesn't happen often and doesn't seem to really affect the gameplay so far for me.

Worth the money to me. Bring on some sequels :).

Hey Gang,

I just got this reply when asking about an update that will do something about the Smart Bomb controls!

Hello Lord Gek…

Just got your email sent through to me… In answer to your question, there is an update coming soon that allows the user to choose different ways of activating the bomb:

- The Swipe (user’s right thumb swipes the button)
- The Double Tap (does what it says on the tin)

Hope that helps, let us know what you think of it when it’s out!!

Cheers.

Three big problems with your argument:
1. They've already stated the contrary
2. There's nothing stopping them from just having it as one universal app that sells for 9.99, so people don't need to buy someoverpriced piece of hardware to play it.
3. It makes no sense from a business point of view. They would make far more money selling a version for 2.99 than they do by locking out 90-95% of their potential customers.

The problem is that this company's too much of a goddamned mess to post proper updates about upcoming releases and dates.

This was one of my favourite download games on the 360, and while I haven't played it for probably close to 2 years or so, the opportunity to rediscover it again on the iPhone seemed too good to pass up.

Well, while I have to say the game is every bit as good as I recalled and I've no regrets about the purchase, the thing that really hit home is how spoiled we've been with games of this type on the iDevice.

Meteor Blitz. Isotope. Critical Wave. Abstract War. Pew Pew. Just off the top of my head. And the truth is - and this is coming from a long time fan - all of the above are every bit as good generally, and in some ways clearly superior to Geometry Wars. All at a significantly lower price.

I'm sure those like myself will want to pick this up regardless, and like myself have no regrets about the purchase. I can't help thinking though, that I could not recommend this game over any one of the ones above to a newcomer in good faith. Neither could I blame anyone coming to this game for the first time, after playing any of the ones above, for wondering what all the fuss is about.
Thanks for review, Gabrien. Thats all I needed to know.

I really like how the control pad is wherever you put your finger.
That is one of the worst features for me. I prefer fixed positioning with ability to move the position in a settings menu. I have issues where my finger comes off the screen just enough to cause the joypad to reposition without me realizing it which can cause me to die unexpectedly when I move my finger but the ship doesn't go where I expected it to.

This game is finally worth playing...the fixed the moronic bomb placement button. Can now double tap to activate the bomb...makes a huge difference in the gameplay. Should have waited until the price went down though, never played it after it was released due the horrible and completely idiotic way to trigger the bomb.

Before this update, the ipad had its own leaderboards. Just after updating it appears that all ipad native scores are gone and replaced with scores from the iphone/ipod version. I took these screenshots a while back. All those scores are gone, including my 19 million world record for Waves on ipad, which was still there as of this morning when i checked it. I hope everyone writes activision requesting that they fix this problem, or rates ithe ipad app to reflect that its leaderboards are broken (I was #2 @ ~9 million on Titans before the update).

On the iphone/ipod I'm still #1 on King (lukwtwz), but it bites to have all the ipad scores gone.

Unless the ipad leaderboards return, I'll have to play as lukwtwz on ipad against people playing Evolved in slow motion on a 1st gen iphone. At least I still own #1 on King Mode @70+ million.

That 19 mill on Waves was still good for #1 as of this morning, and had been there for weeks. I was nearly tied for first on Titans at 9 mill. The iphone version is easier, and thus should have different leaderboards. That's why the top Evolved score in ipad was about 150 million lower than #1 on iphone, and waves #1 was over 40 million lower.

The update fixed my main complaint with the game on the iPhone and iPad: now you can play the game in whatever orientation you want. Before you had to cover the speaker on the iPad and the iPhone 4 when you played, which was annoying. Hoping for an update for the iPhone 4's retina display soon. The developers seem pretty active at putting out updates. The game looks good on the iPhone 4 now, but it could really be stunning with retina display optimization.

Funny thing is, if they offered me a fruit basket as consolation, I would accept as long as it said somewhere on the basket, or on a card, that they were sorry for purging the scores, but that doing such somehow served the greater good. That would at least show honor on their part.

Simply purging a whole database without giving anyone a warning seems callous in the most charitable assessment, and downright malacious in the worst. The irony is that the ipad account was called "legacy account." I had just written several hours earlier in a forum thread how this one game never crashed or cheated me out of a score made while online. The way some of these companies first promote the entertainment value of score competition for their products, and then wantonly purge the score records whenever it suits their whim, just reeks of fraud. I'm sure gamers at large will gradually begin to see it that way too.

Some will always say "get a life" but the same could be said anytime someone checks the score for a football game or the outcome of an olympic match in which the opponents are doing the same old, same old, century after century. At least in videogames there's novelty.

now you can play the game in whatever orientation you want. Before you had to cover the speaker on the iPad and the iPhone 4 when you played, which was annoying.

Ahhh, that's what I'm hoping for.

Funny thing is, if they offered me a fruit basket as consolation, I would accept as long as it said somewhere on the basket, or on a card, that they were sorry for purging the scores, but that doing such somehow served the greater good. That would at least show honor on their part.

Sure, if a company doesn't forewarn owners of their product that they are going to wipe out all previous records of high scores then some may be upset. Honestly it's not that big of a deal. This will clear server space and I'm sure people who were at the top of these leader boards will find their way there again. Pretty much everyone that owns the game and hasn't played it in a while or people who have been getting bored of the gameplay or people who adore the game can see this as an opportunity, so it covers pretty much everybody.

I don't get it. Suppose they gave you a warning. What would you do with it? And how are they supposed to warn you? There's no method that I know of for app publishers to send messages to the people who buy their apps. Apple doesn't give them contact information.

Push notifications. They know every person that has the game. But besides that you're absolutely right. If people are forewarned...what are they going to do? Take screenshots of their scores. And then what?

Are you sure you're not a rep for activision? They could have warned Geometry Wars owners numerous ways, not least of which could be Twitter, their support forum, here on toucharcade - you name it. They're online, the last time I checked. At least then people could have taken last minute screenshots of the unadulterated iPad leader boards instead of the hacked or otherwise exploited iPhone lists. Anyway, I'm going to get a refund one way or another.

Your argument sounded reasonable until you said, "I'm going to get a refund one way or another." Good luck with that.

Maybe a class-action suit on behalf of all those deprived of their high scores.

People are this desperate for glory? It's a game. You really have to take a screenshot of your precious scores so you can brag about them?

Whatever happened to playing games for... oh what was it... oh yeah, the fun?

For what? What will you say is your reason? That your high scores were wiped out? If that's all you have to complain about I can pretty much guarantee you are not going to get a refund. Apple is not very lenient in their refund rules.

Edit: sorry for the double post. ( Don't know if replies really count though ;) )

I don't care for leaderboards as they are a waste. Get out of the house people and do something more productive! :p

Wooo thanks master, you deserve my admiration and adoration for learning us the life and for such wise words.

I also don't care of leaderboards but if I would care, then I can understand how weird it would be to have high scores deleted.

Sometimes it's nice to be able to see how other people are doing so you can understand what is a good score. So I think that's an advantage of shared leaderboards. But for that purpose it doesn't matter if they get wiped sometimes.

Retro games went the way of mass entertainment when they lost the sporting edge provided by score competition. Sure, it's absurd, but no more so than anything else people use for sport, such as keeping track of the results of a favorite sports team or whatever. No one cares about this one man team, but I happen to care because I'm the one playing and not just watching.

But just because I know that it means nothing in the end does not mean that the company from which a newly released game, purchased for $10 with the understanding that an iPad "legacy account" would function as the name implies, ought to conclude the same on everyone else's behalf and simply purge those records as if they were never intended to have any permanence in the first place. That would be the strongest basis for a class action suit against activision in this case; they got extra money from ipad owners buying on launch day who might have reconsidered if it had been known that online scores would ultimately have no permanence. I might not have worn my thumbs out in some cases if i had known that the scores will just get deleted within a few months by a heartless corporation with zero support (e.g. Click the "app support" button in the app store to see what i mean).

Yes, they should refund $5 to anyone who paid the $10 at launch for their misrepresented product. But then they send in more reps to squash the plight of the lone gamer, to trivialize and ridicule instead.

Why don't you send that e-mail/letter/telegram to Activision, then share with us the response that you receive.

Excuse me? Because I have not much sympathy for your missing high scores, I must be getting paid by Activision to scorn you? Are you serious?

It's tempting, but I've got both versions of the XBLA game.

They're both excellent, mind you.. :)

On the contrary. Grubjelly is actually reasonable AND insanely good at scoring high scores. It's a winning combination.
