No, no. We added explosions.
(not kidding)

Zen Bound 2 has three different game modes, first being the classic rope-winding from ZB1. The new paint bombs add a new variation to the theme, with some levels having paint bombs attached to the object itself (as seen in the iTunes screenshot with yellow dots on the red cubic object) or paint bombs on the rope (as seen in the teddybear photo).

The new variations change the gameplay to be more streamlined in case of object bombs, or to be more resource-management oriented with rope boms.

We didn't want to make just a version with just upgraded graphics, our goal was to make a game we would be confident to call a sequel. That's why this is Zen Bound 2 and not Zen Bound HD.

Jani, anything to say about when ZB2 will hit iPhone?

I'll copy-paste this from the original ZB2 thread:

Bringing the current ZB2 to an iPhone 3GS involves re-working the UI and going through the entire art content of the game. This is not a small task, it will take 1-3+ months depending on many factors (like possible Stair Dismount updates).

Bringing the current ZB2 to earlier hardware is technically theoretically possible, but involves re-designing the existing art content, optimizing everything, re-implementing lots and lots of menu and rendering stuff... frankly we have no clue how long that would take, or if it is something that makes financial sense. Or if the compromises in visual quality is something those would be happy with who have seen how the game looks on the more powerful hardware.

The summary of the above is that yes, we want to have ZB2 available on the iPhone as well, but how and when is a complex beast to tackle, and it's wise to not expect anything too soon.

Heads-up: Zen Bound 2 update 1.0.2 will be submitted by the end of the week.
Fixes include:
- Game no longer fails to start if language setting of the iPad is not English (shame on us!)
- White-screen at level-end situation corrected
- Increased control sensitivity
- Minor performance tweaks

It's great. I have bought both, and both are excellent. ZB2 is a complete game unto itself, so if you like the ZB1 style on your iPhone, you should love the new shapes of ZB2.

The screenshots speak for themselves, the game is gorgeous.

I would have been disappointed if this had been a port, as so many of the games were, but it is whole new content - and then you still have the original, but it looks much better... I am jealous that there were promo codes (although I bought on Saturday)- but I think the purchase was a fair price point for the content... and I am pretty stingy on that sort of thing as my sig may tell you...

No, no one could... Remember that the iPad store opened on March 30 or maybe even Mar 29?.. Anyways -the app store had over 1000 apps prior to anyone even getting it, so no one had an opportunity to test out their app prior to releasing it..

Even a lot of the current apps are not being tested as the devs live in other countries, and those countries have not recieved iPads yet....

No, I'm pretty sure some developers had access to iPads already... Otherwise, Apple wouldn't be able to make a lot of $$$, especially if all the apps didn't work because they didn't have the chance to test it on an iPad.

It's the reason why we at subatomic Studios decided to test before releasing cool new things in 'Fieldrunners for the iPad'. We wanted to insure we had the game running smoothly, nearly bug free and fun before adding new things that could create performance issues, balance and gameplay issues as well.

That being said, Zen Bound 1 was pretty sweet, and I'll probably try Zen Bound 2 at some point soon!

This game is fantastic! I've never played Zen Bound 1, nor any game quite like this. The graphics, controls and even the sounds are top notch. These types of mind games are my cup of tea and I'm having a blast with it. Who knew wrapping rope around a figurine could be so fun, lol.

I do have one question/suggestion: Is there a way to quickly unravel the rope to a certain point? Like an undo feature?

And for unraveling, unfortunately the only two ways are to manually unravel, or click the bottom tab to bring up the menu and then restart the level.

to the two guys interested:
the soundtrack is pretty much done. since zb1 and it's soundtrack are binaural (headphone) optimized and the Zen Bound 2 music slightly optimized for smaller speakers (as the onboard ones or headphones), it was really good to be able to remix Zen Bound 1 and 2 tracks and combine some into new songs, ones I basically would've originally done if I had not purposefully been doing 2-minute songs to fit the game session lengths.

Also, the soundtrack isn't specifically optimized for speakers or headphones, it's a remixing and re-mastering of the game soundtrack material as opposed to the soundtrack offered with ZB1 (sorry, you two, you're going to have to buy both, luckily most of the ZB1&2 levels are also significantly different :P).

Coming to an update or release this spring! :D

Thanks for the update. Although I'm satisfied with the overall quality of ZB 2, bugs of the type evident in the following screenshots (same session, two different angles) still need to be ironed out. It doesn't happen too much, but it's not very rare either.

The simulation traces back a certain number of rope segments at all times. In some cases the rope slips loose just as the simulation stops evaluating it. This causes the rope to remain stuck in the air like in the screenshots.

Simulating more segments wouldn't fix the issue, because it would simply move that behavior further down the rope. (And make the game heavier to calculate.)

In other words, we don't currently have a change in mind that would improve the behavior. The easiest solution is that you can always unwind the rope a few steps and it will sort itself out.

I waited for a couple weeks before posting this to see if it was fixed thinking it would be because of how sluggish it is...

First off, I enjoyed ZB1 and bought ZB2. I have no probs buying again for limited differences. However, I am extremely disappointed by the framerate. I think it literally needs tripled or more. I am not trolling and I am not trying to insult anyone. I like the premise of the app/game, but at this point I would rather delete it for a while until they fix the framerate. It is the poorest of any iPad apps I have downloaded. All the other apps (iphone or ipad native) run 10x smoother on iPad compared to my 3g phone - except this one..

I did reset and only ran ZB2 but it is still really bad..like ~15fps when it should be targeting 60fps. I got excited when the latest update came out and said performance optimizations, but sadly I noticed nothing different at all. I really want to enjoy this game I just can't yet!

Thank you for listening - I hope no one gets offended as I just want to enjoy the app. Nothing at all needs changed except this but it really needs it in a big way.

Are there any plans to address the poor framerate?

05-10-2010, 04:04 PM
With its current visuals the game is running pretty much as fast as the device can handle, and we have spent a significant amount of time optimizing the game (just take our word for it...). There are some things we may attempt to re-implement in a totally different way to see if there's a performance benefit, but these tasks are a lot of work for potentially minimal performance gain.

However, work still continues with ZB2 (good stuff), but I can't go into specifics just yet.

That is a shame, I would even welcome worse visuals for better framerate if possible but I appreciate the hard work you guys put into it. It is still a truly unique app and I spent some good time with ZB1... but ZB2 is just to choppy to handle for me personally. It does look great though and if you can find a way to improve performance it would be the best app for iPad in my opinion. I am no developer and it is easy for me to ask for the world. I know you guys have to hear a lot of this so I apologize if I am piling on.

Thank you very much for the honest response!

Coming soon (still in final stages of development) is update 1.1.0 to Zen Bound 2 on the iPad. It will bring the following improvements:

- Tree of Introduction: a new small set of levels that introduce the gameplay mechanics of ZB2 in a concise way. From the feedback we got the impression that many users and even some reviewers didn't play the game enough to find the new gameplay that we've implemented, so this new level set is designed to address that issue.
- iPod Music uses a pop-over and not a separate screen.
- A "More Games" button in the main menu which shows a pop-over of our other games and also games we like.
- A new Ghost Monkey tune in the credits screen.

So - you might not believe me, and Frand is not paying me anything for this endorsement - but I gotta say that ZB2 (like PVZ, Real Racing, Labyrinth 2, and others) is TOTALLY worth spending the extra dollars. It is so much more than just the graphics update - it is really a new game, and so you are really missing out IMO on a great game. Keep in mind that ZB and ZB2 are different games as well, only sharing the same sort of mechanics. Anyways, you are missing out if you enjoyed ZB.

If it were ONLY a graphic update - I would have more empathy with your position, as I don't like double dipping, but the game is vastly different.

Oh - and ZB at it's cheapest was $1.99 so it is only a $6 upgrade.... :p

Nice, will definitely consider this at 2.99 as I never played the first one.

For three bucks, this is a great game to get - it's relaxing, yet challenging at the same time. It's a beautiful game, and I can't wait to see what it will look like on the iPad. I've been playing on my iPod Touch for a while, and I really enjoy it.

Three dollars makes this a must-buy for me!

Might be good to consolidate the discussion to the "official" thread:
Zen Bound 2 on TA forums (http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=20487)

ZB2 won't be an iPad-exclusive title for much longer :)

Hope this does really well for you. I was an early adopter :) and am very happy with the purchase. Having ability to put on my new iPhone 4 sweetens the deal for me. Everyone else being able to get it for a great deal hopefully will make you a ton of money so you can come up with some other phenomenal apps!

I had been eyeing this game for a while. The price reduction sealed the deal! Bought!

> Zen Bound 2 has all the 76 levels from Zen bound 1
> It has over 100 levels with an addo gameplay – Paint Bombs
> The ipad only now title is awaiting a universal update so makes it playable on smaller iPads
> 45 mins of Ghost monkey music
> Tree of Tribute, featuring guest stars from independently developed iPhone games
> Zenbound was never lower than $1.99

Sounds like a NEAT deal

Is the current price of $2.99 a temporary sale that will go back up when ZB2 goes universal?

No iPad here, but I'm tempted to jump in anticipation of the update.

"We really can't answer that. While we're not in the habit of quick price changes, pricing does depend on sales."

I missed one more point... ZenBound is also available @ the same price
This can be the Deal breaker for a few.

I think I kno wht Secret exit is doing here...
They want to sell their games from their iTunes account, not from chillingo's actually Chillingo gave them the exposure & all that, kinda sad tactic in the run for the money,
Having said that... I think the price is going to go down if this does not attract many ppl to buy zenbound 2 for secret exit as they would have speculated

I think I am talking what is not good for their business, but what they are doing is unethical, not really sure if Chillingo is charging them to high or something?

Frand -

Any reason to update the iPad v 1.1.0 to 2.0? It looks like the 2.0 made it universal, but are there are improvements that would make it worthwhile?

Achievements, performance improvements, ability to install the same game to any other iDevice you may own.

Huh, I never tried the original before, so this seems like a steal at 2.99... AND it's universal? Psychedelic. I just wish iOS 4 was out for the iPad so ZB2 could shine better with the retina display and everything.

Retina Display is Apple's fancy name for the high-density display on the iPhone 4, it has nothing to do with IOS4. With OS4 your iPad will get multi-tasking, but nothing short of a huge factory in China will make your iPad's screen into a massive retina display. Sorry.
