You can change the placement of the controls to your liking.

Pause > Options > Customize Interface, then drag the buttons to your most comfy placement.

Agreed. If the buttons were placed more accessibly, this game would be pretty awesome on the iPad. I bought this one a few days ago and my hands hurt after playing for a few hours. Too much unnatural stretching to hit all the onscreen buttons. I think I actually prefer the iPhone version.
