View Full Version : What would happen if I upgraded from jailbroken 3.1.2 to official 3.1.3 using iTunes?

Every time I open iTunes, I see a friendly reminder about upgrading to the 3.1.3 firmware. What would happen if I clicked that button? Would it nicely, and neatly, remove the jailbreak from my iPod, and upgrade my iPod to the 3.1.3 firmware? I hardly use any of the jailbreak apps and functions anymore, and I've been debating on whether or not I should just go back to normal mode.

I don't think it would be a neat removal. Any jailbreak apps not uninstalled beforehand would still be there, just unaccessible.
As annoying as it is a restore is the best way to make sure you have all possible space available

I tried this once on my iPhone 3G and the result was as I expected: several GB of data listed in "other" which wouldn't go away until I restored (later the same day, I might add).
Even the removal option in Cydia doesn't remove all the files used by an app.

It's also worth pointing out that people have reported having problems after updating from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3 without restoring, such as wifi connectivity and signal problems.

just restore and upgrade
I guess I'll just do this.
But I'm going to wait until I finish GTA and Chaos Rings. I'm not ready to start over on those games yet. Lol.
Thanks for the replies.

could you then just upgrade and then jailbreak again with spirit so them apps would become accessible again

I don't know. I pay for all my games, so they'll be accessible with or without jailbreak. I'm just worried about my saved games. I've put a lot of hours into GTA and Chaos Rings. I'm not ready to do a full restore yet.
so should we restore as a new iphone or restore it from a backup?

I have this question too. I realized that I had a lot of space marked "other" after I upgraded to 3.1.3. I think that the stuff from the jailbreak would be added back on if we restore from a backup. I know! I will jailbreak my iPod again, then delete all Cydia/Rock apps, sync with iTunes and then restore from backup! Oh... wait. That might add the jailbreak back on. Am I correct?

I have a similar dilema.
I've decided to update my jailbroken ipod from 3.0 to 3.1.3. I'm wondering if it's still necessary to restore before updating.
Thanks, in advance

From 3.0, definitely. Many people ran into a whole world of trouble last year when they tried to update to 3.1 without restoring. I'm actually surprised Apple didn't start forcing restores for updates after that mess.

I tried upgrading from 3.1.2 jailbroken to 3.1.3 official and it failed pretty hard, and it won't even restore...
