I've used IRC a ton of times for online strategy games where it's vital for people to be able to comunicate quickly, and barely any drama ensues.

And when drama DOES ensue, we just nuke the offending nation :D

I was on a few IRC channels for a while, the drama all depended on the strictness of the mods. With strict mods, the members that hung around for long enough inevitably followed suit with their maturity. Anyone that burst in acting like a fool was shot down and kicked out pretty quickly.
