View Full Version : Your favorite band(s)?

Ok, so we talk all day about iPhone games and what not, but what about music? What's your favorite band(s)?
Mine:
1) Scorpions
2) Linkin Park
3) Green Day
4) Tribal Ink
5) Skid Row
6) Depeche Mode
7) Journey
8) Sonata Arctica
9) Disturbed
10) REM
11) The Offspring
12) Europe
13) Nightwish
And some stuff by Men at Work, RJA, Senses Fail, Metallica, Muse, U2, Foo Fighters, and Motley Crue. I've amazingly only been listening to music for two years now, so I haven't really gotten to the hidden gems, yet.
Edit: Funny how fast tastes change. Yeah, I know this thread is dead, but if anyone every digs it back up, I don't wanna be seen as... this. I've dropped 80s music almost entirely. Ugh.
1) Scorpions (still)
2) Green Day
3) Billy Talent
4) Sum-41
5) Zebrahead
6) The White Stripes
7) Red Hot Chili Peppers
8) Radiohead
I listen to a lot more stuff. I went through the thread and picked out some bands and ran them through iTunes. Black Mountain, Them Crooked Vultures, The Parlor Mob, Rise Against, Rage Against the Machine, Incubus, Wolfmother, Unwritten Law, the Raconteurs, Radiohead, Say Anything, Soundgarden, etc. Linkin Park is out the door, along with a lot of the stuff I used to listen to. ... wow.

Call me emo, i dont care, I listen to emo but i dont cut myself. Thats such a big stereotype. 95% of ppl who listen to emo music DO NOT cut themselves. The only ppl that cut themselves are stupid 12-14 year old emos that think that cutting is "cool"

Franz is mainly one person. Really. I don't consider them a band.
But, it seems that you can continue to generalize the people on tech forums, as what you mainly expect, based on musical preferences. I would state as such, but I would probably get flamed or banned.

Switchfoot
When I was in high school I saw Switchfoot play in a tiny venue opening for a really crappy band. That was long before they were famous. The also played with Reliant-K that night, who was a local band at that time(they never got that famous, but they were up there).
That's not really relevant, I just thought I'd throw it out there.

Not really... they are a band.
Also, personally I am extremely into music, probably just as much as gaming and computers. In a sense, you can tell a lot about somebody based on what music they listen to.
Kind of off-topic, but are there any other NMH fans here? :D

Moody Blues
Evanescence
Fleet Foxes
IceHouse

But ... If I had to pick one band that I could take with me to a desert island and live with the rest of my life it would probably be Moody Blues (along with a few illegal narcotics)!

Well, I admit I don't much care for the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Sundown is ridiculously catchy and perfect for karaoke. I was mostly just surprised his best known songs were nowhere to be found on his 'best of' album. Gordon would not be my desert island selection anyway. I would want, maybe Lisa Gerrard or Spoons (don't make me choose.)

When I was in high school I saw Switchfoot play in a tiny venue opening for a really crappy band. That was long before they were famous. The also played with Reliant-K that night, who was a local band at that time(they never got that famous, but they were up there).
That's not really relevant, I just thought I'd throw it out there.
if you guys didnt know both switchfoot and reliant k started off as christian bands, i have a cousin who is a youth group leader and she has meat the people from switchfoot and so blah blah blah, enough of that boring stuff.....is anyone else exited for the new greenday cd thats coming out, i already have 9 leaked songs from theryre album and i gotta say AMAZING, i think im gonna go see them in concert when theyre tour starts...

I've actually been kinda disappointed by Green Day, lately. I listened to the premier of a three songs on KROQ last night, I only liked 21 Guns. I've also heard 21st Century Breakdown (had they cranked up the speed, it actually could've been a pretty good song), and of course, Know You're Enemy (actually really like that one). Nothing has come close to Holiday (my all time favorite song) at all. Seeing them this August, though!!!
Linkin Park's first two albums were amazing, but I kinda got tired of the Teen Pain and Frustration theme. I'm a teen, and it's tiring, but the energy and tunes the songs make up for it. The songs can actually be pretty deep, though. And the Chester and Shinoda duo works amazingly well.
Blink 182... blegh.
I'll always be an 80s rock fan first and foremost. I freakin' love the Scorpions :D

i like your taste lol.....but i do see were your coming from, it seems like greenday is settling down from they're young years of the punk alternative kids and starting to pace themselves a bit more, towning down they're songs and making them a bit less heavily(if you know what i mean by that) they're music has really changed over the past few albums thats for sure, i think it was quit risky changing they're style like that but i really like it, it shows a different side of them and it looks like they're putting a little more feeling into they're songs instead of just singing about some of the random stuff they used to....and holiday was a great song one of the best but im gonna have to say warning, and wake me up when September ends are right next to it...and im with you on the linkin park stuff two i liked the first couple a lot but it just started to sound like a bunch of complaining about how they hated stuff, then minutes to midnight came out and i think it changed from the complaining and that crap to kinda the original style, but just like greenday it was a bit towned down..and i also agree with the duo they definately have one of the best ive herd they put all they have out there when they sing and its amazing...hhhmmm music to my ears :D....i should hit you for insulting blink like that, theyre amazing and that ends it...wow this was a long post :D

ATB
B-Tribe
Moody Blues
Evanescence
Fleet Foxes
IceHouse

But ... If I had to pick one band that I could take with me to a desert island and live with the rest of my life it would probably be Moody Blues (along with a few illegal narcotics)!
Ok ... enough ... because I could go on and on (remember I'm 56 so I've had a lot of time to have a lot of favorite bands)
My uncle who is around your age introduced me to a lot of great bands. He listens to Porcupine Tree, Death Cab, The Shins, and a lot of other great stuff.

Being 56 does not mean living completely in the 70's. Sure ... I still love the music I grew up with but I also love contemporary musicians in addition to my list such as Pink, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Coldplay, Nirvana, and Third Eye Blind to name a few but .... I do know many people my age who aren't into new music. I guess it all depends on how you live your life.

Wow yeah told you that was bad... trust me when I say that is MOST recent and a lot of people arnt making the cut.
I get very bored easily with just one genre of music... though Progressive Metal and Melodic Death Metal is more my favourite cup of tea, I really listen to anything. The only genre of music that I am really not that into, is country. I like artists such as Hank Williams II and Johnny Cash and stuff, but I cant really get into the contemporary country.
Not to stray away from the topic, but someone on the first page had a list with some alternative bands on there and claimed them to be "EMO" and defended his "Emo" likings. First of all man, EMO IS NOT A GENRE OF MUSIC. Emo means emotional, and if thats what to apply the tag too, you can even call Aretha Franklin emo, and she is amazing. Everyone has emo in them, if not you are heartless, literally. No feeling = no soul. Im sorry but you can defend yourself all you want, the music you listen to should be because YOU like it. Im glad you dont let the "Genre" stop you from enjoying what you like, but don't call it "Emo". Call it alternative, some are hardcore, some Pop-Punk. Whatever you want to call it man, its just ****ing music.
Ok im done :) Carry on! Nice lists guys.

If you don't mind, i am going to play the Critic Card. I like the music, very f*cking rocking, and that's awesome you are doing a show with DBS.
If I had to complain, it would be the vocals. Few bands can get away with that style (for me), and though you have some background harmonies, they don't put enough emphasis on the punk sound of the music. That's why I like Bad Religion so much (not trying to compare you guys to any other bands) because they have that Lazier sytle of vocals, but with rich Harmonies. It's not in anyways bad, like I said, just playing the Critic card.
Now on the plus side, the music is punk-a-licious. Especially the nifty guitar solo on Thumper, which is my favourite of the 2 songs. I'm loving the chords, drums are decent and speedy, the bassist is awesome, and as bassist of punk-rock myself, I love to hear fellow bassists be heard :)
All in all, I am interested. I would like to get a copy of that CD. Not my favourite type of punk-rock, but I love all kinds of music (look at my post on the previous page....), and you guys do have a sound that I like. keep it up, and pre-grats on your new release bro. Hope you guys come to AZ sometime.

thanks for checking it out man. we're super stoked on the DBS show. we actually recorded the album with their original bass player who produces records full time now.
while we've never really had a straight ahead punk sound, I think you'll like the newer stuff more. I wrote most of this album myself, but my (relatively new) bass player and new guitar player are really into that traditional socal sound you're describing. I am too of course, being my main influence, but I like putting a twist to the formula when I can. I just added the new guitar player this week and I think he'll bring a lot to the band. great singer and player. the new stuff (and old stuff) is going to be that much more dynamic, and melodic. I've actually been getting more into thrash so it'll be interesting to see where we take the sound from here.
impressive list of bands by the way. I really believe that people who listen to all kinds of music play the best punk rock, or any kind of music for that matter. FYI my buddy's roommate plays guitar in All Shall Perish, Panic! are friends of mine from high school, and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul was in the mosh pit at my last show. haha that dude is awesome

thanks for checking it out man. we're super stoked on the DBS show. we actually recorded the album with their original bass player who produces records full time now.
That's pretty sweet! I didn't know he produced records full-time, but I knew he dabbled with it a lot years ago. Sick to hear he is helping out in the scene.
while we've never really had a straight ahead punk sound, I think you'll like the newer stuff more. I wrote most of this album myself, but my (relatively new) bass player and new guitar player are really into that traditional socal sound you're describing. That's awesome man. With my own music I write all my own sh!t too, but my Singer/Guitarist is more of the creative force behind our band Buktooth Slug (link here (http://www.myspace.com/buktoothslug)) And trust me, it's ok not to have a traditional punk sound. I leave that to the pioneers of the genre. If you check us out, you'll notice we do NOT have a normal punk sound either. We have a hard time even describing ourselves to people. A friend once told us we sounded like "Desert Surfer Metal Punk" which of course made no sense, but he was drunk :) The sh!t on our myspace are pretty early recordings/demos. Were still finishing up with Switchblade Records for our final copy of our Album.
It's usually fun as hell having new people to add to your music. Sometimes it can be really trying though lol. We had to replace our drummer once already since our other one moved to Oregon (then moved back ironically) and I am not even the original bassist, but we were all really good friends and the band wasn't supposed to be serious anyways. When the Bassist and drummer moved though, 2 of us took over the spots and it just kind of became a permanent thing lol. I have been in quite a few bands (nothing major) in my day, and sometimes we had shitty luck and good luck. I wish the best to you and your new band mates, and I hope to hear more awesome shit from you guys.

Thank you, I do take some kind of pride in the vast amount of music I listen to if not the money I have spent on my collections ;). I believe people that listen to a lot of different kinds of music have the potential to make all kinds of interesting music. I don't just make punk-rock, I make death metal, techno, rap, thrash. Anything that comes to my head if I am not doing any projects in particular. On the ipod touch, I have that music creation program "Beatmaker" and that thing is revolutionary. I havn't gotten to make my industrial type stuff yet, but if your into Techno or 'Trip-Hop' check out some songs of mine here. Booch138 (http://soundcloud.com/booch138)
I made all those on that beat maker program, with the exception of "Drag Me Away" which I added keyboards on through the M-Audio Sessions program on the PC. But thats it.
That is awesome that your buddy's room mate plays guitar in All Shall Perish. Those dudes can really play the f*cking guitar... ahhaaha. Is Panic! cool to hang out with? I have read some stuff on them and they seem like pretty laid back guys. And yeah Vinnie is a crazy mother f*cker. I met him and Dimebag after a Damage Plan show at the Marque Theater. Bob Marley, Deathklok, Pepper, Johnny Osbourne, The Beatles, Jimmy Hendrix, Janes Addiction, Jets to brazil, Beethoven, god I could really go on forever. I really can't stand the industrial commercial sound that most new rock has. It's really dumb. I always imagine some christian rock band in a warehouse with chains. I've got some synth gear I like to play around with. I'd eventually like to incorporate it into a progressive side project I'm doing, or even Battle Born. I'd love to get into some Refused stuff. I've currently got a MicroKorg, korg kaossilator, and mini kp. I tried strapping the mini kp to a guitar but can't get the right impedance out of my cables. oh well, I'll get it working someday.
the fruits of my labor showed up today. :D very exciting day for me.
