Plug it into iTunes & hit restore, it's as simple as that. Unless your friend really meant to screw it up, then your screwed.

That's very odd, because there's no such thing as a recovery mode password. The only thing that iTunes might need a password for is if you're trying to restore from an encrypted backup. Make sure you're selecting to restore as new.

If that doesn't work, try DFU mode.

I think that happened to me. I just ran my jailbreak software and it was fixed. If you have a warrenty you might be able to get a new one free. If its in recovery mode they might not think its jailbroken. I had a freind who screwed up his jailbroken itouch and he got a new one free.

If you sync a device to a new computer, it will ask you to unlock the device. Fro this, we can take two things: that your friend put a password on your iPod, and that it's so messed up your computer can't recognize it properly.

What you need is DFU mode:
Charge your device first. Then follow these steps:

Hard Reset: hold down power and home button for exactly 10 seconds. Release.

If that doesn't work, try DFU mode: Plug your device into a computer and open iTunes. Turn your volume to max. Hold down power and home for ten seconds, release the sleep button, and hold down home until your computer beeps. If you see the Apple logo, you've done it too long. try again, and again, and again until iTunes recognizes it.

^ This, and don't forget to give your "friend" a nice little kick in his butt... ;)
