It's finally here.
DESCRIPTION:
Zen Bound is a calm and meditative puzzle game about wrapping wooden sculptures with rope. A game in which a high score is not the goal - instead it is something to focus on and enjoy at your own relaxed pace.
It is a tactile experience: a game of wood, stone and rope with the most beautiful graphics yet seen on the iPhone. The visuals complement the controls to provide interaction that feels natural and comfortable.
A major element of the game is the unique, dusty and soothing down-tempo soundtrack designed and composed by 'Ghost Monkey'. It features binaural processing that creates an enveloping soundscape when headphones are used.
Zen Bound is different - an alternative and subtle gaming experience that is difficult to describe. But in its own small way, it defines what gaming on the iPhone can be.
FEATURES:
- The most beautiful graphics yet seen on the iPhone - 3D models that almost feel 'tangible' in your hand.
- Intuitive and natural multi-touch controls (tilt supported)
- 51 levels included (Tree of Reflection and Tree of Challenge).
- A captivating 22-minute downtempo soundtrack from 'Ghost Monkey'
- Game soundtrack 'Bound' available as a free download to all customers in uncompromising 320kbit MP3 quality
- Touch the 'Secret Exit' button in the main menu to download the free soundtrack.

I hate to do this, I really do, but first two semi-complaints:
The rope is a bit loose at times (although I will probably learn to compensate).
and
I wish the rope wouldn't automatically tie off on the nail when you're finished... sometimes I have more painting to do. Maybe a little button, or a tap to "hammer" the nail with the rope into the object?

I truelly hate Chillingo for CRAPPY translations.
I already re-transalted Vector Tanks for Peter Hirschbirg into GOOD German.
Same problem with Zen Bound... such a fantastic game gets destroyed by a BAD translation. Could cry.
First impressions - does not live up the hype. Nicely done, interesting and very high production value and polish. But let's not kid ourselves, wrapping wooden objects in string does not a fun game make. I'd rather kill Dracula, defend towers, race cars or figure out how to have a frog eat a fly.
It's a great job, but not much of a game or puzzle.

The game is beautiful fun. Translation.
"All your base are belong to us."
That's all I have to say about that. That's a classic line.
I just "played" one "level." It sounded fantastic. I really pay no attention to translation. After playing through Shenmue, nothing offends me.

A quick initial write-up/review for the uninitiated, based on first impressions:
Zen Bound is a sequel to the open-ware "game" Zen Bondage, released for Windows a few years ago. The goal is to cover a wooden object with rope; as you wrap the rope around the model, paint emanates from the rope, painting the object. Because wrapping the rope too hastily can cause an area of the object to be unreachable, there is an incentive for you to take your time and wrap carefully, covering every facet of the object (there is no time or rope limit). For each level, there are certain coverage goals. Unlocking a certain number of goals unlocks new models to explore.
The game controls intuitively, using multi-touch to help make accurate movements. If you make a mistake, it's all on you. Swiping rotates the object in the direction of the swipe, like the original. Tilt is also supported for the more adventurous.
The game is presented magnificently. The graphics are simply the best the iPhone/iPod Touch has seen, with details like shadows and color/paint schemes unique to the object. The menu screen consists of advancing up the trunk of a cherry tree; completing goals causes flowers to bloom and new levels to open. There are 51 levels in all, each unique and wonderfully rendered. The objects look like real wood, and the rope looks and behaves like real rope. The music should sound somewhat familiar to fans of the original; Ghost Monkey, a Finnish producer/DJ, provides some unique downtempo electronic music that nicely accompanies the aesthetic of the game.
Overall, this game is one of the most remarkable apps available on the App Store. It's pure fun, and it's a great app to show off to friends. The replay value of this is fantastic the physics and objects are just so unique and intricate that it is just plain fun to play. From a guy who has spent more money than he should have on his iPod Touch, trust me: this really is an indespensable app.
Verdict: worth the hype, and definitely, unequivocally worth the $5.

Who predicted there would be guys who did not play bondage but bought it anyways and didn't realize they didn't like these games?
It's a given. For 10 that like it, 1 will not.
No one should be disappointed with the purchase, though. The gameplay concept was presented black-on-white numerous times - in screenshots, videos, and game's description. You all should know what to expect and what you are paying for. It would really be pretty silly and disappointing if people who bought the game based on the hype alone, started posting negative reviews because the game did not apply to them.
It's not a game for everyone, that's for sure.

Alright. I can live with the rope; as I suspected, I just had to get used to the slipperiness.
I still wish there were some way to prevent the rope from prematurely tying off on the nail, though. I have to work my strategy to paint the part of the figure with the nail first.
But this is really an amazing game. I just passed "Cooperation" and have been loving it.
Killer app for sure.

Judging by the comments, it seems as if I should bypass all other apps, even Payback, for this?

Ditto; it'd be nice if it gave a confirmation to "end"...and possibly take a picture of your paint job when you're done. (it'd be fun to rotate the object once the rope is tied off, compose the picture, and optionally have it saved to your photo library)

Frand, I assume you'll read all these replies here when you wake up. Remember about 1-2 week(s) ago, we had a little discussion in the previous topic after I said I probably wouldn't be an early adopter of this game after the SPiN pricedrop? I started to change my mind in the last few days and the early reports from those who already purchased it, made me get it as well. I hope Zen Bound will bring you a lot of money so that you can continue to bring out original games. :)

I agree with the comments about the way the level is finished. Right now, when I earn 2 flowers and try to get 100% on a level, I have to do so while avoiding the nail because it will automatically end the level.
Maybe I'll get used to this and think of it as "There are two challenges in completing a level: getting 100% and avoiding the nail while doing so", but for now I have mixed thoughts about this.
It's the only thing I can come up with, though, everything else feels really good so far. :)

I have to agree about the nail as someone has said recently.
I've been trying for 100% and I either have to give that up and settle for less or I have to cover the area around the nail first and not go near it. Touching the nail - especially when it is out of sight and I'm lining up for a tricky patch - is a little frustrating. Not hugely so but some shapes do not seem to lend themselves to getting the nail first and it could limit strategy. But maybe that's just me.
Tapping the nail after touching would work for me.
BUT - fantastic game. This is what I have been waiting for and more. Many thanks for creating it.

So if someone decides to check out the game links - and people won't maybe see the zenbound.com link - they see a publisher site. This will sell nothing. It will impress no-one. No video link, no images, no wallpaper, no design. It's like you don't care about the game to promote it.
This cannot all be laid at the door of Apple's linking. You have complete control over where those links land.
Chillingo - can I suggest a site overhaul? It would make thing so much nicer for everyone :)

Just found a problem in the German version: In the menu, the two points are called "Baum des Reflektion" and "Baum des Aufgabe". It should actually be "Baum der Reflektion and "Baum der Aufgabe".
Not very problematic, but hard to look at^^.

You know... that actually is a good idea, maybe not a full fledged 3d editor, that would be hard to do, even if its possible the interface would be a nightmare. But maybe a simple lego style build your own group of blocks, which with the right group of basic shapes can still get you some pretty complex shapes....
even a school girl heh :p
Then all we need is a sort of an online server where you can upload user contents... and voila we can have the real NSFW zen bondage that passes the Appstore heh...
Or am I wrong? do they scan future user created online content?

I think it's because it's unique and in an app store that's becoming flooded with games that are very similar, such as all the different types of racing game, it's great to see a game with the level of polish that Zen Bound has. And when/if you play it, you'll see that the controls would never work as well on any other current platform. So it's great to see this level of originality on a platform that has, at times, seemed to be dominated by apps that offer little polish and give the impression that all the developer wants is to make a quick buck/59p.

I would call it "widdle/wrap" (mode): custom puzzles
fassion your own wood pieces and wrap them and share online.
I downloaded the game this morning, but won't have a chance to play until later this evening.

Is there any reward for completing a sculpture for 100%? So far I couldn't get 100% because every time I exceed the minimum passing percentage I accidentally touch the end nail, hence ending the game. Hopefully there will be a button that the player can press when he/she feels like completing it.

agree regarding hitting the nail. they should change it to wrap around the nail to finish.
We tried that at first, and the result was that everyone who picked up the game had no idea how to complete a level. It was simply not intuitive.
As a tip, try painting the area around the nail first, before hitting 70%, then painting the rest of the object.

Waaay to much money for that game.

first things first...WOW!
Frand, give a big congratulations to the rest of the team there at secret exit, this is an amazing game.
Graphics are absolutely top notch. I love all details on the branches and the nice out of focus backgrounds. The color pallet is spot on and the extra physics of the tags and lanterns as you move the phone are great to watch. This is also probably one of the coolest UI's I've seen and it complements the theme of the game.
As for gameplay, everything that was remotely frustrating about the PC version is fixed. The rope physics are much more realistic, the way to unwind rope is more predictable and works better than it ever did before and I find the touch and tilt controls much preferable to the mouse for string wrapping. Zen Bound just feels natural to interact with and its a lot of fun.
Oh, and seeing those flowers pop open after completing a level, best reward ever!
Now I just have to ask, open to guest submissions for new objects?

The flower achievements help greatly in making the amount of levels seem larger. If I'm working to get, let's say, 40 flowers, it means only ~14 completed levels. The "40" sounds like a lot so I think I'm close to 50, but then I realise that I need to keep levels and flowers seperated. :)

What do you mean you "think" you were high. You don't go from incredibly high to normal in a span of 10 minutes and not remember if you were just high ?

Wow, I'm so in love with this game, it's obscene. Just utterly fantastic, the execution is near flawless.* The control blows me away, it's so intuitive. The game much more involving when you don't have to fight the controls. The subtleties are fantasic, the way the rope follows the iPhone's tilt is superb. The music is awesome too.
*my only wish so far is that there was a way to confirm that you want to complete a level. A few times I have accidentally hit the nail to finish before I intended.
What do you mean you "think" you were high. You don't go from incredibly high to normal in a span of 10 minutes and not remember if you were just high ?
I was thinking exactly the same thing. I hate people who think its cool to do drugs as if there aren't millions of people who do, and they're like "oh dude, i was probably high."
Probably high? WTF?? Just proof they've never touched a drug in their life.

i love this game (i could go on and on about what makes it so great, but others have already done so)! However, there are 2 things that keep this game from being incredible, and 1 thing that would be a great improvement.
1. Accidental end - Over and over I accidently end a level prematurely, when I want to continue. If you have not already "painted" the area with the end nail, and hope for 100%, you are doomed.
2. Bugs - In many of the tree of challenge puzzles (i haven't noticed it in the animal tree yet) the rope does not "paint" as it should. There are parts where wood is left unpainted completely out of the blue. Don't have wifi, so can't show pics (need to email them):(
3. Slippery rope - sometimes, when you are trying to manouver the object, the rope does not cooperate as it slides when you want it to "stick". perhaps when it has already painted some wood, it would become somewhat "sticky".

I think the rope isn't suppossed to be sticky and it is part of the challenge and the nail is suppossed to be tricky so you play strategically.
And I haven't seen any bugs that you've described

i can see your point with the sticky part. it was overly sticky in zen bondage. it would definitely be easier with being sticky. i don't really want super sticky, so that you can go halfway across a flat side and turn. i just want it not to slip because of accidently manouvering the object just to look or whatever.
i also see your point about the nail, but sometimes it gets real annoying and non-zen when you keep having to redo your objects just because of that.

Bought this game while in the bathroom and didn't realize that I was cooing all over with statements to myself like "oh wow, that's some good shit." which give my missus the giggles.
But the game is brilliantly done and looks so gorgeous. Complete in audio visual and gaming zen. You really do feel like it's to be taken patiently, like the Heinz Ketchup ad, "best things come to those who wait".
I would also kindly request for signal if you accidentally finish the model by touching the final nail. Give an option to move onto next model or continue. I think that would offer a solution to what Frand said, about how newbies didn't know the level could end.
Oh and absolutely adore the tree as it's lit up on progression!!! Very cool!!!!

I'd like to also make the request. It does seem unnecessarily frustrating, you feel like turning the game off after you do it a couple times in a row. I could see if it deducted points somehow, but I don't think it should end your game.

That phenomenon happened in the original, too. I'm not at the iPod right now, but try wrapping more slowly; if I recall, sometimes wrapping too quickly causes the game's hit detection to be a little less accurate.

Unfortunately it is pretty battery heavy. Who cares though.

And that's why you got those games for "on the go" quick ones, like iDracula.;)

one more thing to improve: make it so that the rope (where your wrapping and the source of the rope) does NOT go off the screen. A couple times it has, and I have to guess blindly where to go, making it quite difficult

I don't agree with this....
I played ZB today with the headphones on for a good full continuous hour on my iPod Touch 2nd gen and the battery drain was minimal.
Then again, I didn't use safari or mail so they weren't open in the background and I turn off my wi-fi when i play games, so that helps the battery consumption. A searching wi-fi will drain that battery in no time if you are not using it and its searching for a connection.
I would have to say... for the graphics and sound... this game is very light on the battery life... at the heaviest its like most other games.
comparatively... it uses more than movie watching, more than Rogue Touch, but way less than PuzzleQuest, and much much less than Field Runners.
anyway... thats my 2 cents.

I just know this game was draining for me. I played for about an hour, and my battery became half filled. I just have to assume it's wrong since the battery icon isn't accurate (as I have been told)
On a side note: I'm waiting for a person to rate this game 1 star saying "stop all the fake reivews", so I can go "wtf, there's like 200 good reviews".

Within the first hour of playing, I thought the same thing. Some figures are long enough that a portion of them goes offscreen. The solution, obviously, is to use the two-finger spin to rotate the model. At first I didn't like it, but some of the models would be much harder to wrap up if they were "moved back," because it would be much harder to get the rope inside those tough crevasses.
I've tried about 25 times now, and I still can't get to the 99% threshold on Balance, the last figure on the ToR. Has anybody been able to get there?? I know it's possible, because I've gotten close and have always had a little spot here or there that has ruined my plans. It is really tough, though. And the ToC is absolutely fantastic!

But then they would have to change the way we can already roate the object by using two fingers.
EDIT:
Maybe the controls could be like this.
Two fingers to rotate the object.
Three fingers to zoom in and out. It would look something like this. Having your middle finger on the screen and just using your thumb and index finger to zoom in and out.

Multitouch also recognizes a two-finger touch, which means it would also be possible to use the index and middle fingers held together; swiping up would zoom out and swiping down would zoom in. Again, though: I grew out of the frustration over the off-screen rope. It's not really that annoying once you learn to use the two-finger rotation often.
In other news, I suppose there are some mild spoilers below, so if you like to see things on your own then try not to read the rest of the post.
I just beat the Tree of Reflection 100%! Nothing bloomed out of the top of the tree, but boy, was it worth the ride. Balance and Perseverance were the two toughest for me on that tree. The replay value on this game is superb; there are a lot of great objects that I'm going to have fun wrapping again. Now to try that dastardly Tree of Challenge.

Yes, but there will always be irrational people. I'm confident that when everything shakes out, the game will still have a monster rating. Plus, anybody who wanders over to Zen Bound's page on the App Store will see 40+ (at the moment) plaudits.

No, no, I completely understand and agree but it always boggles me - how can someone sit there and write such a review as if they were forced into blind purchasing the game. Only thing I have to add is that I'm glad I'm not a developer/publisher!

If someone doesn't like the game, then that's just their opinion but if the person says what someone already mentioned, proclaims the obvious, that's just plain stupid. If someone hits the buy button without reading the description, you have yourself to blame.

Definitely agree with both of these posts.
I would absolutely hate to be a developer on a game, having worked so hard on it, and to have it so summarily dismissed by a rogue individual with $5.
By the way, what are everybody's favorite objects thus far? I haven't spent enough time on the Tree of Challenge to get a feel for favorites yet, but I really like Reservation, Hurry, Vanity, and Cooperation on the Tree of Reservation.

Long thread so apologies if this has been mentioned. Being a completist sort of guy is there a way to see if I have done 100% of a level?
If we ignore avoiding the nail as one goal, I have 2
- 100% a level
- use the shortest rope
The rope measure I can see and the 3 dots mean I did well but don't show 100%. Am I missing something?

Long thread so apologies if this has been mentioned. Being a completist sort of guy is there a way to see if I have done 100% of a level? In Zen Bound, you can earn three flowers. One if you cover 70% of an object, the second if you cover 85%, and the last one if you cover - I believe - 99%. So 99% or 100%, yes it does have an unlockable achievement for that (the third flower).

02-26-2009, 03:36 AM
Thanks - so 99=100 .. hmm.. I'd still like to know I did actually get 100. I know it's only 1% but it's still incomplete at 99.
spmwinkel
02-26-2009, 03:43 AM
I just checked, and it's indeed awarding the third flower at 99%. So you'll have to verify for yourself that you get 100% before touching the nail after getting the third flower. That's what I'm trying to do as well. :)
By the way - you can get 100% with some small spots still unpainted. So even 100% isn't necessarily 100%.

I saw last night that some tiny spots could be left but it's what the code says :)
I really want to enjoy every moment of the game and I want to go for that 100%. So far I will not progress to the next level unless I have got that 100%. But should a level frustrate me I want to know which it is relatively easily when I go back to it.
I have a feeling that only flowers / rope are being recorded, not % which would explain it. It's not a dealbreaker and it's no less of a game simply because one person (me) likes 100% so I'll just have to be sure not to go up until 100% is hit.

I'm collecting some feedback here, and listing the current topics that have been mentioned:
Issues:
- German translation is poor quality (Fixed, in testing, will be in the next update)
- Dutch translation some issues as well (Fixed, in testing, will be in the next update)
- Paint not spreading evenly on some levels (Thinnest rope behaves like that by design, but we'll see about changing it.)
- Rope too sticky / not sticky enough (Won't change.)
- Touching the glowing nail by accident ends the level (Most feedback from this, but not trivial to change... we'll investigate but no promises.)
- On some levels, rope goes "off-screen" (We won't put in a zoom, we tried it and it caused more disorientation than helped. Remember the two-finger twist ;) )
Requests:
- Would be nice to rotate a finished object and not automatically end the level
- Would be nice if the completion percentage was listed
- Would be nice to have a gallery of sorts or something :)
- Would be nice to grab wallpaper images
- Would be nice to have more levels (Tree of Nostalgia, free extra 25 levels confirmed)
If there are any other requests or issues, please let me know. I think this thread is a good place to discuss this. But keep in mind, even if your request is listed here, it does not mean it will happen.

- Would be nice to rotate a finished object and not automatically end the levelI think that this is all we can ask for. It would be great if the Secret Exit team reconsiders this gameplay element, thinks about it, and can have an argumented statement of why they choose to go with the decision they take. (I'm not saying you should share all of that, as long as you feel confident with your decision)

I think this has more to do with the accidental touching of the nail than continuing the level, right? I mean, if you don't involuntarily end a level, then you're probably happy from your choice of finishing it.

Sure but I don't know. Sometimes I need to do something and I always feel pressured to finish my current wrap because I know if I exit I'd have to restart again.
Also, how does ZB currently handle call distractions while wrapping? Restart the level? Save current wrap %?

No, we save all progress. If you get a phone call, press the home button or you exit the level without finishing it, the game allows you to continue exactly where you left it.
In fact, we save all progress for all levels... you can have multiple unfinished levels if you wish, just exit the level and pick another one.

1. Congratulations on a great game! I find myself thinking about this quite a bit after putting down my ipod. I look at a lamp - ooh, that crevice will be hard to wrap through (okay, not quite that extreme). Also congats on being in the top 100 and number 30 something of the games - It definitely deserves it.
2. I have gotten over the non-stickeness part - I don't know what I was thinking, it seems perfect now!
3. About the bug - Its not just that the paint doesn't just spread evenly, there are entire strips of wood left upainted. Please see post 154 for the images. I had it again today - quite frustrating!
4. About the rope going off screen, I still think it would be nice for zoom. HOWEVER, I am used to using the rotate more, and I understand completely if you don't want to implement the zoom.
5. Again, AMAZING game!! It has quickly become one of my favorites for the iphone/ipod touch.

Kinda lazy so i don't know if this was said earlier, if it was, you can virtually smack me in the face
But could you include some sort of "display" option, where you can display the object you just wrapped? So you could put it as a background on your phone or something? Some look sloppy when finished, but some actually look quite nice, and it would be cool to have a display area where you can save and see your completed objects.
Excellent job on this once again, thisll stay on my phone for a long time.

It's practically the sum of all the various technologies that the iPhone/iPod touch has t offer, and presented in such a calming and impressive manner: visual, audio, touch control, accelerometer, about the only thing it doesn't take advantage of is the GPS and online accessibility, but it doesn't need it anyway (aside from downloading the soundtrack!)
Lovely game. Absolutely lovely.
This game might even make me venture into real bondage, haha! (just kidding!)
do you LOVE it?

Zen Bound is #13 in the Dutch store (Top Paid Apps list)!!!
Now I know that this doesn't even remotely compare to the amount of downloads that would get it to #13 in the US, but still... :)
it's up to #35 in the U.S. store top 100, which is really the one that matters.
I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised at its rapid rise on the charts. Frand, I wasn't sure it was going to get the mainstream adoption to do it. Especially for a $4.99 title. Looks like you priced it right.
I mean, it's gotten a lot of recognition from the build up over the months. And as a result, a lot of sites have picked up on it right away. Obviously you want a big push during the first couple of days to get to the top of the charts, and it's working.
Very very interested to see where this peaks out.
