Thought we should have a thread to discuss. I think the game looks pretty entertaining, the graphics are well done for sure. ngmoco has been quite quiet latley, so I assume this is what they have been working on...hopefully it holds up once released.

I'll be picking this up for my kids I'm sure. Not that my 2 year old needs ANOTHER reason (aside from flick bowling and wave blazer) to ask for "i-pawd??"

Looks interesting...
I might pick this one up, depends on the price
It could be similar to ihusky
and Nintendogs on the Nintendo DS
But it is always nice to have some kind of pet simulation game :)

Hmmm... it does appear to have a little better graphics than my Giga Pet...

I won't be picking this up. Nintendogs was a lot of fun and all, but I just don't see myself playing anymore dog-owning sims, especially when I have a lil' dog right here with me :)

Personally i don`t think it`ll be a hit. I can`t imagine people paying to evolve a dog. But i might be wrong, lets see =p
P.S : The game sure has good graphics and is polished O_o

i will probably be getting this. it looks kind of fun. i only wish the graphics were more realistic like in the iPuppy games that are already out.
also just to let the ngmoco fans know, they just tweeted that worfu is almost dont and then topple2 will be soon to follow. and they are working on an update to rolando that they want to get out very soon that will bring more levels! woohoo!
IMO, those dogs are kinda...ugly? Not cute or realistic at all compared to Nintendogs.

I like the dogs' cartoon look, having uber detailed dogs would probably make the game lag and objects be rough...

Aw, yes, nothing's cuter than a couple megabytes of data. I just don't see the appeal in this game. Pokemon, yes, because there's a point. This is made for petless people. I've got my own boxer that I can hug and play with. The dogs, like some said, are way too cartoonish.

Ehh, it's ok for people who like that kind of stuff. I can't say that I'd spend money taking care of a a virtual pet and all. I mean, it's cute and everything but you just don't get an authentic feeling from having a real pet and cuddling up and playing with it since, really now, it's just a virtual pet. It's never be like a real dog. So, I wouldn't buy it but that's just me.

Using your logic video games period are pointless. Whats the point of playing Tower defense games? Its never like your really out there assigning defenses to your "fort"
Its just something fun....no one said this is the alternative to buying a real dog. Whats wrong with having both?

Yes but there's a difference. You can have a dog in real life. You can't build towers with machine guns, missiles, and magical elements to fight monsters, bugs, robots, and others in real life. You can't suit up and go fight aliens or face another person in a death match and you can't go and grab an m16 and fight in a war(i guess you could but there's a chance of being killed). There's many things in video games that are very appealing because of the fact that everyone wants to do them but it's just not possible in real life. This game is so it's not appealing in my mind. And this is just my opinion. There's no point in anyone having to think or believe the way I do.

And there are aspects in the game that arent available to everyone. Not everyone can train their pet to pounce on balls and become a firefighter or scientist. And why is this only for people without pets? Just look at the sims. People love makin virtual humans...whats wrong with dogs. My main point is if this kind of gameplay doesnt appeal to you why even post in the thread? Thats like if i hate TD games and post how stupid Defenders Chronicles is purely because I dont like those style of games.

Why are you taking this so seriously? I already stated that this is just my own opinion and nobody has to think this way. It's just how I think and no one else in the entire world thinks the exact same way as me so just calm down. I won't even bother to say anything more since it'll just cause further argument. I have nothing against you. I just think our views differ. No hard feelings.

I'll just put this out there, anyone remember Sea Monkeys? I remember as a kid how excited I was just to get that small plastic aquarium home from K-Mart to start feeding a small underwater kingdom of Sea Monkeys. When those creatures started to show up fluttering around the water I couldn't believe it! Of course they looked nothing like the picture and my hopes were ultimately dashed when my dad said "Those are just shrimp." Heart broken...I was...(not really but that adds to the story).
Point being people love pets whether they are real or fake. We like to take care of things, it is human nature.
Some people will dig this and some won't. Just like any other game.

My point is if you dont like virtual pet sims why would you post in a thread about one? Its pointless. There wouldnt be anything to drag out. Im gunna go post in defenders chronicles about how it sucks because i dont like TDs lol. Quit hating on games just because you can. Its annoying and counter productive.

Which is what I tried telling Retean. That people have their own opinions. This is a great game, I'm sure and a lot of people will love it and all but it's just not for me and that's all I said. I wasn't trying to force anyone to believe what I did so what's wrong with me voicing my opinion?

So your saying you can post your opinion but when i post comments about your opinions which are basically my opinions im wrong? Why am i not allowed to talk about what someone said about the game? I wasnt aware i was being rude or coming off as angry. I was simply saying that even though YOU feel that its pointless since you can have a real dog that there are many instances where that argument is simply wrong. Am i not allowed to do that?

Did we not just discuss this Retean? *Sigh* And this is the person who was complaining about still talking to him. Some people these days don't even make sense and don't know what they're talking about.
Anyways, the game looks good. As I said before, I wouldn't buy it though. My sister has several Nintendogs games and a pet game for the iPod Touch also. It didn't do much for me although I know this appeals to a lot of people. I guess I'll just wait until it gets released and someone can prove me wrong. I'm almost certain that my sister will be buying this game though so I might give it a shot and if I find it enjoyable, I'll gladly take what I said back. Overall, it's coming along well and the graphics look great.

The difference between this game and the other pet dog sims is that this one you actually do stuff. You train your pet...If 2 people have the game you can send your pets back and forth to each others ipod for pet dates. Pets can have careers and the game utilizes the touch screen with caring for your pet and the accelerometer for playing with it.
I dont understand why people keep comparing this to nintendogs tho. I dont think that will be released on ipod :P
Lets keep the post coming so this thread can stay on the top :P

Maybe you haven't noticed but that's impossible to do since we're having a conversation about the game that this thread is about. It's no problem that you didn't catch it.
Originally, it was planned for a Spring 2009 release.
We don't have an exact release date on either title, but Touch Pets Dogs is expected in the spring.
We first heard mention of TouchPet Dogs at the iPhone Intelligence Party at MacWorld San Francisco in Early January. The game is due for a Spring 2009 release.

Looks like a ripoff of nintendogs to me, bad graphics too. And people are comparing it to nintendogs because this app is copying what nintendogs does, career, training, trading other dogs with other people just like in the ds version.
The only thing it needs now is voice recognized commands like the ds version so when you say sit or lie down the dog responds, then the game will become a complete copy.
Is it just me or does ngmoco love porting successful games from other consoles on to the iPhone? Rolando - locoroco, touchpets - nintendogs

everything in the app store is a ripoff of something. Point being how can you compare this to a game on a different console? You should be comparing it to the other pet sims that are already on the ipod like ihusky which totally blows it out of the water. And what about the people who wanted to try nintendogs but it was 2 expensive or they didnt have a ds? poor mans alternative right here and that is the definition of gaming on the ipod :P

Whether you are a pet owner, animal devotee, or just a lover of all things cuddly, there's probably an app for that. If nothing has yet tickled your fancy (or rubbed your belly), ngmoco might have what you've been searching for with their new Touch Pets series headed to iPhone.
The first entry, Touch Pets: Dogs, is being developed with the expertise of virtual pet veteran, Andrew Stern, who worked to create the pivotal Petz franchise in the late 90s. We recently had a chance to discuss his newest project with him via e-mail.
"I love animals, and recently have had pets I was very close to," Stern told us in an email.
"I think the thing that excites me the most about creating virtual pets is the art, craft and technology involved in creating the illusion of life: how a combination of artificial intelligence, expressive animation and a direct interaction user interface all work together to form this virtual living being that has emotion, awareness and can form relationships with you. It is a fascinating pursuit," he told us.
http://img.slidetoplay.com/20090707/touchpetsdogs5.jpg
Virtual pet sims have been years in the making, but this one is looking to take advantage of some of the iPhone's unique features. For starters, Stern says, the iPhone "has better rendering capability than the PCs I developed on my previous virtual pet projects."
"I think there’s something very compelling about having a fluidly-alive virtual dog right at your fingertips, that you can carry around and play with anywhere you are."
It was probably Nintendo DS's Nintendogs that really gave us our first taste of a truly user-friendly and portable pet care experience. You'll probably notice some similarities between that game and Touch Pets: Dogs, but there are some key differences worth noting.
http://img.slidetoplay.com/20090707/touchpetsdogs6.jpg
"The quality of the illusion of life combined with the immediate, direct interaction the puppies offer; the depth of the stats, goals and careers for the puppies that we’ve created; and of course, the ability for you to socialize and network your dogs with your friends dogs, and follow their friendships and romances over time" really set this one apart, Stern told us.
The unique touch controls and motion sensing capabilities of the iPhone could take pet sims to the next level. "You can draw hand gestures to train your puppies to sit, lie down, raise up, hop around, and do all kinds of flips," Stern wrote. "And, you can tilt the phone to roll an Agility Ball around and train your dog to jump over and onto it. It’s really fun."
http://img.slidetoplay.com/20090707/touchpetsdogs1.jpg
Beyond the new interface, the so-called career aspect is equally impressive, if they can integrate it into the basic one-on-one time you spend with your pup. Want your dog to be a crime fighting hero or a scientific slueth? No problem, if you train it right.
"Your role is to prepare your dog to go off and accomplish a career on their own; they run offscreen and come back a little while later succeeding or failing the current Career Step," Stern described. "To do this, you warm up your puppies by feeding and doing Strength Training with them, you equip them with tools such as Laser Rangefinders, GPS or Grappling Hooks as the case may be."
http://img.slidetoplay.com/20090707/touchpetsdogs3.jpg
"You can pursue puppy careers in Search and Rescue, Crimefighting, Science, Politics, and even become a Celebrity dog," Stern said.
The best part is that you won't be tackling this alone, thanks to play dates. Stern walked us through the process. "[Play dates] are asynchronous, meaning that I can invite your puppy over to play on my device while you are simultaneously playing with your puppy on [yours]. When that happens, it’s sort of like parallel universes. But whatever effects I have on your dog – such as feeding her, giving her attention, even getting her to fall in love [with] my dog-– those changes shortly thereafter get merged with whatever you’re doing with your dog. You can also set permission levels to say how much or little other players can affect your dog."
Your pals can keep track of what you're doing with your canine companion by following a global Twitter-esque Dog Feed. "[You] can follow other players and read about what they and their dogs are up to. For example, if I’m following you but you’re not following me yet, I can invite your dog to my device, but can’t affect her stats. Once we’re mutually following each other though, then we can care for each other’s dogs."
http://img.slidetoplay.com/20090707/touchpetsdogs2.jpg
What about if your online friend has a mean streak? No worries, because "all interactions are positive in Touch Pets," said Stern. "The worst you can do is to neglect a dog by not feeding or playing with it for a while. Puppies won’t starve (the game automatically feeds them for you) but your dog can become sad and lonely."
"If that happens, all other players in your network will see postings on the Dog Feed such as 'Rex is lonely and needs to be fed' – encouraging you to feed your friends’ dogs if they’re slacking off." Doing so earns you extra Puppy Points, which you can presumably use to unlock new items, clothes, and advancements.
http://img.slidetoplay.com/20090707/touchpetsdogs4.jpg
Whatever you decide to do with your newfound best friend, it seems like Touch Pets is going to allow you to do it in some form. With the online social aspects, the career tracks, and innovative touch and motion controls, this is one to to put on your watch list.
As to what's next for the franchise, Stern was predictably mum on future additions, but we'll be as unsurprised as Droopy if they don't have a follow-up game in the months following its release. Keep your eyes peeled and stay tuned to Slide To Play and the official Touch Pets website for more info as the game nears its release.

I hope ngmoco invites me over to take a dip in the olympic sized swimming pool of money this game is going to make.
Seriously though, when I got a demo of this game at the ngmoco press event at WWDC, all I could think of was how much this game is going to sell. Take the Nintendogs formula:
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2006/01/DSPrintsMoney.jpg
Add in easy plugins for social networking sites, push alerts, internet multiplayer, and everything else they're doing which is just impossible to do on the DS and you get something like this:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/73/195973052_10b4eadea0.jpg
While I'm kind of undecided on how interested core gamers will be in a game like this, Touch Pets will have the same (if not much more) appeal as Pocket God to non-gamers and casual gamers. I don't even need to consult my magic 8 ball to know Touch Pets is going to live a long life on the top ten.

Oh no. It would definitely work with the current devices. They only have those to develop on at the moment anyways, but that would also be terrible for them because a ton of people would hate them for it if they didn't support older devices. That's been proven before with other devs and games.

Why are they not giving us anything on touchpets. There should be a release coming even sooner for touch pets.
They have a video podcast they've been doing for a few months now, and they keep showing people playing Touch Pets and it looks almost done. However, there is one key phrase that someone said during one of the podcasts that I think answers the question about where the game is. They said something to the effect of "...and there are hundreds of different items you can use to interact with your pets", or something like that.
If I had to bet, I'd say coding hundreds of different items to work with all of the possible permutations of animal AI takes longer than you'd think, and might be the reason the game isn't out by now. I could be way off, but that is my guess.

So it could be two or three months out before we see this game even though they said it was very close. It has been almost 7 months so it could be november. Wow

The guys? I am a guy and I like seeing developers cater to all consumers rather than just the male side of gaming. C'mon now they have shown more of TouchPets than Eliminate. I also don't think TouchPets will sell well just to the female iPhone contingent as I see it selling much better than Eliminate at this point to all demographics.
BTW the "play date" feature will probably hook the lonely and single teenage boys in ;). Should be a big hit with couples and families too. It will have a pretty broad audience if they can get the online mechanic correct while keeping it fresh with things to do at the same time.

I figure they are testing the system.Wait till they anounce that it's nearing submission then wait for a month more for it to be submitted then wait for the countdown that leads to the new trailer and a countdown that leads to another countdown then another countdown and finally it will be out.... How are they "playing games with us" by developing iPhone games? I really don't understand all the complainers going on about how ngmoco is someone wronging them by actually putting a layer of TLC on their games that few other developers do. Something tells me the same people who are up in arms over ngmoco taking so long to develop games would be the same people who would be equally up in arms if Touch Pets of Eliminate were released and they were half finished or buggy.
You can't have it both ways. ;)

Exactly! The way they hype their games is what i truly hate and besides what other games beside rolando and rolando 2 ( which was actually made by handcircus) did they have to show for? Ngmoco plays it like they are releasing the next installment of MGS, ever seen a movie teaser that says coming 2011 its pretty annoying!

What is it with you and DLC?
Let me ask you? Did you enjoy all the additional content we get via update? Take rolando 1 for example did you enjoy all the free levels ngmoco gave is without a dime more? Did you find it annoying or did any of you purchase the additional map in flickfishing? Didn't you wonder that this extra map is to much for 99cc when the actual game is just 99cc? How much is the lowest cash transaction in the appstore? If the charging model works for ngmoco don't you think other devs will follow their initiative? Well answer those question and lets talk again :)

That is why i oppose 'microtransactions' so much! It will be easy for a developer to hold back content so that they can charge it as DLC. Take for example an FPS, without the prospect of microtransaction, a dev would've thrown in a 'submachine gun' as part of the full game but due to the prospect of earning extra cash the same dev may hold back in putting that 'submachine gun' and charge it for 99cc.
If you want a better idea of what ngmoco is attempting to do here is a video of the 3.0 keynote

We'll i sincerely hope so, I defended Ngmoco in the past but the notion of them heading the microtransaction revolution ( that of which the xbox 360 community fought so bravely) turned me into a cynic! Much as i love GL, i don't want them to completely dominate the appstore as they work best under the threat of competition.

The game is not even release, how can you call it 'quality game' . You obviously hate it when the device pumps up impressive Gameloft games..every dumb argument you make is against them.. you also said this in another thread ''To be honest, I laughed at right when he said that. The iPod Touch is nowhere in the leagues of the PSP and DS, it has just gained popularity because it was initially emphasized as a media player device; which has become an 'essential' to most consumers, and supposedly it can pull off some decent games and be the host for a numerous amount of utilitites and 'cool' applications- I mean tech demos now. The iPhone OS is nice, but personally, I believe it will never exceed my expectations of a portable gaming device''...you don't want to be proven wrong that the idevice can ever exceed your expectation right, so you greet every advances that the platform make with total bullshit... i been in disagreement with a lot of people here but in the end i also get to respect their opinion when they prove that they can at least respond intelligently.. I think ngmoco is doing a mint job at bringing idevice specific games, such as star defense and rolando, that are based on the control mechanics of the device.
On the other hand Gameloft has developed touch controls for more conventional games and help raise the standard for idevice games. And then there's EA, Freeverse... you just got to see what each does best and take your pick. :)
I'm just waiting to see what this one has to offer in terms of gameplay... it's good to have other games than the standard FPS, RPG, licensed sports games. I'm also looking forward to Kitty's Adventures.
PS: my favourites still are some of the indie devs!;)

First off Gameloft has no cares about customer satisfaction. They pump games out like rabbits pump out offspring. NGmoco actually try to make their games noteworthy. Gamelofts games may be good for the moment, but when people start getting the hang of idevice developement, Gameloft will fade away. That is unless they actually start putting care into their titles.

NGMOCO > GameloftI don't really get this Gameloft vs ngmoco match up, i have reason to believe it started with the release of MC:S! Gameloft started to get love letters because of that game and seeing that ngmoco is releasing an FPS title as well some ngmoco fans starts to get threaten. Of course you can have play dates with plus+ friends, but how else will we earn points, what will be in the leaderboards, and what else will you do besides set up playdates? Will we go to a park, take a walk, enter contests, learn to groom, maybe even make puppies?

All we've been doing is going crazy wondering when the game is coming out and having Gameloft vs. Ngmoco debates!
The Lady from Ngmoco is saying they have no release date. They have been saying coming soon or ready too submit very soon. They have no clue when they are going too release it.

This is not fair the guys will see there shooter game before the gals see the touchpets. I think we have many shooter games no pet games worth anything. I am hoping this one will be. Why is it taking so long too get this game out 8 months. I think coming soon means in 2 or 3 weeks. I guess not too Ngmoco

Hahahaha! I didn't know you can swipe to look in those consoles! Before GL made the scheme fPs games uses the accelerometer to move which made people think that the genre won't work for the iphone. Every self respecting non fanboy will agree that GL was first in these scheme! And why act surprise ngmoco is also known for riping on other games in the past!
Eliminate Thread: (Same argument)
Brothers in arms then terminator salvation after that!
Eliminate Thread:
BIA used it long before ngmoco conceived livefire!
Eliminate Thread:
Well he's not talking about the dual stick obviously, he's talking about the left stick to move/swipe to look scheme which was first used by BIA! The mechanics of the dual stick setup used by idracula and dropship is very similar to geometry wars and is very much different if you implement the same 2 stick with an tps/fps! I do agree that ngmoco rip on GL with this one and there is no shame in admitting ;)
Nova Thread:
Did you even see the vid of this game ( nova ) it blows every sony FPS out of the water and did you even take time to play mc:s? The graphics are better than mgs:po ;) and this just the iceberg of things to come!
Eliminate Thread:
But what if a good player buys energy and another good player didn't? For people with the same skill range what will spell the difference? This is why i keep on exposing the hell out of DLC, most people here don't have a clue. We can easily be exploited unless we equip ourselves with proper knowledge. This bad player vs good player example is very naive, a good player shouldn't be match with a bad player! It is also naive to think that there will be a point that everything will be unlock and money won't matter anymore! Is this the new ngmoco equation bad player+money=good player and good player+money=awesome player! Guys if you don't take my word for it read the IGN article.
Eliminate Thread:
I wouldn't want to get match with you then coz for all i know it is your money and not your skill that is pwning me lol!
**Please don't quote this post!**
Eliminate Thread:
That is exactly what I want, not to crap on ngmoco...( i defended them in the past as well).. but to create a sense of awareness to all consumers here who doesn't have a clue about microtransaction so that ngmoco will be persuaded to proceed with caution on this one. This is not about being a fanboy for me and i know that i'll be hated here for this but i think not enough is being discuss here about DLC... we usually discuss polish, graphics, clones, even 'soul' but thsi is something relevant.... far more relevant!
Personal Insult:
OMG! Somebody else notice lol! Game Reaper pretty much sound like an ngmoco employee... look at his post in nova and sandstorm. And how he always downplay every gameloft announcement
Eliminate Thread:
Thanks for the head up MJ :) Guys read this up, stop being fanboys for a while coz this is what i'm talking about. IGN is concern about microtransaction as well.
Modern Combat Thread:
Wow! Lot of new comers :) welcome to TA and i totally agree with you guys! This game is so good it compeled people to register lol! This totally puts infinityward to shame with their ds effort!
Dungeon Hunter Thread:
Woah that was quick San :) this will occupy the front page of my iphone as well! Hope this gets updated with multi player in the future ;)
**This is turning into an obsession!**
Nova Thread:
Can you honestly give me a game in the appstore that animates better than the enemy in the video? I was wondering why you are so critical of every giant step the platform seems to take towards console-like gaming then i stumble into this http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?p=486930#post486930 you don't want to be proven wrong lol!
Touch Pets Thread:
You bud is just plain dumb...every post just annoyingly dumb! Every cliche about an uninformed gamer applies to you! I hope you finally get your PSPGO and post in the PSP forums instead ! I'm sorry i just got to get it off me! Anyone in disagreement just look at his post  http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?p=486930#post486930
Touch Pets Thread:
We'll i sincerely hope so, I defended Ngmoco in the past but the notion of them heading the microtransaction revolution ( that of which the xbox 360 community fought so bravely) turned me into a cynic!
Eliminate Thread:
Maybe! And i hope they also use the extra time to improve the run animation, the character model run like girls :D
Eliminate Thread:
But giving even the slightest advantage will spell the difference for people with the same skill range. And as i've said why implement this pay system if it's not feasibly sell worthy? What would entice players to buy if its as others said 'not that relevant to gameplay'? It doesn't make sense for ngmoco to bother with this in the first place if they don't make it worth the buy of those who are willing!
Nova Thread:
Halo 3 is in what platform again? And Nova is for the iphone right? Do you mind posting your thoughts here http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=25052 i think they are talking about you lol!
**Getting depressing**
Eliminate Thread:
Why would they implement a credit system if it won't be appealing enough to tempt someone to go ahead and buy?
Touch Pets Thread:
That is why i oppose 'microtransactions' so much! It will be easy for a developer to hold back content so that they can charge it as DLC. Take for example an FPS, without the prospect of microtransaction, a dev would've thrown in a 'submachine gun' as part of the full game but due to the prospect of earning extra cash the same dev may hold back in putting that 'submachine gun' and charge it for 99cc.

Thank you for the wonderful preview Hodapp. Though I'm sure there will be a crowd of people (I am one of them) who will be very disappointed in the on-line requirement of the game. This really limits the use on the Touch. But the game does look very appealing. I've been interested in the game since it was first announced earlier in the year.
They must realize the on-line requirement is going to be an issue. That pretty much limits me to playing in areas of the house I don't normally play on the Touch. I figure you won't even be able to use it through the Starbucks/iTunes deal as that is only for iTunes/AppStore support. I don't live in a city where there are Wi-Fi spots all over the place.

This 'online only' decision has the potential to mess up sales. It's like they completely forgot their demographic and went after the older/mature crowd. I thought it would be a massive hit, but now I'm not so sure.
Hodapp
10-01-2009, 03:11 PM
Something I just thought of with this TouchPets Dogs online only stuff, there was a post on the ngmoco blog a while ago where Alan Yu discussed the analytics taking place inside of each ngmoco game-
Basically, inside our games is a very powerful analytics package. We call it our eyes and ears. In that I can tell how many Maze Finger mazes you have completed, where you might get stuck in Topple – it was level four, by the way – where people touch the screen in Rolando.
Or even the average play session, which is around 22 minutes – that’s something which, as an aside, shows that this really isn’t just a casual platform, that’s a core gamer-style stat.
So our platform talks back to us, gives us a relationship with the consumer and means we can live tune the software seamlessly for the user without an update. That stuff is invisible to the user.
If they can do all this, I can almost promise that they've run the statistics on how many players are playing their games while connected to the internet versus offline players. Something tells me this was a very calculated decision that was made because that magic number of the percentage of users who are online constantly while playing games was acceptably high enough for them to make this design decision.
Again, this is all speculation, but it's not really hard to connect the dots to figure out why they decided to go in this direction.
I guess we'll see what happens when the game is released. :)
SSquared
10-01-2009, 03:15 PM
I thought it would be a massive hit, but now I'm not so sure.
I am certainly thinking twice about it now. I'm sure one of my daughter's would love this game, but if she can't play it in the car or while we are out, it may remain unplayed. Though, at home, she does sometimes play in the rooms that pick up Wi-Fi.
The thing is, I don't buy games based on what I think (or hope) the developers will provide in the future as it may or may not come. So I may pass this first round. I'm concerned there may be quite a bit of backlash and, unfortunately, this may hurt initial reviews on iTunes.
But...time will tell.
Hodapp
10-01-2009, 03:22 PM
Well, the thing is, the online portion of the game is by far way cooler than I was expecting it to be. I think iTunes reviews will be polarized in to two categories:
1. People who have iPhones or play their iPods in areas with WiFi that absolutely love the game.
2. People with iPods that bought it, don't easily have access to WiFi, and are miffed that they can't play the game.
I guess we'll just have to see which side wins out.
SSquared
10-01-2009, 03:24 PM
Hodapp, I had not read your message before mine was posted. That's actually very interesting. All I have is Maze Finger, though, and that does not seem to require me being on-line. I just turned off Wi-Fi and was still able to play.
But I think you are suggesting they might be taking note of whether people are on/off line while playing any of their games.
You are right, though. If they are getting statistics like that, then they should have a fairly good idea of how will this will go over.

First of all, Eliminate is adding a whole new level to the FPS series on the iPhone. It will have awesome weapons, tons of armor and upgrades, and cool skins too! Not to mention good graphics and online battles.
I'm pretty sure there were other Virtual Pet games BEFORE Nintendogs and pet society. Why dont you complain about nintendo copying a virtual pet game? TouchPets Dogs will have a lot of cool accessories for your puppy. It will also have play dates and push notifications too. Plus, something completely new will be the missions your dog can do.
And finally, Rolando is not a copy of Loco Roco at all! It has a lot of stuff that makes the game WAY different. Sure, you roll around and jump like in loco roco, is there anything else that makes rolando a loco roco copy? I dont think so.

First of all, Eliminate is adding a whole new level to the FPS series.

Also, this game is developed with Andrew Stern/Stumptown Game Machine, who developed Dogz back in 1995.

Oh, I forgot to ask. Is it possible to have multiple puppy accounts so my daughter and I (and whoever else in my family wants to play) can have our own dogs? And can those dogs interact together?
Whoops I lied. [Yes. Multiple people can play with one app. Your dogs are tied to your Plus+ account. All you have to do is login, and your account will sync with the app (downloading relevant puppies, stats, etc.)].'
The game will eventually support multiple accounts, but at launch Touch Pets will only support one Plus+ account. You can, however, adopt multiple dogs.

Interesting, I didn't know that! I remember playing the first Dogz game a long time ago, and it was really well done.
In what capacity is Andrew Stern working on this game?

So does this game save your data to Plus+, or does it store your data locally? And if it stores your data locally, what is to stop you from just signing out and signing in again into a different account? I know Plus+ now supports uploading saves in some games, but not others.

I know that MJ already said that you'l be able to adopt multiple dogs, but if you're asking if you can have your different dogs interact with each other, then I doubt it, since this feature has never been mentioned.
As for the buying extra content, I'm reasonably sure that Ngmoco isn't ready to reveal plans for that yet. It would make sense for them to sell extra stuff if the game is a success, but they're probably not going to commit to extra DLC this early.

You can adopt up to five dogs (but you'll have to "buy" additional dogs with in-game currency as they're a reward for being awesome). You can have two of your own dogs active at any one time--but they won't form relationships the same way dogs do who are invited over for playdates.

In slidetoplay's podcast they said that when they went hands on with touchpets they saw dlc similar to eliminate. You earn puppy points to get clothes, accessories, etc. But you only earn puppy points some times, though you can pay to earn puppy points whenever.
EDIT: Sorry I typed that rather quickly and it doesn't make a lot of sense re-reading it. It will be similar to Eliminates energy/credits system but with puppy points. At least thats what they said at Slidetoplay.

Interesting, so you can interact with two dogs at once, but it influences the dogs' behavior differently than online play does.

Seems like they're really pushing for this payment system to be a success. Here's hoping it works out in the public mind, and actually turns a profit after server costs.

After looking at the mini site on NgMoco.com, I can say from speculation, that this game is brilliantly made. Congratulations, NgMoco, you're about to take the iPhone many steps up the ladder as a gaming device.
Although, I don't see myself buying this. I believe that the dog I own gives me more fun than any dog in a game or in real life. I'll definitely be getting Eliminate though.

I agree with almost all of this, except in my case I strangely do want this game. But the lack of offline single player (correct me if thats not true but I remember reading it) is a definite nono for me. I used to have wifi all the time but my connection has been messed up for some time now and I can no longer get it at home (not on my iPod at least, my computer can get it) so having to have wifi would make me only be able to play this game a few times a week at best which isnt good time for a game like this. Hopefully we'll hear more about a hopeful offline mode soon.

No offline play. There is a single player mode, but you do have to be signed into the network in order to play it.
This feels sort of sloppy in my opinion, but the app still looks worth getting.

That is good, and I'm sure a lot of other people do as well. And iPhone users don't have to worry about it at all.
Still, for a single player game to require wifi seems like sloppy work. A lot of people aren't going to have ready access to the internet all the time, and to leave those potential customers out is a mistake, in my opinion.

Depends. I live in a smaller city with limited wi-fi options. The library. Borders. And a small block downtown. A few scattered coffee shops, too. In general, when I'm out, I don't expect to have internet access. I do have a wi-fi router at home, though, but even that does not cover the entire house.
