That's right! It's all up to Apple now :D
Check out our new game trailer

enjoy! :)
Hi guys, I’m game designer on Pocket Creatures - a new game for the iPhone/iPod Touch. iCreatures is a sandbox type of game where you play/fight/explore with your friend - the creature. I’m still working on the concept, but I would like to have community feedback as early in the process as possible. Please tell me what you think of the interaction and graphics examples below:
http://www.tactile.dk/Blog/Screens_01_Tugowar_small.jpg
Creature/Player conflict revolving around a slice of melon, the Woodpecker is the innocent bystander
http://www.tactile.dk/Blog/Screens_02_Fingerbite_small.jpg
The Creature resolves the conflict its own way - choosing to eat the unfortunate player instead
http://www.tactile.dk/Blog/Screens_03_Fury_small.jpg
Pushed too far, the Creature has an electrical hissy fit
Please comment! :)
UPDATE 2 (30/11 -09):
Hi there! We are throwing a crazy idea back and forth in the office, and we would like your feedback on it:
Imagine that you as the player, could affect the creature’s relations to game objects. You could make the creature hate bananas, love the woodpecker and fear the coconut.
The creature’s relation towards an object or critter is determined by association with the player’s actions while the creature is interacting with the object or critter. For example if the player slaps the creature while it is eating a melon, the creature will begin to fear melons. See the comic strip below:
http://tactile.dk/Blog/Melon01.PNG
The creature is eating a melon and all is good in the world
http://tactile.dk/Blog/Melon02.PNG
But alas, the evil player decides to slap the poor creature while it is enjoying its melon
http://tactile.dk/Blog/Melon03.PNG
From now on the creature will associate melon with the painful slap and try to avoid melons at all costs
What do you think? Tell us here or on our facebook page: http://bit.ly/quvZd
UPDATE:
Hi girls and guys, the silence is finally broken :) I would like to discuss with you some interaction concepts for iCreatures I'm currently working on:
All interaction in the game works via the iPhone/iPods touch screen interface. Player touch and finger movement is translated to in-game actions. The two basic controls are: Touch/Tap and Drag
The controls are context sensitive, meaning that the same finger movement can be translated into different actions depending on what in-game objects the player interacts with. For example will a back and forth “dragging” motion on the creature be translated into “petting”, but the same motion will be translated into “shaking” when the player has her finger on top of the tree. In the picture below are some examples of different player actions all executed by Touch and Dragging.

Please post your comments and let me hear your crazy ideas - I'll reply ASAP! :)

Oh wow,
I laughed when I saw the second picture. Had no clue what this was about until I saw that one. I really like this concept, something we're not seeing much of in the App Store and unique in it's own way. Loving the concept, something I would get for a few laughs :)
The creature looks violent. Pikachu-violent lol

We won’t launch with online play but it is definitely a part of the concept. We hope to make online play available through a later update :)
This looks awesome, just one idea: Please don't name it iCreatures, I'm sure we can all suggest you a better name that will make it stand out and brand it as something else more distinctively.

2nd that. Nothing makes a great game seem utterly lame like an "i" prefix.

I don't know why, but I'm rather intrigued. Those visuals look quite professional. The expressions and designs appear to be very well done. I think I'm going to have to keep an eye on this one.

Honestly we haven’t decided it yet. It is a feature we would very much like to have in the game, but we don’t know if it will be ready at launch or as a later update :)

Just get rid of the i and you have a good name already - Creatures
although, there was the massively popular creatures series back in the 90's you might get sued.

this does look neat, i like the graphics
it would be cool if we could maybe raise/train a creature and maybe buy different powers or whatever and have it fight with other people's creatures as in pokemon...or maybe when we're fighting, the player actually plays the creature and uses it's special powers and such

I doubt you could get away with using Creatures as a name as Mindscape already did something similar (http://creatures.wikia.com/wiki/Creatures_series) (though far more complex) over a decade ago using that name.

can we have a list of features?
Another poster said that the game looked like “Tamagochi” for adults – cute but deadly :) That is not far from the truth, but the game is also much more than that, with a lot of sandbox gameplay and other secret stuff :)
However right now the feature list is ten miles long :) - I want to trim it down so the game can be released within my lifetime :) So instead of listing features that might get changed, I would rather show them to you by video or pictures as they get implemented :)

Yes, the idea is to let the game evolve through updates containing new features :) Hopefully all the features on the "10 mile long" feature list will be implemented at some point in the future :)

Yeah I was wondering if I can beta test too. Mcdad, can we both beta test for you please?
The stuff you have put up looks really amazing. Could an RPG-esque aspect be possible - sort of GTA meets pokemon? You could have little missions that would start with teaching you how to interact with the creature, and them get them to interact with the world. The missions could be episodes? There is a lot of potential here, congratulations on what I think will be a sure winner.

I'd say as you have come up so far with your Ideas, Deliver what you have in your minds, its come out very well.
Once you have released the product, you can then think what else can be added to it Albeit you don't find anything from the 10 mile list tht you have :)

Lots of suggestions here, thanks guys :)
Right now the concept is a mix between a sandbox game and a more adult and humorous version of Tamagotchi, plus some secret stuff i cant tell you about yet. You will be able to alter the appearance of your creature (cannot say how though :))
The game will also receive free updates after release where new content and features will be added, so don't stop coming up with ideas :D
You will be able to name your creature, but as with the game itself we haven't found a name for the Creature in general - its species if you will.
So if you have any suggestion what the species of the creature is called please tell me :)

Hmm, the name must have an edge, but also be kind of cute too - however not so cute it says "I'm a teddy bear"
My suggestion is "blue devil monster - with a vengeance" but somehow the others keep rejecting it :)

Developer, pls do not use this idea as it will only make people feel that they are getting a complete package and I dont think anyone would buy stuff like that. Secondly, it will cause more for many different versions to be put up on the app store and it is seriously not wise to do it.

Nuu! I killed the thread D:
Sorry to double-post, but I wanted to say this:
1.) New name idea! Quiggles+Robalt=Quobalt :D
2.) I know this could NOT happen right away, and really possibly never will, but at some point, could you make a spore-similar creature creator in the game? I think that would basically get you 50x(literally) as many downloads as if there were no creature creator.

Quobalt eh? :) Have discussed it with the others, some feel that balt is too close to balls which is kind of unfortunate :) But keep coming up with ideas :D
I think that a character editor is a nice idea. However we want to let the player be able to change the look of the creature in a more organic way. In other words we want the character customization to be a integral part of the gameplay and in the interaction with the creature, not something that is done in a separate editor.
Just wait and see :)

thought i'd share a bit of a gimmicky idea:
what if the little critter could somehow interact with the music on your iphone?
maybe you could shove some headphones on him - the music playing could effect his mood?

IS there an option to flick the little guy, so he could bounce around the screen like crazy? Ala pinball.
Btw the game looks AMAZING! Ive been waiting for something like this. Please make this a fully alive animal. Not just a pre rendered path that he repeats again and again.
What are your plans for updates?
What is the price going to be?
And great job!
I Think its been mentioned but the ability for the creature to evolve, get sick and basiclly die off would be amazing.
I saw concept art on your page that would be great for the different ways the creature can grow up! And what would be amazing too, is depending on how our animal evolved its enviorment and the different animals living inside it morphed too. And when our animal dies off a small warphole sucks everything into the middle of the screen, it explodes and everything is put back to its original state, and our little critter is just a tiny tiny baby. And I MEAN baby not the purple guy we have now.
Obviously this would take part in a long time frame. We cant him dying so much! And it would be great if we get all the evolutions and OMEGA one would be available. Basiclly the emphasis would be obtain the multiple evolutions. And this could be presented as in world objects you can manipulate; you know like trophies or toys for our little pokecat creature.
What do you think of this idea Macdaddy?

i know it's only a little thing, but i would suggest you pay a lot of animation attention to the idle creature. to make it feel truly alive it needs to have more than a handful of basic idle animations, so we're able to get attached to the little fellow. i imagine this is something you've already discussed, just thought i'd put it out there.

My one piece of advice would be to keep options open. Not only YOUR options (as developers), but the options of the players. Lots of good ideas have been mentioned in this thread (I really like the aging one!), but if all of them are irrevocably implemented, I feel the game could turn some people away. One of the worst things to have happen to a game (in my opinion) is when some small thing that bothers or presents a difficulty to the player is permanently placed in the game. A game I think handles this challenge well is PG. I'm not here to love or hate Pocket God, I'm just using it to make a point. Everything they added was an option. If you want to, you can go back and play the game as it was when they originally brought it to the app store, V1.00. I don't think the menu for this capability needs to be as prominent, but a small icon to access various options (like 'turn aging off') would be really, really good for players who enjoy having control over their games. Nothing bothers me more than a game that is made unplayable for me because, although it's a great game, it has something that frustrates me and I can't turn it off. Giving players as much choice as possible can only be a good thing, and I think allowing players to tweak their games to their own personal preferences and benefits would be a great way to add accessibility and the ability to play they game the way the player wants to play it.
Just my opinion, but I believe it is shared. Thanks for reading,
Drkmaster

Hi, I have just updated the blog :) http://tactileent.blogspot.com
The post discusses the critters in the game and their abilities.
The idea behind critters is to let them serve as tools for the player and the creature. So far we have come up with two critters; the sleepy "Anteater" that works as a vacuum cleaner and the hyperactive "Woodpecker" that can be used to break stuff, sting the creature, and in general make a lot of noise.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NRGTI5SWSfo/Sh0cutavdrI/AAAAAAAAAAM/M_q9Jwg9hns/s320/Anteater.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NRGTI5SWSfo/Sh0cug7NiuI/AAAAAAAAAAU/PHozsf6NxQs/s320/Woodpecker.jpg
What kind of critters do you guys think we should add and what should they be doing?
Goose
09-16-2009, 06:46 AM
what a great idea! if you look at your anteater, see his stripes, you should be able to make him curl into a ball so you can play catch with your creature!
perhaps for the sake of irony you could have a kitten or a puppy, so your pet can have a pet!

Excellent idea. You should have an octopus. I have no idea what it would do, but the octopus is such a cool looking creature. Then you should have a turtle that you could use to hang stuff up. After all, turtles are nature's suction cups. As you can tell, I don't have any really good ideas.
Goose
09-16-2009, 06:36 PM
to be honest, i would suggest you have some creatures in the game that don't have a particular purpose, as well as ones that do, just to help build the world our creature lives in.
also a monkey, you can never have enough monkeys.
MacDaddy

All ideas are welcome :) The Octopus could be used as a Frisbee toy that will pick up anything it flies past? :D
To Goose; we will have tiny critters that will just be used to make the environment seem more alive - butterflies etc. However all critters with a certain size will be interactive. All critters, big or small will also walk around minding their own business, doing their stuff, when the players isn't interacting with them - not just lying around being static tools :)

You don't know how excited I am for this game. The art style and concept is amazing. I really like the idea of the creature morphing or changing it's apperance over time.
It would be interesting if you keep the creature in more sun light it's skin lightens and if kept in darker areas the creature becomes darker. If you feed the creature strange plants maybe there can be interesting outcomes.
I think it would be cute if the creature could keep one of those little critters you designed as a pet and bond with it, and then maybe one day out of the blue the creature will eat the little critter. Depending on if you feed the creature plans or other creatures could help determine what he or she looks like.
I feel like this is a huge project that you guys can keep expanding. I also like the idea if there are some side stories, like helping the creature discover it's origins and maybe find a hidden city of other creatures.
Or take the creature exploring to a jungle or beach and have it interact with the other wild life. Teaching the creature to fly, swim or climb trees could be cool as well.
Keep up the good work :]

Hi there!
I can see either the little critters being attracted to the creature, as in they follow him or her around and the creature is either welcoming or annoyed. I can see the little critter as a fun tool for the creature to play with, mess with and if you don't feed your creature enough he may just eat the critter out of survival needs.
Hope this helps, I will let you know if I have anymore ideas. I usually do. :]

I can see the little critter as a fun tool for the creature to play with, mess with and if you don't feed your creature enough he may just eat the critter out of survival needs.
Hope this helps, I will let you know if I have anymore ideas. I usually do. :]
Wow, it's like a "Tamagotchi within a Tamagotchi". I actually really like that idea. Maybe you could even take it a step further and every once in a while introduce a new creature that wants to be your creature's pet. If you elect to accept the new creature (which would be in place of your current one) then the current one gets jealous. Maybe you could even have pet wars!

You could add a black hole button that when pressed, everything, including the creature, gets sucked into the ground, and after a few seconds, the creature falls from the sky and then all of the items fall on his head in a comical matter(couldn't find better words than comical matter, lol). Also, has anyone suggested weather? Blizzards, thunderstorms, extreme heat, floods, tornados, hurricanes, tsunami, etc. would be cool. Thanks!

The pet having a pet is great. Perhaps the personality of the creature determines which critter it chooses as pet?
Regarding the black hole thing - we already have a feature in the game that is a bit similar - with stuff getting sucked up - but I'm not telling what it is yet :D

I think it would be awesome if you could add creatures that the main creature has to fend off. Example: Some sort of big feline creature, and depending on the mood of the main, depends on if he will survive or not. You might even want to add a means for the player to help him fight.
I know, it is similar to Pocket God and the T-Rex. But I love that aspect, and it could be done so much better.

another thought:
what if you could, via bluetooth/wi-fi network, flick your critter onto the screen of another iphone (much like the way 'Mover' works).
Your critter thing could then beat the crap out of the other phone's creature...maybe also steal their stuffs...or if it's in a boringly good mood just be friendly
and such

I wouldn't mind seeing rival creatures (npc) also come and invade your world, taking food and stuff that you could feed to your pet. I can see this being expanded so much it is crazy...some more ideas.. Being able to plant and grow crops to feed your creature, buildable structrures, like a tent for the creature to sleep in and keep warm or a jungle gym.
Also being able to grow flowers and then use the seeds to feed the little critter bird-like creatures. Having a garden, fishing, cutting down trees and being able to change the world would be crazy. :]
Edit: To expand on the customizing of the creature...You talked about being able to alter him throughout the game. I mentioned earlier powers such as flight, breathing underwater, digging underground, etc..would be very neat. I can also see some of these altering the main power of the creature..
At the moment he or she appears to be electricity based..maybe if the creature spends a lot of time underwater it develops water powers or if it is near a volcano or a heat source too long it's powers turn to fire. I would make these changes take a long period of time to occur...

I like the flower idea. to make it more interesting, though, your creature should randomly come across seeds to plant. Some of them could produce weird mutant like plants that eat your pet :)

So many cool ideas here! I think multi-player will be a "must have" update when we get around to making it :)
I also like how the environment could affect the creature. It's an idea we are discussing at the moment but your take on it is very inspiring :)
I could imagine updates containing new areas to visit where the creature will have critters to play with and new abilities to discover and experiment with.
How would you suggest the creature learns these abilities - just being near, say, the volcano - or will the player have to "train" it by throwing lava at it?
Keep it up :D

Rofl. Yeah, either by tossing in the creature or him accidentally falling in. Or perhaps maybe some kind of mini game. The idea of fighting other creatures sounds fun so maybe there is a fire god-like creature in the volcano that once beaten you acquire his power. Or there can be strange plants growing between the rocks and ashes that when enough have been ingested you begin to see some side effects. ie. puffing smoke at random times and lighting things on fire and then maybe it can be trained by casting the power on objects and the critters near by.
I love the idea of different worlds that can be released in future updates. The scene in the screenshots looks very pretty with bright green colors and flowers. I imagine visiting a hidden cave somewhere that leads to some ancient sculptures that possess mystical powers. At the end of the cave maybe it leads you to the side of a mountain with a great view.
I can see a beach scene with a hammock for the creature to sit on and a mini game of collecting wood from the nearby forest to build a camp fire. Swimming in the ocean (even if just the shallow area) and trying to catch fish would be fun.
I'm probably going overboard, I'm just very excited to get my hands on this game. Looking forward to beta testing it =P

This looks pretty awesome, and it sounds like it has a lot of potential. I really like the idea of the creature "adapting" it's abilities depending on the area that it's in. Customizing your own creature is a must for me, I love being able to have my own personal creature :). I would love to be able to battle other creature. I think the idea of having minigames and a pet for your monster would add for some good gameplay. I think it'd be pretty sweet to be able to have your monster's abilities be able to merge or improve depending on an area it''s in. For example, if your creature spends a lot of time in a sky area (just an idea of a place to improve abilities) and then it spends a lot of time in a water area, its power would be ice based. Good luck on this game and it sounds great!

this game looks very interesting..with some well though out updates..this could maybe be a hit..online play would definitelyyy be awesome, the ability to fight other creatures/or just interact with them. idk the premise of the game but if you could think of some cool achievements and make it OpenFeint enabled that would draw more ppl to it also

Hi guys!
Check this out:
http://www.tactile.dk/Blog/skitse03_sligshottail.png
As some of you probably have noticed, the creature’s tail is a bit strange. The hand of the end of the tail is essential to interacting with the creature. The creature uses the hand at the end of the tail to grab and hold items. The player can also drag the ”tail hand” and use it as a slingshot. The player lifts and drags an object and holds it over the creature’s tail hand. The creature will then grab the object. Now the player can throw use the tail to shoot specific targets – for example unsuspecting critters :)
Special achievements will be added for hitting various critters and items.
What do you think?

Hi there - long time no see - but we are still hard at work on the game :) !

11-30-2009, 02:41 PM
Yeah, we want the player to experience the creature having a life of its own - with likes and dislikes etc., and we want the player to be able to affect those preferences. It gives the creature personality - a personality the player can mess up in whatever way he or she likes it :D

I love the idea of being being able to make my creature paranoid of anything that around it, but I think it should be able to make a creature have a possibility to become enraged whenever it sees an object when you slap it with the object. Like if you hit it when it had the melon, it could either become scared of the melon or become angry whenever it sees it.
PointOfLight
11-30-2009, 04:19 PM
Maybe different actions could elicit different emotions. For example, slapping a creature while it eats a melon will make the creature fear the melon because it fears getting slapped. However, poking the creature while it eats the melon will cause the creature to hate the melon, because it is annoyed when it gets poked. Of course, I don't want to make this too complicated for you guys :)

This may be getting too complex, but what about taking something the creature likes and putting it on top of something it doesn't like. After a while it will start to associate the "bad" thing with the "good" thing and like the "bad" thing again.

what if you can get the creature into a really positive/receptive mood and then you can offer him something he feels is negative and if you do this 2 or 3 times, he will take the negative object and this will decrease the negative feelings...keep doing that and the negative then becomes positive...vice versa for making him dislike something he just liked...I guess this is like the "force feeding" from above, but I envision that he refuses initially and then takes the object after 2 or 3 additional offerings so you have to continue interacting with him instead of "forcing" the change in one event.
